In Sayulita for a week of sun and surf. On a mission to find the best fish tacos and The Real Fish Taco was our next stop. It has a great location just off the beach with seating on the street. The fish tacos were okay at best with limited flavour. They asked if I wanted it with guacamole and I advised yes with the tacos. They brought a separate order of guacamole which ended up costing more than the rest of our lunches and drinks combined. Definitely some misunderstanding and I should know better when they do not have menus available or visible. It was not a positive food experience and we do not plan to return. read more

We left Sayulita on a Sunday afternoon, with just enough time to squeeze in some last minute sightseeing and a taco lunch in town. Someone had heard good things about The Real Fish Taco, and we hunkered down for a quick round of fish and shrimp tacos. This was a charming street vendor with plentiful seating around a very active grill. I think there was even an indoor space connected to the stand, but most people seemed to be eating outside, in the heart of the Sayulita action. We were able to order pretty fast and got enough seats for our large group at one of the tables. Service was friendly, and while the food took a minute, it was clear they were cooking it while we waited. I tried the shrimp and fish tacos, both grilled (deep fried would've taken longer, and we had to skip town). They were delicious--great snappy texture to the shrimp, nice meaty flesh on the fish. Both tasted fresh, and came topped with a vibrant mix of salsas and cremas and chopped vegetables. There were a couple table sauces on the side, too, including something that tasted pretty Asian, with I swear, like garlic and soy sauce. While we waited for our food, I saw another diner drinking a giant michelada and couldn't resist ordering one for myself. This was fantastic, one of the best micheladas I've ever had, spicy and tart and incredibly refreshing. I wish I'd been drinking these the whole trip, but am glad I squeezed one in at the end. Also of note, for me if for no one else--as we sat there, I saw a Mexican tourist couple walking by with their basset hound, and missing my two at home, I freaked the fuck out and snuggled and selfied with el basset Sivilo. Basically, The Real Fish Taco let me end my trip on a perfect note, with three of my favorite things--bassets, micheladas, and tacos--all in one place. read more

FOOD POISONING!! Stay far far away from this place! We had a shrimp dish (aguachiles) that caused me to reenact the Exorcist all night long! My husband suffered a more delayed onset but it still came out in a most excruciating defecation process that left him several pounds lighter. Located steps from the beach, I went here two days in a row. The fish tacos are definitely bomb as hell and they have a couple special sauces that they brought us, each day they were different. They didn't have a couple of the things on the menu but probably because the catch is different every day. Over all great food and awesome location. read more

This place doesn't advertise prices. Make sure you get the prices before you order. Guac and two drinks cost more than 75% of EVERY OTHER meal we had during our 8 days in Mexico. The guy mixed a ton of salt in the drink so the margaritas tasted like lime flavored sea water. The guac was decent... but for 150 pesos. NOBODY charges that much for guac in Mexico. Lots of things about this fish taco stand seem like they should make it perfect -- the hordes of customers, the location within sight, smell, and sound of the ocean, and the delicious-smelling pieces of mahi and other seafood on the grill. But alas, each of the tacos we had were disappointing. Some, like smoked marlin, had a strange sweet sauce on them; others, like the fried oysters, just lacked zing. The mahi was indeed good, but somehow it seemed to have become less good by being transformed into a taco than it would have been straight off the grill. And that is not how tacos are supposed to work. The tables are dressed with a bowl of julienned vegetables in soy sauce, and while those were strange, they were quite tasty. read more

Be careful when you come here. My wife and I sat down and were greeted enthusiastically, the type of friendly and great service you experience all over Mexico. Our waiter, whom I also think is the owner, came over and started to upsell items without bringing over a menu. When it came to ordering, she simply asked what we wanted, still not bringing a menu. We should have known to ask for the menu. I guess you have to learn the hard way. The drinks came, which we're not good, (flat sparkling water and watered down margarita). The food came with too salty ceviche and decent fish tacos. But "the real" surprise came at the end, a bill that was wayyyy above the standard dinner price with no chargers, simply what we order. Had no idea what anything was supposed to cost. The owner had placed herself between the menu on another table so that we couldn't take a gander. We paid and left. I don't recommend it. Sayulita has so much wonderful food and hospitality elsewhere. Or, perhaps all you need to do is ask for the menu unlike us. Your call. read more

Unreal mahi tacos. Final answer. Come for the tacos, stay for the chipotle oil salsa - super fire and super addicting. Everything made fresh on the spot with an ocean view. Ordered fish and shrimp tacos "a la plancha" or on the grill last night. We were sitting right where they're cooking. The cook served us previously cooked shrimps and fish instead of fresh ones. We saw them do it and refused the food. They said it was the same thing. If you look like you're not local, I would not recommend this place. read more

I feel this is truly a 1 star but giving it a 2 star because my tacos tasted decent. The not so decent: they asked my partner and I after we order our tacos if we wanted guacamole. We said yes, thinking it was a side to our tacos. They gave us an order of guacamole and chips to the expensive cost of 150 pesos that did not have any taste. Have had much better guacamole in other places in Sayulita for much less. Then we got the bill. Holy cow, most expensive tacos we paid for in Sayulita and we went to a lot of places! My favorite seafood tacos (mahi mahi, shrimp) tacos in Sayulita! It's right before the beach, and inexpensive. I've never seen carrots/cucumber/onion etc marinated in soy sauce as a side but let me tell you it was delicious. The guacamole portions are large enough for 4-5 people too. read more

Tried the mahi mahi (grilled and breaded)-both were delicious but the breaded version contained decidedly larger portions of fish, shrimp and Marlin. Also enjoyed huge margaritas, free shots of tequila and a hefty bowl of guacamole. Everything was delicious but the shrimp tacos were my fave! Oscar was our server and he was extremely friendly and accommodating. We even came back for round 2 later on in the day after a swim. Perfect location as the beach is steps away! I was wondering why this place had only a 3.5 star rating and it appears that most negative reviews were about the cost of guacamole that the reviewers assumed was an free add-on to the tacos. Serious tacos here, that's what we're reviewing. At least 3oz. of mahi, grilled well and with a terrific flour, yes flour tortilla. Very rare in these parts, flour tortillas that is, and they're done better than anywhere I've seen. Topped with a mound of lettuce, yes it's garnished well! The fish tacos are good, deep fried was my choice. It takes a while to get your order though cus they're made to order. We waited about 35 mins for 3 tacos. With a beer it came to 180. Dude takes my 200 and never comes back with change...he just expected it as tip. I think there are other places in town with better service that are just as good and are more comfortable. A perfect stop on the way to or from the beach, The Real Fish Taco has one of the best fish tacos I've had in a long time. We tried both the grilled fish and the shrimp tacos. I've eaten at this place a few times over the years and it has been relatively decent until now. I ordered two fish tacos (all I have ever eaten at this place) and a beer. The fish tacos were almost unbearable. They were so heavily seasoned with a season salt that I felt like I was dipping my tongue in a bowl of salt. Underneath this heavy dosage of sodium was the distinct, yet fowl taste of fish permeating through. Either they were trying to cover up the awful fish taste or the cook (same lady as always) accidentally dropped my fish in a bucket of salt bath. I tried to cover the awful taste up with the habanero sauce, but it didn't work. I couldn't even finish my tacos. I tried to oder another beer but the waiter dude was too busy standing directly behind me and ignoring all the customers. He absolutely sucked today, too. After unsuccessfully ordering another beer, I asked for my check. It took him over 10 minutes to give me my change back. He was not friendly at all and just had a bad attitude. The only reason I'm giving this place two stars is because of the location and because they have served up decent fish tacos in the past. read more
