The only dentist I have known for the past 20 or so years is Doctor Charles Chen at the Radiant Smile dental office in Evanston. Although I live in Hyde Park, it has been worth the 40-minute drive to travel to his office. I was referred to Dr. Chen after having had some bad expeiences with local dental offices. Not only is Dr. Chen honest, but he has proven to be the most competent and affordable dental professional I have relied on since moving to Chicago from my old home in New York City some forty years ago. Dr Chen has been my dentist for well over 10 yrs and Ive never had a bad experience. I suffered severe toothpain near my gums near the last molars and he was quick to identify the problem even though this kind of discomfort can be caused by a number of problems but after a detailed process of elimination it was determined that the wisdom tooth had to come out and I was pain free. I would highly recommend the Radiant Smile and even though I dont live close by I still think its worth the drive anytime and the staff is wonderful. read more

I have to thank my friend for referring me to this dental practice ! I went to another office near my house for an emergency check up and they told me I had several cavities possible root canals. I'm a bit scared of dental procedures so my friend recommended me Dr. Chen. As soon as I called the front desk were able to get me in as an emergency appointment. They helped me check my insurance coverage ahead of time. Dr. Chen was so gentle I did not felt when I was being numbed. He showed me my x-rays and were the cavities where, he knew what he was talking about and how to help me save my teeth. Worst experience I've had at a dentist. I was a new patient and they asked me to have my X-rays sent over, which I did, six weeks before the appointment. Then I show up and, after keeping me waiting half an hour just to go inside, they claimed they had not received the X-rays. They had six weeks to let me know that these hadn't been received, but didn't do anything. Amazingly, the hygienist then said the dentist would not see me without the X-rays. They completely wasted my time, based on their mistake (even if the other practice did not send the x-rays, this office had plenty of time to follow up with me to make sure the X-rays were sent. The other practice confirmed with me that these were sent, of course.) I will definitely urge everyone I know to avoid this office. The fact that the total lack of concern for patients shown by both the office staff and the dentist was revealed so early makes me almost thankful, because they won't have the opportunity to treat me and my family. I tried to be a new patient. Showed up for my first appointment, but they hadn't gotten my X-rays. I didn't want to take unecessary additional X-rays, so I tried to make another appointment. Called four times over the course of a week before the front desk staff got back to me. Front desk told me that Dr. Chen would not give me an appointment for a cleaning or a general exam because he said he "wasn't qualified" to do unspecified future work I might need beyond a cleaning and a general exam. Dr. Chen declined to communicate with me directly. The receptionist ended the conversation by saying "I've said what I'm supposed to say. He said to tell you he's not qualified and you should go back to the dentist who did your previous work." I would, except I moved recently so that's not a possibility. Further, I would argue that if you are a dentist who tells your front desk staff to tell potential patients that you aren't qualified to do a general cleaning and are not able to refer someone to specialists as needed, you are not a good dentist. read more

I really loved The Radiant Smile until recently. I asked how much a night guard would be and the admin contacted insurance and told me I would have a $60 copay. I paid the $60, got the night guard and thought all was well. Then The Radiant Smile sends me a bill for $300 saying that insurance wouldn't pay. I called the insurance and we have had several conversations. They said they told the admin that unless I had previous perio surgery, the night guard would not be covered. The Radiant Smile never said any thing about that to me. I called to make a cleaning appointment a month ago and they said that was not allowed because I have a balance of $300 (that I will continue to refuse to pay). They said they would call me to figure this out and they never called. Really? That is how you might get treated so beware. I now need to find a new dentist and I really liked Dr. B. read more

I found Radiant Smile via my insurance network- as I had sudden and intense molar pain over the holiday weekend. This office actually has implemented a "text" service during their closed hours - and I was able to make an appt in less than 24 hours for a consultation and treatment the following day (unheard of and excellent service!) Dr. Chen is relatable, knowledgable, and also showed me that he found a fracture in my tooth (which was not easily identified on x-ray)-and was able to spend over an hour on phase 1 of a root canal. The procedure was painless - as he's very aware of someone being properly medicated and 100% comfortable. I'm home today with far less pain, a treatment plan, and the confidence in Dr. Chen and his amazing team moving forward. I am so happy and grateful to Dr. Basko and her entire staff for taking such good care of my teeth. Found this place out of convenience in an emergency, and I am SO HAPPY that I did. The setting: Evanston, a warm Friday evening in September 2017. The scene: I, an incorrigible nailbiter, have somehow managed to lodge a piece of my nail in my gums, behind my molar. Terrible, terrible pain. After flossing, attempting field surgery in a public restroom with a pair of tweezers (not recommended), and having a mild mental breakdown, I collect myself and search for nearby dentists with emergency hours. Radiant Smile were the first ones who were available that day and took my insurance. Dr. Xheni Basko was knowledgeable, understanding, and kind. I've since gone back a couple times and she has always very clearly explained what's been going on with my mouth. The hygenists are also really friendly and professional! I'm so happy to have found my new dentist in Evanston! This is a smaller office, with a very friendly staff. Everything ran on time, and Dr. Basko was friendly and knowledgeable. She took her time to explain her recommendations and seems to really care about patient health. I have a long-term issue (missing molar that never grew in, which causes some larger issues) and she even came up with possible solutions that other dentists in the past hadn't thought of. My only complaint was that the assistant who took the x-rays was a little rough... maybe like she was somewhat rushed? She felt bad about it though and seemed to be doing her best. What I loved most is the hours - I was able to schedule an appointment only a week away from when I called, and they were able to fit me in on a Wednesday after work. I've been seeing Dr Chen for a few years now, for everything from routine checkups to a root canal and a wisdom tooth extraction. Believe me, I wouldn't keep going back if I didn't believe that I was in good hands. I came to Radiant Smile after several years without a dentist after being brutalized by someone whom, in my recollection, I liken to the back-alley plastic surgeon who operated on Jack Napier after he fell into the acid at Axis Chemicals in the 1989 Batman movie. Anyway, I was traumatized and afraid to go to another dentist for all those years. So I owe Dr Chen a debt of gratitude for showing a big baby in his mid-thirties that you don't have to be skeered of the dentist. Not to mention for a much healthier mouth. The quality of care is good. Dr Chen is pretty low-key, optimistic but honest. He also works very quickly without sacrificing gentleness. He makes recommendations but the respects the patient's choices. I appreciate that he takes a moment to explain what to expect before, during, and after. After a few visits, I realized that no matter what procedure we were doing, the expectation in my mind was always ten times worse than the reality. So after that point, I trust him to do anything in there. He's really the best all-around dentist that I can recall seeing. The technicians are good too. Both they and the front desk staff are pretty nice. Once they have your insurance info, if the doctor recommends some work, they will give you an estimate on the spot of which portion will be covered and what costs will come out of pocket. Invariably the estimate is bang-on. You can request an appointment by email and their response is pretty prompt. However, the lead time to get an appointment can be over a month. read more

Receptionist wasn't friendly at all. The tech took x-rays and told me the dentist would be right with me. Thirty-five minutes later, I was still sitting there waiting. I almost left. Then the dentist showed up and either didn't know or acknowledge that I was sitting there forever. To top it off, it was one of the roughest cleanings I've ever gotten and that's from someone who has very health teeth and gums. I've been going to Dr. Chen for years and have always been pleased with his rational and conservative approach (offering many options for dealing with my teeth, which are problematic after decades in my youth of grinding without a night guard). I came here after looking at dentist reviews on Yelp, because I hate my dentist at home in St. Charles and wanted to try someone out here. I'm not going to bother raving about the sleekness of the office, the flat screen xray monitor in front of the chair, etc, because it's already been mentioned so many times and I don't like to be redundant. I will say that Dr. Chen (not sure what his first name is - he's the younger of the two Chen dentists) is very nice. The service is very personal there - they only had one hygienist working (and a student) and Dr. Chen, and so they were all focusing on me - Dr. Chen actually did my cleaning too, which I have never seen a dentist do the cleaning personally. Minus one star only because the cleaning actually hurt a bit - he seemed a little overzealous in scraping the plaque off my teeth, and it hurt when I brushed my teeth that night. However, it's probably my own fault because I haven't had a cleaning in almost 2 years. I'd definitely recommend him to a friend. Added bonus: they take off $50 if you don't have dental insurance. I got a cleaning, full set of xrays, exam, and a toothbrush and floss for $157. Not too bad considering what I've seen quoted at other places. read more

Yesterday I had to remove my wisdom teeth. It was a little surgery to remove 2 teeth. Doctor Chen was super professional and multitasking. He was working and calming me from crying at the same time! He is so good! I am writing this review not for professionals working inside but about the first person you meet at the office-the front desk girl. She looked Disheveled.... after I payed I had my prescription for 2 different medications and asked her to send it to my pharmacy. She was supposed to fax it to my pharmacy. When I came to pharmacy the prescription was ready but when I took it, it was only one medication... only one And when I tolled it is supposed to be 2 pharmacist tolled me that they received only one. I was so disappointed I went back home, because I was tired and in pain and I was waiting to my full prescription for 2 more hours! I was in pain. You know it hurts a lot. That girl should know it. I actually started going to the Radiant Smile after seeing their good reviews on Yelp. One of the main things I like about them is that they have Saturday appointments all day! My appointment yesterday was actually at 4:15pm. I see Dr. Chen, and he is absolutely awesome. He always takes the time to sit down and tell me exactly what he's going to do and exactly what to expect. I had a root canal yesterday, and he warned me right before he started drilling that it might start to hurt a little in five minutes or so, and that if it did to let him know and he'd give me more numbing drugs. Sure enough, he was spot on! I was given more drugs and didn't feel anything for the rest of the procedure. Who knew a root canal could be painless? The facility is state of the art - your x-rays appear on a huge flat-screen monitor mounted on the wall, and they'll put a camera in your mouth so you can see what he's doing if you want! (No, I did not opt for this during my root canal - blech!) The office staff and hygenists are all fantastic as well. You can tell they enjoy working there and are always very friendly. I've never had to wait here - I even got a call at 3:30 that they were running ahead of schedule and I could come in whenever I like and they'd start my procedure early! Wow. I'm not sure where all these positive reviews are coming from, but I absolutely hated my experience at the Radiant Smile. Dr. Chen was brief and rude. My routine teeth cleaning was painful. He was not gentle at all, he hit my gums directly and hard (even after I told him they were sensitive), and my mouth was a bloody, sore mess afterward. When he asked me if I was okay and I said that it was painful and uncomfortable, he looked me straight in the eye and said "Well, you survived". Thankfully it was easy to transfer my records and xrays to a new dentist. read more

I found Dr. Chen after an extensive search for a new dentist and consultation with my sister who is a dental assistant and knows what to look for on a website for indicators of a good dentist. Dr. Chen is at the forefront of technology, which you can tell by his website and his office. I've never had a quicker and easier cleaning, and some of that was the equipment they use. I then needed a crown replaced which is not fun. All staff were amiable, patient, and understanding. They have great communication and I felt absolutely safe under their care. I didn't experience any pain and the whole process went so smooth. Dr. Chen is an all-star and I feel fortunate to have found him. I have had to wait a little at the office, but in my opinion he is worth the wait. And no, no goody bags or new patient kits - but do you really need them? I got a pizza cutter once from a dentist. UPDATE: Now that I've been to the office I can say that The Radiant Smile has its ducks in a row. The office is pretty slick--maybe even chic. Two highlights of the setting: First of all, there was an impressive array of magazines in the waiting area. I was expecting Golf Digest and Highlights for the kiddies but I thumbed through the pages of Gourmet, National Geographic, Men's Health, Ebony (Problem?), and, the holy grail of waiting room magazines, Smithsonian. Read about the problems facing the preservation of the Casbah section of Algiers. Riveting stuff. Second, as I'm walking back to get my teeth cleaned I noticed a piano. A piano? In the dentist's office? Turns out Dr. Chen is an amateur musician. Not sure when he plays but it was an interesting quirk to see a piano in the office. As for the dramatis personae, everyone in the office was congenial and helpful. Dr. Chen and the hygienist that worked with me were on the level, and I was happy with the work they did. They took the time to explain everything they were doing, made sure I was comfortable with all the stuff they stuck in my mouth, and Dr. Chen even confused me for British. Lucky for him I'm an Anglophile so that type of mistake nets extra points. Not sure how the price compares to other dentists. From what little investigation I did I can tell you that the price for crowns is comparable to what at least one other dentist charges. Maybe they're in kahoots and I picked the wrong two dentists to compare by happenstance. I doubt it though. read more

After getting a new job with good dental insurance and making the decision to quit smoking, I decided it was time to properly fix a front tooth that had been bonded numerous times throughout my life. After reading the reviews on yelp and realizing that Dr. Chen was a stones throw away from my office, I decided to give him a shot. I have to say, I was not disappointed. The staff is friendly, the office is clean and modern and my appointments were always on schedule. My front teeth repairs were completed over 4 appointments. Dr. Chen was very friendly, discussed all of my options with me regarding the repairs, explained everything to me in detail, made the work as painless as possible (which is important for a wuss like me) and was just as excited about the end result as I was. My smile has never looked better and I am not super self conscious about my teeth anymore. Minus a star for availability. I didn't have a hard time getting appointments, because I could go anytime during the day, but after work appointments and weekend appointments are a little harder to come by. read more

To say that I am beyond dissatisfied is an understatement. I have silver fillings in my mouth and they are an eyesore and I knew that I'm going to need a couple implants in the back of my mouth. When trying to find a dentist I was recommended to go to this location. I know my mouth needs work and I wanted to start on it. He wanted to do the implants first but I told him I wanted to get the silver fillings fixed first because it was visible and we would go from there. I had one tooth pulled in between the teeth with silver fillings prior to Dr. Chen and he recommended a bridge. Everything sounded perfect until it was done. It was too bulky didn't look right and doesn't feel right. I emailed him and showed pictures. He didn't respond but I had already called in for a follow up appointment. Get there and I'm in the exam chair sitting for over a half an hour before anyone speaks to me, when he's never done that before. Comes in and says he's seen my email and asks what I don't like and I say everything and compare both sides. He basically says he can do so much and he didn't alter my gums and if I want my bridge more even to my natural side I'm going to need braces and it will take up to a year? Why would I need braces on straight teeth or a bridge? I show him the one tooth doesn't look like the other side's tooth and he says the right and left sides of the body are different. And he didn't know I wanted all this stuff done because that's more work and longer time. My teeth have always been straight and I've never had braces in my life. Then he shows me my x-rays from before to show me he didn't touch my gums and shows me the crowns. He shaves down the sides of the bridge a little because NOW he notices it's too bulky. He tells me I'm going to have to live with it (his exact words) and maybe I just have to get used to it. And he'll see me in a month and he will do more fixes if I still feel it necessary. I wasted my money and my time. Not to mention, I had a root canal done from another dentist who didn't do it right not even a year ago because it hurt and I asked him about starting that after the bridge and just said to pull it and do an implant. I got a second opinion before I came back the last time and they said they could save it. He didn't tell me that or tell me the tooth next to it has a cavity. Now I'm going to probably have to get 4 implants since he did a 4 tooth bridge. I'm never coming back here. read more

Dr. Chen is the best dentist I've had and I've had around 8 now. If I still lived in Evanston, I would be a patient for life. The office is clean, the staff is friendly, the equipment is very new and up to date, and there is never a wait. They are very considerate of your time and very professional as well. What I like about Dr. Chen is his no nonsense approach. He seems very smart and very capable of telling me exactly what my teeth need and up front about why. He (quickly) explains any problems you might have an also very open and transparent about any questions or issues you may have. He is not warm and fuzzy but I like that because I feel he's very genuine. He has never tried to upsell me on what I may or may not need and I have always felt completely comfortable that he's looking out for the health of my teeth. I got my husband to go there and he even gives a 10% referral discount on the new patient's first visit. He was nice enough to work with us to time it with our new insurance coverage. One thing that I particularly like is the new technology and the transparency that comes along with that. So he'll take xrays of your teeth and then pull them up on a monitor that directly faces the patient's chair. Not some monitor in the back and not those old films. What a wonderful place! I called on a Monday morning and got an appointment right away. Which I thought was crazy since I was a new patient and all. When I got there, I had to wait 5 mins, just long enough for me to fill out my paperwork. They had all my insurance information ran and told me before I left what my cost would be for my filling and sealants. Dr. Chen wanted me to have all of that information before I agreed to come back for those services. I think that is GREAT! Dr. Chen was so nice! And I love the fact that he was the one who actually cleaned my teeth and not the dental hygienist, a first for me. The place is very clean and organized. And the pictures of his kids all over the office brushing their teeth is so cute. I picked this place based on proximity to my house and the reviews from others and am VERY glad I went!! Finding a good AND honest dentist is always an arduous task. But I am immensely thankful that I have finally found one! I just moved to Chicago for my MA at the University of Chicago, and I am SO happy with Dr. Chen that I make the trip up to Evanston instead of finding a closer dentist in Hyde Park. I had initially gone to University Dental in Hyde Park for a routine dental cleaning; while I was happy with the dental hygienist, the dentist had suggested teeth work on several teeth that was quite expensive. I went to Radiant Smile for a second opinion where Dr. Chen told me that the suggested dental work was just a short-term solution; moreover, it didn't address the core significant issues. The office is state-of-the-art and very clean. Dr. Chen is incredibly erudite, nice, patient, and kindly explains all the viable options. He is extremely knowledgeable in his profession; this coupled with all the high-tech equipment makes me finally feel at ease that my teeth are in the best hands possible! When I say I am terrified of the dentist, I am not kidding. I'm talking sweating, consuming panic in a dentist office. The first time I went to Dr. Chen, it was for my first cleaning in over two years in January 2008. Unfortunately, I didn't realize that I had cracked a filling some time ago. By the time I went to Dr. Chen, I had a gigantic hole in my back tooth. My only option was to get a crown, a process that takes 2-3 appointments, many shots, and lots of deep breathing on my part. Dr. Chen could not have been more kind. He explained everything that had to be done--often a couple times--to make me feel more comfortable. Him and his staff did everything he could to keep me calm. He even had me bring my iPod in with me so I could listen to it while he was drilling. Don't get me wrong--I don't LOVE dentists now. Just so I'm being perfectly clear, I've never actually been to this dentist. Here's why: I decided to call the office after reading all the good reviews here and, of course, finding out this dentist was covered by my insurance. I called and the receptionist was friendly. I explained that I had been having pain in my teeth which had become substantially worse throughout the day and that I would like to make an appointment to see a dentist ASAP. She took all my information (a process that lasted almost 10 minutes) before she finally told me the first available appointment was in a week and a half!! A WEEK AND A HALF?!?!?!? WTF?!?!? I was in pain right then and (like I told her) had been for a few days. I didn't necessarily expect to get an appointment right away, but I thought for sure they would be able to get me in within a few days just so I could get my tooth looked at and find the source of the pain. I would have been more than content to make a follow up appointment for any necessary procedures. When I explained to the receptionist again that I was having quite a bit of pain she told me I was lucky they could fit me in that soon and that normally I would have had to wait at least a month for an appointment, but since they had a cancellation they could get me in sooner. I guess I just feel like a caring dentist (or any person) for that matter would do what they could to make a sure someone (especially a potential customer) wasn't in pain. *As a final point - if you are in pain and need a dentist who actually cares and will get you in right away see my review of Dr. Greg Weathers. read more
