Well the grits overall was fine. But the pork chop was a little burnt maybe because of the glaze. The size of the chop was small and relatively dry. This place was busy on a Friday night. The only reason I gave 4 stars was because we called ahead of time and made a reservation and then still had to wait for 30 minutes outside and then were placed next the restrooms in the back. I know someone has to go there, but that aside. The food was phenomenal. I got the shrimp and grits and my partner got the pork chop. We both ate every last scrap and I took 3 shrimps home with me because I just couldn't finish, but couldn't leave them. We also had a wonderful peanut butter stout. If you're a dark beer person definitely try what they have on tap! Aside from our seat the rest of the seating was intimate and looked comfortable. We just moved to Athens, and a friend of my partner took us here for dinner one evening. I am not a picky eater (I'll eat almost anything), but I would say I'm a bit critical (my family is filled with restaurateurs, so eating is very, very important to me). This is all to say -- that porkchop is one of the best porkchops I ever had in my life, and I look forward to eating it again. The prices are extremely reasonable as well. My dinner party also had the shrimp gumbo and chicken and waffles. That waffle was fantastic, and our friend says he thinks the shrimp gumbo is the perfect bowl of food, so that's why he keeps ordering it. I cannot wait for our next trip! read more

It took an hour to get our food. Our server was great and very apologetic at the wait time. That was fine, good friends just talking and catching up in a very cozy atmosphere. BUT, after waiting an hour you would think and hope the food would come out hot. You would think wrong. We did not want to bother our server about the cold food because we could not wait another hour for them to redo the order. The pork chop had a beautiful glaze on it and grilled just right except it was cold. The $38.00 filet special that was supposed to be medium - warm pink center, was served well done and cold. The mashed potatoes, cold. The grilled asparagus, cold. That is not on the server. That is on the manager and the kitchen. A poor manager is unable to keep the kitchen humming and a poor manager allows food to be served cold. I would not recommend this restaurant unless there were management changes. read more

We were seated next to the bar upstairs so their Bloody Mary's were a must (dangerously delicious and effective at curing a hangover). We ordered their fried veggies for an appetizer that were immediately devoured with some dang good ranch. (If you order fries....drown them in the ranch, trust me) For my entree I got the fried chicken sandwich with pimento cheese. "Grilled" just simply wasn't an option for me. This was our 3rd trip to The Place. The food was excellent as usual. The service was the star of this episode. Darby was our server. You would do well to ask for her on your visit. We sat outside which means you might have interactions with people other than those in your party. A homeless person stopped by to say "hello" which turned into a few uncomfortable minutes for us. The manager saw what was going on and intervened. He handled the situation with dignity and allowed us to enjoy our dinner without humiliating a human being just so we can have a nice dinner. Very good food, priced are mostly reasonable, tremendous location and friendly staff makes for a very satisfying dining experience.

Enjoyed a nice lunch on a Monday afternoon with my mother and sister. Nice draft beer selection, excellent macaroni and cheese. The BLT with pimento cheese and avocado wash delicious. Our server forgot to put our appetizer in (southern bruschetta) but kindly took it off the bill and have it to us anyways. My only complaint about the place is that every time I arrive, it is CHAOS at the front door. No one knows who to check in with or to seat themselves. It would help to have a clearer system or add another employee so the host isn't running all over. read more

When I was a student at UGA, Five Star Day was my favorite breakfast place, so I was disappointed when I came back to town and discovered it had closed. However, eating at The Place, located on Broad where FSD used to be, makes up for the loss. In three visits I've yet to find an appetizer, entree, or side I didn't enjoy. The Southern bruschetta and the fried vegetables are excellent starters. If you dig on swine, the grilled pork chop is prepared perfectly with a sweet apricot glaze. The hangar steak is garlicky in the best possible way. My wife has had the bourbon glazed salmon and the filet special with bleu cheese sauce and said she would definitely order both again. And the desserts are excellent; the cheesecakes are from the same local bakery who provides The Last Resort with their desserts. All in all, you can't have a bad meal here. One note: The Place is small and doesn't take reservations, so come early. read more
