Four of us visited for Sunday brunch and everything we tasted was a home run. The comfy menu is great! Biscuits, cheese grits, great breakfast potatoes. Eggs benedict, chicken and a waffle, shrimp and grits. Everything was super tasty and nicely priced. Jittery Joe's coffee....and two great brunch cocktails were offered. The Place has a fun and buzzing vibe. Front of house seemed organized and warm. If the quality from the kitchen stays consistent, this restaurant will be a big success. read more

This was our first time at The Place. It was my wife's 75th birthday and we wanted something classy. We were not disappointed. Ben, who waited on us, was polite and professional. The food was really great - the bruschetta starter was sublime - I'm not usually a fan of pimento, but the spread had just the right taste and spice to it. Jude had the steak, I had the shrimp burger. She loved the brussel sprouts, and the onion ring side on my plate was heaven. We even ordered a couple more starters to go to have later! 5/5! read more

Impossible to beat location, great cozy wood and brick interior -- would the food be a let down? No. Not at all. The Place is a cool little place, emphasis on little, but one that does the stepped up Southern fare thing with some pride and pizazz. Our quick lunch stop while classes were still out between semesters may have be the perfect time to visit. Our party of four opted to eat upstairs at a high-back four-top near the bar, a tight room but not one that felt crowded. Great light and full, old timey windows. We opted to start with the fried veggie plate ($5) as it had a combo with something for everyone -- pickles, okra, and green tomatoes. Amazingly, all were really good -- the okra big whole spears that were not at all tough and green tomatoes that were just tart and firm enough to hold up to the batter without going all soggy. Yum. Fairly big order as well, perfect for four noshing, might have leftovers with two modest eaters. All the sammiches looked good, but we went with a shrimp burger ($9 calabash style whole fried shrimp covered in slaw and cocktail sauce on a soft bun), with a side of potato salad -- just a nice sort of throwback lunch that was very filling. Also a quality Build Your Own BLT ($8.50) which really benefitted with the addition of some avocado. Pair with the gouda mac n cheese side, really hits all your buttons. And also from the throwback machine, a Tuna Melt ($8 homemade tuna salad topped with white cheddar on toasted wheat bread) that was rich and hearty and not too goopy. Our big eater opted for a meat and two ($8.50) which included a fried chicken breast along with rich mashed potatoes -- don't think anything survived. A nice surprise was the nice selection of local crafts on draft -- none of which were the usual suspects. Clearly a point of emphasis and some knowledge. Double yum. Desserts looked yummy too, but did not have any room left. Maybe next time. read more

Without a doubt the best place to eat in downtown Athens. Awesome food, great drinks, fun staff, multiple TVs, and fair prices for the portion size. The upstairs overlooks campus. Only thing that sucks is the parking- but that's everywhere downtown. Highly recommend this spot, especially on Sundays for brunch. read more

I love going to The Place for lunch! The meat + two (or three) is a great deal and has great choices! I'm not very impressed with their dinner menu, but I am picky. I'd prefer to go to this restaurant for lunch. Service can sometimes be slow, but all servers are nice. read more

This place (The Place) is really awesome! The thing that matters the most is the food, and they nailed it. I would highly recommend the Southern bruschetta (pimento cheese AND bacon) as a starter. This stuff will make you smile real big. The collard greens were fantastic. My friend got the burger which looked really good, and I got the Classic City chicken which was good. The renovation and decorations are well done. Brick interior walls, classy wood, and a sweet staircase leading you to the top floor (with nice through-the-window-views of the day winding down over Broad Street.) Visit the top floor. It's reasonably (and accurately) priced for both lunch and dinner, for what you are getting. Really there is nothing to dislike about The Place. Friendly service, good food and a great atmosphere. We had to wait a bit for our Saturday lunch, but it was worth it. We were seated upstairs in a bar area and quickly greeted by two staff members. I had the Waldorf salad, which was incredibly refreshing while two other members of my party had the BLT with chicken. Finally, my youngest daughter had the chicken sandwich. Me and my husband came here to try their new brunch menu. Sad to say we were disappointed despite the promise of the menu. My husband had the chicken and waffles and the blueberry compote they put on top was so sickeningly sweet I was surprised he didn't feel sick. It really should have been served on the side. The waffle was pretty meh and the chicken could have been good but was just soggy from compote. I got the eggs Benedict and I would really love to know how they managed to overcook the yolk yet undercook the white? Really unappetizing. Biscuit and fried green tomato were too dense. The tomato gravy was just not on the mark. I will say the grits were good. Wish it was better. Nice remodeling and promising menu but really lacking on delivery. read more

I had the burger with bacon and a Friday egg done medium and it was good/great, (4 stars). The side of collard greens tasted great but we're mostly stems and a measly portion at that (2.5 stars). My mother ordered the Thursday special, chicken and dumplings, and sent it back. Don't blame her because she didn't like the taste and we hardly recognized a dumpling. It was more like a soup but not as thick as Campbell's chunky. (1 star). They were nice to take it back and bring out a BLT without charge for her dinner. read more

With Texas A&M in town everywhere was overloaded but, the Place got us seated exactly at our reservation time and with drinks in less than five minutes. Not only was the service great, the food's even better. Everyone had something different and we sampled a little of all. My spouse and I ordered the same thing other than one without onions but the order looked totally different other than the salad served on the side. The waitress never checked on us to make sure our order was perfect. Only to stop by to drop off the check. We advised her of the discrepancy with the order having onions. A couple of weekends ago my girlfriend and I stopped in for a quick bite to eat. It was a beautiful day so we grabbed a spot on the patio overlooking the park. We were quickly approach by the wait staff, a chic college student eager to take our drink order. She did a great job of explaining some changes to the menu and sold me on a new twist to a jack in the hare which included orange marmalade (yum!) The drinks came out quickly and they were delicious. We ordered the southern bruschetta that you simply cannot pass up...trust me on this. After some excellent recommendations from our server, I decided on the salmon BLT. Now let me tell you I am not a huge fish fan (outside of sushi) so I was hesitant-but our server was so convincing I took a leap. NO REGRETS. The salmon was cooked perfectly and sat atop a beautifully concocted BLT with a fried green tomato. How could you not like that? It was wonderful, not too heavy and the salmon was delightful. I had the macaroni and cheese as a side, and while I'm normally a huge fan of anything pasta and cheese related it was not much to write home about. But that did not affect my impression on the restaurant because the salmon BLT was the star of the show... And a close second was the southern bruschetta. What a great place for a meal. The pork tenderloin was fantastic along with the mac & cheese and asparagus side dishes. I finished the meal with a piece of cheesecake that really hit the spot. Excellent southern comfort food lunch spot with reasonable to upper-end prices for the tastefully sized portions. The Place replaces another Southern comfort stable in Athens, and does it well. Patrons of 5 Star Day will not be disappointed. We ordered the Meat and Three ($10), selecting the gouda and cheese, lima beans, and maque choux. All were top notch, but it should be noted the lima beans (green and firm) were in fact matured to be white and soft, which is what we call butterbeans in the South. read more

The place had a constant flow of customers on a Thursday lunch time, after school semester was done. Very impressed. Service was great. Food took a while, but did not disappoint. We ordered 2 full size salads as appetizer for 4 , and the server offered to split the salads in halves. Salads were great. Wife had the grilled pork chop, was very good. Better than most. The sides are southern conmfort food wth the mac-n-cheese and fried onion rings our favorites. 2 of us had the chicken dumpling. It was ok, sauce was bit too thick more like biscuit gravy.
