I picked up a box of Palo Santo incense and at the checkout asked one short question since everything in store has a "ask for a sample, do not open" sign. Me: Are these square-shaped? The stores rep: Yes, they are. At home, I opened the box only to find rounded log-shaped briquettes instead. The incense also doesn't come with any kind of mini tray or holder (most of them do). I am genuinely not sure how they're meant to be burned without damaging floors or furniture. Disappointing customer service, I will not be going back. read more

No offer to get a new back or call the designer or give a spare back. Terrible service. If you're going to sell expensive jewelry, you should have good service. I followed an online path that led me to Santa Fe Culinaria Blue Corn Piñon Pancake Mix. Santa Fe Culinaria is actually in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Their "Where to Buy" California listings included The Perish Trust on Divisadero Street. "Well," I thought, "I've got to go to Kaiser on Geary and Divis tomorrow. Maybe I could drop in and see if they've got any of this Blue Corn Piñon pancake mix." After leaving Kaiser, I cruised down Divisadero into The Perish Trust's neighborhood. I was plotting out my San Francisco Parking Strategy when a car pulled out of a space in front of me. I thought, "God must want me to visit this place, so I'll take that parking spot." I walked down the block and into The Perish Trust. Soon as I walked through the door, I was given a bright smile and a friendly greeting. I let the woman know what I was there for; she jumped up, led me to the blue corn piñon pancake mix, and handed it to me. It was such a nice encounter that I'm looking forward to the next time I get to visit The Perish Trust. Yes, I was drawn to the Warby Parker show room after virtually trying on pairs on the website. While the display is kinda tight, it's totally fine when fellow four eye folks cooperate and let one another try on the same frames :) The sales associate was very helpful, suggesting that I take a look with the glasses in the outdoor sun- which made a huge difference! Lastly, he wrote down the model, color, and the $5 coupon code. With my high index lenses, the complete set of glasses cost $120. Do bring a trusted friend/relative to help decide which frames flatter, since this isn't a Lenscrafters that staffs a half dozen optical technicians with expert advice :) read more

I always check out other reviews before I write my own, one review mentioned how no sales people addressed her when she came in. I actually like it when no one bothers me while I'm browsing! Especially a store of this cozy size. When I did have a question, it was easy enough to flag down the person at the desk AND she was extremely helpful. The saleswoman is friendly and helpful. In the back corner of the store is the Warby Parker eyeglass frames popup. The selection of lovely designs is large. The frames appear quite delicate. As anyone reading this is probably already aware, I recently had a negative customer service experience at the Perish Trust. The owners have now personally contacted me and apologized for my bad experience. I respect their willingness to take responsibility for the incident, especially in the face of the unexpected publicity my story generated, and I am updating my review accordingly. They also addressed the condition of the item mentioned in my very first review back in December '08, which was an extra touch I really appreciated. Thank you to all of the Yelpers who've expressed your sympathy-- I hope you'll give the Perish Trust another chance as I think this has been a learning experience. I'm a fan of Warby Parker eyewear- I love my pair of Miles eyeglasses and I've been on the lookout for another pair of WP glasses for a while. The online store is awesome and the staff are fast and helpful with answering questions. I visited this store, hoping to try out some of the new collection they added this year. And as much as I love how clever the virtual try-on is online, nothing beats trying on glasses in person, right? I visited The Perish Trust on a Saturday around 4, thinking it wouldn't be very busy at all. There were four or five people in that very tight corner of where the "showroom" was located and I was immediately told by the woman working there that I needed to wait for a few minutes because they have to limit the amount of people in the showroom and she suggested I browse around the store. That's understandable. But was there really anything to browse at after 15 minutes of circling the small shop? There should be more seating in this place, or have the glasses area spread out more so there'd be more room to look at them. After I was advised by the woman working there that I could go inside the "showroom," I was left to my own devices with trying glasses on. I was totally fine with that and for a good five to ten minutes or so I was trying on glasses. What would've been customer service from the woman working there is if she said something like, "I can help you as soon as I'm done assisting this customer." But nope, nothing. I tried getting her attention, but she couldn't be bothered. After about another 10 minutes of waiting around, frustrated that I couldn't get any help, I left. What a waste of time. I guess if you have an appointment they can provide better assistance, but the "walk-ins are welcome" note on the web site is a joke. read more

However, while we were walking this very small store for about 5 minutes, neither of us where greeted by the 3 people working there. Are you kidding me? Also, one of the people working there physically blocked me from looking at something, and also I heard her bitching about something. These people are probably new to retail, but I will give them a huge 5 stars for buying merchandise that is unique, interesting, and on trend. Their buying and merchandising is top-notch. I felt like I had been warped back into time and was picking out a present for Ernest Hemingway (as played by my future husband, Chris *sigh* O'Donnell in "In Love and War"). This store reminds me of The Band for some reason. As in The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, I Shall Be Released, and The Weight. It's got this southern, old world charm to it, with just the right amount of melancholy. There's a smattering of knick-knacks and what-nots throughout, just waiting to be discovered. Curious paintings from local artists, antiquated and dusty books, a well-worn suitcase or two, civil war figurines, even a gun lamp. It's definitely an odd time-trip, complete with a barrel of peanuts in the shell (eat some, they're good). The main attraction is their collection of vintage typewriters (and respective cases by the counter). Just looking them over, pressing down on a few keys, you're brought back to another time, one that thankfully didn't include texting and instant messaging, let alone spell check. But if I had to pick my favorite thing about the store, it's that right under the sign "The Parish Trust" are the words "The Perish Trust." What does this double play on words mean? Is the church dying? Aren't we all? Hmm, maybe there was something in those peanuts... read more

This unique store houses some hard-to-find artifacts as it acts as a antique shop and eye glass store. The decor in this place is simply brilliant appearing as if nothing is for sale, while I'm sure it all is regardless of hanging price tag or not. I want to curl up on one of their couches while reading a book printed 50+ years ago. Typing up your latest novel wont be a problem with their mini collection of typewriters. Despite the outside busy car traffic on Divisadero street, the space inside is very serene/quiet and the low lights contribute to the pleasant ambiance. There was a friendly woman and a little kid when I visited. I only came by to buy a box of chocolate caramels, but if I ever have a need to decorate a fancy study room and the cash to pay for it, I'd consider coming back to shop at this store. I came to check out the Warby Parker collection. I emailed the store to see if I could check it out but they said that I'd have to instead make an appointment with Warby Parker directly. It seems odd because the store isn't that big and how hard would it be to train the employees? No harm, no foul. Anyhow I made an appointment with Warby Parker. Finding The Perish Trust was a bit of a challenge. The shop is really small and easy to miss. Once I was inside I wasn't sure what kind of store this is. It's not exactly a decorating store nor is it a novelty store. It's kinda of both? It's stuff that would be on American Pickers yet with a gothic, steampunk, and almost Burning Man-like fascination. They carry things like vintage metal keys, typewriters, ship in a bottle, obscure books, and little trinkets. What makes me scratch my head is who is their customer base? The merchandise isn't useful enough for any interior decorator nor are the items that novel to be sought out by any collector. But hey, if there's a demand for a it more power to them. The Warby Parker showroom takes up one wall in the back. it's not as big as I thought it would be since this is only one of four Warby Parker showrooms in the country. However they did state that the frames available were all the ones that are available online (minus the ones that are out of stock). They have a wall mirror, two hand mirrors, and a smaller mirror on the wall. They also have an iMac where you can take pictures of yourself to compare frames. I was given a $5 coupon on my purchase yet I don't think I'm going to buy them. I'd still recommend trying out Warby Parker if you're curious. _____ I applaud the Perish Trust for such an eclectic range of merchandise. Yet I'm not sure how they manage to stay afloat. Walking down Divis this evening i spied a new looking shop from the other side of the street between Fulton and Grove. I thought it was a restaurant and ran across the street to check it out. To be honest, the name almost scared me off, it looked like it may have been a little culty for me, but the owner saw me looking in the window and invited me in to take a look. He seemed pretty nice and told me that they had just opened a couple of days prior. What a cool little shop. They have tons of antiques including many typewriters, nautical stuff, toys, darts, and other cool stuff. They also feature some artists work that range from cool functional stuff like lamps, to things that are just pretty to look at. I was impressed with a tree painted on a series of plates that were mounted on the wall. This shop would fit nicely on Valencia, or maybe in the Haight with all its oddities, but I'm glad that i don't have to go that far to check out their cool nic-nacs. read more

Swung by to try on some Warby Parker glasses and loved the store and service. I came with some kids I mentor and the folks there were really nice about letting them play on the typewriter and generally goof off while I tried on my frames. Unlike other reviewers I had no issue getting in (they were open when they said they'd be). Unlike any eye glass buying experience I've had...not the least because I didn't have to drop several hundred $ for glasses. The girl/lady at the Warby Parker glasses couldn't be bothered with me. No smile, no sign of life in this dead girl just collecting her minimum wage. And the WP glasses, well, this is no show room, and most of the glasses looked the same in this cramped nook. WP offers more on the web site. Additionally, they are all made in CHINA. Look out as I am sure if you break them you can kiss them good bye. Also, they don't offer progressives for reading. First off, good luck finding this place open. It's right by my house and I've been by over 2 dozen times and only found it open once. I asked if they had hours and they said, "we're generally open on Wed/Thursday evenings and on the weekends." I went during that weekend and they were closed both days. If you do find this place open... then here is my review - minus one star for inconvenience factor: Where has this place been my whole life! It's perfectly my style which I call, "Bohemian Chic meets City of the Lost Children." I walked in to this store and was immediately inspired. I love it. I felt like I walked into an amazing art gallery from another place in time. There's something magical about it. The prices are pretty steep overall. Even though you can virtually try on glasses on the website and you can also have the company mail you 5 pairs of glasses to try on no charge -- this is way more the way to go -- all the glasses are here... no mailing back and forth, no pretend views of your face in glasses. Warby Parker is great because there is usually a pair that will work for you and they do that buy a pair/give a pair system like Tom's Shoes does - which is a good world caring perk. And the glasses are cheap! $95 or $90 if the PT people give you a card with their $5 off promo code. And Perish Trust as an entire shop is pretty neat place to visit all in all - another member of the newer-fangled Diviz gang. read more

This little nook is sort-of a nostalgic time capsule. Beautiful (mostly decorative) antique typewriters everywhere, and a showroom for Warby Parker eyewear. Warby Parker provides beautiful vintage-inspired frames and lenses at a very cheap price. They do a "Tom's" sort of initiative, the one-for-one purchase. You get glasses, and a pair is donated to charity. The showroom in the back, quaint and to-the-point, has a lot of different pairs to try on (by appointment). This isn't a store so much as a museum. So if you thought you were going to go here with the prospect of actually buying something for your home, think again. That's not to say you can't, because you obviously can, but the prices are steep, and the selection is eccentric. It's a treasure trove of beautiful, old, rickety useless stuff! And that's how I like my antique stores. They've got jewelry, trinkets, typewriters, taxidermy, gorgeous old books, all to fill that steampunk-y void in your life. A star off for the prices, I understand that a lot of this stuff is difficult to come by, but some of these things are basically unusable, so why's it cost so much?
