They have plenty of options for cats and dogs, as well as some for smaller animals. They also have really nice quality items, helpful and kind staff, and a great atmosphere. This is one of my favorite pet supply shops! They also can order in items that are not currently in stock, which can be extremely helpful. They will take time to help you with questions, and give great recommendations. There's also two sweet cats that roam and live in the shop, although they suggest keeping your cats (no problem with dogs) out of their view if you bring them, since they can be territorial. I stopped into the Pet Emporium for a new dog tag, and unfortunately, didn't get one. They are a small, local store, they don't have their own machine and it takes two weeks for the tags to be shipped out and processed to a third vendor. HOWEVER, I did leave with dog ice cream and a bowtie! If you are looking for pet treat, clothes, or supplies TPE has a huge variety and is very convenient if you are already going to Trader Joe's or someplace else in that dreaded parking lot. read more

I adore this pet store. The customer service is consistently helpful. The selection is top-notch, with high-quality products. The store is also dog-friendly. The store has a resident cat too! I also must commend the thoughtfulness and passion the employees have for animals. I was at the store this Saturday, and it was brutally hot outside. The two employees noticed that a man was in the process of leaving his two dogs in the car to go inside a grocery store. Well, one of the employees ran out, talked to the man, and came back with his two dogs. This employee walked this man's dogs inside the store so that the dogs would not be in the hot car. If you have spoken to me for more than three minutes, you know that I have a cat. I love her and she's the best and if you meet her, and tell her otherwise she'll probably eat you. Although A2 is a place where many cat-type people reside (think neurotic, introverted and scared of people), there are times that I feel the need to be skyrocketed into the fourth dimension of kittyville. When my urge to hit this state occurs, I don't have many options. I can visit a cat-related subreddit (lame), host a party with a bunch of cats (dangerous and low-key depressing) or I can go to a store that is full of items to honor my qween, who is my cat. Petco sucks and is lame and Petsmart is really no different and I am still convinced that the people who own Petco also own Petsmart largely because they suck but also because they are indistinguishable. As far as I'm concerned there is only one to satisfy this need. And that is by going to The Pet Emporium, a pet store that isn't the worst. H.C.C, another Yelper, summed up their feelings about the Pet Emporium best when they said "best pet store you can find for CATS!" Not only does Pet Emporium stock the premium wet food that Ms. Jig adores so much, the staff are super friendly. And when I say staff, I am mostly referring to the two cats that reside in the store. Those cats are friendly, offer good reccomendations on toys and aren't rude or bossy (same with the humans employed by Pet Emporium). The only thing that I don't like is the parking situation. Pet Emporium sits right next to Trader Joe's and because it's Ann Arbor, Trader Joe's is always packed and there is no parking. This makes it hard for as I basically don't know how to operate a motor vehicle safely and they offer no valet. If you care about your cat, want to be surrounded by cats while you buy items for your cat and also reside in Ann Arbor, this is the place for you. read more

This place is awesome! What a clean, organized and well stocked store-with such affordable prices! The people here seems to really care about animals, and the store is fantastic. You may also get to say "hello" to the two cats at the store. (Don't worry dog lovers, there were dogs wandering about, and the cats went about their way with out becoming skittish). You can find so many unique and useful things for your pets here from the basics to the fun stuff. I was very pleased to see that they carry HomeoPet and other natural-based products as well. My fiancee and I went here to purchase a few new toys for our cat who was having an issue with licking all of his fur off of his belly out of boredom, and we found all kinds of things to bring home! One of the people working there kindly asked us if we needed help and gave us a few helpful suggestions, and she did so in a laid-back, non sales-pitchy way which was really nice for a change. Their selection of products offers so much more than any of the bigger chain stores, and you may never know what you may find! For example, they had a cat scratching post that was in the shape of a cactus, and another cool sphere-shaped one that doubled as a bed which was made out of bamboo. We also noticed that they sold heated pet pads which aren't the easiest to find. Another perk, they offer a discount to students and U of M employees. If you have a pet and haven't come here yet, you may have made a mistake. This is the place! They carry lots of different foods and have never been out. Lots of treats that you can buy in bulk, my favorite way to buy just about everything. The first time I came in there one of the shop kitties happily rode on my shoulder the whole excursion. (bonus kittie points) They also have an email club that's worth it and they woman who work there are really nice. They played with my dog while I grabbed her treats and even helped practise her training of sit, stay and look adorable. (okay, she doesn't need any more training on looking cute...) I have bought some of my mastiff pup's most favorite, durable toys from The Pet Emporium. However I've found these specific items haven't been restocked and now the shop is lacking in toys for extra-large sized aggressive chewers. I apologize to you big dog owners out there, I bought everything! The staff at Pet Emporium is extremely friendly and made all sorts of suggestions on toys for my hard to shop for pup. They sold me the biggest Jolly Ball I've ever seen! And I bought up their large Nylabone varieties. Now I'm just playing the waiting game for my favorites to be restocked. This place is hands down my favorite pet store around. I've now been here enough times to interact with five or six staff members and they were all incredibly knowledgeable about their products. The selection here, as far as food, toys, litter, etc., is top notch. The store cat Leo is cool as hell and we were lucky enough to stop in for his birthday celebration/sale. My girlfriend and I work in Ann Arbor but live in Dearborn, and we decided to make the trip out on a weekend just to catch the sale, because not only was everything 15% off (cat products) , but the first fifty customers received goody bags. As expected, the goody bags came packed full of cat stuff that I know my cats are going to love. We are now at the point that my cats actually recognize the Pet Emporium bags and will try to sneak towards the bag and try to pull out various treats and toys. I really like this pet store because: 1) it carries hard to find pet food brands 2) is locally owned 3) convenient to stop by while at trader joes 4) has free dog food samples once in a while, to see how the doggies will do with certain brands 5) matches if not beats prices of the larger pet food stores 6) Leaves out water and little treats for the doggies, which comes in handy if they're thirsty after a romp at the dog park 7) has two of the CUTEST kitties ever, that I like to cradle in my arms as I shop 8) They give a discount to Umich employees 9) They host rescue adoption events on weekends (good chance to pet some doggies and get info on different breeds) The only reason I give it 4 stars is because, since they are such a smaller scale pet store, they seem to be often out of stock of the dog food I need when I come by for it. They have always been super nice about offering to order it, but it's frustrating when it has happened the last three times I've been in for it (about a month in between each time). We just moved to Michigan from California, due to my husband's job change. We now live in Canton and were on our way to the AA Trader Joe's (TJ's), which is the closest to us and also happens to be in the same plaza as The Pet Emporium (TPE). I noticed the TPE display window as I walked to TJ's. They had many gorgeous, knitted, dog sweaters, and a variety of quality dog coats on display. After we finished shopping at TJ's, I told my husband I wanted to check out TPE. I had been looking for a quality made dog coat that would fit our 65 pound Great Pyrenees rescue. Due to a recent medical issue, our vet had to shave the fur off Bella's back and she was left with her bare skin showing. I was concerned she might get frostbite walking outside in the current frigid temperatures. I had purchased one for Christmas from elsewhere. However, it was too small and the larger size was sold out. When my husband and I walked into TPE, we were kindly greeted. We told them we were in search of a dog coat to fit our Great Pyrenees and noticed their great display window. A kind TPE staffer led us to the coats and showed us where some additional ones where located in the aisle behind the window coat/sweater display. The TPE staffer also told us what size we should look for to fit Bella, based on her weight. While I looked through the coats for the appropriate size and style, the TPE staffer gave my husband a quick tour of the store and helped my husband find a special treat we wanted for our dog as well. I found a cute pink fleece dog coat in the size the TPE staffer suggested for our Bella. Since we live in Canton, I asked what the return policy was for the store if the coat was not the correct size. I was kindly told that I had up to 30 days are to make my return or exchange. Happy to hear that, we were in the process of making our purchase. However, I also noticed that they had some adorable specialty Valentine cookies for dogs. I quickly asked if we could also add the Valentine cookie to our purchase, which he was able to do. We had a delightful shopping experience at TPE. I was anxious to get home and try the new dog fleece on our Bella the following morning in preparation for heading out the door for our morning walk. Unlike previous dog coats I've purchased elsewhere, this coat was very soft and easy to put on. Bella was abused as a puppy, and is very skittish, and often gets fearful when trying something new. To my surprise, the coat went on quickly and fit Bella perfectly. Also, she showed no fear and looked happy and ready to get out on her morning walk. She did great and seemed to be very comfortable and really enjoyed her walk. When we returned home, I promptly called TPE to thank them again for their help. I recognized the voice of the gentleman who answered the phone, as being the staffer, who had helped my husband and I the day before. I let him know that the coat fit perfectly, Bella loved it, and that we would certainly be repeat customers. He seemed very pleased and happy to get my customer feedback. read more

This place is next to trader Joe's in Ann Arbor so, I passed by it at first. It's in a strip mall type of place. They make homemade treats for your dog, it is smaller then the chain pet stores. The prices are higher on the organic, or natural items. I get my dog's shampoo here because he has allergies on most of the name brand stuff. He even gets dry from oatmeal based shampoos. So, I buy this nature made shampoo with clove in it. He smells wonderful for a long time. I normally buy my pet food at tractor supply but stopped in here instead and their food was the same price. They have a punch card that you can get a percentage off after spending a certain amount in the store. The staff was pleasant, place clean and organized. A lot of selection even though the place is rather small. I do not shop pet smart at all. ..that place is way overpriced so, I'd go here or tractor supply if you want to not be gouged in your pocketbook. read more

They are all super friendly and they've helped me so much with my dog - in fact, some of them even remembered me (and what I bought) when I came back in with him after I got him! It was such a nice feeling that they remembered me and actually cared about how we were doing. Wonderful customer service. There's such a variety of things in this store for all different types of pets, which is awesome. Pricing on food is really great for a local store, it's super tidy, lots of toys. Not only that, but they have a cute little discount card - for every $20 you spend, you get a stamp. Once you get 12 stamps you get a $10 gift card, which is nice! I love coming here and so does my dog, so we'll be coming here for a long time. This is such a cute pet shop! I had called in advance to inquire about small pet strollers. The person who took my call was super helpful and friendly. Likewise, the two staff members were very friendly when I stopped in. I appreciated that they had a model stroller already assembled so that I could test it out. It was great quality but the stroller handle bar wasn't tall enough for me. Again, not the staff's fault. They were super helpful and friendly. I'm so glad Petco was out of my boy's dog food! I was at Arborland in desperate need, after a quick Google I saw that The Pet Emporium was only 1.2 miles away... huh? I've lived in the area for 4 years, how is this news to me? Before I left Arborland I called The Pet Emporium to see if they had the food I needed in stock - they did! The staff member who I spoke with was extremely friendly and offered to keep it behind the counter for me, that was extremely appreciated. Best part? They were priced exactly the same as Petco AND they have a little stamp card to reward you for being a customer - just like Petco. The only reason I'm knocking off a star is the parking lot is always so jammed because of Trader Joe's so it can be an awkward store to get to at peak times. I will be a return customer. read more

For being a small pet store, I've always been able to find some great toys for my cat - her two favorite toys are from here! Recently went to the Pet Emporium for the first time, and I was really wowed by this place. It's a tidy, little store that still manages to carry a lot of great products. For instance, I walked in there with the intention of buying a new treat dispensing toy for my dog. However, I walked out with much more than that (oops) as they had in between sizes for Easy Walk harnesses (something I've never been able to find at Petsmart!) and a sizable Tuffy toy selection which is wonderful if you have a heavy chewer like I do (moreover, the friendly cashier told that they could order any particular Tuffy toy if I requested it). I definitely will be coming back. As a note, as it is a pet store, you are welcome to bring your pet in. However, when I was there, there was a cat that appeared to belong to the store, so owners with dogs who have it in for kitties might just want to be aware of this! read more

I recently decided to check this place out after I picked up groceries at Trader Joes, and I'm so glad I did! Not only are the employees super friendly, but so are the two resident cats. ;) I had to return a bag of food after opening it because my cat decided she didn't like duck, and they gave me a full refund! They don't have the widest selection of cat foods, but my cat is on a grain free diet which they do carry. Prices are comparable to other local pet stores. They also carry a catnip toy ("da fur thing") that my kitty is OBSESSED with. Plus, they have a little reward card where you get a stamp for every $20 you spend. I love the pet emporium. I started shopping there when I moved back to the Ann Arbor area because they carried the canned food my cat preferred at a great price, with a discount if you buy more than 12 cans (any brand, any size!) And they have the punch card where you get a gift card after you fill it up. Now that I'm feeding two kittens (my poor kitty passed away), it was hard running to the store each week for another case of kitten food, since the kittens eat so much more than one small 20 year old cat. The employees at the Pet Emporium mentioned it might be easier for me to order the cases in bulk when I need to. Not only that, if you order so many of the same item, you get a discount! It works out so much better for me than PetCo, Pet People, Chewy, or even Amazon. The level of service is amazing, and I love going there (store cats make everything better). They have such stylish and functional cat furniture (my kittens love their tree!), a good selection of toys, and they introduced me to the Worlds' Best Litter program. The Pet Emporium has a nice selection of good quality products for pets. However I wish that their staff was more educated about the products they carry and were more helpful. I have been in several times looking to buy food and other supplies for my dogs, and the same girl was working every time (except one weekday when they were stocking). She's pretty friendly, however she doesn't seem to know a lot about the products they carry and isn't very helpful unless you know exactly what you're looking for. I have walked out more than once feeling like my questions weren't answered adequately. I have been to many boutiques around the country, and this is probably my least favorite. From now on I will be going to Wags to Wiskers on Stadium Street, who's staff members are quite knowledgeable and very helpful. read more

I love this store. I recently found out about it and have been in a couple of times for some small stuff. They are well priced for the quality products you get. Staff is always friendly and the resident animals are a hoot. The store is well laid out and clean. We are getting ready to pick up our new puppy and want to feed him a specific food. They carry the brand in the store, but not the specific formula. They told me all I had to do was let them know that I want it and they will order it for us. They put the order in on Tuesday and it comes in on Thursday. I could get the same food at Pet Supplies Plus, they already have it in stock, but I would much rather bring my business to this locally owned and run store. The only downside is the crowded parking lot shared with Trader Joe's, but it's not that big of a deal. read more

They do have things for dogs as well, but I don't care so much because there are already tons of dog supplies in those large chains such as petco, pet people, etc. I've been pretty disappointed at those large brands for their lacking cat supplies and selections. This is such a nice little place. Very friendly and helpful staff, wide variety of healthy high quality food, and plenty of toys & supplies. If they don't have a particular food that you want, they'll happily order it for your (no extra charge, although it can take a little bit of time). The 2 resident kittens are adorable, and now a talking bird too (maybe it's a macaw?). I like to support this local store much more than going to Petsmart, etc. I have noticed that they have a much wider variety of dog food than cat food. So I always buy my dog food here, but sometimes end up elsewhere for cat food if there is something I need immediately. read more

This is our favorite pet store in Ann Arbor. It is a very nice store with a great variety of...everything, lol. We've purchased food here as well as a backpack to carry our dog in, a kennel for flights, and, today, we bought a soft gone. The backpack was one that I'd found online and then happened to see in person the very next door here. It is awesome...doesn't sag at all when my dog is in it. The carrier for flights is a Sherpa that you'd find at any other large chain store, except it was less expensive here. And today, we looked at both Petsmart and Petco for a soft cone. Petsmart didn't have any at all, and Petco was selling them for $30 and up. We came here on our way home and they had one for...wait for it...$18.99. Typically specialty/independent stores like this charge MORE than chains. Not here. On top of their amazing variety and prices, they are just plain nice. Every single employee we've interacted with has been super friendly. A special thank you to our new friend, Sarah. She helped us out today as well as the last time Fred and I stopped by. As we were leaving Sarah asked that we let her know what the vet says on Monday after Fred's appt...or she wished us good luck at the vet. One of the two, lol, I don't remember. But she showed concern, and that is awesome. She, along with everyone else, is patient and knowledgeable. It is obvious that employees being informed is important here. Another local pet store in town (I won't name names) had a rude employee at one of their locations, and their other location has employees that don't seem to know anything about the food they are selling (twice I experienced this). Another cool thing is that they hVe a reward type of punch card. Every $20 gets a punch, and when your card is filled then you get a discount of some sort, I believe. Extremely impressed with the staff here. They are very knowledgeable and don't discriminate against pets- we have a pitbull mix and he loves coming in to see the staff and kitties. They carry the best brands around and order special things for our dog with out question. The all natural products are awesome. This is a small, specialty pet store. Their dog selection is much bigger than their cat selection, but they have some nice cat products, including organic cat products. I have a cat with special dietary needs, and they had freeze dried fish treats I can give her. They also offered to research and order frozen food, if it was available (and it turns out it is). In fact, if they don't have something you want or need, don't hesitate to ask for it. If they don't have it, I'm sure they would work very hard to try to find it. The service is incredibly friendly and helpful, and they have two of the cutest cats imaginable roaming the shop. I often see one of them sleeping in the kitty beds. Oh, and maybe that's another thing to note--the two kitties in the shop occasionally use some of the merchandise, like sleeping in one of the cat beds available for purchase. I don't find this a problem. In fact, for me it's a good selling point. If those kitties like it, chances are, so will my kitty. They also work with local animal shelters to offer pet adoption events in the store. So, if you are like me and you feel an ethical obligation to give your money and service to local rather than national stores, I encourage you to visit this place. read more
