Hey everyone, I have a lot of background in animal care, having a pre-veterinary bachelor's degree and having a job as an animal care provider at an animal hospital for 4 years now. I just started working at The Pet Company in Milford, CT as an animal care tech about a month ago as a second job and what I've seen there has been atrocious.
Here is my laundry list: the whole place smells of feces and the cages have a distinct smell of ammonia. Many of the dogs have worms and kennel cough. I have a strong inclination that they come from puppy mills. The back room looks like it have never been cleaned. I cleaned out one corner of it and found months to years old dog and rabbit feces (I have no idea how rabbit feces got back there since the rabbits never see the back room). Many techs don't wash out food bowls but simply spray them down with water. Proper disinfectant is rarely used, if at all. I've been working there a month and still haven't seen a paycheck. I've heard from many other store associate that they have gone months without being paid. The manager, Jaime, is very weird and disappears into the bathroom for hours at a time or falls asleep at the food court or at his desk in the back room. He's also been hours late to work.
Overall, this business is shady in both how it treats its animals and employees. Please do not buy animals from this store. Let it go out of business. read more
