We had seen the "Butcher" and "open"sign and thought, let's give it a go (especially being that it was 6:50 on Christmas Eve and we had nothing planned for dinner the next night!) We were warmly greeted by the owner, who directed us to the seafood choices, which I had inquired about. However, upon seeing all of the special middle-eastern items they had (in addition to a wide selection of typical butcher-shop items at very decent rates), we decided to go that direction. The owner was friendly and outgoing and helped us put together a collection of items for our special dinner including, chicken shwarma, kabobs, Iranian bread, some feta (which he shared with me how to fry up!), some pickles, and baklava for dessert. We loved our experience and can't wait to cook up all this amazing food for our special holiday dinner! If you live nearby--go in and give them a try--support you local butcher, get great meat at a really good price. And, maybe, even try something new!!

I get exactly as requested, such as asking for avocados to not be too ripe. I also like that the delivery people are employed by Save On Foods. At least one retailer uses private contractors. I feel the drivers should be employed, and that food should be delivered in refrigerated trucks for food safety. I highly recommend their service.

The location is quiet and peaceful. Grocery offerings are a little boutique-y but they have fresh produce, whole bean coffee, a small selection of bulk bins, pasta, etc. We went out of our way to go back a second time during our visit.

OK, let's get the weird things out of the way first. Everybody knows salads are boring, right. Well…read morenot always. Best salad I've had, maybe better than at home. Second, on Salt Spring everywhere is a zoo Saturdays. Wrong again! Mondays and Fridays are the busiest for this place because only the locals know of it and locals avoid down town Ganges on weekends. How it works. You choose from a list of ingredients, (see the choice on the side of the truck). They quickly pull it together (no cooking, go figure). Great fresh ingredients and generous portions all at $9 no matter what you order. They provide compostable container and cutlery. They are located adjacent to Mahon Hall. Turns out that GISS stands for Gulf Islands Senior Secondary. This is organic food grown and served by local High School Students! I had the most amazing combination of tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, feta, pesto pasta, and a few other things. Looks like this will be a regular on my visits to Salt Spring.
