Definitely an underrated Durham bakery! We got the plain croissant (huge & perfectly flaky) & cardamom monkey bread (loved this! cardamom was not overwhelming & perfect amount of sweetness with the icing; also huge & fluffy). I also got Greg's Latte, which is a rose syrup based latte; it was so good!! Lots of parking upfront. Fast service, great ambiance with limited indoor & lots of outdoor seating. My husband and my favorite coffee shop in North Carolina. And we go out for coffee quite a bit! The vibes are just so fun here. If I have an in-person meeting, I often ask my meeting mate to join me here so I can introduce them to the lovely atmosphere. We sit either indoors (they have a really nice space, and if you can get the little ante room facing the road, it's super fun!) or we sit outside on the large patio area which is adorned with lots of lovely plants (courtesy of the plant shop next door!) It's a small business and the owners are always coming up with fun latte flavors. My husband loved the vegan eggnog latte. I love that they don't blink if I ask them to make my latte a specific way (I asked recently for less sugar from the syrup and the cool barista said "half sweet, no problem!") I'm not sure if we like the perfectly made lattes more, or the vegan pastries (it might be a tie?) They have killer vegan croissants. read more

TLDR: Great place for a coffee and large croissant. If you are craving an extra large croissant this is the place to go. I stopped here for caffeine and a snack while in Durham. They are located in a small plaza with ample parking right out front. Baked goods are displayed at the front counter. Order and pick-up is on the left side of the counter. After ordering, I received the croissants right away and the earl grey tea a few minutes later. Since it was warm out, I ordered a hot tea with a side of ice. I was informed that the tea was only steeped for about a minute. After leaving, I continued to let it steep. Even after steeping, the tea was very weak and cool (I didn't even need the ice). I think the water was not hot enough to properly steep. The croissants were delicious. Very flaky and satisfying. The chocolate croissant had a good balance of pastry to filling ratio. Overall good experience, I would not recommend the tea, but I do recommend the croissants! read more

The muffins are really good! Make sure if you're getting coffee or hot cocoa to ask for the temperature to be a little less hot. This is a small cart with bread, espresso drinks, cold brew coffee, and French pastries - both traditional and vegan. We learned about this place from the list of participating businesses on the Shop Durham card website. Their flour is locally sources and they pride themselves on having a vegan counter part for most of their offerings. We got a loaf of sourdough, a vegan cream cheese and berry pastry, a non-vegan jalapeno popper pastry with bacon, and an enormous carrot cake cinnamon roll. For beverages, we both got the rose cardamom latte - my sister got cow milk and I got soy milk. The pastries were sensational. I love anything with puff pastry and it was such a treat to also have vegan cream cheese in there as well because I love cheese pastries and rarely see vegan ones. The pastry was thin and flaky and perfectly golden. Some commercial products and "accidentally vegan" frozen puff pastry will leave that grainy film on the roof of your mouth but these items are lovingly made by hand and nothing but pure deliciousness. The cinnamon roll could serve a family of four. It has shredded carrot, a few raisins, some walnuts, and was drizzled with icing. Sundays and Wednesdays they're at Northgate Park, 8am to Noon. You can also find "a variety of our pastries within coffee shops and grocery stores throughout the Durham, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro area," according to their website, but the locations are not listed. I went in today and honestly the atmosphere was incredibly tense when I visited this establishment. The owners talked poorly about employees the entire time I was in line to other customers which in my opinion is inappropriate. The coffee was good and so was the bread but honestly for the owners themselves they're incredibly self centered people and shouldn't be speaking poorly about employees like this. There's just something about great coffee and bake shops where the best ones have obscure hours. Only open 3 days a week I am always trying to do at least once every week or two when the hours align! We did not have a good customer service experience when we entered the store. The young man at the register was extremely dry and unfriendly. He and his female coworker were snickering and whispering to one another when we entered and while we were ordering. There was a lot of side eyeing each other and condescending facial expressions going on. Don't think we'll be back but I'm glad others have had better experiences. Love having a coffee and bakeshop in the neighborhood, their hours could be a bit better. Whisk and Rye has been open for a little bit at their physical location off University Drive in Durham. They've got a selection of espresso drinks and coffee and various baked goods. Their baked goods skew more towards pastries and croissants and they're sizable ones at that. Upon our last visit we had walked over in the snow and made sure to grab some extra goodies for the day in case we weren't able to get out. We got a few croissants, a berry and cream cheese one, an everything bagel and cream cheese one and a chocolate croissant. Each one was fantastic and a hefty portion too. Our lattes were excellent as well. My only real room for improvement is that this location is only open half the week at their physical location and it would be great if they had more consistent hours. It looks like Yelp has two listings for Whisk & Rye, one for their mobile shop at Northgate Park and this one for their new brick-and-mortar location on university drive. We've been there twice now and ordered coffee and delicious pastry items like a chocolate croissant, ham and cheese croissant, Mexican bezos cookie, sweet potato roll, bacon and chive scone, and a gingerbread cinnamon roll. OMG, all of them were delicious! The croissants are especially flakey (so don't eat them around your keyboard). The owners/bakers are incredibly talented and welcoming to all. This isn't the closest bakeshop or coffee shop to us, but we definitely will be coming back. PS, keep an eye on their hours since they're only open at this location a few days a week. This is a new bakery and coffee shop and I have been there multiple times now. They have a cute outside patio and some seating inside right now. There are dog friendly and I've been able to sit in the patio with my dog and also take him inside when ordering. Coffees : they have great lattes! My favourite would have to be the rosemary agave latte (which has the perfect light sweet to herby flavours) and their abuelita mocha. Pastries : I feel like they rotate their flavors often! Their croissants are beautifully large and great lamination! My fave is probably the everything cream cheese croissant. Their scones are also not to miss. Delicious flavors and quite filling! Outdoor seating overlooks a parking lot but it is small and quiet considering it is off a main road. Didn't see obvious signs so is easy to miss, unless you look for that outdoor seating. Only had the croissant - it is extra large! Flaky, great color, just enough butter, fresh. (Staff said they sell if it is just a day old - so you might ask if you care.) Whisk and Rye is one of a kind. I'm a weird coffee shop goer. I don't drink a whole lot of coffee and I'm super dumb about it, so I'm always nervous about going into a shop and not knowing the difference between a latte, a cortado, an espresso, and an Americano (or whatever). Usually baristas give off the air that they are going to roll their eyes at me if I ask too many questions, but I could tell upon walking in to Whisk and Rye that this was the place where all my dumb questions would be answered. The woman behind the counter took her time describing, in detail, the difference between all the drinks, and helped me choose. That's not all, though: - Their baked goods are amazing, and unique. Today I had a pepper scone with vegan cheese, and I've seen ginger cookies, red velvet cookies, carrot cake cinnamon rolls, and french onion soup croissants on offer (in addition to standards like ham and cheese croissants, chocolate chip cookies, etc) - Their specialty flavored drinks are not too sweet. If you know, you know - this is practically impossible to find. I shy away from ordering coffee with any flavor because 99% it's going to taste like a hazelnut vanilla K-cup threw up into it, but today's rosemary agave latte was barely sweet (and very rosemary-y!) - Vegan options. Not just the alternative milks, but in the baked goods too. I'm not vegan, but try to lean that way when possible, and it's easy here without feeling like all you can order is that one sad floppy muffin in the corner. - All this, and they are NOT EXPENSIVE! Everything I have described probably sounds like drinks and baked goods are going to cost $6+ each. They don't. The coffee drinks are between $2 and $4.50 and the baked goods the same. I am definitely drinking more coffee than usual lately just so I can patronize Whisk and Rye. read more

I've been to Whisk and Rye Bakehouse a total of two times (so far). I have really enjoyed what I have ordered thus far which is a latte and a pastry. They have various lattes and pastries that change (IDK how often they change but they have been different the two times I have been). On my most recent visit, I went with their special Latte (sea salt and chocolate) . The latte was great. I also ordered a cinnamon bun which was very big and delicious and wasn't overloaded with sugar. I will continue to patronize Whisk and Rye Bakehouse when I can and I really hope they can continue to make it during these trying times for restaurants, This really is a cool Durham local bakery! read more

I stumbled upon this bakery while exploring the area. I saw a bunch of cars in the parking lot and thought, "something fun must be happening there, let me turn in to check it out." I did not realize that there was a little bakery and cafe in the inconspicuous grey buildings. When I first entered, I was greeted by friendly baristas and the warm comforting smell of fresh baked goods. In the wall that separates the baking area from the sitting area there are Whisk and Rye merchandise, but also goods such as hand made mugs, cards, and photo prints for sale that are from local artists. In the baked goods display, I saw large (bigger than Costco's, if you can imagine that) croissants and didn't realize that they weren't your regular run of the mill croissants until I took a closer look. There were pastrami croissants, Cuban croissants, butter croissants, butter croissants filled with cream cheese, scones, cookies, vanilla cinnamon twists, and gluten free muffins. The pastrami croissant is not your regular butter croissant that is cut open and pastrami and sauerkraut placed inside. The pastrami and sauerkraut were baked inside of the croissant! Same with the Cuban, the ham and cheese (and pickles) were already inside of the croissant when it was baked so the flavor gets into the croissant, but still maintains the flaky, buttery goodness of a regular croissant. My favorite between the two croissants is the pastrami and sauerkraut. You get a nice sized serving of sauerkraut inside with mustard and pastrami. Now, I'm not a fan of mustard, never ever liked it in my food... until this croissant came along. I was unsure if I would enjoy the croissant because I don't like mustard, but this changed my mind. I can now say, I like mustard... in the pastrami and sauerkraut croissant made by Whisk and Rye. When you get the croissants home, pop them in the toaster oven for a bit to warm them up and get them even more crispy. I promise, it is worth the extra time. I ordered their banana cold brew with soy and this cold brew tastes like one of my favorite cold brews from Mostra (a third wave coffee roaster in San Diego that I had been frequenting since shortly after they opened in 2013) called choconana. It tasted like a coffee flavored chocolate covered banana. I also ordered their orange vanilla cold brew and it tasted exactly like a coffee flavored holiday chocolate orange (the kind that you hit against the table and it splits into slices). I really liked them both, but the banana cold brew won out (I'm 100% sure it's because it reminded me of home). I hope Whisk and Rye keeps their banana cold brew and the orange vanilla cold brew year round. They are delicious, especially on warmer days, but I drink cold coffee drinks year round. Tip for new comers to Whisk and Rye (so you don't get lost in the shuffle), enter in the right door that leads you to the pastry counter, once you know what you want, walk to the left past the refrigerated display (on top of the refrigerated display is where the board with the specials are listed) to where the register is, and to the left of the register is where you pick up your order. This is the way the line forms as well. Overall, I highly recommend this place for a unique savory brunch/lunch croissant and delicious cold brews. read more
