This store is hidden off the main part of the street where you have to walk down a hallway to find the door. You find yourself amazed by how many options there are to choose from. This place is great and has a huge selection, but it's kinda expensive and I always leave empty-handed. With the exception of some great pieces, there are other specimens that are a little too much for me and I know with some digging, you can find a better price for similar quality. The person who owns the store is extremely nice, though. I have to say, though, there were a couple times that I've wanted to come in during regular store hours, but couldn't because she was doing a reading for someone. I have recently started using crystals consistently and started visiting this shop for convenience, orginally, due to it literally being 100 steps from my home. I went to all of the crystal shops in OB, and found that the only one I could actually feel energy and a pull from was Philosopher's Stone. After several visits, I really started to admire Wendy for her knowledge and the information she provides, plus her powerful energy! Now, for the selection....by FAR the largest selection of crystals, every kind and in multiple forms. It is a beautiful shop and I have now acquired quite a collection. Every one of them has been powerful and I have not been disappointed yet! (My blue lace agate doesn't seem to like me much, but it helps my cat with anxiety, so I am happy). I visit weekly and always seem to be drawn to something. Luckily the prices are very reasonable. Since learning about Selenite, I have purchased multiple pieces, and have been sleeping soundly over the past month. I have been an insomniac for 23 years. Very calming. I lost the stone and recently contacted Wendy, the shop owner, to get a replacement. She provided me with photos of many different stones, suggestions, etc. and chatted with me extensively on Facebook until I was satisfied with my order. She shipped the items to me at home using a flat rate priority box and everything was well-packaged. I am very grateful that she went out of her way to help me from across the country and was willing to mail these items to me!! Wendy is genuine and helpful. While she has very beautiful, and sometimes pricey crystals, I do not feel like she is trying to "sell" things to me. Instead, I know that she is trying to help me to find what I am looking for, even if what I want is something that is relatively inexpensive. I will definitely purchase more from Wendy. Walking into The Philosopher's Stone is like walking into pure enchantment: copper walls, delicate and massive crystals, beautiful power jewelry and every kind of mineral imaginable. The proprietress, Wendy, is amazing. I was looking at selenite lamps when a customer came in asking for a "we love you but it's time to go home" stone, and Wendy immediately knew what mineral/crystal emits that vibe, offered a few variations on the theme. Wendy also teaches meditation classes. It is unlike any meditation I have ever done. It is not about trying to clear your mind of all thoughts, a task that is impossible by its very nature, but rather to find the quiet place in your head -- there is one! -- and you don't get there by trying not to focus on the mind. The unique collection enamors me every time I walk through the door . I learn so much when I look around here . This is the best crystal shop I've discovered in California. Wendy is so sweet and knowledgeable. She put each crystal in a baggie with a card describing the stone's properties. We had great conversation while she was wrapping everything up for me. She recognized the crystals almost instantaneously, and told me which ones couldn't be cleansed in water and which ones could be cleansed with smoke. This shop has such a great vibe, very welcoming! If you have any interest at all in gems, crystals, rocks, minerals, stones, ect... then you have NO reason not to visit the Philosopher's Stone. Wendy is extremely knowledgeable... as others have said... I come here often just to gaze at all the pieces, and I feel myself relax immensely. Sometimes a couple hours pass and I don't even realize it! As far as prices go ... I have nothing to compare it to because I have never really been to another crystal shop before. I'm below the poverty line, but I've managed to buy a couple pieces from her that mean a lot to me. Meh. If you look long enough, you'll find what's yours. (She will tell ya that too!) She also has a selection of jewelry. If you are into making your own jewelry, there's a store one block away on Newport that sells beads, wire, string, and all that stuff. So check both of these places out if you're into making jewelry. The smaller stones/crystals Wendy has are very inexpensive (like from $5-$15), so you can make some gorgeous custom jewelry of your own for probably less than $20. read more

Wendy has been nothing, but kind and helpful every time I come to the shop. I've asked her for help with gifts-- it's as simple as sharing the name of the person you're buying for, and she'll pick out the perfect stone for them. Her readings are incredibly accurate, and each time I've gone to the healing clinics she holds for her students to practice, a energetic weight is lifted off my shoulders. She has a vast collection of stones-- anything you're looking for, I'm sure she has it! I even bought my emerald engagement ring from her. I saw the ring design and loved it, but it was a herkamer diamond instead of an emerald (which I wanted)-- she had the wrapper make a new ring with emerald since he happened to be in town.
