One of the Hyde Park favorites! They always have great food/brunch options and the events going on upstairs are always great choices too. Sometimes they'll have a comedy show or jazz music going on so it's definitely worth a try to see what's happening the day you decide to hit up The Promontory. The drinks were OK but I'm also not a huge drinker and the atmosphere is very grown and sexy. During nicer seasons, you can either eat outside on the deck but beware that you may smell the smoke from the smokers downstairs. Great atmosphere overall. read more

I've been to the Promontory 4 times. The first time, during restaurant week in 2015, the pappardelle was to die for. The service was excellent. The second time, similarly, the beef tartare was remarkable and the server was thoughtful, humorous, and helpful. The third time, during Restaurant Week 2016, service was mediocre and the food was alright, although not worth that price point. The most recent time, this past February, the food was doing that thing where the portion was tiny, which happens a lot in fancy restaurants, but this time, the portion was tiny and the taste didn't at all make up for the size of the portion. It was paying to taste a tiny bite of incredibly boring food. I had: smoked feta (which failed to straddle the line between burnt and smoked and jumped straight to burnt), calamari (for which our chef kindly bequeathed on us three little squid legs and a whole lot of crisped onion), and cavatelli (the sauce overpowered whatever else was thrown in there). The real problem was the inattentive server, for whom it seemed an exceptional chore to be fetching our check or refilling our glasses. Meals at restaurants of this caliber should be orchestrated- the server brings one dish after another. This was more of a open mic. She brought us food when she decided she wanted to. read more

My boyfriend and I ate at The Promontory for our one year anniversary and were both amazed by the service of our server Moises, as well as the front of house and the restaurant manager (I believe his name is Anthony?). Additionally, Chef Carlos made AMAZING food. I live in the northern border of Hyde Park, so it's no wonder I frequent the area. I've been to the bar at the promontory multiple times, but only for drinks. First, the bartender was great. She was alone behind a full bar and held her own. She even prepared one of my favorite drinks to perfection, without having all the ingredients. It goes downhill from here.... I ordered the "calamari". It's in quotes because the word "calamari implies plural and I don't believe I was served the equivalent of two calamarum (no typo). The $16 appetizer was...sparse. The rest of my meal, wings and short ribs (separate dishes) came almost a half hour after the "calamarum". I came for a concert and the food took so long to get there I had to take it to go. The Promontory is one of the best things to happen to Hyde Park and I wish Hyde Parkers would stop trying to ruin it. This is why we can't have nice things. The food is hands down some of the most delicious and innovative that HP has ever seen in my 30 years in the neighborhood. The cocktail menu is creative and delicious, the wine list is extensive but still approachable, and they carry tons of local beers. Not to mention they have one of the best patios I've eaten on in a long time - it's covered, so it can still be used in inclement weather, and it's more secluded than a patio that's right smack dab in the middle of 53rd street. The music venue upstairs is intimate enough for an acoustic show but still large enough for a super fun hip hop show. I live literally one block away and I am NEVER bothered by late night sounds from the venue. Remember when HP was a cultural and culinary dead zone? Because I certainly do. Stop complaining about a music venue being "too loud." Stop complaining about the prices and portion sizes of hands down the nicest restaurant in Hyde Park. You have every opportunity to look at the menu before you sit down and eat, it is posted on the window of the restaurant. If you don't want to pay that price, go to the Salonica. If you don't want to listen to classic vinyl while you eat, again, the soups and spinach pie at the Salonica are excellent. If you have a problem with your service, speak to the manager. Stop playing keyboard commando and taking your complaints to the Internet, like a bunch of insolent children. Nine times out of ten, if you have a problem with your experience, a restaurant manager will do what they can to make it better. That's their job. As customers (and as human beings) its our jobs to treat others with respect and not be douches. If you don't want to eat the delicious and creative menu items, go somewhere else. If you don't want to pay the listed prices, go to a cheaper place. If you don't want to tip, don't go out to eat. Hyde Park deserves to be a destination that people GO TO to have a good time, not a place that people ACTIVELY VACATE in order to have a good time. Last year I used to go to the Promontory every weekend for brunch. They have a fantastic menu and a great ambiance. However, I started to frequent the place less now because the level of service has dropped significantly. A few weeks ago, I went for brunch on a Saturday. My girlfriend and I were seated at a table and we waited for a few minutes until we were brought water. Then we waited for ten full minutes before we were even greeted by a server. At that point we had already had a lengthy conversation about how it is a shame that such a nice place, a venue that Hyde Park can be proud of, was so inattentive to its patrons. I admit, Saturday brunch is busy but it would only take the server a few seconds to introduce herself and provide us with the reassurance that she will be back soon. A quick, simple reminder that someone is taking care of us is all it takes to keep us engaged with the meal. We returned to the Promontory last night for a late night snack and desert. Again we sat for another ten minutes before anyone even came to fill our glasses with water! Another waitress came and asked us if we had been helped, to which we sullenly replied, "no..." She said she was not our server but she would take our orders. We ordered the chocolate tart cake (excellent!) and the calamari. It should be noted that the calamari is an utter rip off, as stated in previous reviews here. I may be able to look past the $16 dollars for two fried squid legs if I wasn't so frustrated with the neglectful nonchalance of the service. For the second visit in a row, we were not greeted by the server, we waited for ten minutes (easily enough time to contemplate leaving), and our server did not even bother to check in with us perhaps because she felt she lost the tip on the table. The Promontory could be such an excellent place. It pains me to speak ill of it, but clearly my two back-to-back negative service experiences, along with similar complaints on this site, are substantial enough to point to a serious issue in how management hires and trains its servers. The managers of the Promontory run one of the coolest mixed-use venues in Chicago, but I highly recommend that they address the restaurant service problems. I'm not sure what kind of system they have in place, but I think something as simple as allowing servers to keep their own tips and assigning them zones can provide enough incentive and direction to keep the servers on top of their tables. read more

We went on a slow Tuesday with a party of three. Our waiter came over once before the main dishes came out. (To greet us and take our order.) We did not have 1 of our appetizers come over, and then the waiter came over at the very end to see how our meal was going. They offered to give one of us a free mixed drink and to bring over the second appetizer at the end of the meal. Despite the very delicious food, it was a futile effort because the service left a bad taste in all our mouths. We were considering hosting an event in their space upstairs, but we didn't even ask to see the space after this experience. So normally I am very Pro-Promontory but today not so much. Today I ordered the burger and substituted the fries for the brussel sprouts. For my drink I had the Whiskey Cola. Pros: The service, as always is pretty awesome. We were seated immediately on a bustling Friday evening and my server Jillian was beyond thorough and she was extremely sweet. The food was hot and the drink, the Whiskey Cola, was beyond delicious. It was strong and the cloves added the right amount of spice. Cons: The brussel sprouts were not good at all. For some odd reason, sour apples were added to them and that did nothing for the flavor. When roasted, brussel sprouts are solid and pretty perfect and require very little accompaniments. Usually you will see bacon, but the apple was definitely a weird additive. The burger left much to be desired. My medium rare burger was pretty much well done and the brioche bun was pretty dry. My husband's medium well was fully well-done and not juicy at all. His fries were pretty much burnt to a crisp and barely edible. I gave such a bad rating because I expect better from this establishment. Hell I have had better from this establishment. I will chalk this up to a bad night but I am hopeful that my neighborhood favorite will get it together next time. read more

I've been to Promontory several times and I keep wanting to like it because it's generally a decent looking crowd. Overall, I'd give it a 2.25 but have to round down. The food is okay but not for the prices, service is almost comically sloooooww and hostesses always seem kind of miserable. In any case, the event space upstairs is cool and worth the trip. A drink at the bar downstairs can be cool if you're not in a hurry because the space can be nice (just order a double shot because they make them weak). Skip the food. read more

To Whom it May Concern, I am highly disappointed with the promoters and the owners of this establishment that allowed for the false advertisement of celebrity performers to come to the venue to host an event, and upon extreme late arrival of the celebrity, they appear unaware of the expectation to perform. This has happened twice to me- once with Tweet and then tonight with DVSN. It's offensive and downright disrespectful to hear them say they only came here for bottle service and to say hello! I would really like a refund for the two tickets I purchased. I left without the promised experience I paid for. This is the second time. I did not come to hear any new up and coming Chicago artist and to hear music I could have listened to on the radio. I feel taken advantage of for the second time and this time I would like to be reimbursed for this terrible inconvenience. Ok. If I reviewed this place after my first visit it would be five enormous stars. Unfortunately, I returned with super high expectations. The first time I had the country benedict and shared the beignets. Excellent! The benedict was so full of flavor, piping hot, plated nicely - the potatoes were outstanding. Seriously - they were a huge reason for wanting to return. So good! The beignets were hot, fluffy, steamy and lemony. So much goodness. Today it fell to the disappointing side of things. The beignets were luke warm, too dark and too dense. The lemon was without a fresh zingy quality - mildly bitter instead. They were edible and ok, just disappointing given my first experience. I opted for the fried oyster benedict this time and asked if THE potatoes were included, they weren't. I ordered a side, of course! Food came out and looked promising - though, plated different than expected. Sadly, taste wise, it just left a lot to be desired for not only me, my dining companion, too. My fried oysters were not cooked - which fine, I like raw oysters so I wasn't freaked out. I just wasn't expecting fried oysters to be raw inside. Maybe it was wrong of me to assume they'd be cooked throughout. The dish comes with a side of very bitter lettuce and lightly dressed with a bitter vinaigrette. Also, wilted. For $17 - I don't want wilted bitter lettuce, I want THE potatoes. Speaking of which, they we're also disappointing and at that point - frustrating. Everything was edible, overall quality of ingredients was not an issue. The idea of complaining to our wonderful and attentive server just didn't seem like the right thing at the time. I should have, I know it would have been the right thing to do. I'm just not sure if we got lucky the first visit or if this trip was a fluke. I want to say I'd give Promontory another chance - but I'd rather spend my money on good, solid consistency. I have been here 4-5 times in the past 2 years but only manage to write my first review. I would general say that this is a prime spot for some mid to upscale dining in Hyde Park. I always enjoy the drinks more than the food. The service has been great for all my visits. Although they say that they update the menu seasonally, many of the dishes are pretty much the same in the past two years with no or slight modification. Therefore, I would say the food is going downhill since it got a bit of repetitive. Price is very reasonable for the quality of food, drink, and services; however, I can understand why many will think this place is overpriced. read more

The restaurant is very nicely designed, half indoor seating - half outdoor seating. I suspect they don't reserve the outside tables as they were all full when we left and the interior wasn't very busy. So even if you can't get a reservation, chances are there's a table. The restaurant music is too loud for my taste, even on the patio. We had a 6 o'clock reservation because it was booked up later. When we arrived, they were going to seat the four of us inside without asking our preference, We wanted to sit on the patio which had lots of two tops open, but no four top. The hostess appeared inconvenienced by this request - it's hard to push two tables together, you know. This hostess was anything but welcoming. The menu is hard to describe - I guess I would call it ambitious bar food. The selection lacks cohesion, and nothing instantly appeals. Spaghetti and meatballs are offered along side a lamb burger and charcuterie... But we tried a bunch of the stuff, ordering liberally. I was underwhelmed with almost everything except the souffle. The cocktails were economical at $10 but certainly not up to the mixologist standard which is now fairly common. It was a tough meal to digest for three of us. The wine sommelier did suggest an awesome red, however. Finally, we went with a couple of booze light weights. I didn't want to split the check because the bulk of the bill was going to be mine. We asked for separate checks, and the request was refused, which was kind of ironic since they pushed two tables together to seat us. The waitress said it could be split by what we ordered, but that ended up meaning we had to do it ourselves - and the check font was minuscule. Now my friends think I'm a cheap drunk. Hyde Park is a tough sell for a lot of people, even to its own residents who tend to be... thrifty. There just isn't a compelling reason for locals to patronize Promontory regularly, or for North Siders to make the trek -- and that's what's going to close it. read more

We hit up the Promontory last week for dinner. It was recommended to us, and despite the ambiance being listed as "hipster", we decided to give it a try. You see, we're all about the food, and while atmosphere is important, if the food sucks, the place isn't going to fly. I would give this place zero to one stars based strictly on the food, but the service was good and it had a nice aesthetic, so I had to give an extra star. That being said, I wouldn't waste your time. As far as the food, we started with a few apps: zucchini croquettes, chicken liver mousse, and the short ribs. The croquettes were greasy on the outside, mushy on the inside, and had no hint of zucchini flavor. The liver mousse was good, although it was served with one tiny English muffin, so we had to have the server bring more. Don't even get me started on the short ribs. They were as tough as Jack Link's beef jerky, so much so, I expected Sasquatch to come out of the kitchen to punk me. The server told us they were supposed to be tough like that, because they're marinated in pineapple juice. If that's true, I would lose even more respect for the place. I just think they were poorly prepared. Short ribs should be as tender as a Gordon Lightfoot song. Our entrees were the following: Brunswick stew, English pea risotto, and an Asian-inspired pork dish with bok choy and mini steamed buns. The duck in the stew was way over cooked and the Lima beans were hard. Flavor of the dish wasn't bad, but overall a big disappointment. The risotto dish was pathetically small and the rice was hard and sticky. Not firm, hard. Brutal. The pork dish was lacking in flavor and the mini-buns were hard, dense, and dry. Literally inedible. The drinks drew mixed reviews at the table, but props for creativity. If we were visiting for just cocktails, I would give the place three stars. However, as a restaurant, it's all show. They try to be creative with the dishes, but it's a fail. If they were serving this to someone like Gordon Ramsey, he'd kick them out of the kitchen, not to mention spit out his food. Remember, it's all about the food, and if it's not prepared well, it's not worth it. Unless you're a hipster, I guess. Promontory is dead to me. read more

Hyde Park, rejoice! The Promontory fills the neighborhood's cocktail bar-music venue-trendy restaurant void. I wish this place was around when I lived in Hyde Park! The Promontory's vibe is similar to the industrial-chic restaurants of the West Loop, with a gorgeous, large, and stylishly rustic space! The ground floor is a restaurant and bar space with an open kitchen. There is also a nice outdoor patio for the warm months. Upstairs is a bar and music venue (which offers a UofC student discount--hint, hint). The clientele it draws are diverse: you can find students, hip young professionals, and suited business people here. Cocktails here are delicious, but expensive. Food here is good, and uses trendy ingredients and presentations (i.e. deconstructed baked Alaska, chickpea fries, lamb burgers, etc.). However, the dishes lack a bit on taste and portion size compared to other restaurants in its price range. One huge drawback about The Promontory is how difficult it is to reach. While its got a great position in Hyde Park, it's a pain to get to from elsewhere in the city via a direct public transit route. Your best bets are the 6 bus or the Metra. And although it's fairly easy to access via Lake Shore Drive, parking in this crowded area is also very difficult. My conclusion: this is great bar and music venue for Hyde Park locals, but could use improvements on their food if they really want to lure in residents of the rest of the city. read more

I had the Braised Pork and Fried Clam Po Boy and I was not disappointed, the BBQ remoulade and fermented cabbage slaw really create an amazing flavor. Came here for a concert and I was really impressed. It definitely reminded me of City Winery, SPACE, and Thalia Hall. The food and drink prices definitely reminded me of that. If City Winery is the mature aunt of SPACE, then The Promontory is the cool uncle. I really liked the lighting fixtures in the performance area, and the ceiling in the bathroom was really nice. (It's the weird little things that I notice.) The sound was good, once the show started. Standing room only is a little awkward due to the bar's location, but if you get there early enough you should be able to snag a good spot. The sound wasn't as great as the aforementioned venue, but I was still pretty happy with my experience. On the bottom floor is the restaurant and a bar, and upstairs is a night club (I think on Saturday nights they call it "Promontory after dark" - or at least that's what I was told by another patron). As for the restaurant on the first floor: - nice and classy. - cute little diverse crowd. - cute ambiance for a first date (lots of low lighting) - I didn't try the food; I only sat at the bar waiting for the club upstairs to open. - packed on Saturday nights. As for the NIGHTCLUB: - Crowd: primarily (almost exclusively) black. - Music: exclusively urban (I.e. Rap and hip hop, reggae, etc.) - Drinks: meh. I asked for a stoli cape cod and the bartender gal didn't even know what I was talking about (never mind the fact that I'd just ordered the same drink from another bartender gal downstairs). Hood bartenders; I'll tell ya. I rephrased to "stoli and cran." She said they didn't have Stoli so I let her sub with Ketel One. Notwithstanding the simplicity of the drink, it was weak af. - Ambiance: yikes. Within 30 minutes of opening the place was packed, WALL TO WALL. You could not turn around without bumping into someone. Lots of yelling to talk to your peeps over the music. Bodies pumping. Sweat dripping off of the huskier guys. Gross. Typical club stuff. Not my favorite scene, at all, but I was being an open minded trooper that night. It also seemed that the later it got the younger the crowd got. - Food: There's no food upstairs - only drinks. I visited Promontory for dinner-July 13th 2017, around 6-7:00 pm. The services was good and usually the food is great except this time it came was some unexpected nose mucus- let me explain. My date and I were seated at the chefs counter which gave us line of sight of the kitchen and the chefs as they worked. As a watched my food go through its final preparation by the head chef- I watched in complete surprise and discussed as he wiped his noes with his bare-hand then grabbed the garnish with the same hand and placed on my plate. (I had the short ribs). To make matters worse when I politely complained which resulted in the manager on duty asking the head chef to wash his hands- he rudely refused and kept cooking. What happened?!?! This place used to be so great. About a year ago I noticed it going downhill with an untrained staff resulting in poor service. One night we received 3 out of 4 of our dinners. The 4th one came 15 minutes after everyone else ate. I cared so much about this place I spoke with the manager so he could fix the problems. He was uninterested and replied with "I took it off your bill. Will that make you happy?" I wanted this place to be as awesome as it looks. Over the last year I have taken 3 rounds of out of town guests. Each time I am embarrassed. This last time did it for me. Two out of six of our dinners were 10 minutes later than everyone else's and one dinner was incorrect. The salmon was one of the smallest pieces I have ever seen for a dinner. We asked about a wine and told "it was a red one." The burger is smaller than it used to be two years ago, the menu keeps getting smaller and the revolving door of waiters/bartenders are still untrained. I cannot give this restaurant any more chances. The upstairs venue is a great spot and we would go there for events but I would stop and get drinks somewhere else. The outdoor seating is fantastic but the service is usually so bad it ruins it. Luckily, Hyde Park has opened some new restaurants so I have options. read more

I came in and wanted a draft beer, but was informed by the server that they were somehow out of CO2 (which thus precluded any of the sparkling cocktails; this is a BAR, right?) Instead of apologizing, he made fun of my desire to have a beer by saying that the cocktails were better anyway. OK? So, I see that the cocktails are all around $10, but I don't see anything I fancy. As a result, I ordered a simple gin martini. The drink I got was noticeably watered down, as if it had been left with ice in it for too long or something. Making matters worse, I was charged over $15 dollars for a cocktail with 2 ingredients and some nasty olives attached. Hyde Park deserves better than these overpriced, overly complicated places that can't even do the simple things right. Needless to say, I didn't try the food. One positive: the hearth (oh yeah, you will be reminded of it A LOT) makes the restaurant smell like camping out with a perfect fire. No a huge deal as I know an extreme food, although serving food at the right temperature should be a "no-brainer" for a restaurant. My biggest issue is service. There's is spotty. Hostesses are meh and the bartenders are indifferent most of the time. I have only had one really good server. The others were mediocre at best. One server petite (with mousy blonde and punk earring in her ear) barely had knowledge of the menu and such a sour puss face, I thought she has a tummy ache and she looks like that when I have seen her in passing during another visit to the place. She's just unhappy and does not need to be customer facing. I guess you wonder what I go. I go with hopes that they will train their staff to be customer service oriented which is as important as good food. While I am writing a letter to the GM today and using some the verbiage above. People have too many option to settle for sub-par service at Hyde Park's new shiny object. I say try it but don't expect much as far as service. May your food will be warm. read more

Great for a casual date night or drinks with friends. Four stars for the chill ambiance, friendly service, outdoor dining, excellent mocktails (Rose and Rind & Livin' Easy), and dessert (Key Lime Pie with amazing crust). Small plates and entrees were mixed - but mostly three to four stars as well. Would recommend the Pea Risotto (ultra creamy) and the Kalbi Short Ribs (garlicky sweet). The Farm Chicken was tasty, but seemed to be missing the promised gnocchi; the Agnolotti were tender, but rest of the dish was meh. Would still come back to try other items on the menu. read more

It was a glorious night, the sort you feature in a movie- everyone dressed magnificently, ready to relax, have fun and enjoy an inspired show. I recommend a table if possible- and please take time to peruse the drink options should you take a moment from pretty people watching while in line. read more

"Why Do So Many Good Restaurants Come to Hyde Park After We Graduate", a story by every University of Chicago alum ever. The Promontory was opening its doors right around when I finished my undergrad at UChicago in 2014, so I was equally excited that it existed and bummed that it hadn't opened earlier in my college career. I've been there twice now - once for dinner and once for brunch - and have really enjoyed the food both times. For dinner, I highly recommend the pork and fried clam po'boy - huge portion and the pork and clams are amazing (and I never would have thought that they would work together as well as they do). For brunch, I had the French toast. I don't usually like French toast at some other brunch places because I feel like it's a little too heavy, but the Promontory did an amazing job with it - just the right portion size and not insanely sweet or rich. My friend had the Point breakfast (eggs, bacon, and whole-wheat toast) which looked delicious as well. Ambiance is really cool - industrial-looking accented with reclaimed wood - and it's a big, lively space. I haven't been here for any DJ sets or live music, but based on the signs posted around the restaurant it looks like that's one of their attractions. Definitely a good stop for dinner in Hyde Park - on the pricey side, but I think the food is well worth it. read more
