Great spot for brunch! TBH I thought I wasn't going to find somewhere in Athens that was as good as Mama's Boy (which ALWAYS gets packed on the weekends, and sometimes gets annoying to wait an hour or two to eat). The Place was a pleasant surprise, and I'm glad it turned out to so good. The place is kind of small, though they do have an upstairs. I would say a group of max 6 people is ideal, or else you might wait ages for tables to be put together to seat a huge crowd. SADLY this spot opened up my last semester, so I've only been once for brunch on Sunday. Mimosa's are average - not too strong, which is good if you're still hungover from the previous night. I got the chicken and waffles, and they are drool-worthy. I used to be skeptical because I hated the idea of mixing sweet and savory, but def leading the bandwagon now. Went here after my son's graduation. We sat upstairs and had a lovely view of the Arch and UGA's beautiful campus. The Place serves a chicken and waffle dish on steroids. Absolutely delicious. Their Chicken and Waffles possibly could be my most favorite meal ever. Have never had chicken and waffles until now, and I would never ruin the experience by ordering this anywhere else! Wow what an amazing combination of flavors. The perfect waffle, infused with berry streaks. The lightly breaded thin chicken cutlet. And OMG the crowning glory of candied bacon on top. I can't believe how much I liked this place!! I came around 8 on a Friday night and my partner and I opted to sit at the bar instead of doing the 45 minute wait. The ambiance of this place is great. It's small, but really cozy. The decorating is really nice and I was noticing details all night. I felt like I was in a higher end restaurant than I usually find in athens. The beer selection is awesome and local. Lots of great things to try. The food was totally amazing. I ordered the chicken and waffles and I was so stunned. It was flavorful without being too overbearing. The grits on the side had a great texture and a unique taste. There is sweet bacon and apples and blueberry preserves... it was easily one of my favorite meals in athens!! My partner got the chicken sandwich with the Mac and cheese side. The mac and cheese was great and he loved the sandwich. Service is good too! Very friendly and checked up often on us. Overall, I really want to return to The Place. Popped by on a Wednesday evening around 7 after what was honestly a rough day - and I was in desperate need of some comfort food. Thankfully, The Place is just the place for that. The atmosphere is so cozy and charming, and, despite being underage, I still felt welcome and right at home sitting at the edge of the bar on the second floor. The waitstaff and the bartender were incredibly friendly, and their kindness honestly made the visit (and my day) that much better. I had the Chicken & Waffles for dinner, subbing the gouda grits for French Fries, and they were absolutely amazing. The tabasco bacon slices had a lovely, fiery kick, the waffles were delicate and fluffy, and the fried chicken perfectly crispy and juicy. The blueberry compote drizzled over the top was unexpectedly delicious - I originally wasn't so sure how it would taste with the chicken, but I was pleasantly surprised! I finished the meal with a slice of tasty chocolate-raspberry cheesecake, because you can never go wrong with dessert. The prices were very reasonable for the portion sizes and food quality, though as a college student with a bit of a budget, coming here in the future might unfortunately be restricted to a once and awhile treat. Overall, I had a lovely experience here! I definitely recommend it to anyone searching for a comforting bite to eat surrounded by quaint decor and friendly faces. The Place is absolutely fantastic! My boyfriend and I love coming here for brunch and the dinner options are delicious as well! I highly recommend trying out a daily scramble there. The chicken and waffles are mouthwatering and the blueberry reduction is perfect! The dinner salmon is fantastic as well as the bourbon seasoning. If you get a high top table near the window upstairs you'll have a fantastic view of the law school green AND good food! This was a great little spot conveniently located to campus and downtown Athens. We walked up around 6pm on Saturday and it was pretty busy, we were offered a seat at the bar for dinner and the service was amazing. Our drinks were ready within just a couple of minutes and the food was quick as well. We got the fried veggies and a salad for dinner and then splurged on the Raspberry Cheesecake for dessert, it was definitely worth it. When we left it was packed! So I'd definitely recommend thing to get there early or to sit at the bar to avoid the wait. read more

I went to The Place yesterday for the first time. I was alone so I chose to sit at the upstairs bar. I'm a veganistic person but expand to pescatarian outside my home. So, many items on a menu are not open to me as selections. The Place's menu had many possibilities for me to choose from. I selected the bourbon glazed salmon, and asked that the fish still be moist inside when served to me. It was prepared just the way I asked, and the presentation was beautiful. The grit cakes that the salmon was served atop were fantastic. Brussel sprouts were the side as the collard were cooked with fatback. The sprouts were cooked very well, a nice char on the outside tender but not falling apart, I was sad that there were not more of them even thought I thought the salting was heavy handed. I decided to have a signature cocktail that was called a ___ mule. The drink was excellent, vodka, cranberry compote, some sort of ginger beer and a lime. I would have been happy to have more. I did apparently misunderstand the description of the beverage, which stated choice of vodka, bourbon, or tequila to mean that I could select the brand of alcohol as well. So was surprised by the 4 dollar up charge. Better wording may have been "choose between" vodka, etc. etc. Also, I really think good food is deserving of better eating utensils. I hate forks that have less substance to them than cafeteria flatware. This one seemed to be stamped out of a thin piece of cheap tin. But I won't let the fork keep me from returning, even though it will continue to be a blemish on my enjoying a meal out. read more

The place is great! Very professional staff. Very tight seating with seats up and downstairs but they can fit quite a few people. Absolutely love the food. If you like southern comfort food then this place is great. Their menu is consistent you'll get the same thing pretty much every time. Prices are a little much sometimes but you'll always get good food. Staff is always polite and helpful although they can be very busy. Don't go on a crowded night you'll have to wait a while lol. The Place is a nice restaurant in downtown Athens on the UGA campus. They have two stories and a small outdoor ratting area. We sat upstairs and think it's the best spot. We ducked out of the AthFest 100+ deg. heat to eat lunch in The Place, although I had my reservations stepping through the front door, having been a huge fan of Five Star Day when I was a student at UGA. It's still intimate and cute, with fantastic service, and we lucked out in nabbing one of the window tables to people-watch. The fried app sampler was righteous, with fried green tomatoes, pickles and okra. I loved the caprese salad, but the fried chickpeas weren't very crispy, and I'm on a mission to find a fried chickpea that would be as good as one that was served on the salmon salad at what was Athens' East West Bistro. Still a gorgeous and filling salad ... and dang was the burger that my daughter ordered a monster, perfectly cooked and seasoned just right. I would only recommend that you not have to use the restroom when you're dining there as there is only one and the door is in such a tight little niche facing the kitchen, so entry (and waiting in line) is a little awkward. read more

The perfect place if you want a nice relaxed dinner. Many of the local spots are clearly aimed at college kids with loud music or sports on TV. We walked in and the atmosphere was relaxed. It was the kind of place to go on a date, meet for business or bring the family. The menu is not huge but the options all sound well planned. I had a chicken sandwich but I had to order an extra side dish because I couldn't narrow it down to one. I even ate part of my girlfriends Brussel sprouts because they looked awesome and even tasted good. I wouldn't trade my macaroni and cheese for them though. If you're in Athens, "The Place" is a must visit. read more

Stopped in here before the annual G day game and I'm glad I did. The restaurant is very tiny so its a tight squeeze in there but the food makes up for it. The staff treats you just like family as soon as you visit. They don't have a large menu, but the things that they do have that I tasted were great. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits. Told myself I was not going to come here since I loved five star day, but after hearing so many good things I decided.... What the heck, I'll give it a go. And overall I'm glad we did! Went here with my husband and mother in law. I got chicken, my husband got a burger, and my mother in law got pork. For the most part good, my chicken was a bit dry, but still flavorful...and all the sides were great! Overall a decent replacement to a wonderful restaurant. Miss you five star day, but good job place... Your doing a great job. Oh forgot to say....how different the layout is to what it used to be!!! Crazy! Very nice layout...
