Everything necessary to conduct a modern life can now be purchased at Wal*Mart, Amazon.com, or Dunkin' Donuts. Little deli-markets in otherwise completely residential neighborhoods like this one simply have no reason for existence other than nostalgia and/or a marginal level of convenience. Yet they stay open. And I can't imagine someone is making big bucks in the cigarette/lottery ticket/off-brand donut sales business. They're probably doing it as a commitment to the community, for the love of the business, and a sense of pride. A cup of joe, a good bacon egg and cheese on a hard roll for three bucks, a donut with bacon on it, just because the maple frosting wasn't unhealthy enough. Fantastic. Basic foods and sundry items as well. A little deli in back, a small selection of beer. You keep going back, not because it's the absolute cheapest, but because it's the right thing to do.
