They had various birds, fish, axolotls, you can even hold the pets as long as you wash your hands. I wanted to see the bunnies but that time they didn't have any. Staff was great too. "My name is Earl" What does this have to do with a pet store? Read on. I'm a fan of the mom and pops as opposed to the big box or chain retail operations where possible. The big boys have their place but in many cases you can't beat the personalized and friendly service of the mom and pop. One such business is "The Pet Shop" in the Maui Mall. Since 1973, this little shop has been catering to the needs of Maui's pet population. They have separated themselves from their big brother counterparts by offering not only "standard" items but also unique pet items including a line of chew toys for dogs that I have never seen before. Like most of us who have family pet companions, whenever I go on a trip I like to buy an omiyage for the pooch. I was delighted to see that The Pet Shop had a fun lineup up of stuffed toys that made my purchase choice pretty easy. With a free rewards program sign up, the items can become even more of a bargain. The employees are very helpful, pretty knowledgable and friendly, very easy to talk to which is always appreciated. So it came to pass that the recent Maui trip produced a cool "zombie" toy for the pooch that has become a favorite chew and toss buddy for her. And the name of the chew toy? Almost as long as I have been alive, The Pet Shop has been providing the best product and customer service available to pet owners, and animal aficionados alike. Growing up on Maui, trips to the Maui Mall were never complete with out pausing to fawn over and covet the adorable kittens, bunnies, hamsters, and the like, that were displayed in their original store location windows. My very first cat was purchased here many years ago, the beginning of many special pets to come. At their new location, you will still find the same staff working hard to extend the very best customer service and kindness to all critters within. The longevity and loyalty of their staff is testament to excellent management and ownership. These people treat everyone like extended ohana (family.) And on a practical level, they carry top end products, with a delightful rebate system, after so many dollars spent, you are rewarded cash off future purchases, which we redeem often. I have to start off by saying that I absolutely miss their old location at Maui Mall. A sense of nostalgia floods my mind with wonderful memories of visiting the store when I was a child every time I pass by the windows. However, I am so glad the business found another suitable location to continue serving our community! Being this was my first time at the new location, I had no clue what to expect. I am very impressed with the size of the new location as well as the wide range of products they have to offer. I was in search of bird items and they CAME THROUGH! All sorts of toys made of various materials, food/drinking containers, treats, and more! I picked up a cage skirt (that I never knew existed but absolutely needed) which has done a miraculous job at keeping the wood shavings contained, as well as a few toys. Curious, I peeked around the rest of the store. They still have live fish and a few birds available. I was thrilled to see quality food products for both dogs and cats available, in addition to items for small pets (e.g., rabbits and guinea pigs). The 2 sales associates I worked with were very helpful and knowledgeable of the products they carry. I will definitely be coming back for more goodies for my birdies!! I was put off by this place for years because of higher prices and not-so-friendly staff. That changed today. I was helped by a very friendly & knowledgeable woman with my puppy food and their free in-house membership program. The prices are a little higher than the big box stores, but it feels great to support a local company and receive higher quality products. I'll definitely be back. read more

I've been a customer of The Pet Shop for at least three decades now (boy, I'm getting old when I refer to decades), starting at their Maui Mall location. Every trip to Maui Mall, I'd head to the Pet Shop to check out their small animals and especially fish. Since they've moved to their new location, I haven't visited as often but am still able to pick up fish, plants, or fish food when I need it. They have a nice selection of freshwater fish and plants but I wish they also carried saltwater fish. They also have small animals, such as guinea pigs, rabbits, and birds. read more

This is a wonderful pet store with a great selection of pet toys, pet foods, and supplies. They are run by a great set of people, seem very organized, have a decent amount of inventory and are very clean! There is no strange stench to the store unlike other pet stores I've been to. Some of their items do seem a little pricey, but definitely worth it when you are dealing with such a customer oriented staff. They are the most rude people especially when you call! Still ask you for your phone number and call you back and then they won't! They think the customers in the store are more important than you calling about to purchase $400 worth of stuff for your pet! So they just lost my business !! I called back and asked about cat food and they had plenty of time to talk about cat food but they wouldn't go check on my dog carrier size! They said they were too busy to do that! read more

Probably the best pet shop on the island. Great selection of pet foods and accessories. Best selection of small birds (Dan's Greenhouse has great large birds and pot belly pigs) and conveniently located close to the parking lot so carrying out big bags of dog food/cat litter is cake. They've got an online 'bulletin board' where people can post pets for sale, pets in need of a home, looking for pets... etc. I think this is a huge display of the level of community service these guys offer. This is the oldest pet store on Maui. The reason is they have a great selection of pet products of the highest quality. I've done business there for over 30 years and hopefully will be going there for the next 30. The staff are helpful and friendly. Yes there is the occasional part timer that needs some customer service lessons. But they are never bad enough for me to go elsewhere. I found the staff to be very rude. When I walked over to the counter, the girl (who looked to be in her teens/early 20's) was leaning on the counter laughing with someone (did not look like a customer, looked more like an aunty who stopped by to say 'Hi.' she didn't even buy anything, man) who gave me an annoyed looked. I asked if I could see the bunnies and was thinking of purchasing one, they just nodded and so I waited for an affirmative answer. They continued talking, and frustrated I interrupted and said, "Sooo, I'm just going to open the glass door, even though it says "PLEASE DO NOT OPEN, SEE STAFF..." All she said was "Ooookkkayyy" then rolled her eyes and continued talking. Oooookkkkaaayyy forget you lady...so I opened the door and little kids started gathering around and scolding me. "AY LADY IT SAYS DO NOT OPEN, DID YOU READ DA SIGN!" and "Did you ask to touch them??!??!" and "Do you work here?!" I ignored everyone because I was trying to find my purrfect match and was also still annoyed that no one had come over to help me. I played with the bunnies for a good 30 minutes before deciding that I definitely wanted one. I went back over to the register, the girl was now talking to another employee, both laughing loudly. When I told them I wanted to buy one of the bunnies they looked at each other, one walked off and said loudly in an angry-tita moke-tone, "I NOT GRABBING NO BUNNIES." When I asked the girl at the register for information on the care and keeping of bunnies she walked away and said she wasn't sure. SHE DID fetch me a short pamphlet on caring for bunnies but it wasn't enough information. I left to do my research... This was sadly the only place I could find bunnies on the island so after doing my research to ensure I knew what I was getting myself into, I went back and adopted my little friend. The women who helped me was very friendly and helped me find food and other little accessories for my bunnie. Overall, I like that they carry a lot of items at reasonable prices but I feel like the attitude of some of their employees need to change. They didn't seem to care that they had a job and I can see why a lot of businesses on this island fail or only last a short while. Petco was by far a lot better but only had chichillas :( ...Del's had very good customer service and they were able to answer some questions about caring for bunnies and stuff but had not pets. I took a fish in to sell on Sunday for consignment. On Monday I went in to possibly pick up a new tank and there was a sign on the tank saying today only $20. After seeing me the workers were on their headset talking and the sign was taken down. Two days later after thinking about it I wanted to talk to someone about it. My fish was sold for $160 less than agreed on. And the reason I was given was someone told her that I wanted to dump the fish in a pond. My information was there on the consignment sheet but I was not contacted about the drop in price. Poor work ethic. Her name is jasmine and she runs the fish department. Sad to say this isn't the first time I've seen her change the price on a consignment fish without consulting the other party. Everyone says to support local businesses. Don't order online, well why would I want to support a place that doesn't respect people in general. Thinking that they are above us. Everyone else there has been nice but I'd avoid jasmine. read more

This is a fabulous locally-owned family business that I encourage everyone to support. Although it is sad to no longer see them at Maui Mall, I must admit that it is actually easier and quicker to access their new store located next door to the ambulance station a little down the corner of Wakea and Alamaha or, depending upon where you're coming from, Hana Highway and Wakea. When we needed a Beta fish, there was no other place I wanted to go. And sure enough the staff set us up like a rock star. They selected a beautiful red Betta that, knock on wood, has been with us since May 2016. In August, I purchased a beautiful blue Betta with a red tinge for my 83 year old friend to thank her for fish-sitting our red Betta. Again, this fish is also thriving and energetic. The recommended Betta Buffet pellets as well as the Stress Coat which neutralizes the water and benefits their health have ensured their vitality. Furthermore, the Pet Shop staff are VERY helpful, professional and informative. I called the owner to confirm the correct amount of Betta Buffet to feed our fish, and it turns out I'd been overfeeding them! He also told me that Betta essentially have lungs and upon further research I learned from Wikipedia: "Bettas are anabantoids, which means they can breathe atmospheric air using a unique organ called the labyrinth. This accounts for their ability to thrive in low-oxygen water conditions that would kill most other fish, such as rice paddies, slow-moving streams, drainage ditches, and large puddles." If you have a young kid, a Betta makes the perfect first pet. Yes, you the parent will quickly assume 99.9% of the care and maintenance of any pet, but it is just nice to wake up each morning and see our fish swimming energetically in the bowl versus floating belly side up as is the case with so many fish in the big box pet stores.
