Alberta Cooperative Grocery is amazing. I used to frequent it when I lived in PDX in the day circa 2004 to 2005. On a recent visit here it is still a special place worth visiting and supporting. Kate, who works in bulk, was friendly and helpful. I ended up picking up some goji berries in bulk, harmless coconut water to hydrate the walkabout in the sun, and some medjool dates rolled in coconut with a sliced date on top. They have a great variety of everything from flowers, to heaps in bulk including: numerous whole grains, to various local coffee beans, almonds, and even reishi mushrooms in bulk. I try to eat a lot of whole grains. Quinoa is a staple of mine in San Francisco for it cooks fast, is high in protein, and just make sure to rinse first. 20 min it is done. For produce they had amazing heirloom tomatoes in a variety of colors, avocado, and heaps of greens which are a favorite of mine. Greens such as kale cook up fast with a little bit of olive oil or steamed. Anyone living in or visiting Portland should check out this gem of a store with amazing products and friendly helpful staff. read more

I've been shopping there for many years. And can fine things there that are difficult or unlikely to find other places. The store is small The aisles are narrow. It is nice to see something approaching an old school health food store as a co-op but I need to point out something that happened today that I was not happy with. In the time that I've been shopping at the co-op there's been a lot of personnel turnover and maybe a few familiar faces but I find the cashiers to be kind of strange with the interactions and to day I find myself getting angry after my transaction with the cashier because he didn't hand the food over to me. I had to literally reach over the counter for one of the items and I just got the sense from this guy that he was just indifferent or uncaring and that just rubs me the wrong way. read more

This is a small neighborhood grocery store. I stopped by today to search for some herbal/decaf tea. At first, I was disappointed to see a large bulk section (including teas), and that wasn't what I was after (I needed some tea in bags). But thankfully, I turned the corner, and saw they had a large regular tea selection as well! The produce is inviting and fresh, and I picked up some apples as an after-thought. The store is small, but in my limited interaction, the staff were friendly. They asked if I was a member when checking out, although there is nothing preventing you from going if you are not a member (who knows the mysteries of how co-ops work?). I often work from an office down the street, so I'm sure I'll swing by here again in the future to grab some pantry staples. I'm sure the prices are higher than larger-format grocery stores, though this is a nice neighborhood option. read more

To potential Coop shoppers; Unfotunately my experience with this Alberta Ave. market has bee utterly disappointing. I am a small specialty-citrus grower from the South Bay. Everytime I have ever reached out to inquire if I could show them my citrus fruit offerings (when I'm in the Portland area) they have actively rejected and disparaged my efforts. Never once, did I catalyze a positive responce from the staff at this "so called" cooperative. What is it that a handsome hetorosexual wholesome vegan/vegetarian farmer/grower/broker would trigger such a deplorable responce? When I get "sideswiped" with a frontal assult like this i say "makes me want to go shop at the Grocery Outlet(R)". Ouch!!! read more

Stopped by to pick up a handful of things and check out the beers they had. They are located on a corner and have a very small parking lot on the side, so you may have to park on the street. Good selection of food stuff packed into a small location. Downside is the location however as you will have to get passed the Portland zombies to get in most likely. There is a little food truck park a crossed the street but 2/3 were closed on a Friday evening at about 6pm when I was there so don't get your hopes up when you see it. read more

This is my go-to store because it carries the best local produce at the best prices. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The bulk bins are high quality and allow you to reduce packaging waste while also saving tons of money. I try to buy everything here because it means I am spending less at businesses that support the oligarchy. read more

While walking down Alberta Street, my partner and I came across the Alberta Co-op, and in the window were water bottles that caught our eye -- the image on the bottles was of a cat wearing sunglasses, pushing a grocery cart. Both my partner and I loved the image, and it just so happened that I was hoping to find a water bottle with an interesting image while on vacation in Portland/San Francisco, as a few months prior, someone stole my water bottle at the gym. So a couple of days later we went back to the co-op, and I bought a water bottle and a canvass tote bag with the image, and my partner, who loves cat t-shirts, bought a shirt. (I also bought a much needed sweatshirt, although it unfortunately did not have the cat image.) We spoke to the really friendly employee, who explained what the co-op was all about, and she said that the co-op's logo is of "Pickles to co-op kitten". We also bought a few snacks, but as we were not buying groceries, I didn't take a good look at what products they had in stock, or the prices. I'm not sure how the prices compare to that of other grocery stores, but I suspect they may be a little higher. I think this is the epitome of Portland. What an awesome store. Its small, cozy, and everyone was so nice. I love that Portland is so inclusive and friendly. I was being annoying and asked for the nice guy at the check out counter to separate my transaction because my bank requires 10 transactions a month. As a credit card guy, I do not use my debit card often. Any who he was nice and kindly obliged with no attitude. the selection is awesome. I think everything is on the higher end so their selection is more gourmet? I think that is a good way to describe it. but cute place. I have been dropping in to this great grocery store on a frequent basis for over 5 years. It is Portland for me, organic, sustainable, local, small batch, bulk produce, and unique people who have been working there for years who always acknowledge and greet you like an old friend. The fruit and vegetables look and taste so much better than the organic produce at the big stores. I love the little basket with cheap bruised and battered items. Great for dried herbs and spices, Good coffee options. The multicolored popcorn along with nutritional yeast is my snack of choice. Almost always has specials on dark chocolate. Downside is cheese and meats are expensive. read more

Alberta Street's answer to Trader Joe's is a totally a-ok local, organic, pricey, and small store for anyone in the neighborhood. The space may be small, but they cram a lot of stuff into Alberta Cooperative Grocery, so, you should be able to find at least one of organic thing you're needing. Olivia Z. and me stopped in to get a few veggies and some of the self-serve dry goods/snacks. Several of the items truly did seem to be from Oregon, California, and Washington, so, it's great to see them living up to their locally-sourced goals. No place on Alberta has much parking, so, having some spots helps. The one hindrance to me being a regular was the prices. The old adage, "You get what you pay for." is true ... especially if you want local and organic food in Portland at Alberta Co-op Grocery. read more

Kelly M is exactly right - there is something about the staunch smell of sustainability - and the more organic these local grocers are, the more this intoxicating pungency seeps from every aisle. Alberta Co-op has a mission of becoming a community resource and gathering place, by working to get their customers face to face with the farmers. Even cooler - the Alberta community actually owns this store and you don't have to be a member to shop! The produce here is beautiful. Seriously I walk through and think- wow I need to eat me some more veggies. I also find that it is (the produce) reasonably priced and seems to be more locally based produce (big bonus). As for the rest of my groceries- forget it. This place is pricey (I'm not a co-op member, but have compared prices to larger stores and its more). Selection is also limited. Its a good place to stop for a few items, but I can't buy everything I need here. Lastly (and on a random note), I purchased chicken stock on sale here the other day (the regular price was way more expensive than stock found elsewhere) and realized that in the midst of being cheap I ended up purchasing chicken stock with a use by date that expired more than 6 months ago. I'm by no means a food expert and suspect things are safe to eat way past their expiration date, but chicken stock kind of sketched me out. My soup also tasted a little funny, but perhaps if I had not noted the date I would have imagined the soup was fine?? At any rate, great produce, but skip for other items. read more

We're new to the neighborhood and we just couldn't be happier with our collection of near-by businesses. Alberta Coop has a great selection (especially bulk, which my frugal, waste-hating soul immediately registered in my memory bank). The gentleman manning the register was so kind as to switch registers to a closer one to me, as I was awkwardly struggling with my son's umbrella stroller and then even offered to get the door for me on the way out. The produce also looked amazing, but because of aforementioned stroller struggles, I'll have to come back to hoard it all. read more

If you're looking for a GIANT selection, this isn't for you. If you want to support local, then this is for you. I drove in traffic. I had to use the restroom terribly. I was informed there was no restroom for customers. Fair enough, can a one time exception be made? I won't ask ever again? "Nowhere on Alberta has restrooms". Cool. I said I get it but I'm literally going to pee myself for the love of god take pity on me this once! No pity was given. "There might be some cafes down the street that have restrooms". I drove as fast as possible to New Seasons, where I was not treated like an animal and proceeded to do all of my week's shopping. I will never go back. I suggest the same for anyone reading this review. Some additional considerations: there's no meat or cheese department. There's a couple of pre-packaged things, that's it. Produce, bulk section, that's all there is. There are aggressive homeless people always outside the door. And the people who work there... don't give a f#*$ about you. I'll stick to New Seasons or my little cooperative in NW Portland, where I'm treated like a human being and which has an actual selection of food that is not produce or bulk beans. Cheers! read more

I've been in this store probably three times over the course of seven years, and every time I've been there, I remember and reaffirm why I never want to go there again. I feel like everyone there hates me. I've seen employees look at me with utter disdain and absolute loathing. Last time I walked in, I happened to see a store employee to whom I unwittingly smiled in a friendly-greeting way, and was met with a look of total disgust. Like, not a single word spoken, barely walked in, and I'm getting a stern look of disapproval, as though I'd just walked in with a confederate flag sleeveless t-shirt blasting Nugent out of a shitty CD boombox. Then I get to the produce and see a single green bell pepper for $3.49, which provides an example of how steep the mark up is in the produce and throughout the store. I understand it's a cooperative, and many things are local and organic, and as such, prices can be expected to be higher, but nearly $4 for a single bell pepper is just ridiculous. Like, c'mon. Why should I be expected to act like that's okay? Why do so many people act like that's okay? Well, if you can afford it, I'm sure it satiates your urge towards conspicuous consumption, but you can't front like you're about the community when you charge exorbitant prices and maintain a culture of elitism and exclusiveness within your organization. I hesitate to use the phrase classism because it sounds a bit too forceful and deliberate, but in effect, that's what the Alberta Cooperative contributes to and represents. I love the coop, BUT when will you start using the chip card reader at check out? You are putting your customers at risk, but mostly you are putting the coop at risk, because if anything happened, the coop is liable. Did you get some sort of exception for the EMV ready requirement? You have a chip reader, so why not use it? When I asked I was told "we don't use chip we still swipe." Why? "If you are merchant who is still not processing chip card payments, you could shoulder consumer fraud costs if an incident occurs and you're not "EMV-ready."
