Practices like this are why some people view the entire dental profession with distrust. This office pushed me into unnecessary and expensive procedures. They play up a sense of urgency and heavy handed tactics to get you to agree. My biggest regret is not getting a second opinion. For all their modernity, they are incapable of gathering an accurate estimate from your insurance. I have never had this experience with any other dental practice; the final bill has always aligned with the insurance estimate. At Artful Smiles, the bill was always, always significantly more than the delivered estimate. When I questioned the office on this, they told me to take it up with my insurance. Again, I have never had another dental practice (or doctor's office) do this. To give some idea of how absurd their pricing is, I was quoted $1,000 (with insurance!) for a crown. I am mortified to say I just accepted this without question. The final bill, however, was nearly $2,000 for a single crown. The crown broke down within a few years. I had a replacement done at North Shore Dental down the street for under $400. This office profits on scamming their clients and exploiting people in need of care. There are plenty of honest dentists in Evanston; I urge you to entrust your dental care to anyone other than these scam artists. read more

I have been going to Artful Smiles for a while, and while the care is generally good, I am getting sick of them pushing random extra treatments, especially when they don't fully explain what they are. They convinced me to do Invisalign a few years ago. Not covered by my insurance, and the only discount they offered was if I paid in full up front. So, sure, I did it, and yes, I am glad I did it in the end, but the process was very frustrating. They said I would be swapping out aligners over the course of about 8 months, but that it could take a little longer. They did not explain that they would be placing semi-permanent attachments on my teeth until I was sitting in the chair. I felt like, oh, this is basically the same thing as having braces again. I followed all of their instructions, but it still took about two years to finish the process. At what I thought was the end of my Invisalign treatment, since they said it was the end, they had me sign a piece of paper that said they actually recommended further treatment. They'd been "fine-tuning" everything on the top, but apparently thought something else was needed on the bottom, but hadn't addressed that in the six months prior, so that I could have been wearing different bottom aligners, or something? I was vexed at this complete lack of information, only to have a hygienist sit down to put a wire retainer on the inside of my bottom teeth without saying ANYTHING. I had to ask, wait, what are you doing??? All of the Invisalign aside, they also recommended me for gum graft surgery to fix some gum recession, something that wearing those retainers for months/years actually exacerbates, yet another thing that was never explained. The last two times I have gone in for a cleaning, I really didn't like the male hygienist at all. He was very heavy-handed, poking my gums to measure each tooth for recession, and then "check for bleeding," like, yeah, my gums might bleed if you're jamming a metal pick into them. He also pulled up my X-rays and pointed at a couple of different spots and was like, "Yeah, these look like they're going to turn into cavities," before pushing some new spot-treatment. There was literally nothing on the X-ray to see, and I really wondered why the hygienist and not the actual dentist would be making calls like that. I've had one cavity in my entire life (of course, discovered and filled at Artful Smiles), so I was pissed off that this guy was pushing yet another expensive "treatment," yet again without any explanation of what it is, the cost or how long the "treatment" takes. After looking it up, I saw that it's very expensive, not covered by insurance, I guess approved in the US, but not widely used by dentists. Maybe it's great for some people, but I did not appreciate the aggressiveness. I shouldn't have to fend off unnecessary costs every time I get a cleaning. read more

My personal experience with this studio is broken down into work I've gotten done on myself and work my kids have gotten done here. All of these experiences were with Dr. Korol. For myself, I refused to go back after being shamed about my dental health after a difficult pregnancy and postpartum experience and was told there was no excuse to let my teeth get that bad so I should just push through and do it anyway. I don't need added judgement when it was hard enough for me to even ask for help. Do better. For my kids, I was told they didn't accept our insurance so we signed both my older kids up for a "membership" plan there. The dental hygienists are always great, Dr. Korol is just rushing through everyone and can be very curt with people to get to the next room. It doesn't feel like she cares at all and that was a huge issue with my oldest daughter who's autistic. We brought her in for a checkup and fluoride treatment/cleaning and the hygienist was so good with her, explaining everything and going slowly so she had time to adjust and accept everything going on and Dr. Korol completely steamrolled all of the progress that was made by the hygienist. She kept talking over myself and my partner as we tried to get her to slow down as we could see a small meltdown brewing. She kept telling her "let me just do this, no it's fine just a little longer, don't move" and just generally ignoring her and her vocalizing she needed a break or a minute to breathe and instead told us "I have kids so I know how this can be." Great, do you have kids on the spectrum? Because I highly doubt it based on our experience. My daughter has been working so hard with her counselors on being vocal about her discomfort and working through it with breaks and just like that she felt completely out of control of a situation because it was inconvenient for Dr Korol to spend more than 15 minutes on her. At this point just let the hygienist finish the work because that was the only redeeming part of the appointment. I ended up calling to voice our frustrations and concerns with the office and was told that we could see the other dentist who was better equipped for children and that they completely understood the situation but ultimately we decided it's still her practice and money that goes to her so we decided to take our whole family's business elsewhere. My partner, two daughters and myself will no longer be going to this dental studio due to our experiences. Please use this as a learning experience moving forward and do better. read more

I have 6 veneers an a piece the size of 1/4 of a tic-tac broke off my left incisor 5 days before we were heading on vacation. My previous dentist retired in November so I called and Artful Smiles did a wonderful job of accommodating me. However, they insisted on taking an X-ray even though I strongly asked them not to as I am schedule to go through radiation for cancer soon and it was utterly unnecessary for them to cement the small piece back (I've had my veneers chip off 10 times since I got them in 1998). But I let them x-ray me even though it was stupid. Then I got the bill. $902. Even with insurance, I am out of pocket over $500 to cement a tiny piece of veneer back. I looked back at my previous dentist where he did the same work on a much larger piece of veneer: $250 before my insurance so I was out of pocket around $150. Before my chemo started my oncologist let me know not to get my teeth cleaned. I hadn't received the above bill so I called them and scheduled a cleaning 2 days before chemo was to begin. I go the appointment and they told me that they had to do a full x-ray panel to clean my teeth. I told them, again, why I don't want x-rays (radiation) and that it is unnecessary for prophylaxis. They wouldn't clean my teeth without so I walked out. They are professional but outrageously overpriced and require you pay for things like x-rays that are utterly unnecessary. read more

I went to Artful Smiles Dental Studio for two cleanings last year since it is conveniently located for me. At first, I was wooed by how clean and modern the office was - the aesthetic almost serves as a distraction to predatory upselling practices. Unfortunately both times I went, I felt uncomfortable both times with how pushy they were on upselling me on services like special night guards that were an outrageous price out of pocket, deep cleaning and fluoride treatments, and claiming I had cavities when I didn't after going to another dentist for a second opinion. I want to give the hygienists a high rating for being kind and thorough with their cleanings, but overall I want people to be aware of the predatory upsells they try to do. Every time I said I'd like to hear more about how much the extra services would cost, the dentist would bring in someone from the front to go over numbers and when I expressed my discomfort with taking on extra expenses the office staff would not push it but the dentist made it sound like my teeth would deteriorate without getting extra services ASAP. I decided to go to another dentist who was more fair and ethical and he said I had no cavities to get filled, which confirmed my gut feeling that I was getting pushed to give this office more money. I recommend looking elsewhere for a dentist unless you are good about sticking to your boundaries. read more

I love this dentist office! From the moment you walk in the door everyone is genuinely kind and friendly (it's not fake, they are simply good people.) I've had a few procedures with Dr. Koral and she's knowledgeable and skilled but also funny and charming. She does great work and it's nice to get to watch Netflix during a long procedure. I've loved the vibe in the office and the aesthetics are a good mix of posh but comfy. I've had two different lovely technicians clean my teeth and they were both excellent! Steven and I were both bopping along to the music while he cleaned my my teeth and it had been a long time since I'd had a proper clean so he had to put in some real work but we had fun. Today the charming Diana cleaned my teeth and I swear it was the gentlest cleaning I've ever had. I could feel the grit getting removed but zero pain! I'm sitting here right now enjoying the feeling of running my tongue over my clean teeth. I came home to tell my husband to call and schedule his cleaning asap! I agree with everyone else that it is clean and you don't wait long and everyone is super nice. I really liked going there. But, I'm almost 40 and I'd never had a cavity before going there three years ago. The first time I visited, they said I had a cavity. I wasn't too surprised because my dentist had retired a year and a half before and I hadn't been to the dentist in a while. Every time after that, I'd have more and more cavities. Finally, when they said I had 3 cavities on my last visit and they sent a detailed pre-bill for 452$ post insurance I thought maybe I should double check. I went to two other dentists who both declared my mouth cavity free. It shouldn't be a surprise that a dental office covered in bling with a silly water feature in every room is ripping you off. But, I was surprised. I'm still sad. I hate saying bad things about an all lady run office. I love businesses that are female owned and operated. But these people are crooks. Do not go. read more

Came here for a cleaning. Was told during the cleaning that my teeth looked great and there were no issues. After getting X-rays done, they then proceeded to tell me that I needed to get 6 fillings, a retainer and a crown on one of my teeth. Felt very pushy and wanted to see me the very next day to schedule the procedures. Knew something was off, so decided to go to my old dentist in the south suburbs for a second opinion. Took the same x-rays and the dentist said nothing was wrong with my teeth and that this place (Artful Smiles) is unethical. From the moment I called to set up an appointment you can hear the joy in their voice. The receptionist helped with insurance questions-provided call backs and quickly set up an appointment. They explained what measures they are taking due to Covid and kept each guest in different rooms as we arrived. Once I waked in my temperature was taken, three questions were asked and hand sanitizer was provided. This location is decorated beautifully. They took me on time, explained thoroughly what the procedure was going to be, They were gentle and recapped the steps they took prior to me walking out of the door. I didn't have a great experience here - I came in specifically for tooth pain after waiting some time to get the appointment (understandable, not an issue). When I got there they had scheduled me for a tooth cleaning, did not address the tooth pain, and had to schedule me for a separate visit to address something that really was very painful. I felt that the hygienist was a bit too judgmental - I can't help that I love Diet Coke! - and too pushy, insisting on me purchasing a $25 toothpaste, saying I needed to purchase a $125 electric toothbrush, etc. Felt like they were more focused on the money than addressing real patient concerns. read more

ALL staff members are exceptionally welcoming and the environment is very calming. The cleaning room that I was in was literally called the "Zen" room that had a wall fountain. Yes, you read it right: a WALL fountain! :) Beyond all of this, the CARE that I received from Dr. Korol and Inga were without hesitation, the BEST care I could have ever received. TIME TO CHANGE YOUR DENTIST!!! Yes, it's slightly nicer without the "dentist" smell that lingers in so many old medical buildings. The music here is louder than older folks normally like-but the sound quality is awesome and the music selection is actually good! After over 90 minutes I feel obliged to review the entire experience! It was a good one. The cleaning was REALLY comprehensive. Despite hearing that annoying word 'inflammation" about two dozen times, I realized my teeth were getting a cleaning like I never had at my previous dentist of 25 years! Deep cleaning! The woman doing the cleaning was superb- perhaps the most focused I've ever had. This is a very professional office where everyone had been TRAINED really well. I got the full reminder or "deep mouth review" with Dr. Korol's recommendations for future steps, all of which were justified and well-presented. Inflammation came up there too!' Here's the KEY: Dental work and periodic work are all part of SELF-CARE. This is THE place if you live or work in Evanston. Dr. Victoria Korol gets a well-earned 5 stars. WOW! I can't say enough great things about this place. I moved to Rogers Park not too long ago and have been actively looking for a new dental home. I found Artful Smiles on Yelp, saw all of your amazing reviews, and gave them a call. I was greeted by a friendly voice on the phone and it was super easy to set up my appointment. Fast forward to the day of my appointment, I was able to put a face to the friendly voice. She greeted me by name (impressive!) and offered me coffee and/or water. Great music in lobby by the way. Props to the DJ. I filled out my new patient paperwork and got in the chair in little to no time. The hygienist was very bubbly & thorough. They allotted a full 90 mins to checking for any potential red flags, taking lots of xrays, photos, checking my lymph nodes, jaw bone, gums, etc... and of course cleaning my teeth. Dr. Korol was a delight. She made me feel comfortable and was very straightforward about the steps I need to take before my next dental cleaning. She also wrote me referral to a great oral surgeon in the area that takes my insurance. If you're looking for a new dentist, look no more. I HIGHLY recommend Artful Smiles Dental Studio. I absolutely love my dentist and will continue to stay a loyal patient. I've been a patient for 4 years and have watched the practice grow but never lose it's character. I trust Dr. K and her team as providers for my children as well, especially during this pandemic. I've never waited for longer than 2 minutes in the waiting room, the office is gorgeous and CLEAN, the staff is friendly... the energy in the office is GOOD! I happened to be walking past this dental office on my way back to my condo and I picked up a flyer outside their office. From the moment I called, I knew I was going to be well taken care of. Ashley at the front desk is so incredibly helpful and very outgoing. Agnes, Dr. Korol's assistant is so very gentle and considerate. And Dr. Moron is just brilliant. After taking my 7 year-old son to another Evanston pediatric dentist for a few years, I began to suspect that this dentist was performing unnecessary procedures like recommending multiple root canals (yes, on a 7 year old). I took him to Artful Smiles for a second opinion and confirmed my suspicions. They were able to get him in right away and treated him like a VIP. They were so good with him, helping him not to be nervous, carefully explaining everything they were doing, letting him feel like he was a part of the whole process, even complimenting him on doing his part well. They gave him a friendly and sweet "talking to" about taking care of his teeth better. In the end, They found he needed two very minor fillings for a couple of tiny cavities, but no root canals were required. They were even able to get him back in within a week to accommodate our tight schedule. We really wished we had been going to Artful Smiles all along. I highly recommend this Dentist and her staff. However, I felt at home and at peace the moment I walked in. The environment is beautiful, clean and modern. They took a photo of me before getting my cleaning which was really fun and created an atmosphere of fun and play! The Staff are so friendly and explained everything in detail. Dr. Victoria Korol is engaged and present with you during the whole appointment. I never felt rushed. She answered all of my questions and even shared about her family! From the first call you make you will feel at ease. The team is thorough and explains every step along the way (unless you are watching Netflix or listening to music). Everyone clearly enjoys working with one another and Dr. Korol is warm, has a good sense of humor and does not cut corners. I had four teeth to fix and got a night guard. Was pain and stress free. I had my first appointment today with Dr. Korol and it was by far the best experience I had at a dentist. First off, the space in general was beautiful. I felt like I was more at a spa than a dentist office. I'm used to cold, stark white walls, but these walls were softer tones which made it feel more welcoming. Ashley was so friendly when I first walked in. Everything went so quickly, but thoroughly. Dr. Korol and I started talking about our children and afterwards she showed me the area designated for kids in the back. I was so happy to hear that she also takes younger patients and will be taking my kids here for their next check up. I've already sent my husband the info to make his appointment. Great space, even greater staff! I almost asked them all to come next door to Hoosier Mama to get some pie and coffee after my cleaning. Highest recommendation! read more
