Family of seven had a great time at the Point. The food was amazing and the staff was great. If you have 7, they don't seat you until everyone is there and that was a bit inconvenient. The ambiance was exceptional and the view of the water was perfect. Place is hidden behind the Aldi stadium so prepare to pay for parking (valet or garage). I am always on the lookout for a new dining experience. We were going to eat at the Vietnamese restaurant down the street only to find out they were closed. What a lucky break. We drove a few blocks south and pulled in a strip mall and a place called "The Point". My daughter quickly checked Yelp and saw it had good ratings so I said let's try it. We were greeted by a really friendly server who explained the menu. We decided to order all 3 of his recommendations and share. I apologize I can remember the names of what we ordered. However, I can say the huge portions on each plate was more delicious than the other. One dish was a spicy fish dish, one was a combination of spinach and beef and the third was beef in a delicious red sauce. I'm giving this place 4 starts because 3.5 isn't an option and they deserve more than a 3. Food: Last night I ordered the Wakkye (as that was the only option). I've had multiple west African dishes before, but I'd never had Wakkye so I was excited to try it. Outstanding dish!! It came with both fish and beef, a side of pasta, rice with beans and it was topped with a slightly spicy tomato based sauce. Everything was seasoned perfectly. The beef was extremely tender and the sauce...the sauce was everything I didn't know I needed to try. The fish was tilapia so I gave it to my bf and he thoroughly enjoyed it. There was enough rice and beans for us to split them and still have some leftover. I still haven't quite got over the generous portion size. So why only 4 (really 3.5) stars? This was my third time even TRYING to eat at this place. Service: The first time I went was during posted business hours and they were not open. The second time I tried to go they only had 2 of the 7 dishes listed on their daily board. Both had fish in them and since my child is allergic, we couldn't partake. While I understand running out of food, the least you can do is wipe them off the dry erase board that is there specifically to tell people what's available for the day. I would have wasted a lot less time sitting down, contemplating an order and waiting for someone to come and take it - - only to discover I can't eat. Sheesh. This last time I called ahead. I was told they were closing in 15 min (hence only having 1 dish) and they would accommodate me if I could be there in 15 min at the most. Understood. I got there in 12. I waited an additional 15 min . I don't prefer to be rushed, just to be stuck waiting. All in all I'm not sure if I will go again. It's certainly worth trying if you have spare time and you enjoy venturing outside of the mundane pizza/burger/chicken options. read more

Stopped in at random, not knowing what cuisine was even served and wasn't at all disappointed. Staff was super friendly and interested in our opinions on everything. Very accommodating to new people. While we were having the menu explained another customer gave his favorite dishes. We went with the customer's suggestions: p'nut soup and the spinach stew, both with rice. Both dishes were excellent. I had the p'nut soup. I would like the soup spicier, because I like my food to hurt me, but it was hearty and a little spicy and delicious. The oxtail was perfect. The tilapia was a nice touch, but it's not boned as I'm guessing the fish is cooked whole. Just a note, not really a negative. The rice was good with or without the soup. The serving sizes were exceptional, even if a bit carb heavy. You won't leave hungry, that's for sure. read more

Walking into this restaurant, I wasn't sure what to expect. There was a board with a menu, and a person by the board. I walked up to it, read it, did some Google searches on Eba, Fufu, and Jollof Rice, and they all came back as Nigerian food. I asked the employee(or owner?), and he said nope, it's Ghanaian. Eba looked interesting, so I ordered that, but was told that they were out. I then wanted the Jollof rice, but that's weekends only, same with Fufu. At this point, I asked what I should order, I was told to get the Wakkye. Google told me it is Waakye, but photos confirmed it's what I got. It's about as Ghanaian as you can get apparently, and is very carb heavy. The plate had garri, spaghetti, egg, fish, beef, rice, and beans. Easily two meals for $12. I was told to mix it all up, I did and found out that the fish had bones. My recommendation is to debone the fish, then mix it all up. Good texture, good flavor, very savory, nice and filling, but I wanted something sweet afterwards. They make their own ginger drink, but they were out of that as well. Overall, closer to a four star experience based on the fact that they were out of everything that I wanted, but based on price, portion size, flavor, and service, I can't bring myself on giving them anything less than 5 stars. read more

This is a restaurant in a strip at Hamilton & Main St in Whitehall in a location that has previously been various restaurants; the immediate prior was a Salvadorean restaurant which a very much liked for takeout, not fabulous visibility and high rents is the issue, I've heard. The Point serves African food from Ghana, which I was not familiar with vs African foods from other parts of Africa. Not knowing what to order, I ordered jolof rice with beef stew, something I was familiar with. Though prices seem a bit high (for lunch at least), it was a very generous amount of food, a coworker and I split it to try. It was very good, though I kind of expected a little less rice and more beef stew, my coworker disagreed. Was thinking they could perhaps have some small samples of things, like some of the soups' pictures look amazing but I have no idea which ones to try. Likely they intended to serve mostly people from their part of the world but what the heck, I am tired of hamburgers for lunch. While I was there I looked around for a takeout menu (so should have one!) and decided to go ahead and ask if they had or could do any samples. They brought me a sample of rice with spinach stew, and while at first it seemed mild, the finish was deliciously spicy, in a good way. This thing was amazing! I immediately wished I could change my order to that, which would have been rude so I did not, but have been wanting to go back all weekend just to get more of that! Probably going back this week for more, and though the menu looks like it may change from day to day, they said they do have this all the time. Yum!! I grew up in this neighborhood. Historically, the restaurants we had weren't very interesting or exciting--the usual round of family restaurants and pizza joints. In recent years, we've had a lot of chains come in too. So I was totally blown away to find a place like The Point. It's like no restaurant I've been to in this country, but it's like many I've been to in Africa, where I lived for two years. The staff was gracious, helpful, kind. They spent a lot of time explaining the food, and let us try the peanut butter soup before we ordered. (Which I did. Excellent choice.) African music was playing. Customers were speaking in different languages. And the food was breathtakingly authentic. Not what Americans think Ghanaian food should be, but what it really is. It's a very unique cuisine, with tastes I couldn't place. But everything I tried was excellent. Service could be slow, but was always thoughtful. The food was unfamiliar but exciting. If you want something different--and I mean REALLY different, not just something that is pretending to be different--The Point is an excellent choice. Be patient. Be open to new tastes. And you won't be disappointed. It's my new favorite restaurant in my old neighborhood. read more

AMAZING! Today was my 1st time visiting The Point Restaurant and it will certainly not be the last. The food is excellent. I had the Jollof rice with beef stew (it also came with a side salad) and my boyfriend had the Waakye with fish & beef stew. I've had jollof before, but it was not comparable to The Point's jollof. It was superb and the beef stew was so tender and flavorful. It was so good that I wanted to order more to take home , but I didn't The waakye was great! To me they are unprofessional. They claim they have varieties but when you call them, they tell you "not today, until the weekend" or we didn't make that today because we didn't get the side that goes with the full order. Sometimes you even place orders and when its time for you to pick up, they come back saying they didn't know it was finished. They run out of food as early as 4pm which sounds like improper planning. In short, to get food from them is dependent on luck. They are not even flexible with their menu because they have a fixed combination and would not let you mix such or interchange the combinations. read more
