This review covers the experience of being a hotel guest and a bar patron. First - the owners/proprietors are top notch. A young family renovated this historic building and did an outstanding job with decor and ambiance. The bar is inviting and comfortable: beer, wine and a limited food menu is available. The lounge areas are lovely and the small store holds some great retro merchandise. The rooms are super clean. The air conditioning works. The towels are thick and really, really nice. The bed was extremely comfortable. No TV. I'd absolutely stay here again in the future.

Root Beer Float

My family and I had dinner at the Tavern last night for the first time. To say we enjoyed it is an understatement. We had appetizers, dinner, and dessert. Each dish was delicious, special, and made with quality ingredients. The servers were friendly and fun to talk with. The decor was stunning. Here's a picture of my root beer float...a work of art. We will definitely be back.

We absolutely loved our stay on The Rose Motel! We were on our way to the Finger Lakes for our anniversary and decided to drive up Friday night and stay somewhere half way. Everything about this place is amazing. The room was super cute and unique. Everything was really nice from the bed, sheets, towels, even down to the soap and hand cream in the bathroom. There was a lot of care put into this place and it's super cozy. Also the continental breakfast was so yummy we decided we didn't need to go out for breakfast.

Every inch felt welcoming and comfortable for our family of four. The waterfall at the Stratton Falls campus was absolutely stunning and incredibly relaxing. Falling asleep to the sound of the water from our deck made the experience feel truly special. Even with the cold weather, there were still plenty of activities to keep our family entertained. Between the waterfalls, game room, Netflix, life-sized chess, foosball, air hockey, the Crooked Cabana bar, hot tub, and dry sauna -- this place truly has it all. A special thank you to Chuck for making our Mother's Day weekend even more memorable than we could have imagined. From the cookies and coffee to the kids' welcome packets, every detail reflected warmth and care. We could not imagine a more family-friendly and welcoming experience. This was our third stay here, and it somehow keeps getting better every time. We already cannot wait to come back again and bring even more of our family with us next time.

Due to unfortunate events (stressful time of year) I had to check out early due to sleepwalking and being unfamiliar with the layout and coming close to falling a few times it was better off for me to be in the layout of my home. I was told I'd get a credit back to my PayPal account but to my utter surprise they put the credit back on a gift card "because I paid the balance in cash". Would have stayed if I knew this prior to leaving and driving back home which was close to 2 hours and under extreme exhaustion. However I truly thought that in the interest of the Roxbury if an ambulance had to be called because my sleepwalking (doesn't stop until I injure myself) it would spare them from the embarrassment of an ambulance showing up in the middle of the night with lights flashing and sirens blaring and a ton load of questions of "what happened" and the rumors that come from people having nothing better to do but make up whatever suits their curiosity. Honestly don't know if I'll go back and now I have a sizeable credit on a gift card that is strictly to their establishment yet it was used in total for the deposit so basically I'm out of cold hard cash because I was trying to spare them the grief and stress of not having any medical personnel on their premises. Next time I'll stay and take that chance of getting injured. It should also be noted that when trying to adjust my reservations the young college aged girl did not want to finish the last bit of the transaction and book the room instead she said "she had a customer that was standing their for 5 minutes" even though I had asked 1. If she had time 2. We were on the final detail of just having her book it for me. But being young comes arrogance. It is very evident that this job is not for her but she's still there anyway. (I called towards the later part of the day when it was close to quitting time). This is also the first place I ever stayed at where you pay the entire balance up front. Every place I ever stayed at prior you pay the remaining balance at checkout. So they are making out hand over fist with this. I will have to do some research to see if this practice is legal and acceptable. So for me it's 3 strikes and you're out. They hit the 3 strikes.

The hotel itself is cozy, full of charming little spaces, and we truly felt pampered throughout our stay. It's pet-friendly (huge plus!), and everyone was incredibly kind to my dog--he had the best time exploring the hiking trails with me. The vibe is very relaxed, peaceful, and the perfect place to disconnect from the world. Now for the real star of the show: the food. We did the tasting menu and it was so good. I loved the intention behind each dish and how they highlighted seasonal ingredients and the local farm sources. My personal favorites were the mushroom dish and the venison--both were phenomenal. The staff was warm, attentive, and did a great job walking us through each course. A few small observations: The dining room was a little too dark--I love seeing my food, especially when it's so beautifully presented. Since it was my birthday, I expected a bit more than a lone candle. No cookie, treat, or even a candle placed on top of dessert--it just didn't feel special. Dessert wasn't for me. It was somewhere between a milkshake and ice cream, but with a strange mochi-like texture and an overpowering amount of lavender. It felt like eating soap. The quail course tasted amazing, but the presentation wasn't appealing. It looked a bit messy, and leaving the head on (even though it wasn't edible) felt off. That said, everything was incredible--thoughtfully crafted, delicious, and visually stunning. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite and the whole experience. Highly recommend--can't wait to return!

My party of 4 was a little early, so we had a drink in the tavern downstairs first; bartender made a great whisky sour. For dinner, we did the a la carte menu. I tried: + Cabbage + Ricotta toast + Grilled broccoli + Mangalista pork chop + Ricotta dumpling + Cheeseburger + Spiced cake The highlights were the cabbage, pork chop and burger. Overall I thought the food was excellent, though I wished they offered sides (especially some type of a potato for the burger). Would have gladly paid for additional sides a la carte.

Farmhouse Catskills

My bf booked a night for us here after receiving a targeted Instagram ad. He's an absolute sucker…read morefor targeted ads, and I must congratulate Farmhouse Catskills on their marketing prowess; however, the marketing strategy gives you a pretty good idea of what you can expect. This place is definitely instagrammable... but unfortunately not much more than that (at least for now). Pros: They've done a seriously beautiful job on the decor- lots of grays and moody dark blues, mid-century furnishings, and prolific use of some of the best artificial tropical plants I've ever seen. All of it is as pretty in person as it is in those Instagram ads. When you walk in, there's ambient music that matches the vibe perfectly. We didn't take a dip in the pool because it was kind of chilly, but I thought it was neat that there was a poolside DJ. It's also worth mentioning that this place is clearly very dog friendly, and as a dog-lover-but-not-owner I was happy to be able to pet so many pups on the property. And there's a decent pool table, yay! Cons: It's pretty clear that this place was sort of hastily opened in an attempt to pull in some cash before the end of the summer, without being adequately prepared and staffed. (It kind of reminded me of one of those house-flipping shows on HGTV.) In our room, one of the ceiling lights still had blue painter's tape around it. The door (which opened to the outdoors) stuck badly, and the knob was not really appropriate for the purpose- more of a closet or bathroom doorknob than something secure for a hotel room- no deadbolt, etc. We had the same troubles with the hot water that another reviewer mentioned. We had to wait almost an hour to get a cocktail at the bar because it was understaffed. I imagine there were just one or two bartenders serving the bar, restaurant, and pool areas. (For the record, the cocktails were nice, though, as was the bartender.) At one point a man who seemed to be more or less in charge of things (but somewhat overwhelmed) was quite rude to us and another couple we were socializing with in the bar area. The morning we were to check out, a housekeeping person opened the door to the room at around 8:30 AM when we were still asleep. She apologized and said, "Oh, my manager said you already checked out!" We said "No, isn't check out at noon?" She confirmed and went on her way. No big deal. But about an hour later, ANOTHER person barges into the room and says her manager told her we had already checked out. (I'm guessing that her manager was the aforementioned overwhelmed guy.) In short: This place has definite potential- again, so pretty!- but it seems the focus right now is aesthetics over experience. At a lower price point I'd probably call it four stars, but at $300/night in the middle of nowhere, I'd expect better management and service. I'd be interested to see if they work out some of the kinks next summer.
