Let me start out by saying the chicken fried steak here was hands down the best I've ever eaten. It wasn't the frozen stuff restaurants usually serve. This was fresh and throughly tenderized. It was so tender no knife was needed. The breading was panko. It was truly divine. Mark got the Idaho trout and eggs and wasn't disappointed. But he liked my breakfast better. I believe our server was their son and he was a sweetheart. Super clean and what I really liked not overly decorated. Truly felt like your in own dining room. When I came here I was told they were out of some things and there were no desserts available. No big deal. I got fish and chips, I'm pretty sure the fish is frozen, but it was still pretty tasty. I had a side of funeral potatoes. Delicious. It comes with two sides, but I wasn't very hungry so I had told my server I only wanted one side . I got fresh squeezed lemonade and really hit the spot after a long day of driving. I also got one roll and I was given a squeeze bottle of blackberry jam. Normally for dinner, I probably would've passed on the blackberry jam even though blackberries are one of my favorite fruits and I love blackberry jam and I'm so glad I did not pass. I'm trying this. Oh my God, blackberry jam is the best I've ever had and I should've asked if I could buy some! I don't know if they sell it or not but it's delicious. And since they didn't have dessert, I asked for another roll. I think I got charged for the extra roll. I really didn't look at my check too hard. My check was less than $18 altogether which I think is a very fair price. I was happy to pay that. My server was extremely sweet, and she almost seemed embarrassed. I have to say they were out of things which I get. But she was very attentive. My visit was on 8/31/24. It was a Saturday night and I walked in and there were a few tables that were sat and they got up and then another wave of customers came in. This is a real gem right off of I-15. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with friendly, prompt service that made us feel right at home. The food was absolutely delicious--it tasted like a home-cooked meal with flavor you won't find at a chain restaurant. Ok, The Pines is a little dive located at 148 E. 50 S. Street, Malad City , Idaho. It is in a building that is shared with another business and has a very small parking lot with probably twelve parking spaces. It is a smaller restaurant with seating for about 40 people. The restaurants decor was in need of some upgrades and had some wear, but overall it was clean and presented pretty well. There were "NO" worries about if it was sanitary or not, cleanliness, dirty tables , clean or unsanitary service items and dirty restrooms. All was at or above standards and well kept. Yes the restrooms were clean and well stocked. Service was "Wait To Be Seated" and that service was very quick. We were seated quickly and it was at a clean and presentable two top table. We found out that it is a family run business and there was a Father, Mother and Son working there, and not sure how many others, but we met them all that were working at the time.. The son was our server and was a little nervous about his job, not so sure how long he had been doing it, but he was uncomfortable and unsure of himself or at least he presented himself that way. He introduced himself to us and really tried to show the restaurant off as a great place, he may have really over did it, but it was fine and a little humorous at that. Sort of reminded me of my first day as a server. He took our drink order, got us our drinks and then left us. We were ready to order, but that was ok. It gave me time to check the place out a little better and check out the restrooms. He came back and asked if we were ready to order, and we ordered our meals. We asked a few questions about the meal and what we ordered and he was not sure on a few of our questions and had to go ask someone else for the answer. It was ok, because I would rather get the question answered correctly than wrong. I ordered a bowl of soup to go with my meal and asked if my soup and my partners salad could come out before the main course or entrée. He said yes. The soup and salad came out about 1 minute before the main course or entrée did. Again, we worked through it. I ordered their Mushroom Soup and a Chicken Teriyaki plate. The soup was very well prepared but seemed to be in a cup and not a bowl. If that soup I got was a bowl, their cup may be a large ramekin. The Teriyaki Chicken was well plated and looked great for a smaller dive restaurant, so I was impressed. The vegetables were even steamed to perfection, the chicken cooked well and juicy and the rice was also perfectly cooked. My partner had a hamburger that was cooked and prepared with care and looked great. I was surprised that they built the burger with all the ingredients and toppings and served it closed, as well as being in Idaho, Famous for Potatoes, and the fries were quite as impressive as you would we would have expected, but they were cook to perfection and not greasy. I did have one issue with the service, my pet peeve, I had to keep asking for refills and when I got them , no more ice was added and so the drink was warm. Over all the experience at The Pines was a good experience and I would give the Service a 7 out of 10, the Food I would give a 8 out of 10 and the Server would get a solid 7 out of 10, but I think he will get better, and as for the Cook and Other Help I would give them a 8 out of 10. Overall The Pines here in Malad, Idaho would get a positive response from me and a recommendation for all to try. The Owners, Family and Staff were very Helpful, Professional Service Oriented and seem that they will excel and make this place a successful business. 4 1/2 Star Review. Okay - for a small, out-of-the-way town, this place is BOMB! I'm a bit of a food snob, and fully expected processed, out of a can, from the Sysco truck greasy diner food. It was anything BUT! The burger was fresh (no disgusting frozen patties here!), and the bacon too - no processed strips. Even the lettuce was fresh, NOT out of a bag. The service was delightful too! This is a great little family owned restaurant. I had the dragon burger with a side of deep fried Brussel sprouts. My husband had the Rise and Shine with the ribbon fries (can't remember the name) Both were great! The burgers are made with fresh hamburger and the buns are brioche. Really good! Our waiter was part of the family and was outgoing and friendly. Right off I-15 in Malad so perfect for a rest stop on your travels. The meatloaf loaded with flavor, onions, coated in a thick layer of ketchup, hidden by gravy. One of the best meatloaves we have had out. The mashed potatoes, gravy, and carrots were all delicious. The chicken strips were fresh and breaded. Not from a box. The burgers are just as yummy. Everyone loved their meals. The perfect homemade lemonade to wash it down! Best place to eat in Malad. A classic American diner just off the Main Street in Malad. We stopped here for a bite on our way home from Yellowstone and look forward to our next trip so we can enjoy The Pines again! Service was delightful and the restaurant was clean. They have an assortment of Pepsi products as well as various teas and coffee. They have an awesome kids menu that delighted my seven-year-old. The adult menu is equally amazing! My husband got their Facebook special and I got the Cali Burger. They cooked my burger to perfection and did not skimp on the avocado! Excellent food! I had the homemade meatloaf (it had a touch of sweetness in it really good), homemade gravy and mashed potatoes. My husband had a Tuscan chicken sandwich with artichoke aïoli and spinach on a ciabatta bun. Chicken was very tender. Side salads for both. All was very tasty! The place was packed! We couldn't believe how busy they were (but the service was friendly and fast). I don't think Malad is a very big town, but everybody seems to like the Pines, and I can certainly see why! And it's not expensive ($30 for 2 people, generous serving sizes). read more

Each time I go to visit my grandparents in Rexburg, I stop at a new restaurant in Malad. This time I accidentally arrived at a Mexican restaurant and then realized I had already ate there, so decided to run and grab some BBQ for a quick bite. The BBQ place was closed, so I ended up here. I've officially run out of quick food in Malad. I'll need to plan extra time for the drive now that I've only got sit down places left. The Pines is great. A classic small town restaurant with a large menu and variety of food. I went with the Dragon Burger and funeral potatoes. My wife went with chicken fried steak and "frips". Frips are those spirally cut potatoes you have at something like a state fair. Funeral potatoes are a classic Utah/Idaho church dish. If you haven't had them, they are worth a try. We were lucky and got the last portion of them for the night. The Dragon Burger was good. Cream cheese, bacon, jalapenos, and jalapeno ranch. The funeral potatoes were the highlight of the meal, and the frips were pretty good too. They have Pepsi products. The service was good and they had changing tables and a high chair which is always nice when you're travelling with a baby. I would say that I will come back here again, but the journey must go on and I need to finish eating at every restaurant in Malad. read more

We were searching for a watering hole on the long road back from Yellowstone to California. A place to rest, for our 1 year old to stretch his legs and walk around and to fill our bellies with some Southern Idaho home style comfort food. The Pines did not disappoint these weary and worn travelers. At the time of this review, dine in was allowed with social distancing and sanitation practices between customers. The driveway to the restaurant is easy to miss but it is on the side street and parking is ample. Immediately upon entry we were greeted warmly by different members of the owner's family and we felt a warm feeling like we had entered their kitchen for dinnertime. When life hands you lemons... make the best tasting, richest in flavor, homemade lemonade of your life! My son just couldn't stop drinking it and was excited to hear that the lemonade was bottomless and he took some to go. I ordered the BLTA Melt, where the sourdough was slightly grilled to perfection and the Cheddar and American cheese blend was deliciously melting through the layers of bacon avocado and lettuce. The sandwich was permeating with flavor. But the frips (a fry-chip hybrid) were so good I almost didn't even taste the sandwich at first. Our server let us have some dipping sauces of fry sauce and their own specialty made Smokey Ranch sauce, which took our tastebuds straight to heaven. My wife loved their Greek Burger, although the gyro meat was sold out due to the Memorial Day weekend rush. We were able to substitute bacon and avocado for the gyro meat without losing the Greek flavor. A special mention must be made about the way they catered to our son. He got a taste of the mushroom soup before our meal was prepared so he could decide if he wanted a full order and he loved it and then he got a kiddie cup to go for the lemonade. Parents know that it is a blessing to have this service for kids at restaurants that don't have the same patience that adults do. The Pines is a landmark that will be forever on our road trips on the I-15 and we can't wait to eat here again. read more

It's their customer service I really appreciate, including their meticulous attention to enhanced (COVID) cleaning guidelines. I visited with family members, including a relative who has several dietary sensitivities. Normally, this person will order a safe menu item, but sometimes they'll order something problematic without disclosing potential issues to the server. Our visit was one of those times. Of course this happened during a busy dinner shift! Our server was calm and collected about redoing my relative's order. Her very kind response helped an awkward (and avoidable) moment feel a bit less uncomfortable. read more

Wow! Just actually stopped for fuel saw this place down the road. Figured it's lunch time...why not! It was definitely a great choice the food basically home cooked style. I had the turkey melt and yes it was delicious. " in fact if they had told me they had just slaughtered the turkey out back I would have believed them it was that fresh". Sweet potato fries tasted as if they were just picked in the backyard garden cut fried up and served. The lemonade lest we forget. It's fresh squeezed let me reiterate that fresh squeezed. I asked if they had their own lemon tree ‍ unfortunately ID weather doesn't allow to grow their own lemons ok buy them at the store!! It's still fantastic. I've always been a fan of burgers, I feel like everybody likes a good classic hamburger. This place will forever be my go to when I want a burger! They have your classic hamburgers, but then they have some of the most unique hamburgers that literally taste like heaven in your mouth. I definitely recommend going and getting the dragon burger! It's both mine and my husband's favorite. The people who work there are so nice and so accommodating and you definitely get the relaxing restaurant in the woods vibes. read more

Great little diner with inexpensive high quality food! Nearly all is homemade The best Rueben sandwich in all small towns I've ever tasted! And great burgers! A big choice of potato sides (it is Idaho so...) I wanted to try the Idaho trout but they were out but had the delicious hand-breaded shrimp... it really was very good which makes me think the trout has to be fantastic.
