We just moved into a new home that has a large walnut tree in back. It started dropping lots of leaves all of a sudden in May, so we called The Professional Tree Care Company on recommendation of an arborist friend. Both Matthew and Lauren came out and spent a combined good hour plus of time checking out the tree (and freeing up the truck based from some neighboring roots), as well as talking with us on the correct care of our other trees. We gave them the go ahead to spend several hundred dollars in testing to see if they could figure out why the tree was dropping leaves so early in the season. But, before they did, Lauren spent a bunch of time calling around and doing more due diligence and determined this was just the walnut being a walnut and that while it probably has a minor fungal issue, the treatment wouldn't be worth it in this case. So, while they could have spent our several hundred dollars for testing and recommended what I assume would be thousands of dollars in fungal treatment, they called and recommended that the tree was doing well as is no need to do more. And no charge for all their time (I offered!). Definitely will be having them come back this summer to do a pruning of a couple trees, including that leaf dropping walnut, to keep them in good shape. read more

This company communicated clearly, bid the work fairly priced and did an amazing job. This was my best experience with a tree company in the twenty-five years I have been needing a tree service. They show up on time, their prices are within range of other bonded and licensed tree care services, and if there is a problem, they step up and take care of it, no questions asked. The Professional Tree Care Company removed one of the biggest eucalyptus trees in the Berkeley/ Oakland area. It was a difficult job involving and enormous crane and lifting huge pieces of tree over the house onto the street. They were able to keep the street open to traffic while removing the enormous tree and set up the giant crane positioning it Over the driveway and partially in the street. They have impressive expertise and were remarkably speedy , taking only 3 days to remove the entire tree. We can't recommend them highly enough. read more

They do a free estimate. Craig, their arborist came by for about 10-15 minutes and we talked about my oak tree. I was worried about it because it had some termites in the cavity of the tree and the whole tree looked pretty stressed out. He assured me the tree would not die, explained some of the structural details of how the tree is healing itself from whatever caused it to have that cavity (he speculated about what kind of damage would cause that), poked a few things with a convenient stick I had lying around and was just very kind in general. He discussed the drought and the importance of mulching. No pressure to buy anything. He was very jovial about visiting and I felt I could really trust the guy. I did not need to hire anyone and am busying myself with collecting all the oak leaves around the tree to mulch it up to protect the roots. read more

they removed a very large pine tree threatening my neighbor's yard, yes. they did that well. in the process of removal they decimated a row of flowering impatiens and broke one of the very large ceramic pots the impatiens were in. the arborist who came out to inspect was very uncool, kept denying the impatiens in three other pots had been damaged. i showed him the garden tape now hanging limply from one of the impatiens branches that had held the branches together as proof that branches had been lopped off. he refused to accept that as proof & said he had no idea why the tape was there. he calls himself an arborist but doesn't know impatiens blooms year long. very unpleasant interaction. i can't recommend them even with a lower bid than other tree services. read more

They walked me through a somewhat complex project which involved multiple visits to cut trees then remove roots once our concrete had been torn away. Like so many other experiences you will read here, ours was top notch from beginning to end. Craig quickly evaluated our large dead Oak, and got the bid right to us. Alphonso and his team arrived within a week to do the delicate tricky removal. It took 2 days, but the end result was no other damage to the spot, clean up each night, tree removed and chipped without drama. We never want to have to use them again(!!!), but if we have another tree issue, PTC will be the first call we make. read more

The work in my back yard was done earlier this year. I had a couple of trees removed. The good things: They removed all three trees and all the debris. They used a large crane to do so and didn't damage my house. The price, I thought, was very reasonable. The bad things: Communication was particularly bad. The arborist said he'd be there at the end, and wasn't; he also didn't respond quickly to my email and phone calls later. They didn't treat the stumps so they wouldn't grow, as agreed, and had to be called back for another day when I could finally get hold of the company. And, worst of all, they left two large holes in the grass of my backyard. My advice to those who use them: keep on top of the situation, inspect the job immediately afterwards, and insist that your arborist be there so you can talk to him or her. read more

I've been helping a friend get his yard in shape. We hired Professional Tree to come out and do some pruning on a couple of maple trees and help us remove a huge section of bamboo the previous owner had planted. I admit I was worried that the bamboo would be a massive job. Francisco's team had it cut down, ground the stumps and roots as much as they could and clean out the area in half a day. The maples really needed a lot of TLC. The one in the front got thinned out to keep the wind from tearing up the canopy. The one in back had some dead branches removed and it got shaped up a bit too. We happily took the wood chips from the crew for the flowerbeds in front. When I look at how much time Bob and I would have spent doing the work ourselves (and lets face it, there is no way we'd be climbing up a 30 foot tree with a chainsaw), renting the stump grinder, and hauling the bamboo rubbish to the dumps, the cost of the work was money well spent. Let's face it, sometimes you just need the pros. We've already decided that Professional Tree will be back next year. read more

These guys did a good job with removing a large tree from our property, and trimming two other smaller trees that had gotten out of hand. The arborist who came out to meet me and discuss the work was very knowledgeable, and kept the well being of the tree in mind. One thing that bothered me was scheduling the job. It was done in March, when rains were on and off throughout the days. This caused my appointment to get pushed back quite a few times because emergencies came up that they needed to get to first. It was a bit hard to get their attention to work on my problem, but when they did, things went smoothly. But I do think that they are geared towards larger jobs, which I think explains the delays I experienced. Pricing was very good. I had two other quotes that were somewhere around 25% higher! read more

We've had them out to do more trimming on the Japanese Maple in front and take down more of the plums in back. The arborists/estimators are really friendly and knowledgeable. And the crew that came to do the work was so fast, organized and clean, I might have not known they'd come by, but only because they had knocked to tell me when they got there and again when they left. I was very impressed with the timely service and attention to detail I received with this tree company. I have 2 fairly large eucalyptus trees in my backyard that were starting to become a nuisance to our neighbors. I called the office and was surprised at how quickly they were able to schedule an arborist to come out for a consultation. Craig came out and spent about 45 min. going over the various options of what can be done to tend and maintain our beautiful trees. He was very thorough and patient. Once the consultation was finished we received a reasonable estimate and decided to utilize them for our tree services. They were able to come out about 2 weeks later. It was POURING on the day that the crew to come out to the house to do the job and I was very concerned that I would be getting a call to postpone service. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised when they showed up on time with smiles and a ready to work attitude. They were running up and down those trees swiftly and did a fantastic job. Craig followed up with us and walked us through the whole thing. For a company that specializes in larger scale projects (the presidio in SF and Monterey) they had all the attention to detail you would expect from a smaller company. Took down a very large redwood in my yard that was right next to the house. Scaled the tree and, using a crane, cut the tree section by section and lifted it over the fence to a waiting truck. Accomplished this safely and without damaging the house. Ground the stump using grinding machines. Would be a 5-star review except that it took me a few phone calls to get them back to complete the stump grinding. Still, I would highly recommend this company. They were on schedule, very professional, cleaned up all the mess, and accomplished the tough tasks safely. Their price was better than competitors, due to the fact that they own and operate their own lumber mill, and by planning to harvest and sell the wood, they were able to offset some of the cost of removal. read more

They removed one large tree along with the stump and trimmed another of 3-4 large branches. They did not damage any surrounding plants or any property with their operation nor the large equipment. I have a 100 to 120 year old black walnut tree that has not been pruned for many years. I got 5 professional arborists to look at it and bid on end-pruning, crown reduction and dead wood removal. Though The Professional Tree Care Company was not the lowest bid, I was impressed with the concentration that Matt Jensen gave to the appraisal. While others looked at the tree for a few minutes, left and sent me an estimate, after I though the inspection and conversation was over when Matt visited, I went back outside and he was still there inspecting the tree and making notes. He was the only one who took the time to walk around and inspect the base of the trunk. I accepted their estimate and scheduled the pruning. They arrived exactly on time with two men in the tree and four on the ground. Matt, the arborist supervised every cut that was made to my tree. Since the tree was so old and there was so much die-back in the crown of the tree, I expected the tree to look fairly unbalanced but to my surprise, it looked fantastic. About 30% reduction in the limb structure was removed and I can't wait to see what it looks like when it leafs-out. I recommend this company highly. Previously I had positive dealings with this company but something has changed. On 3 recent occasions Professional Tree was quite late for appointments and a number of messages I sent to them received no response until I sent follow-up messages. In addition to these frustrations I received a quote from them that was extremely high. I had similar work done by another company for far less. Perhaps the worst experience I had with them involved cables they'd installed to stabilize forked trees a few years ago. I was having difficulty confirming that they were still in place so they sent one of their arborists out. He claimed that he could see one particular cable that I was unable to see. He seemed quite sure of himself until I happened to locate the cable lying under some debris at the base of the tree! It had pulled out and fallen and was obviously not still in place as claimed by the arborist! Unfortunately I have to recommend not dealing with this company. As an alternative, I've had good luck recently with Garcia's Professional Tree Service. read more

First of all, I should start off by saying I am very particular and have high expectations for excellence. I don't give 5 stars easily. I've used this tree company for years, both on my home property as well as my rental properties. I also recommend them for my landscape clients as well - they have probably worked for hundreds of my clients. I've had them do regular pruning work on small and large trees as well as emergency tree work and tree removals. I can say hands down, they are the best tree company in the Bay Area. Because of this, they are quite busy, but they always manage to fit my work in and make me feel like I'm their only client! Their arborists are very knowledgeable, reassuring and responsive, which makes me feel comfortable turning the work over to them. Also, every one of their employees I've worked with is SO NICE and attentive. In my experience, this is unique in the field to have that much consistency from the "top down". Office staff, arborists, and tree workers are all genuine, helpful and positive. They are a great group, they do fantastic work, and I HIGHLY recommend them! read more

I can't say enough about the quality of the tree service and the professionalism of the team. We had a citation from the OFD that our redwood was too close to the house. The tree specialists at The Professional Tree Care Company gave us a free quote, which was very well-priced (I got multiple bids). We accepted and the following week the team came and did their magic, including a free trim of some dead branches of another tree on the property.Our redwood is now legal and trimmed beautifully to provide a luscious canopy over our patio. This is the fifth year I have used PTCA to trim, shape and thin my two ornamental pear trees and two Japanese maples. The crew comes on time every time, they are friendly, professional, and provide guidance on why they are doing what they are doing. They work quickly and efficiently and do a great job of cleaning up when they are finished. The estimates have always been firm and there have been no surprises when the bill comes. My only (very small) issue is that I always want them to be a bit more aggressive with the pruning than they are comfortable doing. We talk back and forth and they win--but I remind myself that they are the pro's and the trees always look great when they leaf out. read more

I hired Professional Tree Care when a huge branch of a Myoporam tree fell down. Rather than take down the whole tree, PTC helped to conserve the living main trunk and living branches by pruning off excess weight on the limbs. They also pruned a stone pine that was extremely congested with many intertwined branches. Now both trees are balanced, well shaped and there is space for the wind to blow among the branches. The came on time, worked efficiently and carefully and cleaned up really well. I highly recommend them for tree work. read more

This company never got back to us with a quote. A rep came out , looked at our dead tree, said he would get back to us with a quote for removal and soil testing. Never heard anything. I called the office after a couple weeks, and they apologized, saying they were behind and we would hear from the rep soon. Again, nothing. Friendly people but a waste of time. read more

This is one of those times that I get to write a review that makes me smile. Professional tree care removed a huge (sick) Redwood tree along with a pine tree. They showed up when they said they would, removed the trees and cleaned up thoroughly. This was not an easy situation for a tree removal, the redwood was 4' in diameter at the base and 150 feet from the curb. My neighbor and I had some concerns about some Eucalyptus trees behind our properties after one of them had fallen. I allowed Professional Tree Care Company to access my driveway to get at the trees. In the process, their crew of 4 used by driveway as a hangout leaving trash all over the place. By the end, they had damaged my garage door, the storm drain on the corner of my garage and the plantlings next to my driveway. Worst of all, they left 4 feet of dirt on my driveway so that I couldn't park any more. Initially, they said they would help but never followed through. Sadly, I now have taken them to small claims court. Be wary of Craig and the owner, Brian... and certainly do not pay them until they are finished and have cleaned up the area. read more

Never, Never, Never make the mistake of hiring this unprofessional company who could give a crap about what you want. I HAD a beautiful White Birch tree, told them exactly what I wanted to keep, what I wanted trimed, it was clear and agreed upon. Had to schedule it out to get the one guy who was "good", refered by a landscape artist. "If you can get him then dont use these guys." On the day of my appointment he was sent to another site even though the entire appointment was set up to have him. If they were "professional" they would have called and rescheduled knowing that the appointment was made specifically around him. Major mistake. Now all my sweeping beautiful branches GONE, Butchered up about 15', ruined, never to grow back again. Went in and complained. Did they call a manager... NO... did they care....NO... I had them sent the orginal guy back out to witness the BUTCHER job. He agreed they had not done ANYTHING I had asked for, totally screwed up tree and the butchered branches would NEVER grow back. It will take a good ten years to get the other branches to grow out and shade the areas I had. Apparently there is a percentage of bad jobs and I just happened to fall into the crappy job percentage, If they were professional why didn't they tell me that part or the risk in hiring them? He even adjusted the bill because it was such a bad job. The adjustment was a pittance, really an insult for the amount of DAMAGE done to the entire area the tree covered and the animals it use to serve, the wires it use to cover, the deck, etc. which was part of my voiced concerns. It took away thousands of dollars in value to my property acording to the property appraisers. Still can't believe that I trusted this guy. i am giving them a four star because of my interaction with them and how they handled business. They came out as scheduled and talked to me to see what I wanted/needed to do. Prior to that, when I made the appointment, it was handled professionally on the phone. I had to call the day before and made last minute request to shift the time of the appointment due to work and they were very accommodating. The gentleman showed up on the dot and walked around the property with me, listened to what I wanted to do and also give his input. I think the next day or so, an estimate came through via an email and a few days after that, they also sent a hard copy of the estimate via the post office. I didn't go with them because another company had a better price (not by much and their prices are competitive but for me, I had a budget that I had to stick to and the other quote was closer to my budget). Anyway, I am rating them again on their professionalism and how they handled things. I had 1 company who blew me off after scheduling time with me. Two other ones didn't even bother to return my calls/msgs. After all of that, I really appreciated the way things were handled here even though I ended up not hiring them for the job. Communication could have been a little better (e.g.: just which day they'd arrive to begin the project) but in retrospect they did the job and did it well, on time, to our satisfaction, etc. At the quoted price, similar to other bids. On the plus side, I called on Friday and they met me Monday to provide an estimate for removing and pruning several trees. BUT, I discussed the same scope of work with 3 licensed contractors. Two quoted $4,200 and $4,400. Professional Tree Care quoted $15,000! They may be excellent, but I'll never know. read more

These guys have been contracted by the SF city apparently to trim trees and they are wrecking trees in my neighborhood. I don't know who they hired for this job but they are certainly not professionals. They basically ruined the tree in front of my house, which was a beautiful tree that we featured in the "Trees of San Francisco" book. If you doubt my review, just drive up Parnassus Ave in Cole Valley and look at the widespread damage from the hack job crew. read more
