Psst! It's Portuguese BBQ. This is not the same as southern BBQ but with these tips you can eat a great meal. Pork ribs are definitely a favorite! Fun for whole family. The black beans over seasoned yellow rice can tame a big appetite as a side and compliments ribs well. Even my toddler approves! Four and a half stars easy!!! Beef ribs are tasty, but not nearly as perfected as their pork ribs and earn an easy four stars! Rotisserie chicken is good! Plenty of finger lickin' for a four star rating! Garlic chicken you can pass on. I've had better chicken at well...uh..McDonalds. Tastes like chicken boiled in water, colored orange with some minced garlic in a jar sprinkled on top and slapped in a plastic container. Had no taste and was downright disgusting. Was extremely disappointed to say the least. (For those TV lovers, If Chef Ramsey ate this garlic chicken he would rip this place apart for sure with a bunch of bloody things to say and have bleeped out. So steer clear of the garlic chicken!!!) As far as Portuguese BBQ food goes this place was extremely underwhelming. The BBQ Chicken with fries and rice was good but nothing special. The portion sizes aren't great either. I tried the Picadinho (Pork Cubes) and it was really substandard. I can't think of any other Portuguese BBQ places locally but if you're willing to take the 15 minutes drive you can find much better in East Newark, Kearny, Ironbound section of Newark. read more

Ordered delivery - a pulled pork sandwich and half rack of pork ribs and two beef empanadas - they were so friendly on the phone, the food arrived in no time, and the portions were huge! What more could you ask for? My only criticism: no sauce on the ribs. That isn't necessarily my complaint- its more about the sauce packets that they sent with the food... I've been coming to The Pit for over a year now and I have yet to be disappointed. Please note, Portuguese BBQ and Southern BBQ are two very different things. Finally tried the Pit, the good far out ways the not so good. First off I had it delivered, it arrived very fast, I thought we'd be waiting at least another 30 minutes. The Pork Ribs were amazing, the Chicken was also Amazing, as were the fries and the rice. The Beef on the other had was a bit dry even though we ordered it Medium, it was tough, and not much of the meet was edible. we also ordered the Empanadas, tried the Cheese one, it was great, to full to try the chicken one at this point, but I'm betting it will be great as well. read more

I have worked in Newark for 15 years so I'm no stranger to Portuguese BBQ places. While I still believe the best representations of this style BBQ are found in Newark, The Pit in Bloomfield is not far behind. I had the traditional BBQ chicken with rice and fries. The meat was seasoned and cooked perfectly and the rice was exactly what is to be expected. The fries were a little thicker and soggier than the places I'm used to in Newark but still tasty. My take out order came with hot sauce and BBQ sauce. My only gripe was the BBQ sauce. I believe most Portuguese BBQ places use a sweeter sauce that you can actually buy at a grocery store. The sauce is called Open Pit. In my opinion this is much tastier than the traditional BBQ sauce that was offered here. Luckily I had some Open Pit in the fridge at home. But other than that this will be my go to take out BBQ spot from now on in the 'burbs. read more

The Pit is a wonderful, quaint Portuguese barbecue style restaurant that is extremely well managed. Both of the owners have wonderful people skills and make every customer feel at home. The cooks are very friendly and the remaining staff consists mainly of very pretty female cashiers (aside from the delivery guys). The go-to meal of choice has to be the beef ribs. They are amazing. Based upon the wide difference in Yelp reviews, I am assuming that this place is a hit or miss. Based upon the good ones that I read here, I gave this place 2 chances. Both were take-out. First time, we ordered tons of food for a football party. The second time, I was more careful and ordered one serving. Let me tell you that my buddies and I were pretty disappointed. Every meat was dry and had no flavor. We actually ended up throwing away a lot of it. Yes, you read that correctly. We actually threw it away. We didn't save it so we could make sandwiches or somehow eat it later with tons of sauce and rice. Nope. It went into the garbage because it was too dry. It was truly a disappointing because I'm a guy who gets excited about his meat, especially while watching a game. I would suggest that if you want to try this place, order something small and see how it turns out. I have a feeling that the food output is simply up and down. You might get a good day but then you might not. But, this is the way I see it. Why would you want to take a chance with your hard earned money? I've dealt with the owner personally of the Pit for a large catering order. And we were taken care of very well. We got a "good" deal since we're a non-profit, but honestly I have establishments that do better for us in pricing and portions. They don't deliver for free which is unusual with all the businesses that do cater to us all the time. The food, in my opinion is okay. Nothing out of this world. But all my people LOVED it! I was doing a random "I want something delivered, but not sure what I want" search when I came across this place on Yelp. After reading the reviews I was a bit concerned by the one from Nicole L. I'm glad I decided to try them anyway. I called in my order and the girl taking my order was very friendly and attentive to my order (not like some places I've called and they're constantly distracted by customers in person) Approximately 20 minutes later, my Pork Ribs and order of chicken fingers for my daughter arrived. Still steaming hot! I actually had to let it cool a bit. The portions are HUGE! I made the mistake of ordering the Full order instead of the half... Could have fed 3 people with that platter. The food was great, meat basically falling off the bone. Ample amount of fries/rice to go with it. I was at The Pit twice and I'll never go back. I heard that The Pit had the best chicken and rice around so I stopped by and ordered the chicken and rib combo. The ribs were OK, the chicken was very very dry. The rice with bean sauce wasn't that good at all. I thought I hit this place on one of there bad nights, so I waited a few weeks and went back again. There wasn't any change from the first time I was there. I should have listened to my taste buds and saved my money the second time around. I am not one to complain or write reviews but people need to know that it is not safe to eat food from here. 5 out of 5 of the people I ordered with all got violently sick immediately after consuming the food from the pit. When I told the manager, Elie, he actually had the nerve to argue with me about it and told me that it wasn't possible and was probably the "water I drank".
