She had suggested getting an Akubra when we asked about getting some authentic Australian hats. While initially the objective was solely for me to get a hat my wife ended up getting one as well because of the quality and style of the Akubra hats offered at Strand Hatters! Both store associates addressed us immediately upon entering the shop. I did not catch the lady's name who had help us but her service was fantastic! She spent the time to show us a variety of options, brands, sizes and colors and offered a few pro tips regarding care. It was bang on closing but the shop assistant didn't say anything to me, just waited patiently while I browsed and it was only when her senior came in to close up that I even realised that's what they were doing. Fake blood, liquid latex, or long-wearing regular make-up can all be found at Scotty's and it all looked reasonably priced to me! (I mean, how much IS a vial of true blood these days?...)

Oh the poor young man who brought his girlfriend into the shop to look at rings...she obviously knew her diamonds and the older cuts...she talked knowledgable about the gems while the young man went a pale white colour looking at the prices. He was uncomfortable and moved from side to side...I thought he was going to faint! Luckily the lass saw the young man's look and finished the conversation and they left the shop. Outside the shop she spoke tenderly to him...while he shook his head. My turn...I have a keen interest in antiques and I picked out a few items that would accompany something that I already have. Ummm...the prices were far too expensive...although the items were beautiful. You definitely would find originals in this shop and everybody would comment on the ring, bracelet, brooch, cufflinks, silverware etc The shop assistants were extremely attentive and pleasant.

Their general attitude towards my husband and I was extremely rude and unhelpful especially when we had questions about a few pieces. We went back twice as I loved a piece they had but after being treated badly a second time we decided not to purchase anything from these negative awful people. Sad as I adored the piece but refuse to give money to dreadful people. We found what we wanted in Woollahra at a far superior antique jeweller.

And eventually, they all are - it's the darned nature of this beautiful beast. The pain that will inevitably come when the Origami Doll Pop Up Shop disappears will be the worst. Origami Doll dresses are one of the few banes of my existence. So sweet and wearable, their price tags are often just within my price range but tip a little too far on the pricey end of this spectrum. This never stops me from buying them and I never regret my Origami Doll purchases, but it just means that I live off carrots and dry muesli for the rest of the week. This pop-up shop is a bittersweet addition to King Street's strip of alternative boutique fashion stores. I know it goes against everything it stands for, but I'm hoping Origami Doll will hang around for me.

Seriously, there are sunflower print skirts and flamingo print dresses for days, and options for both kids and adults. I also really appreciate the assortment of cute, cheap jewellery, socks and purses here. Every time I pop by I find something new that I love and inevitably spend 20 minutes debating how I can work it into my wardrobe. There's also usually a well-stocked sales rack and a rack of odd sized items marked down to $50, so it can be dangerous. My only complaint is the $15 car minimum, which caught me off guard when I fell in love with a $12 necklace because they didn't have any signs explaining their policy. I've also found that the staff are not always as helpful as they could be (playing on their phones, etc), but I recognize that it's a tough line to walk when you're trying to give customers some privacy. Overall, love this place, and will always come back to go window shopping if nothing else.

It doesn't seem like high quality materials are used in their garments and while I'm okay with wearing inexpensive items, I prefer they don't look and feel as such. Now, I'm all for the wearing of bold colour, there's far too little of it in the inner-city. As a Mountain-dweller now I forget the black uniform and stand out like the proverbial sore thumb. The clothes here were a disappointment, flimsy, in terribly small sizes and sadly lacking in anything approaching a natural fibre. I just had my eye on some green elf-boots when I heard the shop assistant on the phone with the boss asking if a customer who brought back a pair of boots because the sole came away from the uppers could get a replacement for her replacement because they were doing it again. Ok, maybe no boots today. To be fair, I did buy a great chartreuse coloured handbag from here years ago and although it is looking a little battered with age, hey, so do we all.

Paints, chalk, rulers, paper, cardboard, models, clay, plastercine, pencils, anatomical figurines and much more, all at reasonable prices and in great supply. I was surprised how cheap the acrylic paint is there, seeing as it can cost a pretty penny elsewhere. The store also holds art classes and acts as a studio in the upstairs area. Home to various lessons in life drawing, specialised arts and the like. The go to place in Newtown for art, books and art based education.

Art on King have all your Art and stationary needs from paints, brushes, pens (what an artist would expect). They also have an extensive range of beautiful large sheets of paper, from delicate embossed papers to Nepalese paper. Also as I am seeing more often, they have a unique range of wrapping paper which would be much better suited as a wall hanging than wrapped around a box, particular note should be made of the human skeletal diagram paper and mushroom paper.
