I was just wondering about and decided to check out puppies. I always thought about getting one. This place was recommended. I had a small one in mind. On entering there was a variety of pet supplies and to the back there were various puppies. I put my eye on a white maltese. I was asked if I wanted to see one and of course I said yes. We went to a room to have a little play time. I was hooked. The process went smoothly. They explained to me about what shots he had and that he would require a doctors visit. There was also a guarantee that the dog was in good health. I packed up on a few items and I was now a puppy dad. I would recommend this place as a great place to grab supplies or a great pet. Adopted a Yorky puppy from this location about two years ago. It definitely felt like a very sketchy location but I could not leave her. I love the dog and she's had no health issues. I've called twice to asking if there's any siblings of hers available for adoption. They refused to share any information about her breeder/origin and act defensive and weird when I ask. I don't think this is normal- I would suggest supporting a local Humane Society or find a breeder to work directly with no going to them. read more

We are very happy with our new addition to the family, Emi, she is part Pekinese, shitzu and poodle, very healthy and happy. She came to Pet City from a small Amish family breeder. Our older dog, we also found at Pet City, is was from a small breeder in SE Michigan. Pet City uses only local small breeders and all the puppies have their puppy shots and seen by a veterinarian. We checked them out thoroughly before doing business with them. Very wonderful service and nice people to work with, helpful with feeding and puppy advice. read more

I've been visiting this store for 12+ years, just to see and play with the puppies....got my first pup there about 11 years ago, an Aussie border collie mix. I also got a teddy bear pup a few years ago, and most recently a mini bernedoodle. All my dogs are awesome...they were healthy,well socialized, clean and happy when i got them. The store is always clean and puppies look happy and well cared for. Stu and Steve have been awesome with all my dealings. I've recommended them to friends and family and know several who have also gotten great puppies here. Spend a minute talking with Stu and you'll find he is a huge animal lover who has their best interests in mind. I have nothing but positive things to say about the shop and the owner and staff...I love all my dogs and will probably get another before long! Keep doing what you do Stu! Got my dog from here last October. They were very helpful and my dog is great. They did say she would be around 75 pounds, however, she's plateaued around 35-40 which is a lot less than 75. It's not a big deal, I know they can't predict everything. read more

Pets are sickly beware. Staff friendly. Return policy not true. All pet have ear infections. My two puppies did and someone bought one 2 months later and their pup did too. I had told the own about this to check all the puppies ear. One puppy had heart murmur and othe nose too small and may need surgery later. However, I would buy from there again because it's easy to walk in and buy. What can I say for me I just like easy . The puppies are so cute. read more

I went to Pet City Pets the end of February after a friend found them. I was looking for a puppy after my dog passed away. I ended up getting the first puppy I picked up - a Pekinese Shih Tzu/Terrier. She is amazing. She's very smart, she loves everyone and any other dogs she meets. I don't recall a smell to the store that the other reviews mention. All the puppies were active and excited and had clean pens and were cute but not as cute as my puppy. read more

This place is disgusting. First of all, they get their dogs from local puppy mills. And they don't care about them at all!!!! They had Aussie doodles in tiny display containers with NO room! They were miserable gnawing at the plastic window they are given. Even though the dogs were highly stressed and I mentioned something about getting them out for a break, they did nothing. He said he takes them out 2 hours a day..... what!???? On top of the inhumane treatment of their animals - it smells. Don't support this horrible place. read more

I've been going to Pet city pets for about 3 years. Someone referred me to Steve when I had questions about a snake I had purchased from its previous owner. It turns out it was the same snake that Steve had when she was just a new born. My snake is now 4 years old and is such a joy to my life. I've purchased a kitten from Steve and she is the sweetest cat in the world. And now I am bringing home the most beautiful puppy ever! Steve is awesome and know exactly what he is talking about when it comes to any of the animals. He shows nothing but love to each animal and the owners. I cannot imagine myself going to any over priced place when it comes to my snake. He helped nurse my snake back to health when she was wounded. Pet City is a very caring, local shop where the owner and employees take pride in their store, are genuinely concerned about each individual customer and their pets. The quality animals that are sold are well cared for with follow up after the purchase, as the employees are available for any questions and assistance. I have been able to get good advice for the care of my pets there with suggestions of products and other necessary pet supplies there. This store, being local, as opposed to a chain franchise store, has a friendly neighborhood and personal touch in the way they do business. Many of my friends and other contacts have, also, been very pleased with their business and the pets they've purchased from there. I highly recommend them. read more

On the outside, Pet City looks like your typical family owned pet store, and that's just fine. However, the inside takes a turn for the worse. You are met with a dingy looking storefront and the smell of pet waste upon entry. On the left you have a dimly lit area lined with aquariums, and it's center filled with cages and tanks of puppies, rabbits, gerbils, and the like. These aquariums have consistently been dirty, and even have injured aquatic animals. The dog pens are usually inconveniently placed (to be honest, the only part of the store that isn't crowded is what you see when you walk in), but this is usually reserved for their *Puppy Sale.* I'm almost positive that these puppies are from puppy mills, by the way. The rabbits and company are in smelly, dirty tanks littered with their droppings. I'm not sure how often these are cleaned, but judging by the state they were in, not often enough. If you haven't fainted from the smell just yet, you can head over to the right side of the store. On this side you'll find the majority of pet supplies, accessories, and food. There are also puppies and kittens in more comfortable and permanent looking housing. They even have a toy that can be used to play with the kittens through the gates, though the puppy cages are fully covered. The store as a whole feels crowded, dirty, and a bit inhumane. I'm not confident that the owners know (or care?) much about the animals being comfortable or happy. I saw giant fish in tiny tanks, much too many fish in a single tank (I know they don't sell them fast enough for this to be acceptable) half eaten fish in tanks with other fish species they had no business being with, and under-maintained pet tanks. I will never purchase anything from Pet City in fear of promoting the way they run their business. Not pets, not food, not even a collar. I highly suggest that you steer clear of this pet store. Adopt your next pet from a shelter. Buy your pet food from a grocery store. This place doesn't deserve your support. read more

Me and my ex almost a year ago had decided we wanted to get a puppy. after making the decision on a puppy,we had purchased him on a Friday and a week later on a Saturday at 2am he had passed away from parvo. we had taken him into the vet fri being deathly sick, vomiting and major diarrhea. unsure whether not they would give us a refund, we looked at the other puppies and they had diarrhea just like mine did. and when i had told the vet where i had purchased him, they had called it a "puppy mill" they were a hassle for a refund, and i was still left with a $1000 vet bill. definitely do not recommend this place for anyone. they've had several dogs pass away that i've seen in reviews. and the place is disgusting. they should be shut down ! read more

I've been to the Wyandotte location but that store isn't on yelp. However, judging by the reviews I've seen on this one, there's little to no difference between the stores. I went to the one by my house since at first, when it opened, I was delighted to have a pet store finally within walking distance. Despite having a 'no-pets-off-a-leash' rule on the door (I wish I could underline that because it was literally RIGHT THERE), the first time I went in, a woman's chihuahua ran past me when I opened the door to go in. Mind you, this dog was definitely not on a leash. The woman and the staff member at the counter initially blamed me for doing that and even condescendingly asked, "Did you do that on purpose?" rather than pointing out that the dog hadn't been on a leash. Already, kind of a bad experience. The second time, I went to ask if they could cut a cat's nails (I have a very ornery cat and it's hellish to attempt it). I was told to go somewhere else rather than being politely told no. However, my best friend took her cat to the same location for the same reason and he did get his nails cut, but she then noticed when they got home that he had gotten fleas. The problem is, even if we couldn't trace the fleas back there, I wouldn't be surprised if that's where they came from. Which leads to my next complaint. The place is /filthy/. It's dingy, it's dark, it stinks like the cages and the like haven't been cleaned in weeks. The animals all look miserable and they allow some of them to be sold at ages that are MUCH too young. I'm not surprised to hear from other people that the animals they purchase from here are sickly. The puppies definitely look like they've come from a puppy mill, and the staff apparently try to laud these 'puggle' and 'yorkie-poos' as some unique wonderful designer breed rather than just as mixed as something a dog you could rescue from a shelter (and please do that!). Yet even as amazing as they say they are, they keep them in containers that are far too small and dingy for a puppy to safely live in. I seriously wonder if they're vaccinated at all. I'm definitely going to contact our local Better Business Bureau about this place and I highly recommend everyone else with a complaint does the same for their own. read more

In May me and my boyfriend were looking for a puppy and after doing some research we decided to try this place. We walked in and right away the workers asked what we were looking for and led us over to the puppies. There were about 7 or 8 dogs and a couple kittens and right away we saw a blue Doberman (my boyfriends dream dog breed) scratching at the glass and barking so we asked to get him out and we fell in love and new we had to have him. now we have a perfectly healthy 5 month old 40 pound Doberman and we couldn't be happier, he's the sweetest and easiest to train dog I've ever owned . read more

We were able to adopt the most adorable MaltiPoo. She is all black just so darn funny, and we named her Ebony, but we call her Ebby. She loves her cockapoo big sis, she is all white, so we have an Ebony and Ivory family. Just soo cute! I appreciated all the staff at Pet City, their complete tranparency on health, shots, all the important things they are right on! They have a nice assortment of quality foods. I am a pet nutritionist and I know! My pup is healthy, happy, and very much loved. Thank-you to all at Pet City, Ypsilanti store. I am saddened to read some of these negative comments, especially people saying the store smells. NO IT DOES NOT! I have worked for Purina, Nutro, and Blue Buffalo, and have worked in stores all over the state. Pet stores have pets, lots of them, and yes, bedding and the like can smell doggy. ITS A PET STORE! I should preference this review by saying this is the first local store I've been to for crickets for my tarantula. I called them early in the morning to see if they had crickets stocked, they did! So I took the trip over... The staff is VERY knowledgeable and friendly. Even at about 10 oclock AM there were quite a few people in the store already. Their stock is impeccable, you should find what you're looking for in this pet store. I'd recommend to anybody seeking a pet store, this place is absolutely fantastic and have me sold as a customer, I will continue to shop here. Highly recommended! I went here in a recommendation of a friend. I have a fat black cat, very puffy who normally seems to dislike most other humans, besides me. I was nervous about this her first grooming experience to get a lion cut in order to remove a few matty balls and keep her cool. When I came to pick her up, I could just tell she felt at ease, and was not traumatized by the experience, she was not happy, but I could tell she trusted her. I bought my Cavalier-cocker spaniel mix in April 2007 when I was a senior at U-M. He was a "discount doggie" since he was almost 6 months old. He had surgery on both his eyes already to correct his "cherry eye" (sounds like responsible store practice to me), and was sold to me at half price with a month's supply of dog food, treats (those nasty pig ears that he loves), free vet check and a 1 year health guarantee. The cherry eye came back later and he needed more surgery to fix it, but I've read that this is common in purebred dogs bought from small breeders as well. Dr. Lewis at All Creatures gave him a complete clean bill of health at his first inspection (no kennel cough, parasites, or other diseases). I later took him to our family veterinarian, who said the same. At 6 1/2 years old, he's still in perfect health and hasn't had any illnesses. My little spaniel now lives with me overseas. He's been my best friend and the greatest dog I could have ever imagined. He just passed all his exams (at the top of his class!) to become a certified Therapy Dog through the Kennel Club of Finland. Everyone always remarks about how calm, friendly and well-behaved he is, and comments that he's so beautiful and has such an incredibly soft coat. I attribute his excellent social skills and sweet disposition to the extra time he spent at Pet City Pets, where he was handled by many different people, treated with kindness, and well-socialized in a large group of similarly sized and aged puppies. This natural charm is why I chose to name him Amor ("Cupid" in Finnish). Thank you for matching me up with the best dog in the world. I seriously doubt I will ever find as wonderful a dog as Amor. Make your own judgments about pet stores, but knowing all the facts I would still make the same decision to purchase Amor from Pet City Pets. read more

I haven't visited the store in about a year and never plan to visit it again, but when I did visit the store, I left in tears. The visit prompted me to file a report with the local humane society. The rabbit cages were filthy dirty and filled with feces, there were way too many puppies packed in some of the glass cages, and the poor kittens looked like they had ear mites. One puppy in particular was sitting in the corner of his cage, breathing really heavily, looked slightly malnourished and had a cough. I asked one of the employees what was wrong with it, and he stated, "Oh, nothing. He is probably just tired from playing." I told him that the puppy looked really sick and he claimed that they took good care of their puppies and don't sell sick ones. I am an experienced dog owner and I know a sick dog when I see one. The employee was full of B.S. I was tempted to whip out my cell phone and start recording the conditions of the store, but the employee watched me like hawk after I questioned him about the sick puppy. It made me sick to my stomach to see the conditions of the store and to know that their puppies come from puppy mills. I am glad that I filed a report, but I know it can only do so much. read more

We just brought home an Australian Cattle Dog mix puppy from pet city and it was a very pleasant experience. The little one we bought was very well cared for and healthy. You could tell that she was well socialized and had been loved on during her time there. She was up to date on her vet visits and shots and even came with her next vet visit complementary of the store. The groomer was an hour late - excuse " shit happens". Took 4 hours to groom my dog and then did exactly what I asked her not to do. I asked that she leave my dogs ears fluffy on the outside and clean them out on the inside. She shaved the outside of his ears and didn't even touch the inside. Price went up $20 from the last visit. I stopped into Pet City recently to see the puppies. I had been there years ago and the conditions were deplorable. Nothing has changed, at all. The puppies are kept in glass window cages with wire grating on the floor with nothing to lay on. One poor little pup was curled up in a big water/food dish. The stench in this store is unbelievable. They sell mixed breeds, but call them designer breeds. Really, $500 for a mix breed? Please, please do not support this business. They are abusive towards their puppies and only care about making money. I can't convey how terrible the conditions are there. read more

It's been awhile since I've been in their Ypsi store, but it was pretty disgusting last time I was. The store was filthy, dimly lit, and smelled horrible. My family and I went there to possibly adopt a puggle. While there, we fell in love with what was claimed to be a "toy terrier mix." The worker said that the pup would remain small and grow to around 12lbs max. She quickly hit 5lbs, then 10, then 20, and finally topped out at 35lbs! I called the store wondering what the heck the deal was and was met with a healthy dose of skepticism. It wasn't until I showed up there in person with the dog that they finally believed me. They claimed that the breeder must have slipped her in with the rest of the litter. They offered to take her back and give me a full refund (this is after my daughter had fallen in love with her), and they finally agreed to a half refund when we told them we wanted to keep her. We eventually had to give the dog up after she bit my wife, my mother in law, and almost bit my neighbors daughter. All were unprovoked and the dog was never mistreated in any way. I'm convinced that the dog had emotional issues because she was taken from her mother too soon and sold. In a nutshell, I wouldn't trust them for another pet again. Ever. If they don't take the time to check out their breeders, there's no telling what you'll end up with. On a side note, they charge outrageous prices for "designer dogs." Essentially they charge anywhere from $500-$1200 for a glorified mutt. If you don't mind not getting a purebred dog, go to the humane society and take your chances there. It's a whole lot cheaper and you'll be saving a dogs life. read more

I stopped in here because my cat had an accident on my carpet, and I saw on the Nature's Miracle website that this store carried their cleaning products, and they were closer to home than any other store that did. I opened the door and was punched in the face with the terrible smell other reviews have described. Took about ten steps in and saw the conditions that the animals there were in and immediately walked out. I can't think of any situation where I'd be desperate enough for pet supplies that I would give this place a cent of my money. This was about a month ago, and it still bothers me knowing that this place exists. I guess ignorance was bliss, I didn't know there were any "designer puppy" stores in the area. If you're looking for a dog, I'd highly recommend any of the number of rescues in the area. I got my "designer breed" mutt from one, and I think he's pretty great myself. read more

I have experience with the Wyandotte Pet City Pets store and I can honestly say ALL the staff care very much for the animals. And to the person who reviewed this and said they are "almost positive" they come from puppy mills, let me just say this...I am 100 percent positive that they do not as I know the owner personally. They are from PRIVATE breeders/owners and are rescued animals that are vaccinated and cared for. The staff is always VERY Friendly and helpful. The animals are well taken care of. All the pups are rotated on the hour and come out of the cage to play. Their cages are disinfected and they are changed several times during the day. And this is a small business and it is very unlikely that they will have more than one person working at once that can clean the cages of the animals while simultaneously ringing up customers or stocking the shelves--so if it happen to be a tad smelly when you came in, try coming in at a different time next time. Yes, you can adopt an animal from the humane society and such, but a lot of people get declined because of stupid reasons like having an animal in the house that isn't fixed. So, people they want another animal and are willing to share love and affection for their animals are more than welcome to come to this store. They are competitive in their prices AND you'll be supporting a small business. read more

Got an 'Australian shepherd' from here 3.5 years ago. when we went into the store, as stated, it was very dirty and our puppy, was COVERED in dirt and mud. Said they were delivered in the back of a dirty pickup truck. We took him home and fell in love. realized pretty quickly he was mixed with another breed of dog (which was not mentioned.) He had behavior issues from the start and could not be socialized. We tried everything. Finally diagnosed with a chemical imbalance in his brain and had to be put down because of his sometimes extremely aggressive behavior. We have a baby on the way and couldnt take our chances. No one would take the dog and only spoke to us about putting him down as the only option. He only trusted us. We are STILL crying over this. He was an amazing dog but it is my belief they are breeding ill behaved dogs, not having information on the breeders, and SELLING these poor dogs at ridiculous costs. do NOT go here. adopt a dog or find a local breeder with information on the dogs parents. We are heartbroken and no one could fix or can bring our dog back. Don't make the same mistake as us and have to go through this pain.This place should be shut down. owner response : If we went through you 3 years later when we realized what a serious problem this WAS, are you saying you would have performed brain surgery? Had us buy all sorts of drugs for our dog hoping that would fix him? As I stated we exhausted all options. putting him down was the LAST thing we wanted to do. Its called freedom of speech and people should be warned that they should go directly through a breeder or an establishment that wouldn't put filthy terrified puppies in a cage. read more
