I've been reading the Oregonian since I moved to Oregon in 1978. It was a vital part of life in those years, but it is only a shadow of itself today. Paper delivery to the home, a hallmark feature of newspapers, has been cut back to 4 days a week with an electronic version offered as a substitute. The internet offering id substandard when compared to other sites. They could hire someone with skills to correct the continuing errors, but they do not. It's a newspaper. It covers Oregon news pretty well. That's it. I have been a subscriber for most of the last 60 years.

Worst paper. Delivery was horrible. After cancelling, I started getting calls from them nonstop.

New online improvements are a bust! They needed to send a manual! It took me 7 phone calls to get the paper to even open. Very frustrating.

I have tried to read the newspaper 3 times and each time I had to sign in but they wouldnt even accept my new password and on the 4th consecutive try I was able to read an article but changing the page put me back to the beginning and I had to sign in again. This is very frustrating. I would rather have the paper in my hand but it is too expensive. Another reason I should leave Portland and return to the Midwest even tho it's bitter cold there. read more

Oregonian is one bad paper for services and the paper delivery people throw the paper in the street in the ditch under the car instead of putting the paper in the paper box and getting help on the phone is treble. Every complaint you read in other reports we have here also. Now be careful there is a phone scam using the Oregonian papers name then asking for your bank account number and we have the bill to pay in a few days, so we aren't late on paying the bill. I stopped my elderly mother just in the nick of time or she would have given her bank account number to whoever was on the phone. The Oregonian claims that my elderly moms subscription has NOT been paid, even though she is paid thru the end of September. (I looked it up!!!). I would actually give them negative 5 stars if possible. Time to ditch them!!! They are starting to harass her daily!!! She does read them online, but at her age, she is used to a real newspaper. Mom has a long curved driveway, and she has mobility issues. They drop the paper at the top of the driveway, out of sight. Apparently it's an extra $15 per month to have them put it on her porch!!! So I bring it down to the middle of the driveway so she can still walk to get it per her request. read more

Delivery must be the hardest job in the world. Never received the Times on Sunday even tho' we were told it might be late. We stopped our subscription of the Oregonian because of horrible delivery and stupidly thought we'd be better off with the Times on Sundays. Nope. Even the 7-11 in our neighborhood says it's hit or miss getting the (any) papers delivered. read more

We are staying in Portland for two months and in early August arranged for a (4 times weekly) delivery. The first three weeks there was NEVER a time when we received all 4 deliveries. I called each time and was assured it would be taken care of. Finally we received all 4 newspapers the following week. However, the delivery problem worsened after that as we stopped receiving any papers at all. I spoke to two very nice women who assured me that my account would be flagged and moved to the supervisor and that we would get a new delivery person and that they would credit me for two weeks. Nothing changed. Still no deliveries. They are all talk and no action. Again, every person I spoke to was as nice and accommodating as they could be. They are just trying to do their job. Well they stopped delivering this "street pub" as it's called in their lingo a couple years ago, but as of 3 weeks ago our neighborhood is now littered with a new free street pub called Yes! (Your essential shopper) - basically just a bunch of ads. How about No! Come on. This is ridiculous. How disgusting can you be? Throwing garbage wrapped in plastic filled with one of our greatest natural resources destroyed for the pure motivation of money. You sell ads. You have to ensure people see them in order to sell them, so you throw them in driveways and no one asked for them. They go from driveway to garbage and recycling. No one needs the crap in these ads anyway, it's just mindless consumption, at the cost of our planet. PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS! read more

What a joke!!!!! All I wanted to do was get the newspaper for my 90 year old mother and have it delivered to her home. When I paid for it I had to put my address in for billing purposes, but put in my mothers address for the delivery. THEY KEPT DELIVERING IT TO MY HOUSE!!!!! It took my multiple phone calls to get anyone to understand the delivery address is different from the billing address. What a bunch of idiots! Also, my name is spelled wrong on the billing slips, which there shouldn't be any because I signed up for auto pay with my credit card. I keep getting renewal notices threatening to cancel this subscription if I don't make a payment. I can't change anything on-line because they 'system' can't connect my mom's home address to my billing address. read more

The Oregonian was at one point the most respectable news publication in the state of Oregon. Their hard hitting stories, community oriented slant, talented staff of writers were able to keep even the least dedicated reader engaged. While the current generation has shifted the demand to all things online, unfortunately the coverage has taken a turn for the worst. There is a lack of quality in much of the articles now; many of their star writers have left, presumably for greener pastures and possibly more stability. The stories have such an entertainment spin to them and there seems to be more ads than stories. I'm all for papers making money, but when most sections have been plagued with irrelevant stories and random ads, it becomes more of an eye sore than a good read. The Sunday edition is considerably less bulky (i.e. less paper - which should be good) but not for the right reasons. After hearing many subscription woes and other complaints from like minded others, it's no surprise they're going downward. For a paper that once (and probably still) commands the largest distribution in the metropolitan Portland area, it's sad to see this newspaper in its current state. read more

Call me old fashioned, but I still love the tactile feel and social experience of a morning newspaper. On Sundays, Gayle and I love to sit down with the New York Times, and when I'm back in Iowa, Dad and I will be there in the family room at 5:30 AM with our coffee and the Des Moines Register. And as a youth, I was also a paperboy for this Iowa newspaper and the Estherville Daily News. I'm also of the opinion that there are very few good newspapers left. My count includes the NY Times, Wall Street Journal, Toronto Globe and Mail, and of course the Anderson Valley Advertiser. So I'm in Portland Oregon on this fine rainy morning and in the Lobby is The Oregonian. I always read the morning newspaper, as I like to get a feel for what's going on locally and in the State. Gayle and I also read the Oregonian over breakfast at the Peerless, when we're in Ashland. The Sunday Oregonian was back on the Lobby rack within 15 minutes of me first picking it up. OK, maybe I would have been more excited about reading the paper this morning if Cal would have beaten the Ducks, but the Sports Section isn't my favourite section anyway. Most of what I read were stories that I read the day before in the NY Times, relatively dull local stories, and adverts not worth any sales tax savings. Maybe it's a slow news day. The bottom line is that with the overall decline of journalism, the Corporate takeover the business, the subsequent cost cutting, and the Internet, the local newspaper ain't what it used to be. And all that at an inflated cover price. I like reading my news online too, but because of who I am, I stick with this sinking ship, and in whatever town I happen to rest my head. After all (and to paraphrase Isaac Bashevis Singer), the distance between dying and dead is a very long time. read more

I like daily newspapers. But I like hard hitting, investigative journalism - you know, the stuff that keeps a democratic society informed. The Oregonian has become less about that, and more about missing persons and fluff pieces about dog parks. It's become a billboard for advertisers, so I don't subscribe anymore. So you'd think I'd be done - right? Wrong. As It turns out, the Oregonian has a special punitive prize for non-subscribers. Every week they deliver "This Week; featuring the best of Food Day". I don't want it, so I call and tell them so. They said I'm wrong; I do want it because of all the coupons. I removed the newspaper receptacle from my mailbox, and the next week it was laying in my driveway like a wet turd. I continue to call them and they continue listen, and the following week, there it is laying in the drive. They actually log the calls into a database and can tell me exactly how many times they have ignored my requests. The Oregonian gets paid by the advertisers, and the price they pay is a function of distribution. If they responded to people who don't want the coupons, then their distribution would shrink and they couldn't charge advertisers as much. So let me take this opportunity to tell the Oregonian, and all the coupon advertisers that it goes from my driveway straight into the recycling - coupons and all. read more

"Welcome to Oregon, we're DYING to assist you." My B-I-L's submission for state slogan was runner-up in an Edge contest years ago, and I think it still holds up. If you asked me when I was a teenager what I would do for a career, I would have told you I wanted to be a reporter. You see I'm fascinated by people, places and things and (still) want to learn about everything. However, what I learned after working on my school newspapers for a number of years was that I don't have an essential journalistic quality - the ability to ask pointed personal questions. At my high school we had several seriously bad things go down and I just couldn't go to friends and family members of a victim at one of the worst moments in their life and ask, "So what do you think about all this?" But even though I didn't pursue that dream, I have a great admiration for journalists and newspapers. Real newspapers. Those you can touch, feel and smell. But with most of America getting their news from the web or Jon Stewart these days, who knows if we'll have 'papers' in another 5 or 10 years. It may be one of those things I'll explain to the grandkids one day, "Well, back when I was a kid, news was printed on PAPER just once a day." So, I'm going to show The Oregonian a little love. Is there a zero rating? Because if so, that's what I'd give this publication. It's customer service is not just poor, it's non-existent. Last fall I signed up for an 8-week trial subscription. When that expired, so did delivery -- for a couple of weeks. Then it restarted along with bills! Multiple calls to customer service, each with a promise to resolve this issue, have failed to stop this paper. If you're considering a subscription, don't do it. The home delivery is horrible. I had to call (again) to not receiving my newspaper. I quit counting after 10 missed deliveries since I resumed my service in March. I called to cancel my service this morning, they offered me 2 free weeks.....im not going to hold my breath that they'll get their shit together. After 21 years of great service the Oregonian has gone down the tubes. For over two decades my paper was delivered to my front door --- about a 30 second drive off the main road as I'm on acreage. Driver got a nice trip and I got the Oregonian. Now the Oregonian is delivered on the main road and I am lucky if I get it half the times as people come along and help themselves. I have spoken to Customer Service at least a dozen times. They are polite and file a report that does no good. Been told I will get credit for missed papers which is also a joke - not one cent in credit. VERY DISAPPOINTED in what used to be great. read more

We love getting our newspaper in the morning very much. So much we pay +$85 to have it delivered 7 days a week. But Ty Bryant seems to think he can take your check, cash it and then not bother to deliver it. We have had no off day newspapers delivered for a month now. We have left messages with his answering machine 9 times. We have called the Oregonian to complain and we have emailed them, with a copy of our cashed check. I ordered the Sunday paper a month ago. Called every week to confirm no paper has been delivered. The customer service department credits me every week. The Lake Oswego call center has a message on the recording that the messages are full and can't take messages. What a scam!!!! read more

OK, I enjoyed the paper for 25 years, but I'm done. Why can't you cancel online? Surely the technology isn't too difficult? Everyone else has figured it out. Instead, you must call their phone number. OK, call #1 had me on hold for 20 minutes, listening to the The Entertainer by Scott Joplin. Not very entertaining. OK, call #2 was a repeat. Does anyone answer the phone? OK, call #3 was picked up after 10 minutes. Only a total of 50 minutes on hold! Great! This nice lady made every offer to keep me as a subscriber. No thanks. Leave me alone. Stop sending the paper. She finally agreed. But, the paper keeps coming. Even worse, their invoice showed up. Even worse, we got a nasty phone call telling us that we're past due. I remember a time, not that long ago really. it was a nice time, a time when the Oregonian didn't suck. Remember they actually did investigative reporting? They even won a Pulitzer for it. They advertised "if it maters to Oregonians its in the Oregonian." I mean it wasn't true, but they advertised that and people didn't instantly laugh. Even when they burried the Packwood story... Ok that was then, now you have the exiting option of paying for a bunch of advertising and content you already got from your computer. No not from OregonLive their website, from good ones. Newspapers everywhere are in trouble. They are cutting back the one thing they do which we need. Investigate, and inform us. So now wherer to find out whats going on around here? Probably the Portland Tribune. For my rating Im giving it two stars, I've seen better...in this case it includes the Oregonian a few years ago. I used to read the Oregonian. It's our daily paper, after all, so unless I want to get weekly news from the Trib's more in-depth reporting, a Village Voice perspective from the Willy Week, or some snarky mess from The Merc, this was it. The end-all be-all. The big O has gone way downhill. They've canned some of their best journalists and as a result, their coverage is now, well... canned. It's gone from a journalistic publication to flat-out advertainment, with a smattering of news in there somewhere. Just recently, the Oregonian showed us her true O-face as she dropped a big stinky turd on our collective, food-loving chests. Dubbed the Non-Foodie's Food Guide, this ode to chain restaurants was a thinly veiled 'Us vs. Them' fatwah against so-called foodies (or, as they describe them, "gourmands, connoisseurs, picky eaters, or just plain old snobs.") It pits the regular down-home folks against 'the rest of us' in a Karl-rovian anti-elitist tome that includes such statements as "You might be a foodie if... You hate American cheese. And, honestly, America." Didn't they read our Brunchbox reviews? Oh Oregonian. You silly dog you. Did you just hire some writers from The Mercury? Now obviously this is not a serious statement... it's meant to be in jest. It's one of those Foxworthyisms that's funny when it's a joke made by a type of person to that same type of person, so all those types can collectively laugh at their own idiosyncracies. But when paired with a sister article that does a terrible job of hiding its underlying ire and loathing for those same folks ("foodies" - the ones that care about, and support, the local independent restaurants in Portland), it comes off more like a Limbaugh moment. Is this an April Fool's joke? Nope. It's October. Am I offended? Hell no. I make no qualms about loving good food. I thank any deities that will listen for every delicious meal I eat thanks to Yelp, Portland Food Dude, the Willamette Week Dining Guide, Portland Monthly, and every other thoughtful local food review I read. Do I want to read a story in the major daily paper's purported 'food guide' written by someone who takes pride in the fact that he doesn't care for, or have an appreciation for, good food ("I'm not a foodie.")? Hell no. It would be the same as reading a technology piece written by someone who's still using Netscape, or a Car and Driver review penned by the driver of a Yugo. Why am I focused so much on this one piece? The Oregonian was the paper I would turn to when I wanted actual objective journalistic news (for what it's worth, it's all we had). I'd turn to (and respect) the food section when it contained reviews of restaurants serving good food, trying new things, offering new cuisines, or somehow otherwise elevating culinary culture in Portland. Now that's all gone. These are the rocks upon which the last vestiges of respective journalism has been dashed. It's the sign of things to come. The end is neigh. I remain hopeful that we'll still see good things to come from the O, but from what I've seen lately, I'm terribly disappointed. Plus one star for Family Circus. read more

My issue isn't with the paper itself, it's with their incompetent customer service apparatus. It's now run by some company called The Pisa Group which is apparently located deep in the bowels of corporate hell (their site says they're in St. Louis, don't believe it). Late September I get a call about our subscription. It's time to pay up. No problem. I give the woman card information over the phone and consider myself paid up until the end of October. But wait, I get a call at the beginning of October telling me my subscription is going to end because I haven't paid. Say what? I check the bank, and sure enough, a charge has gone through and been credited to the Oregonian Circulation Department. So just give them a call and get things straightened out, right? Not so much. The people at subscriber services have no power to research account issues. If it's not in their 'system', there's not much they can do. Not even supervisors can help. All they can do is take notes and then email some other group the details about any billing complaint (or lost payments). They promise someone is going to call you back, but they can't give you a phone number to call, or any way to get in touch with the people who are apparently going to solve your problem. Sure you get false glimmers of hope when someone calls to get the first and last four of your card for research (twice now in my case). Maybe you're nearing the end of the fiasco, but then... silence until they call to get the last 4 of your card again. You know, for research. Your only recourse is to call the low level people and see if you can get a status update, but you can't because they can't talk to anyone who could actually help. But they'd be happy to email them again. For me, this has been playing out since the 10th of October, and trust me, if I can ever get this resolved, the subscription is going to stay cancelled. read more

I've tried to contact their numbers listed... the local number automatically gives me a busy signal; the 1-800 number informs me that 'all customer service representatives are busy, please hold' with a wait time in excess of 20 minutes..... All I'm trying to do is ask a billing question as the Oregonian is not transparent in how they bill their customers. Then they wonder why their subscriptions and readership numbers are declining..... If there was a lower rating I would have put it like -5 stars. My husband and I used to like the Sunday paper for the adds. Well he subscriped for a weekend deal and it seem like the person who delivered it always threw it in a bush or in a puddle. He canceled it. Then we went to Fred Meyers and a man in front was selling subscriptions for cheap, he said it would only be for 3 months and that would be it. Well that was a lie it continued and I canceled it, because we never read it plus I didn't want to get charged again. That was in Sept. 2013 and then after they sent us a letter saying that we will get the paper for 4 weeks for free. Well needless to say they charged us and turned us into a collection agency in Jan. 2014. I wil NEVER order this newspaper again. And I totally agree with Jesse S. the Oregonian IS going down the toilet. read more

Recently they started delivering a free 52 week trial of wet and soggy papers on my driveway. Called the number to unsubscribe, waited on hold for 40 mins, and was basically told I wasn't in the system and he would transfer me to a supervisor. Of course instead of being transferred, he hung up. Called back, waited another 30-40 mins on hold, told the new rep I wanted to stop all deliveries of the "free trial" including This Week newspaper stopped. He told me they are not associated with This Week and that I would have to call that number to cancel that. Strange thing is, on This Week paper, it's the same number as the Oregonian. So that's another 30-40 minute wait on hold I guess. I always thought the Oregonian was a reputable company, but ever since the internet has nearly killed their subscription base, they have come to tricks like this to lure in subscribers? The second time I called after being hung up on, the rep said that deliveries of the free trial "should" stop. So I guess we'll see. It's been very time consuming and frustrating dealing with them for something I didn't order or want. The representatives are rude, not helpful at all, and apparently lie to your face. On a side note, I did find The Oregonian useful one time where I used it to line my garage floor for a spray painting project. Other than that, I get the news off the internet like everyone else. read more

My experience with the delivery of the newspaper to my house could provide ideas for a PORTLANDIA episode. Again this morning my newspaper is soaking wet. Yes it was wrapped in plastic but only sealed on one end. They must train their carriers to keep one end open. This causes rain runoff to collect in the bag. Is this to help keep it from going into rivers to protect the Salmon? This must be such a common problem that there is now an OPTION on the automated phone reporting system to report A WET NEWSPAPER. It's not like its a suprise that it rains here. Double bag the paper so you dont have re deliver them. Perhaps a list of useful things to do with a water logged sunday paper could be created and shared. read more

I feel bad writing such a negative review since I know the Oregonian is struggling with subscription base, however, I have signed up for the Oregonian now 3 times and never received a single paper. It's as if they are not interested in my business. When I called for a refund, they only were willing to offer a $3 credit towards my account with them. I asked to speak with a manager and they explained they could only email managers with my situation. Then promptly tried to end the call. I asked if a manager could please call to confirm they received my info and the rep hung up on me. This is so frustrating! So honestly, I would highly recommend that if you are interested in the Oregonian, try the online version and know that their customer service is terrible to deal with. read more

Horrible customer service. I canceled some time ago because they wouldn't stop putting my newspaper in a puddle of water. I decided to give it another chance because of a good deal and had a salesman's assurance that the "the whole system had been revamped." My subscription was supposed to start last week so I called customer service; they were more interested in making sure they got my money than making sure I was getting the paper. They did give me the number to the distributor and assured me it was a direct line and someone would pick up the phone. I have left two messages over the last 3 days and have received no response. The Oregonian is a mixed bag- but a lot of it is filler. While the San Francisco Chronicle has recipes, they don't seem to have an online recipe database like the Oregonian. The Oregonian's recipe box is a go-to place, they have classics like a deli favorite from the 90s- http://recipes.oregonlive.com/recipes/spicy-cold-soba-noodles For the National Parks centennial, they had this interesting article- http://www.oregonlive.com/travel/index.ssf/2016/07/3_national_parks_in_oregon_tha.html Neighboring Washington has 3 Parks to Oregon's 1&Idaho's 0. This article discusses the complex history of National Parks in Oregon- and it's as much about land use disputes like the Burns standoff and the conflict with "Rancho Rajneesh" in Antelope. The Oregonian covered the maltreatment of the Oregonian Sanders delegates at the DNC, unlike most major media outlets, so there's that. It's an OK publication, but the online recipe box is a treasure trove. read more

This is the worst newspaper I've ever encountered. The Oregonian thinks things like a deer in a downtown parks district are Front. Page. News. This is the most irrelevant and self-important newspaper I've ever read. The Oregonian endorses the most conservative political candidates they can find, which is odd given their market. Their readership is in a constant decline, and most Portlanders will tell you to read the Tribune instead. Now, you can pick up this paper and read the AP articles that they've decided are newsworthy, and get a few tidbits about the world, but that informed feeling you get from reading the news just never comes. Perhaps worst of all is that the O hires half-literate monkeys as writing staff. You know that old claim that if you set a bunch of monkeys at some typewriters and gave them a million years, one of them would tap out some Shakespeare? Not this group. read more

BOOOOOOOOOO! This place sucks. What a joke. We used to subscribe but quit our subscription because the coverage was lousy and and the price kept increasing. Most days the paper just goes straight to the recycling bin. The only thing worth reading was the comics, but now I realize the biggest joke is the Oregonian its self! We re-signed up recently. BIG MISTAKE! I thought it would be nice for my lady to have the Sunday paper. ...and it would have been. Only the paper doesn't come. In three weeks of Sunday/Tuesday subscription we have only received 1(one) paper. They advertise this super awesome rate and then compensate for it by not delivering. Lie, cheat, hack, steal. Screw these people. They moan about how poor business is doing and then treat their customers like this. I am calling early next week to cancel, yet again. I promise, this time will be the last. 0% for effort. Grade is F- as a company. Boo on you. :( read more

Sorry Oregonian...your customer service has gone downhill. We only pay to have the paper delivered twice a week (Sunday and Tuesday).After not receiving our Sunday paper, I called the customer service line (after finally getting through - it took multiple tries, as it is busy most of the time) and waited on hold 15minutes before connecting with a live person. I explained I wanted to have my paper delivered and the customer service agent assured me it would be on its way. Well, 24 hours later it had not arrived ( I really just wanted the Sunday coupons, dammit) so I called again, was on hold ANOTHER 15 minutes (after multiple tries, because, as usual, the line was busy) and the customer service rep told me I should have called before 10 AM, as there was nothing she could do to help me except give me a credit on my bill. Frustrated, I told her I had called the day before...that was WAAAAY before 10 AM today. She basically didn't care and I got the brush off. If it weren't for the Sunday coupons, I would cancel my subscription entirely. their customer service is a joke. Good luck getting through their perpetually busy phone line....and if you do, be prepared for apathetic help after a lengthy (15 plus minute) wait time on hold. read more

Home delivery leaves much to be desired. If the carrier doesn't feel like coming, then you don't get your paper. And, if you don't call, you're just out of luck. We live in a rural area that sometimes gets snow, and if there's just the least bit of snow, no paper. This is very frustrating, because we only get the Wednesday/Sunday paper, so like yesterday, we failed to get our New Year's Day paper. It's not like this area is a mystery...the carrier should have known what they were getting into when they took this route. If you can't drive in the snow, don't take the route! I mean, even the garbage trucks manage to get up here every week no matter what! The best part is, when you call to report the missing paper, they gladly offer you a credit instead of getting you the paper! 12/1/2016 I just tried to update this but I think it failed. So here's another try. I jumped through all the hoops trying to call again after receiving another past due bill. I finally spoke to a fellow named Craig who couldn't help but transferred me to a supervisor named Sabrina who said you she would expedite my case and I would receive a phone call to take care of this matter. Then another lady who said she was the supervisor called and I went through the whole thing again with her with the same results. Okay, I've given it a chance to get used to the reduction from daily delivery and the new smaller format printing layout, and the reduced content, but I very reluctantly have decided to stop my subscription to The Oregonian. Up until now I've been a subscriber for my entire adult life, I even got the Sunday paper when I was in the service stationed overseas, it's been a regular part of my life... but no more. It is very much like a weekly paper and not a daily. For a similar amount of money I can subscribe to the electronic version of The New York Times or other equivalent paper and get a whole lot more content for the same money. This is a sad day for me... I used to love this paper and looked forward to opening the front door to see what is going on. The printed paper is sad and the electronic version is really poorly executed. I'll keep watch. if the paper improves, I'll subscribe again, but not until then. read more

I usually read my news online, but I'm a coupon queen, so I need the Sunday paper for the coupons. I got a crazy good deal on Sunday/Tuesday subscription through a local coupon blog, and I get two papers delivered on these days. My subscription started on time, they always give me both of my papers, never forget about me just because I'm a two-day-per-week customer, and my subscription continued without interruption when I moved across town. And when it rains, they double-bag the papers from each end, so they don't get wet. This makes me gloriously happy. read more
