Cool funky setting. Chips and salsa was ok. Nothing special. I ordered the lemongrass chicken rice bowl. The rice was undercooked, and it only had 3 small pieces of chicken. My group ordered the jefe tacos in KFC, Baja, and coconut shrimp. They looked good, but all were flour tortillas, and all were heavily battered, and I avoid gluten. Hence the lemongrass chicken rice bowl, that was essentially undercooked rice. The soft drinks came in these skinny glasses full of ice, so they were also over priced. Be Here Now! Best tacos I've had. They are artists. They deliver delicious satisfying food that you will be asking for again and again. Was with a big group trying to have a little afterparty for a concert downtown, didn't make a reservation anywhere since we had no idea how many people would be coming. We looked at a few other big places but the patio at The Pawn Shop was the only place we found that could fit us where the music wasn't too loud to think let alone hold a conversation (it was pretty loud inside but still more reasonable than most of the other bars on Granville at night). I have a friend who likes this place mostly on the basis that it's (relatively) cheap, so I didn't have especially high expectations for quality, but I thought my food was actually really good! I had the artichoke & avocado bowl. The artichoke gave it a different sort of flavour than you usually get in Mexican/Mexican-inspired food and the fried avocado was also an interesting and different texture. I liked that it was something unique. For vegetarian options, you also have the option to sub in artichoke for the meat in the other burritos/burrito bowls, so it's a very vegetarian-friendly menu, and I would be interested in trying more bowls. I had a coconut margarita to drink. The shredded coconut rim was a nice touch. For the most part the staff was friendly and the service was consistent and timely even though we were served by a few different people. Maybe it was because they split us up between 2 picnic tables, but there was no auto gratuity for the big group even though they waited on us together. And as mentioned above, the prices are really reasonable. I'm glad that we ended up here by necessity and would come back again by choice. read more

A year later and I've made it back to the Pawn Shop. Circumstances are very different, but my visit was motivated by Miracle on Granville. Yes, your social media promos worked their magic on me and I couldn't wait to be immersed in all of the Christmas Holiday glory. I made a reso online and checking in was a breeze. Guests get to visit the Pawn Shop's Christmas Tree village and vote for their favorite organization. There was even a photo opp with a background and selfie stand. It was a nicely presented greeting. Once our table was ready we popped on over to the normal side. Whoa. The Pawn Shop has transformed and it looks like Christmas has exploded onto every single surface it could manifest on. Walls were covered in bows and wrapping paper, the bar had Nutcrackers and mini Christmas trees, looking around Elf of the Shelves were hiding and hanging in every nook and corner, naughty lil elves. The atmosphere was festive fun. I had a blast trying the different specialty cocktails they threw together just for Miracle on Granville. We sipped on a Christmas Carol Barrel, Jolly Koala, Jingle Jangle Nog and a SantaRex and munched on the Christmas Nachos. You can see where I'm going with this. Hands down, my favorite was the SantaRex, minty tequila was knocking me into a winter wonderland, it's two things I would never have thought to pair together. With Covid and a complete cancellation of festivities this year, Miracle on Granville hosted by the Pawn Shop was one activity I anticipated, dressed up for, drank and was merry. I love coming here for snacks and pre before a long night! One thing though is the bill always adds up.. it's so easy to overspend here as everything seems reasonably priced but portions for the tacos are a bit small. The vibes and service here are amazing, super lively and great music. The decor is super cute and unique too, I've never seen any place like this! It's always packed though so I highly recommend making a reservation. As for the food I'm going to keep it short and simple: You can't really go wrong with any of the foods here but here are a couple suggestions! Do get: the OG dirty burrito (humongous and delicious. You will be stuffed and is worth every penny) Jalapeño poppers. Been here a couple times and it's just okay but yesterday had an experience that will probably stop me from coming back anytime soon. Pride weekend, super busy everywhere. My friends and I are pretty easy going and understand we need to be in and out. We sit at a communal table, our server arrives and takes our drink order and one food order. She comes back and gets two more food orders. No drinks in sight. 25 minutes later, some of our food comes out. We ordered shared nachos with some sides of guac, pico de gallo, and sour cream. Someone drops off the nachos and it's a single order. And we get no dips. We have to flag down another server to ask if it's the single and she says it is and she'll get our server. When our server comes back she says it's the single and the shared is really big and are we sure. There were five of us and also who cares? The others get their food and after 40 minutes we finally get our drinks. 3 of us ordered spiked slush and there was no slush? If your blender is broken and it's gonna take 40 minutes every time to make a drink, tell us so we can order something else We finally get the nachos and the dips and the guac is sad and brown and the pico is just salsa from a jar. Not to mention we ordered the nachos without jalapeños and there were jalapeños. At the end of our meal we just wanted to leave. The server at no point seemed apologetic about anything happening and it was super hard to get ahold of her. We knew it was busy but saying sorry and meaning it makes a huge difference. Having walked by here literally hundreds of times I just assumed it wasn't good because it's Granville St and it's cheap. The tacos seemed to be the standout and everything else on the menu was close to $20. They have five tacos currently - three are meat and two are veg. Tried four of the five - no mushroom, and the cauliflower was swapped for artichoke. This is not authentic Mexican but they were tasty bites - small corn tortillas and good amount of toppings, small selection of hot sauces. Difficult to pick a favourite as all were great. We've come back every night our whole stay. We really enjoyed this place! One thing that caught us off guard is they need 2 forms of ID. I had to use my DL and credit card and my boyfriend his DL and passport. We're from California, so we aren't use to that. Overall, the drinks were amazing! We order wings and they were good. Went here the other night with my friend since I was starving and craving tacos. It took about 15 minutes for us to get seated since it was a busy saturday night but the staff were so funny and nice and checked our covid passports during the wait. The ambience inside is really fun, it's dark inside with some neon lighting and fun loud music, definitely fun to go with a couple of friends. The food came fairly fast, only 10 minutes wait. I got 3 of their boujee tacos - 1 KFC (korean fried chicken) taco and 2 steak tacos. The KFC taco had a piece of korean fried chicken with gochujang sauce, lime crema, cabbage slaw, scallions, and crushed peanuts. It was my least favourite out of the two and I wish it had a bit more umami flavour. The steak taco was absolutely delicious, it was cooked perfectly, medium rare and came with guacamole and pickled onion. I feel like some of the ingredient pairings in these tacos are a little mish mash and doesn't pair too well, however it is still delicious, just not perfect. The Pawn Shop was the perfect place for me to get tacos while having the munchies, I wouldn't reccomend this place as somewhere to take your family, kids or parents but this place was really fun, definitely will return. read more

Years ago, if you would have told me I'd be giving a great review to Pawn Shop, after receiving lackluster service at almost all of the city's other mainstays, I'd call you crazy. Food 5/5 -- Affordable, good Mexican food with lots of vegetarian options. You really can't go wrong. Their happy hour and taco Tuesdays are on point, and they have plenty of larger options for people who are more hungry. Personal favorite are the Cauliflower tacos. Service 5/5 -- First time I went here for happy hour with my girlfriend, we sat at a table and got good service from a very attentive server who was unfortunately not very personable. Nevertheless, I don't judge hard on that because I reject the idea that all servers have to be this cookie cutter formula of bubbly air heads. If your friendly and attentive, those are the key things I'm looking for in server interactions, and they were that. The next two time I sat at the bar and had different bartenders each time. They were both great. Attentive, friendly, and they actually tried to sell me stuff -- this needs being mentioned because 90% of the time it seems like you have to wave down bartenders for in this city if you want food, or another drink. Seriously, trying to sell to your customers should be the standard by now! Cleanliness 5/5 -- For a Granville street bar it's actually pretty much spotless every time I come here. Even the bathrooms! No sticky spots anywhere, tables are maintained in a timely manner. No pee smell. Atmosphere 5/5 -- The interior design is cool, but it's not for everyone. It has retro-industrial meets Mexican street bar kind of design. The lights are kept dark, with lots of multi-colored accents from string lights and similar; lots of vibrant colors everywhere. The graffiti style mural in the front is awesome, and there are tons of wood and concrete to round off the industrial look. Overall 5/5 -- Are you surprised?
