Don't surf anymore but sure wish I did. When the surfing craze hit in the 60's I was seriously into waterskiing. Well, not as romantic but then again I lived on a lake. So the years go by and now i live in some way through the activities of my daughters who are both athletic and enjoy all things water related. We live on the bay known as Pleasant in a small seaside village on Cape Cod. There I am talking to my good friend Michael who owns the Goose and I ask "who sells paddle boards?" His reply is quick and surprising....."just bought two for my girls and I will bring them by later after I finish this brew!" Wow here he comes in his truck and Molly is quick to grab the first board and takes to it. Kate's on it the next day and disappears down the bay. She's hooked. So on Mike's direction and good advice into the Pump House I go. I ask for the two owners Jamie and Matt who are knee deep in customers, t-shirts, sandals and bathing suits. Thank your lucky stars for a/c as it was 92 outside and this place is packed with all things beach, surf and a good time. Super professional are both Jamie and Matt. Deferring to each other when a question is better suited for the other. Quickly done and probably the fastest two paddle board sale of all time (Jungle boards if you need to know). In and out.....pick them up tomorrow. I'm feeling young again. The music inside, the posters, the bikinis the atmosphere have me wanting to fire up the "little deuce coupe!" But instead, I climb into the F350 which has the engine running with the a/c at full tilt and I flick to satellite Sirius radio to the 60's station trying to find some Jan and Dean! All your beach, surf and skate needs in on location. Used to go to the other surf shop across the street until I started to check out this place. Am continually amazed by how much stuff they pack in such a small store. They are always changing their inventory and work really hard to try to figure out what is "in" for the season. Matt and Jamie are great at remembering all their "regulars" names which makes you feel special. Their midnight madness sale in august Rocks!!! I love stopping by this shop. Super cool surf shop run by two really great guys. They have hired some great sales girls as well. I have attended a SUP clinic put on by these folks before but stopped in today for my first time. Top notch surf duds and boards. Killer selection of uber cute hats, bags, and clothing. I bought a cute pair of Teeki leggings and a Volcom dress today. Matt, the owner, is an amazingly nice guy and an authentic surf nomad. This is a must shop when in Orleans. Matt is always there and now along with his wife Jaime they run one of the best surf shops on the Cape. Whether you are looking for surf shorts, flip flops, your favorite surf brand's baseball cap or perhaps even a surfboard or surf lessons this is your destination. Wow - these guys (and gals) rock! Extremely friendly and very helpful. Rented a few SUPs and wet suits for my kids. The customer service is amazing and quick. Less than 10 minutes from the time I walked in until they had the boards strapped to the roof of my car. Paul (I think that's his name - Tufts student?) was great. The store is packed with a ton of gear......couldn't pull my kids out of the store. Quick tip - come in shortly before they close and rent whatever you need for the next day and they'll only charge you for one day. Saves time in the morning if you're an early riser. Oh, for comparison purposes, I trekked across the street to check out the competition. Not worth your time! Rude girl at the counter - sorry I asked you a question and you were so bothered. My wife and I went to the Cape to visit my parents and met with my sister nephew and Bro-in-law. We went to Pumphouse to get a couple stand up paddle boards (and all the sweatshirts). Matt and Jamie are both super knowledgeable about all the gear they sell and rent, and have literally got years of local insight between them. The staff on hand is just as quick to lend a hand and answer any questions you may have. A young man named Ben helped me load the boards and set us up with appropriate paddles etc with a smile on his face and made the rental even easier. I go to and from the Cape at least twice a season and have not once missed a chance to check in at Pumphouse. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time; got to Pumphouse for ALL your beach related needs! read more

Justin H... I appreciate your feedback. No doubt, the Pump House deserves some credit for being there as a surf shop on the cape. You are however incorrect in making the assumption that I do not own any surfboards, and therefore would not be a good judge of a surf shop. I own two boards. I just didn't have a board that day. I've been a surfer for 20 years and have a lot of experience out in the waves. So I think that I am probably an adequate judge of surf shops. So in reviewing the Pump House, I did review myself first, as you suggested. Internet poker? No, I don't play that either. I spend time at the beach whenever I can. It's not as often these days, but I enjoy a great swell just like any other surfer. The next day I was up in Rye, NH surfing the tail end of Hurricane Bill and it was sweet. I was even surfing with my own board that day. So, I absolutely stand by my review of the Pump House. Any *experienced* surfer who needs to rent a board on the cape during a tropical storm is much better served by the totally cool and accommodating folks north of the rotary. Furthermore, I really don't think that I am mis-directing others with my review. You're right, if you need some flip flops, or some surf trunks, then the Pump House is probably fine for that type of thing. But if you need to rent a board when the waves aren't flat, I still suggest that north of the rotary on route 6 is the place. Now, I am not a local, nor do I know the owners personally, I am just providing my opinion, and I stand by my review. read more

Not all it's cracked up to be!! Last week, we paid $300 for surf lessons for 4 people and we were supposed to have 2 instructors. Pump House's website said 1-2 people (per instructor). It has since been changed, hmmm. When we called to make the reservations, we confirmed that "Dave" and his "assistant" would be there for the 1-hr lesson. The beach was very crowded on the day of the lesson and we only got in the water for about 40 minutes with just one instructor. Dave was nice and knew what he was doing, but we did not get what we paid for. We would have gotten a lot more help surfing with 2 instructors rather than one. We called to discuss this with the Pump House and were really disappointed with their response. $300 is a lot of money to sit in shark-infested waters watching people try to surf! read more

Love this place! We've been shopping here for years. Their selection is smaller than some other local shops but always with more I can't resist getting. We bought our oldest son his first skateboard and helmet and the guys (and gals!) were super helpful and patient - even with our crew of little boys running around. Wanted to rent 2 stand-up paddle boards for the day. Came at 5:00pm and was told by the owner(wife) that next day rentals were not possible until 6:00pm and they would not accept a reservation but they currently had 3 available. Returned at 5:50pm and was told that all of the paddle boards were already rented for the next day by the owner (husband) and to come back at 9:00am tomorrow. The wife had no comment. Are you kidding me? WE WILL NEVER RETURN TO YOUR STORE. read more

Recently rented two SUP Boards for 9 days and would never go back. The owner (I believe) was incredibly rude upon returning the boards. When asking a question he told me to no longer speak. He nickle and dimed everything. We inspected one of the boards upon the rental and the other he said was okay and just loaded in my car. That was a mistake, the post inspection of the boards took over 30 minutes. My recommendation is to make sure that you complete a full inspection on the board speak up for every small mark because when you return the board he will bring it up and charge you for it! I would not return this shop because of the service quality and how rude the staff was when spending over $700. I would choose to support other local surf shops in the area. read more
