2 Stars -- Great Food, Terrible Overall Service The Original Pancake House in Woodmere has great food, but unfortunately, the overall service during our visit was terrible. We waited about 30 minutes to be seated, which wasn't a problem. We were enjoying time with family and looking forward to a good meal. The problem started AFTER we were seated. The hostess took our drink order but told us she only takes drink orders. Then we waited another 30 minutes without anyone greeting us or taking our food order. At one point, another waitress actually said, "I see you looking at me, but I'm not taking your order." Wow. Eventually, a very nice waitress came over and took care of us. She was great! Our food came out fairly quickly, everything was hot and delicious, and the price was reasonable at around $20 per person. Meanwhile, three hostesses were standing at the front singing and harmonizing with no customers instead of helping the clearly overwhelmed waitstaff. It felt like they were preparing to be discovered on American Idol while we were waiting just to place an order. There was no manager around to address the situation, and at one point, the restaurant even started getting smoky. The food was good and our eventual waitress was wonderful, but waiting nearly an hour from arrival just to place a food order is unacceptable. Great food. Great waitress once we got one. I've been here a few times and each time I have a different experience. Today was another great one. I tried the green chili pepper omelette, and it was awesome. The green chili sauce is chefs kiss. It really takes your food up a notch. I highly suggest you get a little extra on the side if you're greedy like me.I got mine with a side of pancakes instead of toast. The pancakes were very standard. Nothing spectacular that I would expect from a place that specializes in pancakes. I did get a side of apples with the apple syrup which brought them to life. My husband ordered the Mexican burrito, he thoroughly enjoyed. Our server was super sweet. I wish I got her name. If you haven't tried the location in Woodmere, I strongly suggest you give them a go. Two things to know about this place: 1) If you are meeting people there for a meal, you won't get seated until everyone in your party is there and 2) be prepared to have someone come to your table to ask you to leave after you pay your bill because they need your table...even though there might be a LOT of open tables elsewhere in the restaurant. (This rule is apparently stated somewhere on the menu.) My wife and I were meeting our daughter for breakfast at 8:30 AM on a Saturday and she was running a few minutes late. There were a lot of empty tables, so we figured we could sit and enjoy some coffee until she arrived. The hostess informed us they do not seat 'incomplete parties', so at 8:35, when our girl arrived, we were seated immediately. To us, it was an odd rule, but not completely unreasonable. We shrugged it off. Our service and the food was very good overall. Once we were seated, our server came to the table with menus and water. While we were waiting for coffee, another younger woman came to our table to make sure someone had taken care of us. That was great and our server turned out to be very attentive and efficient. We were enjoying a really great breakfast visit with our daughter. Food was tasty and portions were plentiful. The conversation was happy and the overall experience to that point was very positive. Around 9:45 our server came to the table to give us the bill and I was able to pay it at the table-so convenient! A few minutes later, we were wrapping up our stay while trying to finish our coffee and conversation, when a man came to our table a and told us, "You're going to have to leave. We need your table." He was blunt and unpleasant, and never identified himself. We were dumbfounded. None of us had EVER been asked to leave a restaurant for ANY reason. When we got up and began walking out, we counted eight available tables up front and there were two in our section, plus there was a room in the back with tables. WHY would a manager ruin a mostly positive experience with such a rude, offensive, and unnecessary request? We had confirmed it was the manager who told us to leave because we mentioned what happened to the hostess (who seemed mildly surprised) and she confirmed the man who had told us to leave was, indeed, the manager. My wife is from Chicago and has been to the Original Pancake House near where she grew up and she had never had an experience like ours in a city that is SO much larger and busier than Woodmere, Ohio. We may try to give this place another shot since the food and service was good. I did let the corporate office know we were offended by the manager's rudeness. Their corporate office was responsive and apologetic, so I give them bonus points for hearing our concerns. read more

Friendliest wait staff I've encountered at a chain restaurant in a long time. Food was a hit. I went to see if they could compete with IHOP and it was definitely just as good, however just as far for me to drive! I am severely disappointed by the sharp decline in customer service under new management. My family arrived 30 minutes before closing and instead of a standard greeting, we were instantly rushed to order. While we stood there, the hostess went back and forth with who appeared to be the manager trying to figure out if a waitress was even available. They openly debated it right in front of us, with one of them stating, "well they'll just have to wait," without ever actually addressing us. To make matters worse, the manager was seated at the front desk, tearing apart pancakes with his bare hands and shoving them into his mouth. If I could give zero stars I would. Today we visited to celebrate the parents' birthday and grab some food before a travel day. 4 bites into my plate and I have pulled out about 6 inches of a long blond hair. We called the waiter over and after 3 seconds of slowly pulling out the rest of the hair it had snaked through the entirety of my meal. Of course they replaced it but they then tried to charge us twice for the re-make. They never looked at the people waiting for tables ever in the 5-10 minutes were waited. The group ahead of us said they had been on the phone since they arrived. A suggestion to management - people who made the effort to come in and are willing to eat in and tip your employees should have priority over phones. A really fun spot to come with friends and or family! It's perfect for a group of four since they get a bit crowded - but not in a bad way, it's an upbeat and fun ambiance! I don't know if the cook was lazy in making the omelette or if it was intentionally made this way, but it was just a blob of puffy egg with the ingredients (corned beef hash) mixed in. It had no structure, i.e. wasn't folded, like you expect. It was unseasoned and tasteless. Approximately an hour before closing, while many people were still eating lunch, the staff began to clean up the restaurant, using perhaps the loudest vacuum cleaner known to man. Large menu with various options. When you come to The Original Pancake House you have to get pancakes one would think. Luckily many of the dishes come with pancakes and its indicated on the menu. So if you just want pancakes you can get that but you can also get omletts or breakfat meat and pancakes for example. I got the eggs, hashbrowns and byttermilk pancakes. I also tried the blueberry pancakes. The pancakes were fluffy and looked good but for being the original pancakes house the flavor was not all that. When you have an establishment that boasts being a down home diner, I want to be "Honied" and "Sugared" by my wait staff. I want the innocuous "George" to walk in and be greeted by name. Here, that was not the case. It is more of an upscale diner than anything else and not really my scene. It was clean and bright though and I always appreciate that. I was promised great waffles. So I thought I would give it a try. The eggs Benedict were perfectly cooked with scrumptiously runny yolks. The home fries had onion sauteed throughout and were super delicious and savory. However, if your menu item says "bacon waffles" I want bacon in every bite. It wasn't evenly distributed and about 2/3 of the waffle was just waffle. That was a little disappointing. The waitress was polite and efficient but I need more than one cup of coffee with breakfast (caffeine junkie that I am) and was not asked if I wanted another one until we were ready to leave. This location is in a high traffic area and can easily be missed if you aren't paying attention. I came here with my family from Nashville to eat breakfast before we started our day. We got there pretty early (930am), but there was a VERY long wait to be seated. We had a large party so it didn't make it any better. We waited for almost an hour to be seated and you know how that gets if you're hungry. But ill say that the manager there was excellent when it came to keeping the establishment running efficiently. Yes, it was busy but as soon as you were able to sit down your table was ready immediately. As for the food, it was hot and I didn't have one complaint about it! I ordered pancakes (of course), bacon and eggs over medium. Everything was delicious and our waiter made sure that we were taken care of! We thought we'd take the kids for breakfast since there's no school for Good Friday. When we arrived around 9am and they said 30-40 minutes, but the manager assured me that it won't be too-long, it's more for setting expectations. Five minutes later, we were being seated! EVERYBODY is so nice and helpful, not just with the customers but with one another! The food is delicious. Aside from Marie Scrambler in Mayfield, this is the other place I love getting "original-plain" pancakes. My go-to is the corned beef hash with eggs and pancakes. You get the salty and savory, along with the sweet. My daughters got the crepe, one got the pigs in a blanket and the 3rd got fresh strawberry pancakes. If there's an issue, it would be that they're out of several items in the menu. We tried to order waffles and they're out, a people around to us tried to order other items and they didn't have that, or hot chocolate. I can almost understand, with how hard things are to get or how expensive they are. ‍ Over all, great experience, we were in and out in under an hour. All our kids were happy with the food!
