After visiting the Piggly Wiggly near me and finding it quite lacking for my typical midweek produce refresh, I was glad to see that the Produce Place is also walking distance from me. I knew I was in for a treat when right before me, a farmer pulled up in a beat up pickup truck with the bed totally full of lettuce. It's not quite a farm stand, though you can find a lot of local produce. If a corner store and a farmer's market had a baby, that baby would be The Produce Place. Not all of the produce is local, but it's clearly labeled. Other than produce, you can find local meat, a small selection of natural/ gluten free pantry and snack foods, and bulk dried goods. The meat is slightly pricy, running you $8 lb for grass fed beef, compared to grocery stores around here that sell it for $6-7, but I like supporting local farms, so I think it's worth it. The dried goods section allows you to get bulk items in small quantities- I saw 1 lb bags of many dried goods, so even if you aren't much of a bulk shopper, it can be easy. There is also locally roasted coffee at a fair price. In terms of gluten free selections, I was pleasantly surprised to see Bob's red mill specialty flours- including gluten free oat flour, which I use for baking and often have trouble finding at typical grocery stores. There were also gluten free crackers, Schär bread, and granola bars. I'll be back, this time with a real canvas bag as carrying my groceries in a paper bag proved tricky. read more

The Produce Place has become my favorite place to get groceries! While I also enjoyed the store pre-pandemic, I especially appreciate everything they have done to keep their store COVID-19 safe. Masks are mandatory in the store and the store has a set capacity of people. If the store is over capacity, they add a sign to the front and people are encouraged to wait outside - following a 1-out, 1-in model. Even when the store is at capacity, everyone is respectful and waits outside patiently. Obviously, at The Produce Place, the produce is top-notch. I appreciate that it is a one stop shop for fruits, veggies, and herbs as well as other local options like local eggs, cheeses, meats, and baked goods. They also have delicious grab and go meals. I first found The Produce Place when looking for a grocery store to support locally and to shop mostly zero waste at. The Produce Place allows you to bring your own bags and also has options like milk in glass bottles that you can later return to the store. I miss the old produce place...It started with the physical changes to the store. Blinding white to fit in with the gentrification of "New Nashville". whatever, I can get past that... sometimes you've got to keep up with the times. and if you want to look like mini Trader Joe's that's ok. new people moving here can't tell the difference. Prices are incredibly high for the selection of things they offer at Kroger quality. you used to be able to go in and see familiar faces greeting you, have quality conversation with the employees there, now? nope. everyone is either too busy or flat out rude. the cost of things used to make sense, quality product, quality customer service, and a friendly vibe. who ever bought it out, congrats on blending in instead of standing out. I'm hope things will smooth out overtime with whoever owns the store now, or if it's the same owner. I don't even know. I hope even with all the change they can find the same heart they used to have. it's a great store overall, just not my cup of tea anymore unfortunately. read more

Best grocery store in Nashville, and I don't know if it is close. They carry so many great local goods, from Cafe Nonna sauces to local cheese to Benton's bacon. Their produce is always fully stocked and looks so fresh, and they always are advertising their seasonal offerings. Also, they have the best gluten free selection of any grocery store in the area. They have every Schar product known (even puff pastry in the freezer) and so many other things like banana bread and snacks. If you can't make it to a farmer's market, this is your next best thing. read more

Wow, mind blown, very very little of the produce is organic. I've shopped there off and on, I assumed everything was organic, it's not. When I asked about it I was told it's too expensive to have much organic, no- it's NOT. I am willing to pay for organic, not natural. I happen to drive by one of the 'local vendors' daily and not only watch them spray the pesticides, I watch the immigrants in the field hand picking everything from this big farm. Very very misleading advertisement, the 'local vendors' are NOT organic farmers, they are pretty large agricultural farms from not far out of town. Saving my money from real local farmers, who understand that organics is what the consumer wants, period. read more

Shame on me for not posting a review on this gem sooner! I've even held "Duchess" status more than once! For shame, indeed. What's not to love about The Produce Place?!? Ok, fair enough...they're not open on Sundays. But can you think of anything else? Nestled in the heart of Sylvan Park, this neighborhood shop is the epitome of such. Small place and tiny aisles packed with nothing but sheer goodness. They focus on things local and/or organic. Simply put, WIN-WIN. Their products are surprisingly affordable, and they label it all; so you know when you're buying lemons from California, or limes from Mexico. This is my go-to spot for fresh tomatoes from local farms. Forget the mealy crap from the big boxes. This place has what you crave, my friends! They even offer a refrigerated section that houses more than local dairy products. (Including cheeses. YUM!) You can purchase a full meal to-go, made with love locally, and with no question what in the world it consists of. Local bread. Local honey. Local desserts. Did I mention that the smell of the place is deliciously intoxicating? The frozen section is quite small, but packed with healthy options...and maybe not-so since they recently added Jeni's pints to their inventory. (Oh.Hell.Yeah.) I'm fortunate enough to live within walking distance from this special place, but I think I'd trek here even if I didn't. Parking? It may seem scary at first glance. Fortunately, the gravel lot out back provides plenty of room to accommodate the carriage. Venture on over. You will not be disappointed...and if you are, I cannot help you. Ha! read more

I know that in my neighborhood it's considered politically incorrect to not love The Produce Place, but I don't. I like it OK and go if I need something I can't find at Publix.The other day I stopped in and got a couple of green tomatoes to fry and I have sometimes bought one of the ready-to-eat soups they have; they are very good. But, it's crowded and the young cashiers always seem as if they are doing me a favor by taking my money. If I were more of a gourmet cook, I am sure I'd go more often for their spices and bulk items, but I'm not. Parking can be a hassle, too. But, they are doing something right and I am glad they are successful and draw many repeat customers - just not me. read more

Wonderful fresh and local food. My personal favorites are the fresh homemade bread brought daily by Village Provisions bakery. It is amazing, made fresh daily and the best fresh bread I've had around here. I won't tell you which one to try in hopes that there will still be a loaf of my favorite on the shelf ;). Want a small neighborhood grocer? Produce Place is for you! Just stopping in here makes me want to move to the Sylvan Park neighborhood just so I can call it my own! Again, small place, but well stocked with fresh fruits and veggies from our local Tennessee farmers, also fresh cheeses and dairy are aplenty. Fresh coffee beans too. I have a small herb garden at my house, and buy most of my herbs here...they've got a small selection of plants too but I wouldn't call it a full-blown nursery. 2.5 Reading these other reviews makes me wonder if something's changed since the fall or if I came here on an exceptionally bad day (a Saturday). But, unfortunately, I didn't have a great experience at The Produce Place. In fact, my produce was in pretty bad shape... which isn't a good thing for a produce place. On a positive note, everyone with whom I interacted was incredibly nice... and that's part of what makes this review so difficult. I sat on it for a while. I really really wanted to have the 5-star experience. But: Parking is a bit awkward; The space is cramped, the carts are small, aisles are narrow, and the space not the cleanest. It's never a good thought/feeling when shopping for food to worry about the cleanliness of the product; The selection is small. I understand it's a niche store but a name like 'The Produce Place' (for me) evokes thoughts of large selections of fresh produce. Which leads me too...; The produce was rotten. I had to sort through more items than I wanted of moldy produce. I guess it speaks to the freshness of the product when it was first placed out for sell? I don't know. It was a turn off; To add insult to injury, this food isn't cheap. You're not shopping at The Piggly Wiggly, folks. Being asked to pay premium prices for not-premium food doesn't make sense to me. I've found (much) fresher and better quality produce at farmers markets. I've found better pricing at other grocery stores. I've found better shopping experiences throughout town. Again, the employees were very nice and the store seems to be beloved... but I just didn't get it. read more

Totally love this place. While growing up in Dallas we would always go to a local produce joint that a family friend owned. The tomatoes were always fresh, local, and packed with flavor. A scattering of local and/or organic food items plus plants for your own garden. Now I have found my Nashville version of Gene's Fruit Stand. Produce Place is small but you can tell that all items are chosen very selectively. Local fruits and veggies are great but my favorite items are the fair trade coffee and granola wall. The local cheeses and organic snacks are pretty awesome too! Disadvantages... I hate to include these, parking is a bear plus prices are more than Publix (but worth it). Biggest frustration is when I realize about 6:45 while making dinner that I forgot a veggie and then remembering they closed at 6:30. Either way, get your veggies here. SOOOO Good! read more

True to its name, Produce Place is a place to get produce. Specifically, locally-grown and organic produce. Unlike the Turnip Truck or Whole Mart (oops, I mean Whole Foods), you won't find much here besides food. No yoga mats, no nettie pots, no magic crystal "deodorant." I know for some people that's probably not a plus, but I love the simplicity of it. Produce Place is small (about the size of a 7-11), but stocks a decent array of fresh fruits and vegetables, plus organic versions of some of your most common packaged foods (cereal, chips, chocolate, etc.). The fruits and veggies sport hand-labeled signs letting you know whether or not they're organic and where they lived before they were plucked from the vine, or the tree, or the ground. There's a small frozen-food section, and an assortment of locally made foods, including fresh salads and the pile of baked goods on the checkout counter that kept calling to me and trying to force me to buy cookies and brownies. There is comfort in the neighborhood feeling of this cute little corner market. It seems like the kind of place where people from the neighborhood can come and pick up what they need, become "regulars" in no time, and start knowing everyone by name. It's always nice to have a little slice of Mayberry in the heart of the city! read more

I may be a little biased in the fact that this place reminds me of a little market I went to in my hometown before the biggy box stores moved in, so it could be a nice little piece of nostalgia, but all that aside the Produce Place is a really good place to pick up spinach and organic greens by the pound, get reasonably priced local produce (I refuse to pay $7 for blueberries at big chain natural grocers) and try out some fun bulk grains or a new cheese! They also have bulk coffee and local breads, you won't find everything you need, but you will find 80% of it. I love this place but the 3 things that would make it even better are: better meat selection (I know it's called produce place), wider aisles (they work with what they've got) and slightly less apathetic employees, but hey, high school kids need jobs too. All in all, great reasonable prices on healthy foods and its cute and nostalgic to boot! read more

I want to build an apartment above this place and live here. It is so amazing. It's like a little indoor farmer's market, with stands of fresh produce throughout the store. The prices on some produce are lower than most grocery stores, so props to a local place for keeping the prices fair. That alone is a rare occurance. It's all organic, and that's why I love to get the salads. Some people think I'm crazy, but there is a difference. I give my husband the cherry tomatos, and he swears they're the best he's ever eaten. I recently tried a Birch Beer they for the sake of trying it. It tasted like pepto bismol, but was refreshing nontheless. The people working there don't really care that you're there, which is the only rub. They DO sale bread from multiple local bakeries, and muffines from Anne's Cakes, so that's just the icing on the cake. read more

I FINALLY made it to The Produce Place today. I have lived right down the street for a year and a half now, and just never have made it in, until now. This is a great little local market. They sell tons of local produce and goods. A lot of the stuff that you see at the local farmers markets, you can pick up here. From breads, to veggies, to handmade pastas and pizzas, they have pretty much all you could ask for. They even have local fresh milk and yogurt, which you don't see just anywhere. They don't have a lot of meat options, so if that's what you are looking for you probably will be disappointed. Such a great find, and can wait to become a local here. read more

I rarely go to The Produce Place, especially since I no longer live near Centennial Park. But I was in the area, and swung by for a few items. The Produce Place is great - a local, somewhat organic, neighborhood grocery offering a small bulk section and some specialty items. It was here before Whole Foods! The Produce Place holds a rightful place on the list of beloved Nashville businesses. It goes without saying, but we're not talking about Kroger prices. Honestly we're not even talking about Whole Foods prices.. But we're talking a locally sourced, small business. If that's important to you (which sometimes it is for me), it's worth spending the extra several dollars and getting everything on your grocery list at the Produce Place. A big surprise to me, they sell local bread mix Soberdough!! The best beer bread you'll ever have. read more

For 10 years I lived a five minute walk from Produce Place and never went there. I guess I had to move away to come to appreciate it. This is the local connection. I love love love this place! I could probably come shopping here every day. Screw Whole Foods, this is what I'm talkin bout with regards to an organic grocery store. I'm lucky enough to have this place just a short distance away from where I live but even if you aren't in the neighborhood, it is worth the trip. Produce Place is very similar to East Nashville's Turnip Truck but I think I like the Produce Place a little better. It is smaller than the Turnip, but it carries more relevant items. The produce selection takes up half the store and they have fruits, veggies and even fresh herbs in almost every variety you'll need. They have a nice selection of yummy organic chocolates and I love their dried fruits. They have a limited selection of canned and dry stock items, but they more than cover the basics. Also their selection of meats is very slim but they have a fantastic variety of vegan items. They sell locally made cheeses and even local organic milk in cute glass bottles that you can bring back for a deposit. The staff are super friendly and are on a first name basis with most of their customers. Really the only thing I don't like is how cramped their aisles are, but I guess I'd rather have the selection than larger aisles so its a minor complaint. read more

I've been meaning to come here for months, since it's within walking distance. I finally made the visit a few weeks ago, especially since someone mentioned a bulk foods area. A few thoughts: a.) Very narrow aisles. b.) Nice selection of fruits and veggies. c.) I was in looking specifically for root vegetables. I don't remember if I saw turnips or rutabagas. I thought I saw parsnips, but since they were mislabeled as "Florida radish", I assumed that the radish in Florida really were white carrot-looking things. The parsnips looked like they had seen better days. d.) Small selection of prepared sandwiches in their refrigerated aisle. I opted for a sandwich on sourdough. I didn't taste the sourdough. I actually make my own sourdough baguettes, so I don't know why I thought this would be worth getting. If I had a car, this place is literally 3 minutes from my place. Since I don't, I have to walk 20 minutes, and on Nashville's infamous lack of sidewalks in some neighborhoods. Sadly, it's not worth the fear of getting hit by a truck on a blind curve to get here. read more

I can't believe I've lived around the corner from this little gem for over a year and I just recently visited for the first time! Boyfriend and I tried out a little bit of everything. Some avocados, dried papaya, dark chocolate covered ginger, fresh orange juice (regular and blood orange - yum!), and the list goes on. I think we could've spent all afternoon in there. The place is small, but it packs a big punch! There is plenty to choose from, and plenty to enjoy. Now that I'm addicted to the dried papaya, I'll be back on a regular basis. For some reason I always forget this place is in the neighborhood. I think I usually notice it on Sundays when I'm on my way grocery shopping and the Produce Place is unfortunately closed. Every time I do stop in I'm pleased with what I find. It's a nice spot for fresh fruit and veggies. They have lots of local goods which is always nice. Though small, the Produce Place packs a big punch. Charming and tiny, you can find to a name a few: organic soups, gourmet canned salmon, a whole lot of aromatic and enticing coffee, fancy bread and cheese, and of course fruits and vegetables. It is definitely difficult to navigate when there are more than 4 people patronizing it, but nonetheless a great local stop. I can spend more than my fair share of time just looking through all the locally made or organically produced goodies. I will say, however, that it is not the place for those on a tight budget to check off everything on their grocery list, as higher quality products usually mean higher quality prices. A cute little organic grocery store. Some stuff is way too pricey for my wallet (cereal, pasta, etc.), but you can find good prices on some of the produce. I like that they offer milk in glass bottles, but since I don't live anywhere near by, I skipped it because I didn't know when I would get a chance to get back and return the bottle. Produce Place carries a couple of products that I haven't seen anywhere else in Nashville, like the awesome Boulder potato chips. Unfortunately, I didn't see the regular Boulder chips - only a couple of flavored varieties. Other interesting finds included Bobby-John-Henry garlic bread (baked fresh same day) and CascadeFresh yogurt (which I'd never seen before but looks awesome). read more

The produce left much to be desired. I went thinking I would be buying fresh, local, organic produce but many of the items are from Mexico! There were no fresh berries either. I was really disappointed on the prices as well. Whole Foods sells Annie's Organic Green Goddess Dressing for $3.99. The price at The Prodice Place was $5.19! The local bread selection and pre-made food is excellent but I can't justify making a special trip to this place when you can go to the Franklin Farmer's Market and have much more variety in produce. read more

Not everyone is an up and coming yuppy,buppy high end, upper middle class person. All of us can't whip out our debit/credit card to pay for our purchases. 2008 is the twentieth anniversary of Barry Burnette's Produce Place. Friends and neighbors come from all around for mostly organic fresh fruits and veggies which Barry personally searches out. The prices are mostly cheaper than Whole Foods and the produce is more locally grown on family farms than the Green Hills giant. Some of the honey is made by busy bees in Sylvan Park neighborhood yards. Talk about local! Nuts, berries, cheeses and other grocery products from small producers are also here in this small store. read more

The novelty of the place will keep me coming back, as will the fresh, homemade foods.
