The racial profiling reviews are 100% true and I'm disgusted by the behavior of the staff here. I visited this place as a black male for the first time and had the displeasure of dealing with 2 highly condescending women (one named Artimis) who approached me while I was quietly browsing and attempted to rush me out of the store within only a few minutes of being there. They then proceeded to be welcoming towards a white man who came in shortly after me. Every word out of her mouth was laced with passive aggression. It's honestly embarrassing that these people claim to be healers with such deeply discriminatory and disrespectful demeanors. Herbalism and spirituality is merely an aesthetic for them with none of the values that follow. Spiritual narcissists at best. If you enjoy your tea with an egregious side of pretension and want to walk out of there feeling like crap, this is the place for you. If not, I highly suggest going somewhere else. Don't be fooled by their bandaid responses to other instances like this and the one they will probably write to this one to keep their pockets lined $$$. They don't care, hence why this has occurred on multiple occasions. No amount of sage can cleanse this place. Incredibly quiet and weird vibe in the shop, the employees stare at you and judge you like you're an idiot for whatever you're buying. You get 20% off your order when you order herbs in bulk online so I suggest order everything you need online and pick up your order then getting the hell out of there unless you want eyes on you the entire time like you're going to rob the place. I commend this shop for their decolonization practices but I just can't get over the horrible energy in there. I try to not go there very often but they have some of the best items in stock. And one of the only shops open on Sundays to get supplies. read more

Honestly 3 stars may be a little harsh; I really loved the little store. My biggest complaint is that the store is far too small to move around in. As well, I think their selection might be a bit limited as a result of the confined space. I came in looking for skullcap (I THINK, whatever it was they didn't have it, anyways) and didn't see that it was available. I've been to this store 3 or 4 times and it has a cool vibe and an amazing selection of bulk herbs and teas. They've almost always have what I've desired on hand (Covid tip: you have to order herbs online, all other items you can get in the store). While they have a lot of things in the store, the staff isn't very knowledgable about them. On each occasion that I've been in the store and asked questions, the clerks weren't able to help me or know how to use the products. I asked how to use loose incense and charcoal bricks, she told me she didn't super know and talked me through how she assumed it would be done. (At least there's google), On a different visit I asked for guidance about using the herbs and asked for suggestions to assist me and I was told that they didn't know much about them. While I appreciate not everyone would be an expert on everything, I feel that a specialty store would have a staff who has a basic knowledge about the products and how to use them and or be able to guide you to solid resources. If you are in a curious space or beginner in this realm, I wouldn't suggest this as a resource but if you already know what you're doing this is a great place to get supplies. read more

Clary Sage is a beautiful small medicinal shop run by an Indigenous person. A lot of plant medicines have been co-opted by yt people, so it's wonderful having this shop run by an actual Indigenous person who has a strong connection to the land and plants. I have been a customer of this shop for about 8 years, have seen them grow from a tiny space into a larger space. They've been really safe and cautious during Covid, which is extremely appreciated. Please check this shop out. Portland is lucky that they are here. They carry herbs, tinctures, candles, crystals, and many other wonderful items that are made locally. read more

I love stores like this, herbs, candles, and all kinds of great smelling oils! The witchy brooms were a delight to look at. They had a free sample of herbal hot tea to drink as I walked around. I immediately saw some unique perfumes, and found one I just adored, made me smell like orange spice herbal tea! Love smelling unique. Great gift to myself on a fun day exploring Portland! One of the best places in Portland to grab herbs teas, chakra candles, sage, Essential oils & other stuff to make natural medicine. They also have Tarot cards & other Native American stuff that I have no clue how to use. They have a complementary Tea station and they have a smudge station too so you can smudge before or after you leave. The owner is extremely nice and knowledgeable I've been coming here for over year they now have a punchcard so that's awesome. Can't wait until their reward cards go electronic. read more

It is difficult for me to wrap my mind around the rudeness that I experienced in this shop. It was my second time there (the first time I experienced the same rude, condescending woman and I decided to give it a second chance). I regretted setting foot in thus shop a second time. Instead of being helpful, warm, and welcoming I was met with a holier than thou attitude and a terrible feeling that I just couldn't shake off for the entire rest of my day once I left this place. On a random day trip yesterday I drove here from Seattle and was really excited. The one visible employee was kind and offered to help, but knew absolutely nothing about any of the products. Soooo when I asked her some basic product questions (since she claimed she could answer any questions), she had no clue. I believe even mentioned google. I believe she found some cheat sheet and read off of it. After realizing this, I just picked based of the information I already had and then selected 1 other product and went to check out. Sadly, the woman working decided to stop completing filling the bags of herbs I requested, not one, but 3 times. She stopped working on my order to call forward 3 customers (there was an issue with 2 of 3 prolonging ringing them up on top of that) they all came in at different times after I was already at the register. Finally I asked her to please stop doing that and finish the rest of the order, it's been 25 minutes and she only had 2 finished 1 ounce bags finished. I paid for the measly 3 total she finished and left (not daring to wait for the other 6 herbs I was excited about), she then expressed I could order online. I'm so confused. Then why are you paid to work and why is there a space leased if you do not understand how to manage ringing customers up and how to pour an ounce of herbs in a ziplock bag? It was incredibly awkward. She didn't even notify her coworker in the back to help, although her tasks were not difficult, she just didn't seem to understand how to...be employed I guess? Use common sense to help the situation maybe? I even offered to package my own herbs. From a business standpoint you lost more profit from me canceling the rest of my order vs. any attempt to ring up the 3 people with singular items. I haven't ever written a review before but felt the need because this store is supposed to be about positivity that being said I have a stamp card for this store and have easily spent over 150$ here seeing as there aren't many shops like this and I don't always want to get things offline and I have always lived in the area I was excited about this store this was in 2018/2019 when I found the store and would go in with what I wanted already in mind so it was a quick in and out. Most recently I've been in 3x since Covid happened and everytime I feel as if me being there is a problem or a burden I don't feel like I can ask questions or just even browse without what feels like an attitude from the workers and I thought this might just be one person but have gotten this on all but one occasion and not to be that person but being a woman of color these days I look at the signs on the windows for "Black Lives Matter" and such before going in and seeing these signs would make you feel as if your customer service would feel just as inclusive but I feel as if this place is just a part of gentrification on Alberta yes they have signs yes they say they're for it but when it's their time to step up they fall short in giving the people they say they stand for a safe place. If this place is owned by a minority they should think to hire help that is minority as well or at least people who are going to treat everyone like they are happy about being there. One thing I love about Clary Sage Herbarium, and that many people don't know, is that it is owned by a Native, Two-Spirit person. Laurie goes out of her way to buy from and support other Native artists, and to offer quality, ethically-sourced supplies needed by our community, whether they're animal medicine, plant medicine, or crafts. Consequently, I go out of my way to shop here, and to tell everyone I know to support this awesome, Native-owned business. For me, it's worth the extra drive to North Portland to know my dollars are supporting a marginalized person who does so much to support Native culture, and the wellness of all our blended communities. There are a good variety of oils, but it's hard having a desire to purchase from here when the older woman (who I assume runs the shop) is pushy, cold and condescending. I felt very uncomfortable when she asked me if I was going to buy something, as if I was waisting her time. I went with a few friends who immediately walked out of the shop, their reason was because they felt bad energy coming from the shop keeper. Their words, not mine, I'm just the messenger. I usually will give people the benefit of the doubt, she could of been having a bad day, who knows? First impressions are hard to shake and I can't bring myself to visit this store again without feeling shame and guilt for not buying anything before. That's not my cup of tea, there are plenty of shops I can get better priced oils from, normally I don't like to do this as I enjoy supporting small mom and pop shops, but my experience has gotten the better of me. read more

I was really disappointed with my recent experience here and won't be coming back. Me and a friend went in because she wanted to purchase some herbs. My friend is an herbalist, so she is familiar with herbs and knew exactly what she wanted going in. We walked in and it was really quiet--only two other customers in the store who were being helped by someone behind the counter. Despite the quiet and being given quick eye contact by them, we were not greeted when we came in. Nevertheless, my friend searched their shelves for the herbs she wanted, found what she was looking for, and held the two jars of herbs in her hands. We waited off to the side for the people ahead of us to be helped and she and I talked amongst ourselves in the meantime. Suddenly, a white woman with long hair comes from a small room behind the shop, sees me and my friend standing there talking, interrupts us and says something like, "We don't allow you to put jars on the counter while waiting to be served. The counter space is too small. You'll need to wait." Which was an odd thing to say because we weren't making any moves to go up to the counter. We weren't hovering behind the people ahead of us and we weren't impatient. Like I said, we were standing off to the side near where the herbs were and were waiting until the other two customers were finished paying. And because the shop is small, there was really nowhere else to stand. But we both said, "OK," and shifted a bit to take up less space, thinking that maybe that was the issue. We went back to waiting. About a minute or two later, this woman comes back to us again, takes the jars from my friend's hands and says something like, "Sorry, but to keep with the continuity, I'm going to put these jars back on the shelf." Without asking, she put the jars back on the shelf behind us and walked away to the back of the shop again. Me and my friend were really confused. By this woman's response, you would think we were straight up juggling the jars, opening and spilling their contents, and taking the herbs out and rubbing them all over our faces. By her response, you would also think that they were slammed with six other customers in the store and that they were overwhelmed by their busyness. But no, we two of the four customers in the place and we were simply holding the jars and waiting for our turn. Why would us holding two jars as we waited quietly for our turn mess up the "continuity"? What does that even mean? Are we, grown-ass adults, not allowed to hold the jars of the herbs we want while we wait? We were really puzzled. It felt like we were being reprimanded like we were children. It also felt that we were not welcome in their store, so we left. And as we were leaving, the same woman comes back and says in a sweeter tone, "If you'd like, you can tell us what you were wanting to get and we can measure it out for you to pick up later." It was clear that she was saying this to try to correct her rudeness and weird behaviour, but by then we were beyond done and my friend just said, "No thank you. I'll come back some other time"--which was a platitude because as we left, both of us vowed never to go back to that store again. I am still really, really confused about what happened, about why we were treated like this. I am also really disappointed because I had just recently moved to the area and was excited to have a place so closeby for herbs, sage, and other things for the rituals I do. And then I heard that is was Native-owned which thrilled me even more. But after this weird experience, and also after reading some of the other reviews which sound similar to my own, I'd rather give my money to a business that values and respects me as a customer. My herbalist friend also made a good point. She was saying that one of the reasons she's definitely not going to buy herbs from this place is because it's clear that there's some funky vibes in that store and the herbs that we were trying to buy were being infused with that energy. And she's right. Even if we could just overlook what happened and chalk it up to a bad day (which doesn't seem likely considering there are lots of other reviews who are speaking about rude customer service), why would we want to use herbs of a medicinal nature that were infused with the bad energy of the people who work there? Clary Sage is absolutely wonderful. When I ran out of my old anxiety tea, Laurie handcrafted a blend that was even more potent and successful than my previous. The Serenity Blend tincture is a lifesaver. I was so pleased with the dosage! When I start to feel a bit overwhelmed, I only need a drop to start feeling well again. I wholeheartedly disagree with the previous comment from "AZ": I think Clary Sage is very fairly priced. You're paying for a great product, and the guidance from an Herbalist who knows what she's talking about. Not everyone has the time to harvest, season, and root herbs, and Clary Sage puts in all the work sourcing for those who aren't as knowledgable in foraging or as talented to do so. She even has a wall of resources for those who want to learn! You should give her much more credit. The point is to support local, even if it is easier to buy something cheaper and not as fresh online. This is Portland, after all. read more

I've been a Clary Sage customer for a while and I was always taken aback how Laurie remembered me each time after the first and was always genuinely interested in me. CSH is the most beautiful, well-planned, intentional and most diverse herbal medicine medicinary I've ever been too. And with hot tea everyday, it's an incredibly joyful experience. CSH adds human interaction back into a monetary exchange and that is so rare! Like Kayla, I also disagree with AZ, but I see she's rated everyone in town horribly. Wildcrafting, even herbal farming and processing take a full time job, I mean 1lb of dried Dandelion is HUGE! Plus Laurie is very knowledge and anything you need in the store she probably has or can order. This store maybe be tiny but it has so many items well placed. I have been a loyal customer of Clary Sage for years and I come to this store regularly, even during Covid and it's always been great. Recently, I went to purchase Valerian Root, and they told me that they could not sell it because it had stones in it. Perhaps, because, it's a root? Just kidding. I would not had any problems taking it because I thoroughly filter my herbs, but I respect the decision. However, when I asked about getting replaced they said that they tried to order it a few times and they could not get it. I asked, when was the last time you tried to order it, and they said two months ago. I said that's weird, can I talk to Laurie -the owner- and they said, it's a new owner. Now, everything made sense. Some time when a business gets a new owner things start to go downhill, and unfortunately this is the case with Clary Sage. Fortunately, a simple 20min drive landed me on another herb business who did not have a problem fulfilling a simple valerian root order. read more

This place is an absolute gem. As a bartender, I feel like a kid in a candy store. I came here looking for some very hard to find ingredients to make bitters with. I found what I was looking for thanks to the help of Laurie. I told her what I was wanting to do with the wormwood and she suggested some other alternative bittering agents as well. I made my purchase and left. I was back a few days later having been struck with a wave of creative inspiration. Clary Sage Herbarium is a real find. While visiting I've been in the shop 3 times in 3 days. The smudging area outside the door is so welcome. I picked up some wonderful cards - The Field Guide Deck. Local artist and great feel to them. I picked up White Sage, Palo Santo and Yerba Santa for smudging. A couple of oils are going home with me and some are staying here with family. The feel of the shop is welcoming, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. I went to CSH to reground after getting too much 'city'. When visiting in the future, CSH is at the top of the list. The apothecary is quite extensive, 2 rows deep. The prices are excellent. Holy Basil tea and Astragulas root strips are what I picked up this time. I LOVE this shop. It has been my go-to Herb and Ritual tool shop for years. I've read some of the other reviews and have a slice of perspective to share for anyone who is interested. Speaking to those who have purported a bad energy or unwelcoming vibe, what you likely felt were strong boundaries, and perhaps were not used to that. When you have a public space and invite anyone to come in to that space, such as a shop, you MUST have healthy boundaries for what is and isn't acceptable in that space. Maybe these interactions DID feel rude, dismissive or unnecessary, (yes I've had a blustery experience or two with an employee on a bad day. Side effect of being human) but I would invite you to expand the realm of your vision to include those of the employees and owner who are doing their best to cultivate and maintain safe space for ALL, customers and themselves. This is the best shop for Healing and Magick Herbs in town and I've personally reaped the benefits of the owners proprietary blend of tinctures, which I assure you, are imbued with the most wonderful, loving, intentional energy. Most RACIST herbal shop I've ever been to!!! I cannot capitalize RACIST enough. I, a Black woman, walked in with another Black woman and a white guy (my bf at the time). She never greeted us. And when I tried to get some herbs, the woman at the counter gave me some bullshit comment about not picking up the jars. She then said she was overwhelmed by all of the people in the shop. There were like three people there including me. She didn't give the other two people any attitude. At this point in my life, I know when a white person is uncomfortable with my presence. The shop clears out, she gave some excuses for her attitude (everything but the truth), and overhears that my ex was a well known musician who's music she was a fan of. Her whole tone completely changed! Now she was uber friendly to me. She asked me Black friend from Spokane how she liked living in PortIand, to which she replied, "its passive aggressive. its hard to just be a black person here. everyone pretends to be politically correct, meanwhile they are gentrifying the hell out of all of the neighborhoods". The woman that worked at the shop said "yea, its a shame, I don't know why all of the black and latinos are moving out of the neighborhood. She then asked me boyfriend for a picture to which he politely declined. We left the shop and almost threw up. I was so upset I finished my transaction with her.
