Went to with my daughter for special Father-Daughter evening this past Friday for a watercolor lesson and the entire experience was simply FANTASTIC! From the greeting we received, to the wonderful and patient lesson from our local instructor and the end when we walked out with our frames prints it was all a memorable experience. I have lived in Olympia now for over 10 years and while I have looked inside and seen the various goods they have, this was the first time I actually had the experience. Took my mom here while she was in town visiting. It was our first time. They have all their ceramics lined up with the prices listed underneath them. They have a variety of plates, cups, bowls, and figures. Each table has all the paints and a little platter to show a sample of each color. They also sell ice cream and drinks (wine, coffee, liquor, Italian soda). The staff was really helpful and friendly. After your done, they take your masterpiece and fire it up in the Kiln. Make sure to keep your receipt for proof of purchase when you pick it up. My mom really enjoyed this place! It was a last minute idea and it turned out really nice. Not just one of those paint-yer-plate/cup/novelty item places, it's also a place to get coffee and ice cream! Olympic Mountain ice cream, that is, and usually at least six different novel flavors are offered. I'm usually not into these types of places, but the open atmosphere and whimsical artwork on displayed pieces inspire me to go in and spend an evening trying my hand at making a custom-designed soap holder (or something). I must admit, I am not an artist. Try as I might, no amount of inspiration or practice makes my hands any less shaky. Yet each time I come to The Painted Plate, I have the opportunity to think outside the box, use parts of my brain I otherwise neglect and create a one of a kind piece that will be a reminder of the wonderful time I had. I wish the space was larger, as the popularity of the location can be overwhelming on a weekend afternoon, but the current location has such a special energy it would be a shame to change anything. read more

Went there this evening with the hub for some friends' grad party. Lots of things to paint (glaze), and really helpful staff- I just wish we were a little more talented with a brush! At the relatively affordable price, though (we escaped with an evening of fun for $26.90), we'll probably come back for date nights at some point in the future and fine tune our skills. read more

Had wanted to visit a place like this forever and I'm so glad my friend decided to have a wine--drinking, painting-decoration-making birthday party here! We had six people and it was amazing. Pictures of our creations were posted all over social media and we became the celebrity artists we always dreamed we could be. Go and achieve your own art dreams. We will be back. The staff also called me personally to tell me my plate was ready. When I asked what the brand of plate-hangers they use to hang all their plates on their wall was (I needed to hang plates on walls, obviously) they called me again to tell me the brand and where to buy it. My friends and I decided to stop by when walking through downtown. We had never done anything like this before but were pretty interested in trying it. The girl who was working quickly talked us through the process but failed to mention that it takes 6 days to get our painted pieces back. I honestly can't say if they have a sign anywhere but I wish we would've known since my friends only had 2 days left before flying back home. This was my very first time doing anything like this and I did not leave disappointed! In fact, I'm already planning my next trip. Let me start off with saying that the staff was so helpful. They were insanely busy, but they definitely went out of their way to answer our questions and take our order (they have coffee, ice cream, wine, snacks, etc.) Very genuine ladies! The pieces range from under $20 to over $50 depending on what you want to paint. The rest is up to you! We were lucky to get a table without making a reservation, but it was pretty busy so I would recommend making one unless you're okay with waiting. I had a reservation and they were not that busy when they first opened. The gal that "greeted" us wasn't friendly, at all. No smile or anything, just, "can I help you?" I've never been in before, she gave a very brief how to pick out items to paint, which was fine, not much explaining needed for that. I asked some clarifying questions (clearly indicating I've never been in). We got our pieces and very snarky asked if we needed instructions. We kindly replied that we did. She quickly went thru the directions and asked if we wanted anything to drink. My friend ordered a water and the worker NEVER brought her water the 2 hours we were there, nor did she ever check on us, but would check in with the other tables.... just from my first time being there and the poor service from the one gal, I won't return. The other worker was very bubbly and helpful to the other tables. Also, the tables are VERY close together! Very hard to maneuver around with such delicate items. read more

I took my sweet 7 year old neice here and had so much fun! The atmosphere was warm, friendly, and creative. The staff was really helpful and so kind to my sweet girl. My daughter loves this place and whenever she has a reward activity to use or has saved money, she chooses to go there. She LOVES IT. The low score comes in because of all the tears I have had to dry because when she goes to pick up her painted project- it's no where to be found and THEY OFFER NO CONSOLATION, no refund nor replacement. Took my kids to go paint here. It was fun for them and myself. Crowded but otherwise everything was great.

Been here many times. My only recommendations is to walk in the door with a clear idea of what you want to paint and have a plan. Without one, you end up using alot of time just trying to choose a piece, a color or a design. Bring snacks and beverage because you will be here for awhile! read more

I came here today with two friends of mine thinking we were going to have a fun and calm experience. That was not at all the case. I had made a reservation and our table was ready, which was nice. But I noticed that they had written on the table that our time was 1-3. I was not told this when making the appointment so clearly we were not prepared for a 2 hour time limit. We picked out our pieces to paint, ordered some wine, and were given instructions. And that was it. We never again received any help or attention. it was so loud and chaotic in there. It was crowded and the set up was horrible. You couldn't get to the wall to look at the pieces, you couldn't get around the room, you couldn't even sit without being bumped into because it was so cramped. The selection of pieces to paint was miniscule. The supplies were extremely limited. We felt completely rushed which made it harder to enjoy, but at the same time we really couldnt wait to get out of there. I could go on and on. Ultimately it was a loud, uncomfortable, chaotic experience and I will never do it again. I have been to places similar to this that are much more calm and organized with a much larger selection of pieces and supplies. I even asked if it was always like this and I was told yes and that if we wanted a calmer experience we would need to come on a weekday during the day. Yeah that's great and all except that we work. I mainly just want people to know what they are getting in to if they decide to come here. I wouldn't recommend it. read more

We did a holiday staff party here (9 total people) and it was a great success! Our staff enjoyed getting creative and celebrating a little bit together. Loved the party package options because it made planning super easy! Espresso and non-espresso drinks were fun and festive. Made for a really fun night together! Super helpful staff who are creative and casual and just really nice all the way around. The studio was incredibly clean and well organized. I love this place! Went here a lot as a kid but just recently decided to go in here on a rainy day just to check it out. Oh am I glad I did! They serve wine and ice cream, customer service is impeccable, and they have sooo many things to choose from to paint. Pleasantly surprised! We came here for some time killing fun. Before I knew it I had to take a walk to put more money in the meter. They have so many different things to paint. Bowls, plates, serving dishes, mugs, tea pots, pet bowls, jewelry boxes, figures, on and on, different shapes and sizes. They have lots of stamps and stencils to use to take your pieces to the next level. It brought me back to my high school art class days. It was fun to decorate something we will be using for years to come. Can't wait to see the awesome dog bowl I painted. By the way you don't take your masterpieces home with you right away. There is a five day wait for your pottery to be cooked. Also you can expect the price to be about $20-$25 a person. Good times. read more

I came here on a Friday with my daughter's thinking this would be a fun activity. We made a reservation 2 days prior. We came on time and they were busy which is to be expected on spring break but they still had a few tables empty. We waited approximately 20 minutes and nobody helped us I was starting to get upset so I went up to get help the girl was very polite no sorry for having to wait then she said I'll be back in a minute. 20 more minutes later still no help. Its now going on 45 minutes and someone comes around to help I explained to the girl I have been waiting over 40 minutes and she stated well we are busy. I am sorry but no 10 to 15 minutes totally understandable but 45? That's ridiculous! I won't t be back! read more

My husband and I were in Olympia one afternoon, and I noticed that I kept seeing signs for Olympic Mountain ice cream everywhere. Even though it was barely 70 degrees out, I knew we had to try it. We popped into the Painted Plate even though it was teeming with loud kids. We were able to get some FREAKING DELICIOUS ice cream and were out the door in minutes to enjoy our ice cream outside. This place is so much fun!!! They serve coffee, beer and wine?! Yes! We did the "Date Night" special for $40. We were able to choose from a selection of items to paint. We went with the coffee mug and a plate. Included in the price of the special we could choose and drink from the menu. The coffee I chose was delicious! The only complaint I had were the crazy kids but their mom's were worse. They were literally screaming at their kids the entire time. Not the fault of the place but I do wish they would have asked them to calm it down. It wasn't like it was a Saturday morning, it was late on a weeknight. The place was full of couples. I really enjoy crafts, and this is right up my alley. The staff are friendly and helpful without hovering, and I've heard good things about the espresso/ice cream bar. My main objection is that it is prohibitively expensive if you are just looking to paint something for fun. read more
