My review is a little late but we ate here on Feb 16 of this year. I called ahead and they put me on the wait list so our table was ready with no wait. Service was fast and friendly. The Place is located in downtown Athens and is small and quaint. We sat downstairs so I am not sure how big the upstairs is. The entry way to the bathroom is right next to the kitchen entry/exit so be careful not to hit someone on your way in and out. Appetizers: Fried Veggies and Bruschetta. Highly recommend both they were 5/5. Drinks: Sweet Nothings the drink itself was okay, but for $12 I would have expected my cup to be full not half empty. The picture shows when it was brought to the table and had not been touched. 1/5 Sierra Nevada Celebration IPA again cup was not full and I would have expected it to be full for $7.00 3/5 Main: Recommend: in addition to the appetizers I would recommend fried chicken, Gouda cheese grits, onion rings, and ranch sauce. Chicken and waffle add candied bacon. 4/5 Shrimp and grits 4/5 Chicken sandwich and fries 4/5 Meat with 2 sides Meat and sides chosen were fried chicken, onion rings and fries. 4/5 Meat with 3 sides Meat and sides chosen were fried pork chop, onion rings, cheese grits and creole corn. The place is THE PLACE. I wish I had pictures, but I was cherishing my time with my family. We had the pimento cheese bruschetta (which has a southern take to it) and it was absolutely amazing! This is the place! Banging food, service, and space. Sat outside since there was an even upstairs, fine with being outside on a beautiful night on Main Street with sights and sounds. Service was on point, always there when I wanted/needed something. And the food was great- pimento cheese everything! Chicken sandwich putter crunch was on point and chicken was still juicy. The Place catered our holiday office dinner last night & it was delish!! We had grits, the corn salsa (a bit too spicy for me but loved the flavor), collard greens, black eyed peas, fried chicken, fried pork chops & salmon. The entire tray of chops were devoured quickly. ALL of it was great & I was truly impressed at how good the fried items were considering being in a catering dish but the crust was so good. I called fifty minutes before closing for a Togo order and now I've found somewhere I'll visit again and again. The lady on the phone who took my order was amazing from the moment she said hello until she sent me out the door with my order. I order the fried veggie appetizer, this is probably super good when it's hot and fresh! My husband ate the bourbon glazed salmon and although I drove it 30 minutes to our house he told me it was probably one of the most well cooked salmon he's tasted. The grits were creamy and rich. I added a side of the Cajun corn I believe it's called. It's well seasoned with a kick. I mixed it with the creamy grits and it was a delightful bite! For myself I chose the slaw bowl, the lady upsold for fried chicken and it was the best fried chicken! Next time I'd ask for no Parmesan as it threw me off. 9/10 would recommend. The place really played attention to the flavors, layers of flavors, simple flavors combined well. I was so impressed by even the cup of soup I had. Most places don't put the time in there... the place did. Everything we had was really amazing. Cheddar broccoli soup, slaw salad, burger with egg, fried pickles, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, fried pork chops.... We loved it all!!! Cute place in downtown Athens. It's been here for ever you can tell. The ambiance is very southern quint charming. Small but I understand they have an upstairs. We met our daughter for brunch. Had chicken and waffles. It comes with a blueberry compote so you don't even need syrup. The chicken crunchy and moist. I also had the onion rings. Probs the best onion rings I had in a while. Had a great southern brunch here yesterday! They do not take reservations, but instead recommend calling ahead to confirm availability. We waited outside with a large crowd eager to be the first customers at 11, and we were all seated and served quickly! A real country vibe, this place had great food as well. The southern bruschetta app is a must - felt like we were at the Master's eating pimento cheese. And I can't forget to mention the watermelon margarita and blood orange mule got our mornings started right! There's not much to say other than this is one of the best restaurants in Downtown Athens! Whether you go for brunch, lunch, or dinner, you will be satisfied. This was the first restaurant I went to when I moved to Athens for law school, and I have been recommending it to everyone since. We had to wait about 20 minutes for a table for 3 but they have a good process where they text you when ready and there's plenty in the nearby area to do while waiting and plenty of places to sit if you just want to chill while waiting. I got the fried chicken sandwich was very good but I would've liked the flavors to pop a little more, didn't get enough taste from the pimento cheese. Mac and cheese was good also as the side. My wife got a salad which was good. Nice signature cocktails. Food took a while but I think they have a smallish size kitchen and it's very popular so that may be expected. Super cute place in the heart of Athens and the UGA campus. Parking is where can find it, but metered. As you walk in you can sit anywhere there is an open spot. We got some stares when we sat at the only open booth for 6 but that was all that was open. We were greeted promptly with waters for the table and asked for drinks. The decor is eclectic with a mix match of different lighting and seating options. The main sitting area only has 6-7 tables, but there is a bar area upstairs if you prefer (did not go upstairs this visit). Food does take a little while as it's a complex menu with only 2 cooks in the back. They knew we had busy bee kid so they did serve them their food first, about 10min before us. They do customized your order and half the kids order to two plates, which was nice. They order the buttermilk chicken sandwich with fries. We also order "The Burger" with a fried egg add on and the BLT. The burger was very good and my BLT was very good could have used a sauce. The onion rings were beer battered and perfect - must order. I will say the food took a while to come out but it was a very good wait! We will be back for sure! read more

The Place is a charming Southern restaurant located on East Broad Street across from campus. It's a small restaurant and gets a lot of walk in traffic, so we were very fortunate that they allowed us to call ahead and reserve a table for 2 on a Friday Night, not sure they usually allow that. If you're into fried Southern food, this is your place with chicken & waffles, Southern fried veggies, fried chicken sandwich w/ pimento cheese, and more. They do have several grilled options as well. I went with the chicken sandwich with gouda mac & cheese and it was an incredible choice. My wife got the bourbon salmon with grit cakes which was just okay, but overall loved our experience. They also have a decent selection of craft beers, wine, and cocktails. This was a local favorite with my friends so we went here for brunch. Two of us ordered steak and eggs and the other ordered shrimp and grits. We ordered French toast, grits and biscuits and gravy as sides. We ordered the steak medium but it came out well done. That was a bit frustrating and the steak was so tiny. We asked them to fix the steak so they took it back and brought us out a medium cooked steak. It was delicious though. The shrimp and grits were also tasty. I loved the side of grits. The Place (formerly Five Star Day Cafe) lives up to its predecessor's standards. Small menu with great food. They've added an upstairs seating area that has a small bar! That's where we ate and I got the hangar steak mainly because the sides of mash potato and Brussels seemed the most appealing on this night. I hit a home run with the selection, my dish was fantastic. I'm a sucker for some good Brussels and these were delicious! The bar was stocked with a bunch of local brews. Stopped by here for a work lunch. A little bland but the salmon was good and crust on the outside added a nice touch. The greens surprised me in a good way and they had a hint of sweetness, the mashed potatoes were standard but the onions on top gave it flavor. Overall I enjoyed it :) read more

It took an hour to get our food. Our server was great and very apologetic at the wait time. That was fine, good friends just talking and catching up in a very cozy atmosphere. BUT, after waiting an hour you would think and hope the food would come out hot. You would think wrong. We did not want to bother our server about the cold food because we could not wait another hour for them to redo the order. The pork chop had a beautiful glaze on it and grilled just right except it was cold. The $38.00 filet special that was supposed to be medium - warm pink center, was served well done and cold. The mashed potatoes, cold. The grilled asparagus, cold. That is not on the server. That is on the manager and the kitchen. A poor manager is unable to keep the kitchen humming and a poor manager allows food to be served cold. I would not recommend this restaurant unless there were management changes. read more
