Good prices with most sandwiches priced at $11.45. Very trendy and interesting variety of sandwiches. There is something for everyone except for the pickiest of eaters. There are lots of tables. The sound level ideal as it was pleasant and yet we could have a conversation without feeling conspicuous. The sandwiches were delicious. I swapped half my roasted vegetable sandwich with my wife who had a turkey with avocado sandwich. They were both very good. One thing was that the bottom of mine was soggy but that happens. The turkey sandwich bun was not at all soggy. We enjoyed our drinks and sitting and watching the people go by. The staff were friendly and helpful. You wait for drinks at the counter but they bring food orders to your table. That's a great way to to it as it doesn't take nearly as long to make drinks as it does food. We were walking so I can't comment on parking. I'm sure they have WiFi but I didn't check. I highly recommend Coffee Matters because they've got what I like. read more

Super friendly service! Lots of seating options, but a lot of the tables are usually full. The food comes out quick. I ordered a small Pasta Salad for a quick snack and a banana hot chocolate, which I'd never even heard of before. The pasta salad was delicious and just what I needed - the balsamic glaze and pear paired beautifully with the tomatoes and penne. The banana hot chocolate, though, was so much more memorable for me - I downed that so fast! It's such an odd flavor, but it really works. (Even though it's not that odd when you think about it. It's like a hot version of chocolate-covered frozen bananas.) Definitely worth a try! read more

Got carry out sandwiches on a Sunday afternoon. There was only one cashier and one cook and a lot of customers. They got most of our order wrong which we did not discover until a few hours later when we had our sandwiches. I asked for a swap of Swiss cheese instead of provolone on my chicken and apple sandwich, and that did not happen. I ordered a raspberry yogurt muffin but got blueberry instead. Sandwiches were quite sparse on the meat, but liked the flavor combinations for both the chicken and apple as well as the traditional turkey. I don't like focaccia bread and wished they had other options, although the bread was very fresh. The muffin was pretty dry and crumbly. This place is perfect to get some studying done or just a comfy place outside your home to hang out, relax and snack. They have a hot menu and a sandwich and simple drink menu. I'm from out of town and I've been here twice in a few days so it's local and non local friendly. Everything is decently priced each visit has been between $15-25 dollars and all food and drink was made hot and quick. There is paid parking adjacent and street parking if you find it. There are two bus stops just outside so it is quite accessable by transit. Coffee matters is also a five minute walk to St John's government house and Bannerman park should you want to take your snack to go and eat in the park. This place doesn't have a lot of space for a big group of more than 4-5 people but it is great for kids. read more

On our trip to St.John's we have been here several times! Try to go in the morning for hot and fresh muffins. Not quite as good when they have been sitting. Recommend the chocolate chip, raspberry yogurt and cinnamon coffee. Caramel latte has great flavour and their Chai latte is on the lighter side of strength in chai or maybe it was that barista's version? Hard to tell. Nice local spot! read more

Popped into this cafe an hour or so before my flight heading back to Halifax.. what a gorgeous space! If I lived there I would definitely be a regular. The spot was hopping on a Sunday morning and I enjoyed my experience. I see some people have issues with the internet policy, but obviously that wasnt on my priority list that day. I ordered a breakfast scone, delicious!!!!!!!!! Think an egg mcmuffin gone to heaven! It was served with a little dish of fresh fruit, yogurt and granola - I mimicked this at home and had the same thing for brekky this morning. My friend had the creme brulee for breakfast, you cant really go wrong with that! She said she wished she could turn the dish inside out to lick it, ha! My bf had a massive cinnamon bun, it was SOOOOOOOOOO good. I also tried the oatmeal apple muffin, I took it home and ate it when I landed back in town. Coffee matters knows how to make great food, the service was friendly and they also have a nice water dispenser out for patrons so that they dont have to ask for a glass or refill. Aside from the actual location, which is lovely, there is nothing positive to say about this place. The staff are unfriendly and the managers are always shouting, they have time limits on tables and will shoo you out if you linger too long. There are flies galore! Even in winter! The most important thing, the food and beverage aspect, is not so great. My espresso was all grinds in the bottom, burnt and nasty, and the sandwich had good fillings but the bread was SO stale it was inedible. AVOID at all costs, there are too many great alternatives close by (Hava Java, Coffee & Company, even Tim Hortons is a step up). read more

I'm a fan of coffee matters. The americano, chai/green tea lattes... and it's all fair trade! Couches, fireplaces, window side tables, its a really comfortable spot, and easy to end up here chatting with friends for hours. It definitely fills a much needed gap in St. John's, of an upscale coffee shop with a great breakfast/lunch menu. The paninis (especially the chicken apple) are amazing, and are served with a mini side dish. The breakfast sandwich was definitely one of the best I've had for the price, and the fruit/granola/yogurt combo on the side is a great touch. The presentation was also surprisingly nice. My only disappointment, was requesting a green tea only to be served a plain old tetley tea bag, if they don't have them already, some specialty teas would be a nice touch for tea drinkers. I actually visited Coffee Matters in September during a trip to St. John's for a conference. I was visiting the city on my own, and was staying at the nearby youth hostel. All of my non-conference meals were at Coffee Matters, not just because the unassuming atmosphere was suitable for a table-for-one, but also because everything there was delightfully tasty! The coffee is great and the staff are friendly. Every meal I ate there was fantastic. A couple of times I had the soup , and once I had a pasta salad. The portions weren't overwhelming (I was adequately whelmed), and the prices are very reasonable. I hereby recommend! read more

Good hot chocolate here, and great atmosphere for coffee with a friend (or a date!). It'd be nice to study here but I feel reluctant to ever since the whole conflict between students and management. They don't like you to have laptops here at peak hours, which is fine if there aren't free tables, but I don't see why you shouldn't be able to relax here for a couple of hours and study while there are free tables for other people to use. Plus, people will sit here for hours with friends and chat, only buying one drink. Why shouldn't people be able to sit for hours and study/read? Seems a bit unfair. read more

A 'chain' in St John's with 3 locations. This one is near the Fairmont hotel. I used to actually walk 20 minutes to a different location til I discovered this is virtually across the street from the hotel. It has been a saviour in St John's, providing surprisingly good espresso for a weary traveller. I hate Tim Horton's (gasp - I know... horrible me) so had trouble finding any decent java when here on business (frequently). Not only is their coffee decent, they have a funky menu with everything from a dedicated breakfast menu, to tasty panini sandwiches for lunch which run about $8 a piece. A double espresso and bagel for breakfast this morning ran just under $5. Average price for same in most decent coffee bars. Full of upscale decor, plenty of material to read at a variety of tables as well as overstuffed couches set beside a central fireplace. Nice spot. I'm a fan. read more

Their winter hours are posted as closing at 10pm January-March, otherwise 11pm. I arrived at 9:30pm expecting to get about an hour of studying in. Apparently they now close at 10pm, and when I went to order they told me they only had drinks, no food (not even the cakes at the counter) despite it being 30 minutes before closing. I ordered a tea and went to quickly check my e-mail, but their 'free wifi' was not working. I asked them to reset the router as often the neighbors nearby use the wifi and you cannot connect. They said they would but did not. This place has gone way downhill. The staff are aloof and don't really seem to give a shit. I recommend Rocket Cafe and bakery down on Water street instead, or your local Tim Hortons. read more

There is a "time limit' during busy times, but I did not see that there was ever a true shortage of tables or anyone being rushed out. Everyone seemed as happy as I was. They need more staff to help keep the place tidy, while I am there, people 90% of the time leave everything at the table and not return it to the front... Always untidy because there is never much people on shift to allow someone to step away from the till and clean. I often needed to bring someone else's stuff back to get a seat. read more
