Am sad I forgot to take photos!! Was in Pittsboro for a long weekend in July and stopped by Saturday and Sunday to get breakfast items for the friends I was visiting. Donuts, sweet rolls etc. All the sweet baked items were delicious and a huge hit with the family (and me!). Both days I got there after 11 AM and a lot of items were gone. Happened upon the Phoenix Bakery Market while visiting Pittsboro on a Saturday. I definitely wish we had stopped by here on our way into town instead of out of town, because many of their fresh made items were sold out. Our loss and their gain! In the pursuit for homemade bread, we stopped by and grabbed one of the last loaves of honey wheat bread they had. A fair price for such a great looking loaf. We hadn't tried it just yet, but judging by the rest of the items in store, it was going to be great. The shop is a neat mix of fresh baked items, beverages, some shirts for sale, and even more towards the back of the store. Need a gluten-free item? They've got that too! Their biscuits looked delectable, and if hadn't been for the fact we had just finished breakfast, those would have totally made their way into my belly. The store has a nice amount of seating, with enough tables for a group or a nice breakfast for two. The employees are kind and attentive. The store has a soothing vibe to it, like the kind of place you could hang out with friends and catch up over a great bagel. As soon as we arrived home, we sliced into the bread. It had a very subtle and delicious honey flavor and the wheat flavor wasn't overpowering. I look forward to using this bread for my littles lunches this week. This place was super cute inside, and their grill menu looked good. This is the first time I have walked into a bakery that didn't smell like baked goods... it smelled like oil on a griddle. I got a bunch of donuts and pastries for breakfast to go feed the family at home, and I don't usually like to say negative things, but the donuts were not very good. They were flat, and not light and airy, and the icing was very dense as well. The donuts seemed underdone. The filled donuts were better, but with a kind of gritty/sugar texture that coats your teeth. the lemon curd filling was the best lemon curd I have ever tried, though! The other pastries were also just not what I had expected after reading so many great reviews. The woman helping me seemed annoyed and it was the first time since moving here that I have experienced someone who wasn't smiling and friendly. Maybe she just wasn't having a great day, so I will give them another try! We LOVE supporting small, local businesses, and I hope it was just an off day. read more

Okay, so we live in Chapel Hill but had never heard of this place until my husband's grandmother, who lives in the mountains, told us about it. She's never been to Pittsboro so how did she know about it? A client at the company she works for brings doughnuts when he comes in from RALEIGH. He actually drives South to Pittsboro before driving all the way out to the mountains for these doughnuts in particular. We knew we had to try it. We stopped in around 9 on a Saturday morning and the place was already packed. The gravel parking lot is huge so there was plenty of space there. There are a few tables inside that were all taken, but we were able to find a seat at the small bar after ordering. We actually didn't realize they serve a full menu for breakfast and lunch! We tried the chorizo biscuit, a plain bagel with cream cheese, and an assortment of doughnuts. Chorizo biscuit: The biscuit was just perfect, which is sadly hard to find even around NC these days. It was tender and buttery and held together as a sandwich without being hard. Clearly handmade with a lot of care. The chorizo was crumbled and cooked into the egg. I'll admit the amount of chorizo was a bit scant. This sandwich was also topped with absolutely delicious, fresh pico de gallo and a bit of guacamole. Overall a tasty and filling sandwich! Bagel: Homemade bagel was good but I wasn't blown away by it. I will try another flavor next time as they have so many choices. The raspberry-lemon-mascarpone-cream cheese, though, delicious! Very, very lemony with a distinct creaminess and light cheesy flavor from the mascarpone. This was a unique spread that I will definitely try again. They have lots of flavors of spreads to go along with their many bagels. Doughnuts: We bought 7-8 to try and also bring to Granny. We sampled the coconut cream and boston creme flavors. DELICIOUS. These doughnuts were so unique and like none I've had anywhere else. They're soft and tender, and the fillings and toppings were sweet and flavorful. The coconut was my absolute favorite. There was a huge assortment of pastries and we wanted to try them all. Everything from doughnut bars, cinnamon rolls, and apple fritters for breakfast to miniature upside-down cakes and cupcakes for dessert. They also have gorgeous decorated cakes displayed throughout the bakery, including very reasonably priced wedding cakes in a case at the back. I told my husband on the way out, "The next time we need a cake for a party/baby shower/graduation... we're coming here!" We're already planning our next trip to Phoenix for breakfast, pastries, and especially DOUGHNUTS! read more

Found this place by accident on my way to Atlanta (thank you Waze) and omg it was incredible. I walked in and the smell of delicious freshly baked goods blew me away. I went in just for a coffee and my fat face left with a box full of fresh donuts, scones, a pineapple upside cake and the best bacon egg and cheese biscuit. By faaaaaar the best bakery/coffee shop I've ever been to. What I also loved about it was that the majority of people coming in and out were all locals (no choche hipsters :) ). There was this old guy at the coffee bar and you knew he was probably there everyday. I've been telling everyone and their mom about it and I'll be back for sure. read more

Positives- Excellent customer service, delicious bread, molasses cookies (as good as in the Amish country), bagels (not like NY but delicious all the same), and spectacular cream cheese. Negatives- cakes and cupcakes too sweet and buttercream is a little off from NY consistency and taste. Limited and pricey menu and payment is a little wonky. Every time I'm in the neighborhood I visit. I love their Boston cream doughnut. Their doughnuts are not atypical. They are a cross between a bengiet and doughnut. They also have great cinnamon rolls and twists. I also get their raspberry and blueberry cheese cake and recommend the chocolate triffle. Some of the finest baked items from one of the best bakeries in the Triangle. Everything from cupcakes, full sized cakes to muffins, breads, cookies and bagels. They also have a small selection of breakfast items in the mornings (egg sandwiches, breakfast burritos, etc). If coming for the baked goods, be aware that they frequently have a limited selection by early afternoon on weekends and even more so prior to the holidays. The only downside which is easily overcome - the coffee. Avoid the coffee...consistently has a burnt taste, even the lighter roasts. I got a cake and cake topper here for my wife's birthday trip. I kept it refrigerated most of the time and put it out a little too late for it to get unthawed but it was super delicious. The staff here are rude. They seem only interested in getting the place closed on time. The only thing that keeps them going is no competition in the area and overall good products. I've been a customer for years since they started in their tiny first location on Hillsboro Street. Over the years I have seen a steady decrease in friendliness and customer service. It's all about "its time to close" attitude! Recently I made one final attempt to support this local business hoping for a better experience. I collected my sandwich to go and when I got in my car, I realized the sandwich had items on it that I was not expecting. I called back into the restaurant and when the staff person answered, I asked "what is supposed to be on this sandwich?" Her response, "We are getting ready to close." Unreal. Did not ask me what was wrong, nor did she offer me to come back into the restaurant, just "we are getting ready to close." So SAD!! This used to be a great place and now it's all about "we are getting ready to close." One day that might be permanently closed if they do not step up and improve customer service. More businesses are coming to Pittsboro, and it will be good for them to have some competition. They have developed the attitude that they are doing you a favor to make you a sandwich and charge $15 for that sandwich! read more

First, a disclaimer, I've actually never been to The Phoenix Bakery. My brother and sister in law live in Pittsboro and they were having a really very terrible week and we needed to send them some sugar, so I had pastries from The Phoenix Bakery delivered to their house. Mr. MVP and I have not eaten sugar or gluten in seven long, sad months. I called The Phoenix Bakery (TPB) and asked if they could do me a huge favor and deliver, which I know is not something they normally do not do. I offered a gigantic tip and of course I offered to pay extra. I was told they could not deliver. Now, I live in a small town and I know if were to call the local bakery and ask if they could deliver to my sibling because I live 900 miles away they would not hesitate - but I suppose every business has their own rules. I still am giving them 5 stars because TPB does not advertise anything about delivery and the people I dealt with on the phone were very nice. I ordered on Friday afternoon and I arranged for a delivery service to pick everything up on Saturday morning. I confirmed with TPB that the pastries I selected would be Saturday morning fresh and not Friday afternoon leftovers. They assured me. I picked from the selection on their website and because I know my brother loves boston creme donuts and my sister in law cinnamon rolls, I figured I had everyone covered. As I was told most all ingredients were locally sourced and everything was baked fresh, I really could not go wrong. Fourteen pastries filled two large boxes and cost around $40, so these are not your grandparents donuts. I was happy to pay. My brother and sister in law apparently love TPB and they pick up treats there in the afternoon when one or the other of them has had a hard day to surprise each other - something I did not know. My brother was especially glad to receive the pastries as he is a sugar fiend and gladly soothed his soul on donuts all Saturday. So, if you live in Michigan and need pastries delivered to your sad siblings in North Carolina, TPB is super tasty, but they do not deliver. If, however, you actually live in Pittsboro, I would stop in and try their boston creme because my brother told me they are pretty damn good. read more

For my son's 4th birthday, I had pre-ordered a custom dinosaur cake from a bakery nearby. Five days before the party, they cancelled my order because of a potential covid exposure. I was left in the lurch and thought I would have to settle for a grocery store sheet cake. All of the bakeries I called were booked. A family member called Phoenix to see if they would be able to provide the cake. Not only were they able to provide a three-layered chocolate mousse cake for 30 people on very short notice, they customized it with my son's name and made it a dinosaur theme.
