We've been patronizing the Red Steer for a number of years now as we have a cottage nearby. We have ordered loin sections of beef, purchased steaks, sausages, ribs, briskets ... and never been disappointed. You might pay a little more than the grocery stores, but the meat is cut to perfection. The steaks are trimmed to have just enough fat to cook them and most of it is gone by the time you take them off the grill. This place is a gem in cottage country. Just 15 minutes south of Bancroft, it's worth going out of your way to stop in. I needed enough flank steak to feed seven adults and three kids, and the owner Dwayne suggested the perfect quality so that everyone was full (plus leftovers for my lunch sandwich the following day). read more

I've always made this a stop if I'm in the area. The meat has always been outstanding in quality until my last trip through. Ordered two 10-12 oz. strip loins and a four pack of burgers. We were disappointed by the strip loins. Although quite tasty, the meat was somewhat stringy in texture. A first for meat purchased here. The burgers were good but seemed to have something added as a filler. The prices are pretty steep as well. Maybe I caught the place on an off day. I'll give them one more try when I get a chance. read more

If you're like me, you love to support local businesses over homogenous, corporate giants when you're travelling. So, when the grrlfriend and me were planning a delicious barbecue dinner while away at our rented cottage retreat, sure, we could have shopped at the No Frills in Bancroft, Ontario... but why? Just a little further south on Highway 62 stands the bull's horn-bedecked, firewood-selling, off-the-road meat-eater's Mecca of the Red Steer. Good God. Owner Wayne doesn't sell online, and happily boasts that he barely knows how to turn a computer on, so you'll have to trust me when I tell you that his choices for prime rib burgers, London broil, wild Digby sea scallops are outstanding. He and his partners fashion sausage to die for, available in honey-garlic farmstyle, garlic and chive, maple, apple, sundried tomato, leek and black pepper, and the various Italian standards. Steaks are cut to order, chickens are local and grain fed, and he doesn't mind at all when you ask him for wooden skewers to barbecue your vegetables on because you didn't plan ahead well enough to bring your own for your vacation's meal plan. Cool dude. Yeah, yeah, it's about 250 kilometres northeast of Toronto... but, hey, you really think you'll find something better at Loblaw's on St. Clair? Trust me. read more

I have family who have lived in Cardiff (Bancroft) for decades now and somehow no one seemed to know of this place! Our loss! It's a wee bit out of the way, and you'll likely zip by it on 62, but it is absolutely worth the trip. Steaks are aged in-house and cut to order. Sausages are made in-house and are delicious. They are made fresh mid-week (Wed.-Thurs.) and go quickly. The sweet heat sausage is top notch. The best sausage I have ever had. Hands down. We're making our way through the offerings and to date we have tried the following: ribeye steak (buttery), beef tenderloin (the best), prime rib burgers (delicious), salmon (great), pickerel (great), Cajun catfish (outstanding), mild pepperettes (delicious) and local mushrooms (superb)! All of their products are hormone and preservative free. They even make their own hot dogs. We're looking forward to trying the poultry - flat chickens and turkeys are said to be excellent too. read more

I moved up to the area Dec 2012. I'd read about the Red Steer on yelp and thought I'd check it out. Wow! Meatapaloza! Its as nice as any butcher shop you'll find anywhere. Everything is cut fresh or made fresh, I even scored some fresh made alligator sausage right here in Bancroft. Awesome place, when you're around you gotten check it out. read more

This butcher shop is a meat shop you simply don`t want to miss out on. The meat is good quality natural meat. I have bought their hand made sausages. They are to die for and the owner is very friendly and nice and makes you want to come back. The sausages are made with real ingredients and I mean real. This quaint, old fashioned, little store has the best beef anywhere! Owners Dwayne and Julie will cut your steaks anyway you want them. They sell only top quality meats which are hormone and antibiotic free - they even have certified organic beef and pork if you want it. I usually buy my beef by the quarter or half and it is always cut up the way I want and at an unbeatable price.
