Came to The DeBruce as part of my birthday weekend and stayed the night--overall, I absolutely loved it and would 100% come back. The hotel itself is cozy, full of charming little spaces, and we truly felt pampered throughout our stay. It's pet-friendly (huge plus!), and everyone was incredibly kind to my dog--he had the best time exploring the hiking trails with me. The vibe is very relaxed, peaceful, and the perfect place to disconnect from the world. Now for the real star of the show: the food. We did the tasting menu and it was so good. I loved the intention behind each dish and how they highlighted seasonal ingredients and the local farm sources. My personal favorites were the mushroom dish and the venison--both were phenomenal. The staff was warm, attentive, and did a great job walking us through each course. A few small observations: The dining room was a little too dark--I love seeing my food, especially when it's so beautifully presented. Since it was my birthday, I expected a bit more than a lone candle. No cookie, treat, or even a candle placed on top of dessert--it just didn't feel special. Dessert wasn't for me. It was somewhere between a milkshake and ice cream, but with a strange mochi-like texture and an overpowering amount of lavender. It felt like eating soap. The quail course tasted amazing, but the presentation wasn't appealing. It looked a bit messy, and leaving the head on (even though it wasn't edible) felt off. That said, everything was incredible--thoughtfully crafted, delicious, and visually stunning. I thoroughly enjoyed every bite and the whole experience. My party of 4 was a little early, so we had a drink in the tavern downstairs first; bartender made a great whisky sour. For dinner, we did the a la carte menu. I tried: + Cabbage + Ricotta toast + Grilled broccoli + Mangalista pork chop + Ricotta dumpling + Cheeseburger + Spiced cake The highlights were the cabbage, pork chop and burger. Overall I thought the food was excellent, though I wished they offered sides (especially some type of a potato for the burger). Would have gladly paid for additional sides a la carte. read more

We stayed one Sunday night at the DeBruce and really enjoyed ourselves! Of course we were there for the tasting menu, and it was really a treat. Ben was a FANTASTIC server and super knowledgeable about the wines. The only downside was that the front desk was not always staffed while we were there - 3x during our one night stay we went to go get something / ask a question and couldn't find anyone. We got to our room and realized that there were no towels, and when I went back downstairs I couldn't find anyone anywhere! Since nobody was around, we never got a real tour or introduction to the place, so we wandered around and explored the place by ourselves. I am logging back into Yelp after a two year pause because I feel strongly about my experience at The DeBruce restaurant and need to warn other foodies to steer clear of this restaurant. I went for a birthday dinner to celebrate my friend and we all left supremely disappointed. I usually don't go out of my way to share feedback, but I feel compelled to do so in this case due to the extreme letdown of the dinner. First, the pacing was terrible. We had an 8pm reservation but our last course wasn't served until well after 11pm. Given that the first course of bread was served immediately and the 8th course of petit fours were served in the lobby, it was about 30 minutes between each course which is just too long to wait between courses. I'm a big foodie and I've dined at many of the world's best restaurants (Alinea, NOMA, Eleven Madison Park, Central, Schloss Schauenstein, The Dolder Grand, Le Benardin, etc.) and am used to long dinners, but that was usually for 12-20 courses, not six courses. They'll tell you it's 8 courses but let's be real: the bread served immediately and the petit fours in the lobby served after don't count. Second, the temperature of most dishes was off. Each of the hot fish courses were served lukewarm at best. Third, the flavor / seasoning was off. For example, the second course (the trout) needed both salt and acid. And the madelines, while served nice and hot, were offensively salty. Fourth, no one came by to offer us more wine or drinks. Fifth, my final savory course of fish in wheat berries had a rock! Good thing I didn't chip a tooth. Lastly, the utensil situation was bizarre. We often needed knives but only got a single fork. Sometimes we needed spoons. For example, the Redds dish, served in a wheat berry broth, was served only with a knife and fork. A spoon would have been useful. If a waiter had come to check on us during that course, I would have mentioned it. All in all, we felt neglected and robbed. The combination of poor pacing, lackluster flavor, and mediocre service is unacceptable for a menu with this price point. $500 per couple (with only one drink each) once you factor in tax and tip is just absurd. read more

Wow!! That is how I will begin. We had a reservation in this beautiful lodge. The snow was all around with the beautiful river flowing past. There are heated tents below on the property, along the river for a romantic picnic or just a glass of wine. (Rented for a periods of time) The menu was spectacular. The choices all tasted Devine ! The open kitchen was fascinating to watch the chefs at work . The service was perfect. They had all the answers and even to unexpected questions. We are from California and this restaurant was one of the most Phenomenal food we have ever had . Wow. We came to the Debruce for the tasting menu and liked it so much we came back for the club room two days later. The staff was outstanding! They have all the details really dialed in. Ambiance -- check. Wine list -- spot on (with good natural wine choices). Menu variety -- check. The tasting menu was beyond worth it and I'm still thinking about juniper oil, the mushroom dish, and the poached pear. I never knew I could love a pear entree. Also big ups for the rice pudding dessert! Almost didn't pick it but the kind server brought it to us for free and I'm so glad he did because it was our favorite. The short: this place is magical. If you can afford a night or two away and want to totally unplug, relax & experience nature (physically & in yummy food form)-- I can't recommend this spot highly enough. A 9-course tasting menu and al la carte breakfast is included in your room rate. And, you have access to beautiful, private grounds. The longer: I booked online, but before I booked I chatted with DeBruce staff to see if you get a similar experience on weekdays. Then, after I booked, I got a personalized, detailed email from Christine outlining logistics, reservations & additional excursion opportunities. The DeBruce team corresponded with me about 10 times before we arrived (AMAZING customer service). When you pull up and walk upstairs to the main lobby, you're greeted by a smiley staff member and a personalized note. Andrea showed us our room and gave us the tour of the space-- and they upgraded our room so we could have the en-suite bathroom! We started with a hike on property. They've paved (and maintained) awesome trails and even though the leaves were no longer on the trees- the views were stunning. Then, we decided to sit outside and watch the sunset. Aksel, the chef, lives on property and was around in the kitchen, but when he saw us outside he came out with firewood. We drank wine & beer by the fire. Then, we went inside to the bar, and had some cocktails near another fire, and played cards (they had them on hand). We played and drank for about 2 hours... and in that time we ordered a cheese board. The meats and cheeses were super unique, apple butter was next level, and we tipsily polished that board before heading back up to our room to change. Dinner. Holy shit. This was one of the best meals I've had in 2017: chef Carlos CRUSHED it. Like Aksel, he'd worked the NYC circuit and worked under Chef Tourondel. He prepared a crazy delicious, property-inspired winter meal for us: complete with absurd veal (stew style- fell off the bone), venison (DeBruce is one of 4 vendors for this local venison distributor... others include Blue Hill & Per Se), trout (done 6 ways), a preservation board (honoring the hunter/gatherers historically who'd lived through winters in the area), fowl, mushrooms, and so much more! Breakfast was al la carte & also unbelievable... I had eggs and my partner had the hash. One thing easily promised: you won't leave DeBruce Inn hungry. I truly can't believe we had the incredible experience we had for the ridiculously reasonable price we paid. A very unique and charming bed & breakfast in Livingston Manor! We stayed for only stayed for one night, so we definitely had to try their signature tasting menu - and we were so glad we did! Using all local ingredients, the chef curates season menus that showcase the star ingredients in every course. You'll get to try some really unique items such as snail caviar, venison and hare. A must-try for anyone who visits The Debruce! It was extremely cold the day I went, so unfortunately we couldn't stay outside too long and fully enjoy the 600 acres of outdoor space they have to offer. With that said, we still took our dog on a short walk on one of their hiking trails and he had a blast! Besides that, the inn itself is quaint with lots of charming little touches (swing on porch, fireplaces) which make it so cozy. For $125 plus tip the dinner was starvation, some courses were unsalted weeds from the road curb. Not joking. Zero salt and "hyper" local. 6 courses took 3 very long hours after which they kicked us out to the lobby. Whaaaat? Never had a tasting menu where I had to serve myself and try to find an empty seat in a lobby for 1/3 of the dinner. Women's bathroom is broken and everyone is forced to use a single stall of the men's room. Really don't see this operation lasting long. read more

The experience was simply wonderful from start to finish: the service was impeccable (thank you for everything, Lindsey!!!!), the rooms are rustic and cozy, the living room / lounge area is warm and welcoming. And the food is absolutely incredible. Every last bite. There are hiking trails of your choosing, a pool, wonderful Adirondack chairs to relax in outside, and a little game room downstairs. My wife and I just got back from a wonderful night at the DeBruce celebrating our 2nd wedding anniversary. The entire experience was perfect, and the staff were all warm, welcoming, and extremely accommodating the entire time. We stayed in the corner queen room and although the room wasn't huge it was really comfortable and the details/decor were simple but lovely (and the clawfoot tub wasn't bad either). Starting even before we checked in, the staff was very communicative and helpful in arranging a guided nature hike and relaxing spa treatment at their sister property Kenoza Hall, and even helped me shift around our reservations when rain threatened our hike. We also had dinner at the restaurant and the tasting menu was exceptional and a really special experience from beginning to end. Every dish was unique and delicious, and I'd highly recommend it. They even built us a fire in the sitting room to enjoy after dinner while we finished our wine. Incredible! All in all we would definitely recommend The DeBruce to anyone looking for a romantic getaway or special occasion destination. read more

Very unique dining. Their menu changes seasonally. There is a tasting menu but i think that's only given on the weekends. We went on a Monday and they have a set menu that cost $100 per person. You can pick 2-3 small plates to share, one entree and one dessert. The portions are super small!! But food was delicious!! We were definitely still hungry after the meal. Best dishes were the raw oyster - it was very fresh. The ricotta cheese was amazing. I also liked the pork. Very flavorful. We were camping at Mongaup campground and needed a place to go to past 9. Found this place on yelp that opened till 10:30 and decent reviews. From the campground, it was a 10 min ish drive. The place is part of an inn that is quite charming. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very inviting and not pretentious. My wife got the trio of trout which included 2 tacos, croquet, and something else I couldn't remember. It was pretty good and wasn't dry at all. I had the spicy wings which was really good. Nice big wing pieces so you know it was made fresh. My son got the burger which came as 2 sliders. The kids were able to play this shuffleboard game they had at the premise which they love. Ample parking but poor WiFi due to rain. I give it a very strong 3 stars. read more

What an amazing experience! Stayed 4 nights over the holiday weekend and was so impressed with the beautiful grounds and cozy lobby and lounge area. The rooms have everything you need and sleep like a dream! The staff was so welcoming and attentive to our needs, from providing recommendations of things to do in the area or items needed for the room. But the food was the star! There wasn't much flavor to my trouts; the squash was ok, and the microgreens were what they claimed they were - micro. We have traveled all over the world and this was the most overpriced, frustrating stay we have had. Our room could barely fit a queen size bed and it wasn't a real bed. It was a broken down futon that left both of us with tweaked back and neck. There was nowhere to hang clothes and no dressers. There was barely anyplace to set things such as cell phone, keys, wallet etc. The water pressure or lack thereof created a problem showering every single time. The food was okay but certainly not nearly what would be expected to justify the expense. If your schedule or other commitments prevent you from eating at the assigned times, you are pretty much out of luck. The breakfast menu was the same all three days we were there. The shirred eggs were so over spiced as to make them inedible. The young men at the front desk were pleasant. read more

Great atmosphere. Really outstanding. The concierge service is excellent as well, and the walking grounds are fantastic. We were not hotel room guests so cannot speak to that experience. The downstairs dining room service needs work. No vegetarian options and not kid friendly food wise. Also our server was inexperienced and charged us for a different Pinot Noir than the one we ordered- a price difference of about $30. When pointed out it was blamed on someone else, the server did not own up to it as they should have after reviewing the check on a not so busy night. Overall, we were disappointed but we like the atmosphere and the potential too much to get into more detail on the flaws. Just go and hope you have a better experience. read more

Stopped into the "Club Room" at The DeBruce for dinner this evening so this review is for that. I have heard a lot about the tasting menu option here for a while, although when I called I was told I have to make the reservation in advance (24 hours) and will be charged the full price of the dinner (approximately $100 pp) if I need to cancel. I am not sure that is a fair policy, so I decided that wouldn't be an option I would ever explore. The menu in the Club Room was limited but, we decided to have a burger and the pasta. The pasta was really well made but the portion was tiny. For $22, I was hoping for more than the equivalent of 5 ravioli. The burger meat was delicious but I did not enjoy the duck confit or micro greens on the burger. Lastly, each glass of wine was upwards of $10 and I found that to be a bit extreme for a Monday night in a completely empty restaurant in a fairly desolate area. All in all, the place is cute and the food was well prepared, however the prices are a bit extreme. If they added a happy hour for the Club Room, I would definitely be interested in making this a place I return more often. read more

Stayed here for 2 nights for our minimoon and it was the perfect spot to unwind following the wedding whirlwind. The staff was warm and friendly and accommodating and the rooms are clean and nicely appointed (we enjoyed the claw foot tub in our room).The highlight though is the incredible food. We caught the 9 course tasting our first night with wine pairing and it was perfectly indulgent. I am not a breakfast person but I thoroughly enjoyed breakfast every morning. The smoked trout is exceptional, I could eat it every day. I am looking forward to returning in the fall/winter to cozy up around the fireplace with a hot beverage. read more

Ate upstairs once and service was awful which is shocking since that is meant to be a special experience and there were only two tables. Ambiance upstairs in the dining room is lacking. There was a gigantic vase of flowers with smelly water. The tables are built in and not everyone can take in the view. too bad, poor planning. It was a very long night being held hostage by someone who was clearly too good for us. but! we did like the food! just not the experience which was torture. We will always return to the clubroom!!!! Hey Guys - It's been a while. The DeBruce is a newly renovated upscale B&B tucked in Livingston Manor, NY. Catie, Sadie (YES pet friendly) and I were looking for a relaxing Fall weekend out of NYC and The DeBruce delivered. It took us about two hours from midtown, w/ classic Friday GW Bridge traffic, to get to Livingston. Upon arrival, Christine (unofficial day/night time manager) welcomed us with a big smile and gave us a guided tour of the grounds. The rooms were clean, nicely decorated and comfortable (Catie enjoyed a "clawfoot bath"). The DeBruce has a unique business model incorporating breakfast & dinner into the nightly cost of your stay. I say unique because most people associate a typical B&B breakfast as boxed cereal and Tropicana OJ sans pulp. And dinner would be a nonevent . Not at The DeBruce. Friday night was four course dinner with locally sourced vegetables, cheese and poultry. Being famished from a long work week we both ordered the NY Strip Steak, perfectly cooked, w/ a local yet tasty herb butter...WOW. Following dinner we took the stairs to The DeBruce's pub for a few cocktails. As the kitchen and B&B staff were finishing up for the night they joined us for a night cap. They were all very outgoing and engaging even though they were "off the clock"....nice touch. Breakfast Duck Hash (picture below) w/ Chef Aksel homemade hot sauce was first class! Pro tip - ask for a side of the sauce for potato dunking! The DeBruce has an open concept kitchen where patrons see Chef Aksel & his team hard at work. Our Saturday consisted of a morning 6 mile hike w/ Sadie into a private Yoga class which The DeBruce offers Saturday mornings. The property is ~600 acres w/ plenty of hiking trails or casual walks along the Willowemoc Creek. Being early Fall it was too cold for the pool, but we did enjoy a midday outdoor fire before heading into town to taste local beers at Roscoe's Brewery for their annual Octoberfest. We spent the afternoon relaxing, reading, and listening to jazz in The DeBruce's den. Dinner Saturday evenings was Chef Aks nine course tasting menu that rotates depending on season and local sourcing ability. The meal was not your standard tasting menu; it was creative, fresh, food forward and most important "for me" filling. From what I could gather and observe, Chef Aksel decided to leave the NYC restaurant scene for this unique opportunity to run this B&B w/ a culinary forward vision.Net net we, Sadie included, enjoyed our stay will encourage our friends to visit and we will be back!! read more

Book ahead, hard to get a table but totally worth it (~20 ish seat restaurant). Everything was wonderful, it is hard to pick favorites, you will be pleasantly surprised over and over as each course comes. The food here is amazing and totally worth all the hype it gets. Besides the awesome 9-course tasting menu, the dinner Friday and the breakfasts both Saturday and Sunday morning were quite amazing. We tried the french omelette, the duck hash, and the pancakes (twice), and nothing disappointed. The hotel itself is pretty nice and upscale and the rooms, while not large, were perfectly adequate. We enjoyed the common areas (the fireplace especially) quite a bit. The hike in the property behind the hotel was very nice, it was a bit icy in February but definitely doable with decent hiking boots. We did the blue trail which was pretty easy and took about an hour to enjoy. All in all this is the perfect weekend escape from the city and we are longing to go back in the summer! read more

This review is about the restaurant at DeBruce: Amazing service, wonderful presentation, beautiful setting, inconsistent coursing but such great potential! We came for the prix fixe, as we were looking for a bit more of an upscale meal in the Catskills for a personal celebration. It had all of the makings of a five star experience, but the courses were a bit disjointed, like a confusing playlist. Our first three courses were incredible; a refreshing tomato/mouse melon/basil dish, a perfectly smoked trout with dill flower, and a curiously delicious snail & snail roe pastry. The trout was definitely the absolute highlight. The follow up, aside from a mushroom dish, were creative interpretations of camping/cafeteria meals. From a broccoli and cheese, corn on the cob, covered in popcorn, to a pork and beans in a canteen tin. This portion of the meal, we were less enthused about. We had no issue with what was obviously an attempt at innovating on ordinarily low-brow foods. But the execution was a tad lacking. Most of this portion was overly salted. The broccoli and cheese was a tiny serving of a broccoli cream base with a mountain of salty cheese crisps. It was more like cheese accented with broccoli. Had the broccoli portion been 3x as much, and 1/10 of the cheese crisps, I think it could work. The summer corn was over cooked but, it was deliciously sweet, and the presentation was amazing. The corn were skewered on iron rods hung on a wrought iron stand. So cool and unique. The shiitake dish with mushroom sausage and a mushroom reduction was so close to a truly wonderfully dish packed with umami, but was marred again by an overly enthusiastic amount of salt. And they finished on the pork and beans with venison sausage. I think I'm biased, as I'm not a huge fan of beans in general, but this as a final course fell a bit flat for me. Also, ahhhh again, why sooo much salt! By the end, our tongues were a bit raw from what felt like being cured from the inside out. If all the dishes eased up on the sodium, it would have already made a huge difference, so that we could taste the complex flavors behind it. The cheese portion was fun, with a diverse and unique selection, and we loved that we were escorted to the lounge portion of DeBruce to enjoy the local offerings. The dessert was a bit disappointing as it was mostly just ok chocolates and macarons. But I don't believe they currently have a pastry chef. Given the scale, it probably doesn't make business sense yet. Though it didn't quite meet our expectations, since it's still relatively new, we think there's a LOT of potential here, with all the right vibes and service. We're excited to give it another chance next year, as the place evolves. We have no doubt they will improve, as all of the elements are all there. The worst "chef tasting" I've ever experience. It was literally amateur hour. The food was bland, mostly all vegetables with some sort of cheese. Starter was a slice of tomato with goat cheese on the bottom.. fine I thought it would get better... Everything was just bland, boring, not creative, not tasteful, nor colorful, some items were super salty, One of the dishes was a corn in a cob... It was a piece of Boiled corn, dipped in HEAVY butter, with popcorn topping, really? The best thing was probably the white bean soup, thankfully I got it without the pork. The sweets, lol, store bought chocolates and cheeses from "local" farms. The service was good, even tho the waiters descriptions of the food was hilarious..... "Most of all the ingredients came from farms across the back hill". Exact descriptions. Nothing about this dinner impressed me, sad because the hotel is lovely and the grounds are really beautiful. read more

This is a truly special place. From the moment you arrive until the moment you leave you are treated so well. The people who work here are happy and passionate about what they do, and that really shines. The rooms are very nice with special touches and the property has so much to offer. Hiking, fishing, and so many little spots to sit and relax and enjoy nature, with outdoor fire pits. Lastly, the food. This was one of, if not the best meal I have ever had (and coming from SF that says a lot!), this was next level. Every bite was delicious, well rounded and unique. Well what can I say. This review is for the DeBruce 9 course tasting menu. We live near Woodstock and drove for 1.10 minutes to sample the DeBruce tasting menu. I have to say that we travel a lot and are foodies by heart. My husband and I both felt the same way. Every course was Devine in its own right. The flavors and presentation was perfect. The waitress was amazing. And the whole experience was absolutely 5 star. There was only one other couple on a Monday night and they were just oohing and ahhhing as well. I don't know how any bad review can make it's way here cause the DeBruce killed it last night. Our stay at the hotel was simply magical. Starting from the drive up there on this quaint little country road up until check out, was perfect. I had no idea what to expect having never stayed at such a small Inn/Hotel before. We were greeted by the most friendliest staff Sam and then later Chourtney, I can't remember everyone else's names but everyone was just so charming and accommodating. When we got to the room we were a little disappointed by the size of the suite, it was much smaller than expected but it was clean, fresh and very cozy. The decor was simple and super homey. We started our stay with a hike on the hotels grounds, which is a beautiful easy walk. It felt so private like we had the whole forest to ourselves. Then came dinner which was probably the highlight of our stay. The menu was A la carte, so we asked our server to just have the chef prepare anything he thought we should try..... and so the fun began, each dish was better than the next. I would list them all but I would need to write an essay just describing all the courses. Everything was plated so beautifully with the freshest ingredients. After finishing all the creative dishes I mentioned how amazing everything was and can only imagine how good their simple cheeseburger would be.......and so the chef made us each one!!! Needless to say we managed to finish it and it was one of the best we have ever had. We ate until we had to be carried out of the dining room. Breakfast and lunch the next day was wrapped up to go so we took it along on our morning hike. The food even though prepackaged was just as gourmet and delicious as dinner had been. Incredible restaurant and worth the trip from NYC. Every time we leave the city we take 17 to the DeBruce. One of these days I plan to stay overnight since it's a little slice of heaven in the Catskills. read more

To keep it precise and simple I guess been around the block a long time so good = ok. Better = step above good. Best = above better well this place in all areas food, help,surrounds the very best. Expensive but a bargain in most ways. Tasting 9 course meal above and beyond. read more

Cosy, pretty hotel in the perfect Catskills location. Lots of activities to do and fabulous meals at the restaurant. Clean and lovely, only issue was no closet or place to hang clothes and bags in the small bedroom. Hospitality and service A+, we had an issue with our rental car and all the staff, especially one of the chefs RJ, were so helpful to get us back on the road. Thanks for the stay! Highly recommended for anyone looking to get out of New York for the weekend and breathe some fresh countryside air! read more
