We spent 30 dollars for everything along with 2 canned drinks. The soup was filled with so many wontons that were freshly made. The broth was flavorful. Bugs in food. I ordered a few things from Red Bowl tonight and found a bug in my dish. When I called to let them know and request a refund, they were incredibly rude and required me to come back to the restaurant for a refund and then only refunded me for the dish the bug was found in, regardless of the fact that none of the other food would be eaten. Additionally, they asked for the food back when I requested a refund and were upset to find that some of the food had already been eaten, which leads to believe they were ready to remove the bug and reserve the food to the next customer. read more

Nothing was super amazing but I was over all very happy. The order also came with a thing of sauce with we put over the crispy fish and was delicious. The Chong Quinn spicy dry chicken and the crispy fish were my favorites from the order. The chicken was pretty authentic compared to traditional American Chinese food like pad Thai. I feel obligated to let my fellow eaters know that this place is a generic Chinese take out joint. Nothing more, maybe slightly less. You may think it's something else, it's not. I took it to be a little more advanced, unique, regional (I was thinking Han Dynasty in Philly due to the Chili hot sauce dishes at $16+ each). Nope. It's not. My $25 order for soup and "Szechuan" beef was VERY underwhelming and basic. The beef was in a loose broken broth, that was really just a soup. Not a chili oil. This place is how I made it through college. If you are looking for quick, cheap, take-out Chinese food, this place is probably not for you. While they offer the beef and broccoli/general tso/kung pao chicken and have the appearance of a take-out place, they are much more than that. While I have never really tried any of their dishes that are catered to American tastes, I can attest to them serving some of the best food on Main Street. One of my favorite dishes to get is the curry beef. It resembles Thai curry minus the coconut sauce (which I never liked in the first place). The curry sauce pairs perfectly with their white rice and the meat is tender and flavorful. I also absolutely adore their beef noodle soup. It is definitely a tribute to Taiwan and their rendition definitely lives up to the real deal. The broth is just liquid umami and the beefiness is undeniable. The chunks of beef are also cooked to fall apart perfection. I wish I knew about their Szechuan dishes, but since I came almost exclusively for their lunch specials, I never did try any of it. Overall 2 stars due to mediocre quality and poor value. Ordered the General Tsos combo with pork fried rice with hot and sour soup and "chicken wings". 1. The general tsos sauce was decent, better than the sauce at The Great Wall by far. The trouble was both the texture and the amount of meat you get. While you get many pieces (1/3 of the box), a majority of the pieces were fried dough with very little actual meat attached. Furthermore, the pieces with meat were VERY dry and stringy. 2. The fried rice that I paid $3.50 extra for was terrible. Essentially flavorless besides salty. The pork pieces were very few in between bites of soy sauce rice. There was no "Wok flavor" whatsoever. Big disappointment and would urge others to get the white rice to save on $$$ and calories. The odd yellow fried rice at great wall was better. 3. The hot and sour soup was better compared to Great Wall. HOWEVER, the hot and sour soup was HEAVILY white peppered, to the point that I was drinking white pepper sour soup. The consistency wasn't too thick or thin, which I liked. 4. Alas, the chicken wings. When you order fried chicken wings from a chinese place, you have certain expectations. I.e. You expect to get 4 complete wings, perfectly fried and juicy, placed on a styrofoam plate half-melting-the-styrofoam-kinda-goodness, you know? For $5.50, you get 6-curry powdered small buffalo wings that is overfried and hard/stringy like the general tsos. HUGE hit on its overall quality and value. Finally! A decent Chinese takeout is very hard to find, especially in the Newark/Elkton area. General Tsos is one of my guilty pleasures and unfortunately until now I've had to hold off until I find the time to go to a semi fancy Asian fusion restaurant. Red bowl is the answer to my takeout prayers! The General Tsos chicken is not that breaded slimy meat with the gloopy sauce that I've come to associate with chinese takeout. Instead, the sauce is fresh with chilli peppers and not too sweet, the chicken is all white meat and I can actually identify what I'm chewing. The fried rice is also a plus and any place that adds egg to their fried rice is good in my book. With that being said, I wouldn't dine in, and when you're calling in make sure you're clear with your order because they speak very little English. I like Red Bowl. We started going here after burning out on No. 1 Chinese in the Newark Shopping Center. There food is good, but not great. There is no item on the menu that just pops out and says 'EAT ME', or compels us to go back for more. In all honesty, I haven't tried their higher end menu items, so maybe the braised meats are the 'wow' items I'm looking for. The fried rice is good, but doesn't knock your socks off. I still cannot find a decent fried rice in this town. Next stop Chef Tan. The General Tso's chicken is good, the beef with broccoli is ordinary, and I can't recommend the Spicy Tasty Chicken, which was more like a wet sloppy mess of food. The chicken on a stick are good and popular with our kids, the lo mein is tasty, and the hot and sour soup is better than most I've had. The food is generally fresh and cooked well. They aren't the fastest for carryout, so if you order online and they say 20 minutes, don't bother going any earlier than that. But they aren't super slow either. If you're eating in, it is pleasant enough, and lunch service is acceptably fast. It is nicely decorated, a little dark and intimate, and there is Chinese television always playing, which can be pretty amusing (Chinese telenovelas and game shows....true story). Parking is a pain at that plaza there, especially when school is in session, so you might have to park a block or two away. All in all, better than average. read more

I had the worst experience at this restaurant. My boyfriend ordered a chicken entree and it came out very salty. We asked to please get something else so they took his plate and brought the same plate back out and no surprise, the food was salty again. We asked to get a different entree because the food wasn't bearable to eat so the head chef came out and was extremely disrespectful and refused to make the food again or make anything else and he said "next time order something different." Lasha chicken noodle soup was a bad attempt at a Curry based soup. Rice cake was horrible, definitely not shanghainese style or even close to it.
