As long time visitors to downeast Maine we were so impressed by the Public House. The setting is perfect for a good meal, a beer, or just connecting with people. Crab dip, calamari, PEI oysters were excellent starters. Cocktails made brilliantly. And entrees were fantastic . I had the summer salad with steak and it was so good. This place is dope for Machias, which used to be best known when it came to food for the chicken finger special at Freshies. Super cool vibe, beautiful building, lovely area. They have a lot of steak offerings featuring local grass-fed beef that are priced about half as much as they would be in Portland, like a 16-ounce ribeye for 36 bucks. We went down home for the Machias ATV Jamboree (which was basically rained out!) and were told about The Public House. I am thrilled a restaurant of that quality has opened! The area needs it! The whole experience was excellent! I had a latte to start and it was very good expresso and perfectly creamy. The pan seared Haddock was one of the best I have had and the lemon-dill aioli was perfect with it! The whole meal was very well seasoned and delicious. My husband had the Queso special and really enjoyed it! We got a piece of Coconut Cloud Cake to go and it was SO moist and light, a great end to the evening! We decided to go back this morning for breakfast which was very good, though not many breakfast items to choose from. There was a Farmer's Breakfast (which my husband had), a Breakfast Burrito (which I had), a Blueberry French Toast, and Eggs Benedict. There were a few lunch items too. The coffee was again excellent, the sausage had good flavor, but was quite dry, it would benefit from a bit more fat in the mix. The homefries were very good as was the Burrito, very well seasoned. This was our go-to place for sumptuous meals, nice extra touches. Huge dining room. Lovely vistas. We were there for a family lunch at Easter, and it was very good. Not cheap, but good. We went this week and everything has changed. There used to be yummy baked chips with humus as appetizer while we read the menu. There were 2 mountains of steamed mussels that were enjoyed by everyone. We got oysters. Very good. Baked and breaded haddock on chefs salad. All these were missing when we went back this week. Waitress said they had changed their menu last month and it was disappointing. Salad greens were mixed with dressing hours before serving. They still offered a huge cup of very good coffee, but the rest was not up to the standards they set when they opened last year. We have visited a few times now and it's easily one of the best restaurants in Washington County. Most of our food was amazing, the location is gorgeous, albeit a bit out of the way, but definitely worth the trip. Our servers have been outstanding, extremely accommodating and well versed with their menu. If I had to pick apart our experience to find something negative to say, I would recommend to avoid the braised short rib mac and cheese dish as it was almost comically disproportionate to all the other plates on the table, appetizers included. only other note was that the prime rib and the calamari was a touch overcooked, but that didn't really take away from their flavors, only the texture. All in all, this restaurant is a gorgeous example of doing what you love well, and we will be back soon for sure! read more

Fantastic restaurant ,great chef I think it's one of the best in Maine . My husband Ordered the short rib and I had a phenomenal Seafood Alfredo, which is best I have ever had , lobster meat , big scallops, shrimps,and the crab meat all melted in the creamy sauce . Creamy but not heavy . I think it's excellent. I will be back for sure . The Bar area has great ambiance ,I get to try next time . The farm has great view of the river , like a painting . We were visiting for the weekend and loved it. It's a beautiful space and great views. The bees knees cocktail was fabulous, as were the Fish and Chips - the beer-battered Fish was so flavorful - and the carrot cake - to die for. The food was awesome. Had appetizers cheese curds, short rib egg rolls and salads all stupendous. Entrees...various steak cuts cooked to perfection and short rib combination. The views were delightful looking on the fall foliage. Service was quick and very pleasant. Will definitely be a yearly visit for a big family get together. If needed to critique the only slight negative is that my portion was smaller than others and that was by looking at other dining tables and comparing. Our family of four ate there 3 times of the four days we spent in Maine and every meal was better than the last and all were better than most places we've had in our travels.
