Mike (and Nico) were terrific. I live in a 1926 apartment building with "old world charm" - by which I mean every single wall (and ceiling) of my unit is lath and plaster. An improperly installed wax ring in the bathroom of the apartment above me resulted in a slow motion leak that caused wet walls and mold. After having the walls and ceiling opened up to deal with the mold I needed someone to come in and restore the original plaster (all the "modern" contractors wanted to patch with drywall). Mike responded quickly, gave me what I thought was an extremely reasonable quote, and arranged to come make the fix in a couple of days. My wife and I are restoring a historic, prewar Spanish-deco house in Glendale. The original interior lath and plaster is largely intact; however after a full electric rewire, we needed authentic, period correct repairs in order to preserve the original plaster. Mike and his son, Nico (a union plasterer for the studios), conducted repairs in 11 rooms. From start to finish, the whole job was completed in 2.5 days. Also, they were able to start work right away. Their work is impeccable. For anyone who doesn't know, lath and plaster is a trade (and art form) that is all but dead in the 21st century. Like true craftsmen, Mike and Nico have garnered their knowledge through decades of tutelage by Mike's father-in-law, who repaired lath and plaster in Los Angeles about a century ago. If you're interested in plaster repairs and sculpting (for fireplaces etc) you should strongly consider Mike. Both Mike and Nico are some of the last true plaster craftsmen in the old school. I hired the Plaster Master to replace the exterior plaster on my spa. Water damage had caused the player to flake after it was last redone about five years ago. Mike Casa of The Plaster Master and his crew were amazing! The final result is perfect and the new stucco texture is an exact match. I'm usually nervous during large house projects, but Mike put me at ease. He has an encyclopedia knowledge of stucco and plastering techniques. I like to think sometimes the old-fashioned ways are better and a more durable fix. I had to have the lower section of two exterior stucco walls broken out due to huge cracks and stucco falling off. Mike had a smart solution to add a weep screed to prevent future stucco delaminating. It made sense to replace rusted out vents at this time. I ordered copper vents which look nice and will never rust. Little did I know that the vents would be complicated to work with and Mike's crew had to spend additional hours shimming out the vents to get everything true and level. I'm fortunate that Mike and his crew knew how to expertly handle this situation. The Plaster Master is a true Pro and a magician of stucco. I was eager to meet with Michael because of the great reviews for him and his work. He was initially very responsive. I let him know my availability for the weekend and he assured me he could make it work to come out and quote the job. The agreed upon time came and after a few minutes had passed I followed up with a text to ask if we were still on. I got no response until the next day, from his number but a woman named Virginia, saying sincerest apologies and that Michael would call to reschedule for the next weekend. Assuming maybe there was some sort of medical or family emergency for a highly rated craftsman to stand a potential customer up, I responded, "thanks for the response, hope everyone is okay." The response I got said simply, "Yes all is well with everyone. Just not enough hours in the day." ??? I, too, am quite busy. In fact, I didn't take my kids to the park like they had been begging because I needed to be home for this appointment. Michael and his wife came out on a Sunday to give us an estimate on the interior of our 1921 bungalow that had cracking drywall from foundation settlement throughout. Michael Casa did a great job repairing a major opening in my home caused by the collapse and removal of the rear steps. The job was fairly complex and his long experience in the field of stucco allowed him to deal with the following: 1. Stucco repair for a house built in the 1930s but likely renovated several times in its life 2. Repairing a section of bad cripple wall framing which needed to be removed and replaced to make a good foundation for the stucco 3. Stucco repair that included the step plate of the back door. He was able to repair the stucco so that the step plate was supported and would not crack the stucco when stepped on 4. Stucco repair on a relatively thin wall in close proximity to interior surfaces without any damage to that surface The repair looks seamless and the texture of the repair exactly matches the texture of the existing stucco. I also had him patch up some small cracked patches and those look great too. The price he quoted was fair and exactly aligned with prices quoted by other stucco repair contractors. He can be a bit hard to pin down for a consultation but it was definitely worth it to hire his services. read more

Finally before he did the last room I told him I would not pay him a dollar more than the written estimate he gave me. So guess what he did? He told me he wasn't going to do the last room. When I first spoke with Mike, he told me I couldn't make an appointment directly with him, I needed to talk to his wife. When she finally called days later, she wouldn't set an appointment but said she'd call later in the week. She didn't. She did, however, call on Sunday afternoon asking if we could meet them at our house in an hour. My fiancé and I dropped everything, rushed out the door and drove across town to make the appointment. They never showed. 20 minutes after our appointment, Mike's wife left a message saying they'd "forgotten" they had another appointment in San Pedro and they'd be at our place an hour and a half later. Seriously? So we waited. And we waited. They didn't show. We tried calling but our calls went straight to voice mail. When it got to be more than 2 hours after our original appointment, we finally gave up and texted we were leaving. A half hour later Mike called. The explanation for why they didn't show or answer our calls? He was talking and didn't know how to let us know. Sorry. Really? How about one of the following: 1) Answer the calls from the client you set an appointment with earlier that very same day; 2) Have your wife who is with you phone us; 3) Say, "Excuse me, I was supposed to meet another client, let me give them a call"; or, 4) Don't make appointments you don't intend to keep. Nope. It was easier to blow us off and waste our Sunday afternoon. I even waited nearly a week to post this review, trying to give them the benefit of the doubt and hoping they'd apologize for wasting our time and set another appointment. That didn't happen either. Initially, I was impressed with Mike's passion for plastering. He told me, "Plastering is a dying art." After our experience, I'd say that in addition to plastering, manners, common sense, and respect for other people's time are also in real serious trouble. read more

The Plaster Master is as good as it gets! When a condo I manage had a leak bust through their ceiling and was then ripped apart by plumbers to repair that leak, I was left with a huge hole that needed to be repaired ASAP. I wasn't sure if plaster was the way to go for such a large hole, but with the texture on the walls and ceiling, I knew I needed a more artistic approach than just a drywall patch. Mike was the perfect find! Not only did he and his wonderful wife Virginia come by to inspect and give an estimate FOR FREE (I have never been offered this courtesy in the countless dealings I have had with repairmen, handymen, etc. in LA), he said he could do the repair the next day! Honestly, I was nervous about whether the finished product would match with the existing texture on the ceiling and walls, but after Mike and his assistant (can't remember his name) finished the job, it looked identical. A perfect match! I could not be happier with the outcome, and the pricing was very fair. I would highly recommend him to any person needing such a service. Had a great experience with Mike Casa, the Plaster Master. We had a pipe burst above the ceiling in the living room of our 1924 home. Mike is old school and knows his stuff. He made sure that he cut enough of the ceiling but not too much, took great care to seal off the area so that there was minimal debris floating around, and when the plumbing job was done, restored the plaster so that you could never tell there was a patch.
