I had a mixed experience with Alejandro over the 6-8 months I worked with him. While he was generally responsive and made lots of promises, he misrepresented himself as an arborist when I needed one for tree root pruning around a sidewalk permit with the City of Oakland. Alejandro only told the truth after we had gathered a big 10-person crew of my general contractor's team, the city inspector and whole concrete team ready to pour the sidewalk. With all these men looking to him for approval as the arborist, he buckled and admitted he wasn't a "certified arborist" but a "licensed arborist." We were all dumbfounded. This colossal waste of time cost me several thousand dollars more from a two week delay and extra man hours over Xmas, when Alejandro left a big safety hazard of sharp nails, overturned plywood, and a mess of wood chips on the sidewalk that another crew had to manage when he was a no-show on the cleaning part. At least he did actually prune the roots after he found a real "certified arborist" to replace him. He did cut back the tree branches just fine. But If you need anything more official than a tree haircut, I don't recommend you choose Alejandro. read more

I'm very happy with the work the Cal-Line did. Alejandro recently came to look at a big pine tree (least 40 feet up) on my property which we haven't touched in the 7 years we've lived there. Alejandro looked it over to confirm that the tree seemed healthy, and gave me quotes for a trim/prune and a full removal. One thing he told me was that Pines need to be pruned when it is cooler otherwise it improves the chances of beetles coming in and killing the tree, no other companies offering quotes mentioned that. We proceeded with them pruning our big tree, whom climbed on and used safety ropes. They roped big branches so they didn't just fall to the ground. They also had a team removing the branches to get chipped. They took off a decent amount of weight off while preserving the tree. While it would be safer in the long run to take down the trees, we wanted to keep them as long as we can because the not only provide shade or homes for animals but they add character to our property and neighborhood. The team worked pretty efficiently, did their work that day in a few hours. We have a bunch of trees on our property so we will probably call them again in the future. read more

Super responsive and did a great job taking down my palm tree (very large) as well as grinding the stump. They were about 20% cheaper than the two other bids I got and I can't imagine I would have been any happier with the more expensive tree company. One hiccup was they hit the water main, but they got it shut off and repaired it at no extra expense to me so no harm no foul. I have a very, very tall Cedar tree in my backyard. Periodic cutting of long limbs have prevented damage or injury from falling limbs for the 25 years. But recently, two very large limbs, cracked and fell down. Thankfully they were in the evening when with the chilly winds, everyone was inside. I called about 5 or 6 Tree Professionals using Yelp's pre-screened recommendations. Cal-Line's owner CEO Alejandro Ruvalcaba came perosnally described what and where he would cut and why. The tree was healthy and solidy rooted, he assured me. He pointed out the insides of the fallen limb were healthy wood. Disease was not the cause and thus there was no need to cut the entire tree down. It's a trim job, not a removal job. I appreciated his honesty as removal would have been a major and expensive project. Finally, he quoted a very fair price, based on the 5 or so quote I got. More importantly, he could start the job 8AM the next. This in mind was an emergency. A third falling limb - we may not be so lucky. Alejandro explained that the change and increased risk is the result of the recent weather changes the past few years, including stronger and more winds and the new "river rain storms" or "Pineapple Expresses" new to the Bay area. Another tree service said the same thing. Overly, they have greatly stressed trees everywhere and lessened their stability. He struck me as very well informed about trees in general and climate change's impact on stability. Another Tree Service gave me the same explanation, but they could not start until a week later. Also, their quote was significantly higher. More important again, this being an emergency, Cal-Line could start work 8 AM the next day. They arrived on-time. Mr. Ruvalcaba later talked to my neighbor with whom I share a fence. She and her husband had a few concerns about safety on their side from the tree limbs straddling our property line. After some discussion, we scheduled another job for Monday morning and trimmed those. Those did not posed much of a risk as they were much thinner branches and did not extend far out. But after this unexpected drop, I decided "better safe than sorry." Anyway, the Cal-Line crew completed the job & removed all plant debris each day before leaving. The crew are all professional, efficient, and respectful. There's a comraderie group photo of them on the website. You can see photos of a variety of trucks and equipment for any size job. Within five minutes after I posted this project on Yelp, Alejandro contacted me with an offer to view the acacia tree that had grown to monstrous height and width and was dangerously overhanging our neighbors' yards and roofs. After a thorough inspection, he provided a very reasonable verbal quote, and followed up just a few minutes later with a detailed written quote conveniently texted to my phone. He also texted me his active contractor's license and certificate of liability insurance. I accepted the quote and we made an appointment for two days later. Alejandro was happy to adjust his suggested time to my schedule, and his crew showed up on time and ready to roll. To be honest, I was fearful of this project, having had a horrific experience a few years ago with a large tree that blew down in a storm. But my fears were totally unfounded: The Cal-Line team completed the entire project quickly, smoothly and professionally. They took great care to control the fallout from branches and trunk segments, using ropes to ensure that nothing fell outside of our own property or on any areas or surfaces that could cause damage. The crew efficiently cleared the debris away as it fell, piling it neatly in front of the house, next to their parked wood chipper. Although his foreman was perfectly capable and experienced, Alejandro himself took the trouble to show up about halfway through the project, just to make sure things were running well. Most recently they did a small job for me pruning some over grown maples. I was putting off that work because the last folks I had trim them completely ruined the shape. He was very sincere said that he will talk to his crew about what occurred to not have it happen again in the future. ######## I reached out to this company twice via their website contact form about an issue that I had with them at my home and they never responded. This company removed two trees from my neighbor's property on the side that faces my property. I was home all morning but no one came to ring my door bell or talk to me before the work started. I was only alerted to the work when I heard their workers walking on MY roof and saw them dropping tree limbs onto MY garage roof and then dragging them along the roof and throwing them onto the sidewalk in front of my house. The truck said "Cal-Line Tree Care" "LIC.#1091502." This is extremely unprofessional. You do not work on someone's property, let alone go on their roof, without asking permission first. I went outside and told them that this roof was brand-new and to please not drop things onto it or drag tree limbs across it. It didn't seem to change how they were working. They were working extremely fast, without much care for my property. After they left, I discovered that they dented one of my gutters, they also scratched the new paint job on my home and my detached garage from dropping tree limbs against it, and they left a mess on my roof, all of which I had to clean up. read more

Requested they do stump grinding from recent demo and yard work. Slightly more expensive service than the absolute lowest quote I got, but given my happy review from March, I was happy to go with them, knowing the quality of their work. They removed one large stump that had largely dry rotted out after being covered by a building for 40 years, but used a grinding machine that was about the size of one of those stand up rider mowers (one big engine on tracks with a gnarly looking articulated circular saw sort of head) to get the two newer stumps and some collections of stumps left over from some shrub removals. For large stumps, the machine and operator also removed the big roots showing at the surface. The process left a mixture of dirt and sawdust. read more
