This is by far one of the best restaurants I've ever been to. We walked in an immediately were greeted very nicely. The service was quick and polite. I order the Swordfish dinner. It was absolutely incredible. It was a little expensive, but when the food is as delicious as it is, the price doesn't look so big. It was well worth the money. We just left the River GrI'll after celebrating my parents 89th and 90th birthday. It was perfect. Perfect view, perfect Waite staff, perfect margaritas and the perfect variety of food. There were many excellent choices on the lunch menu, all reasonably priced. The ribs were delicious, cooked to perfection. My Craser salad was large and topped with an abundance of Cajun chicken slices. The rest of the party had hamburgers and all sermed pleased. My mom said the sweet potato fries were the best she ever had and at 89 "ever" is saying it all. The river grill. First thing! Steven is the man. If you come here request Steven. He is extremely knowledgeable on food and makes a refreshing specialty cocktail. The river grill is located on the Newburgh waterfront. There is outdoor and indoor seating. The outdoor seating boasts fantastic views of the Hudson River and the Newburgh-beacon bridge. On a summers day you will see the boats coming and going from the dock. The food at the river grill is American/ seafood. There menu is diverse. Ask about the specials. They offer 2 main menus. The first is a lunch menu. The other is a dinner menu. The difference in lunch and the dinner menu are the main courses. The appetizers pretty much are the same on both menus + or - a few things. The reason I know is the owner was nice enough to have me look over all 3 of the spring menus before they launched. Really cool stuff. Can't wait to try some of the spring items. On to the food. I ended up taking Stevens recommendation for the filet mignon quesadilla with BBQ. The quesadillas were fantastic. Then I ordered a soft shell crab sandwich. The chef said they just ran out of soft shell and would have more in tomorrow. So I asked Steven if they had any fish tacos. Steven went in the back. Came out and said we have some nice tuna. The chef is going to make you tuna special. Tuna tacos. The tuna was cooked perfectly. Nice medium rare with some home made pineapple chutney and lettuce. I like how the chef but the tomato pickle and onion on the side. The tacos were fantastic. The one thing I recommend at the river grill would be the calamari it always comes out tender. You can get everything from burgers. To a spinach and portabella wrap. The salads looked good. Cajun salmon salad and Seared breast of duck salad. The staff and owner are very friendly and accommodating. The owner and one of the other waiters introduced themselves to me. The owner was joking around and you could tell the atmosphere was fun. When I am home upstate i come to the waterfront for food. In Newburgh there aren't too many higher end eateries. One of my best friends grandfather owns a restaurant and part of the waterfront. I am down here quite a bit. Have a drink or hot tea and look at the water. It's one of my simple pleasures when I'm upstate. Overall. It's nice to have a place like the river grill where you receive good quality food without paying $30-40 per person without drinks. I will defiantly be back. I do recommend coming to the river grill for lunch if you are in the area. Ask to be seated outside and enjoy the scenery. We went to The River Grill for lunch with 7 adults and 4 children based on my brother and sister in law's recommendation. Sat outside as the view is really amazing of the river and the other side. Server came over for immediately to take our drink orders and tell us the daily specials. The kids meals came out quickly but were fish instead of chicken. So from here things went straight downhill. Another meal was missing cheese on the burger and they totally forgot my meal. Eventually the kids meals came out almost an hour after we sat down. Mine showed up just before theirs. So 6 of the 11 meals were wrong. The Manager did stop to apologize and we are not sure where the issue came between the server or cook staff. No offer of any kind to address the mess. This is one of many overrated restaurants on the Newburgh waterfront. While the view is nice, our server had an incessantly annoying voice, and she was only an okay waitress (the manager was great though). Thats forgivable though. What isn't is that the food is lacking in flavor across the board. The olive topping and butter they give you with are exceptions to this rule. We had the clams with chorizo etc. to start, and while it was a generous portion, everything from the chorizo down lacked flavor. In addition, they overcooked the clams a bit, which left they somewhat rubbery. I had a steak for my entree, which could've had a little more flavor and needed to be trimmed better (I like a little fat, but this was ridiculous). The sauce it came in was devoid of flavor, barely any mushrooms and leeks which were supposed to come with, but I will say that the potato croquette was surprisingly great. I can usually recall everything I eat at a restaurant even months later. That I can't recall what I got at this place two weeks out displays how forgettable this place is. As a server with 30 plus years experience, I have to say that not only was the food delicious, the entire staff is busy ensuring great service. Everyone ( the owner,host,busboy and servers) is working the floor! There are no idle employees at this establishment... they are a team and work well together. They were extremely busy and short staffed (only 2 servers) but continued to work as a team. Our server, Jeanine was sweet and very pleasant. The busser, Dillion was courteous and on point. The River Grill oozes romance and charm, especially when you come on a beautiful, sunny day and sit on the patio overlooking the river. The food is tasty and upstate NY prices, so for this jaded Manhattanite, everything was a win. We got the Shrimp Pasta special with tomato and garlic wine sauce, as well as the Smoked Salmon Pastrami with fries. Large portions and an abundance of seasoning made everything feel even heartier after our kayaking excursion. The winning cocktail of the table was the delectable Toasted Coconut Margarita, but the White Pink Sangria is a good one to share with the group. Surprised to see the poor service reviews from others, as our party of 6 had a fantastic, funny waiter and never too much trouble getting a water glass filled. The food was fine. The bread was hard and not fresh, the caesar salad had random mandarin oranges that I'm pretty sure weren't supposed to be in it, and my steak was very overcooked. I sent the steak back and it came back much better than the first time. The staff was respectful and friendly but not very attentive. And the service was SLOW (seemed to be the kitchen and not so much our waitress). It took 45 minutes to get the starter salads, a minimum of 30 minutes to get a water refill, and 60+ minutes to get our entrees (party of 3). The only reason I'm giving this 2 stars, is because of its location! We were not pleased with anything leaving here. Our drinks took about 30 minutes, which were okay but extremely small with lots of ice for $13. Our appetizer, "the river grill steamers", were very salty. Our entrees took an hour and a half after ordering them and IT WAS NOT WORTH THE WAIT. The "rags to riches" had no flavor what so ever, the sauce was very very thin, and the shrimp was extremely overcooked and tough. I understand that sometimes you're understaffed or you have a big crowd, but our waitress was very inattentive and we barely saw her. Overall, we were there for over 2 hours. This is supposed to be a higher end restaurant. I think most people come here for the river view. The fillet mignon is good. The asparagus is over cooked and soft. Caesar salad dressing is acid and sour. Mashed potato has not much taste. The worst thing is my decaf coffee made me sleepless whole night. (I guess they served me regular even I emphasized DECAF). This is after COVID-19 first time eat out. We choose sit indoor and it is 50% occupancy. Outdoor sitting was crowded. Waitress is super busy. Out service was slow. We were disappointed. The River Grill is another example of a restaurant that could be excellent if it executed better. The location, sitting directly on the Hudson, with views of the docks and boat, is lovely. The breeze is lovely, especially on a warm July 4th afternoon. Parking can be a hassle, but it was July 4th, after all. Service was also fine: friendly and prompt. The problem is the food. The kitchen seems to have a microwave fetish. How could I tell? The rice and vegetables had uneven temperatures: Some parts were warm, even a bit hot, while other parts were cool. That's really difficult to do with an oven or a stovetop or a rice cooker, but really, really easy to do with a microwave. Similarly, my wife swore that the salmon burger and crab cake were frozen, not fresh. My lobster tail was decently good, but the fact that the temperature wasn't consistent throughout the tail again suggests a microwave was involved. If the River Grill improves the food and starts cooking fresh, this easily good be a lovely place. read more

My fiance just had her bridal shower at this place and it was absolute crap. Servers were arrogant and lazy. I arrived with my fiancé 20 minutes after the party started and nobody had drinks and that included water and sold a (which was included). When asked if they could put it on the table the response was "we don't have pitchers". Really! When servers finally did get the energy to get off their asses the response to drink requests was an eye roll. My sister-in-law ordered several mimosas (from inside cause again, nobody bothered to take orders outside) and walked away while the bartender started making them. My other sister-in-law happened to walk by the bar only to hear the bartender complain about how many mimosas he had to make. Could there be an easier cocktail to make? Lazy lazy lazy. Marilee (the manager) was the worst of everyone. Poor attitudes and work ethic start at the top. She quoted for a Bloody Mary bar which was one of the key reasons why we had the party there. 2 weeks before the party she back peddled and said that it wasn't included and only mimosas and regular bloodies. She said to make it a "bloody mary bar" would have costed an additional $14 per person. So basically that extra $14 per person would have been for condiments. A bit ridiculous. Last, but certainly not least, the day of the party Marilee called to ask if we wanted to move the party indoors since it was so hot out. At first I thought they were being nice and worrying about the comfort of their guests. After this party I now know it was because their lazy staff didn't want to work outdoors in the heat. Guess it was to hard for them. The only saving grace was the food was decent. Thank god it was buffet though or else no food would have ever been serve Sorry for the rant.... to sum up..... never eat here, never consider having a party here and if you do decide to take a chance make sure you get Marilee's bullshit quote on paper so she does t get Combe isn't amnesia the days leading up to the party. We wanted to enjoy a leisurely dinner but not to the point where the busboy and waitress thought we were done with our dinner when in fact we hadn't even ordered dinner yet. We had a terrible dinner here. The hostesses were unwelcoming, there was a long wait to place our order, our food took almost 2 hours to come, and they stopped refilling our water toward the end. There was a super awkward interaction with the manager(?) when she came to ask how things were, noticed that two of us hadn't gotten our food yet, and said "Oh, I see you haven't gotten your food yet" and moved on to the next table. Didn't give us a chance to give our feedback, didn't apologize for the slow kitchen, didn't even pretend she was going to look into anything or help. Pretty much reflects the whole experience. Salads were small and sad, steak was tough, paella was soupy, everything was overpriced. For $30 a plate the service and food should have been exceptional, not below average. Check your bill carefully if you decide to patronize this establishment. We went there with a few friends for dinner last night. The service was horrible And the food was average. When the bill came all the couples put in a set amount to pay the bill. Everyone put in cash except for me. I have the waiter my credit card and told him to put the rest on my credit card. The amount that I should've been charged was $98. However when I got my bill he charge me $198. When I confronted him his response was my bad and reached into his pocket and hand me back my hundred dollar bill that he tried to steal. It was so obvious the way they did not make a mistake he is definitely done this before and will definitely do it again. If you go to this restaurant make sure you know the exact amount of your bill and what you put down because if you get that waiter he will try and steal your money. read more

One of the worst dinner experiences I've ever had. If I hadn't been with a large group for a good friends birthday I would have left. When we arrived they hadn't set up enough tables for the group and three of us, even after bringing it to the attention of the staff, stood there for five minutes until someone came out to address the issue. We were seated outside. Even though it was a fifty degree windy night the management decided not to put up the plastic walls on the tent covering the outdoor seating area. Only when I told a waiter that our party was freezing did they do a half assed job of putting up only the wall closest to our table. The drinks were improperly made and we almost had to beg for them. Come on, it's a big group in their 20's and gratuity is included, the entire table should not have sat there with empty glasses and have to flag down a waitress to get refills. The icing on the cake was my medium-rare lamb that came out well done. The sauce was tasty and it could have been a decent dish if it were served even close to how I ordered it. I finally found some good food in the Newburgh area. After two awful meals at local diners the day before, I was determined to have a meal that wouldn't leave me with regret afterwards. I decided to go to the most upscale area I could find which, in Newburgh, is down by the waterfront. I wandered into the River Grill around 1pm and, since they were still serving brunch, decided to dine there. I ordered the eggs Benedict which is my standard test to see if a breakfast spot is any good. The Hollandaise sauce here was great -- rich and creamy with the perfect amount of lemon. The home fries were a pretty weak offering but I was so happy to have some good eggs Benedict that it didn't matter. This place is a little more expensive than the standard places in this town -- $9 or $10 for breakfast instead of $6 or $7 -- but it's well worth it in my opinion. One more thing worth noting is that the pancakes weren't very good so I'd avoid those. They have an outdoor patio with a great view of the Hudson river which adds to the atmosphere. If you want a good meal in Newburgh, the River Grill is a solid choice. read more

We visited on a snowy January Saturday. Lunch was delicious. The grilled shrimp on my arugula and fig salad were "large", fresh and abundant. My husband enjoyed the French opinion soup and buffalo chicken Caesar salad. The views of the frozen Hudson were simply spectacular, and it was great looking at the icy Hudson from the warmth of the restaurant. First time diner at this restaurant and first time visitor to the area. We had just spent a beautiful Saturday at the Storm King Art Center and were looking for an area restaurant, and the River Grill appeared on TripAdvisor's top restaurants in Newburgh, and with a river view to boot. So we decided to try it around 6 PM on Saturday. It was great to see the lively Front Street area and to walk along the river promenade, definitely a highlight of the evening. The restaurant, not so much. The bottom line is that the food was mediocre and pricey. My chicken and pasta dish consisted of a few ounces of chicken sautéed in a wine/garlic sauce with some very al dente pasta and some spinach, and a small side salad. This should cost $15-$18 in most reasonably priced neighborhood restaurants. The entrée cost $28.95. My wife had stuffed shrimp, which were largely stuffed with breadcrumbs and not the advertised crab meat. Hers was $29.95. Neither dish was particularly tasty or memorable but if they were $10 cheaper at least it would've been acceptable. As it is, the next time we're in the area we will be trying one of the other restaurants along the street. read more

We are in from out of town and were able to easily make a reservation for 11. However we were not impressed with our order. Out of 11 dishes, 5 came out incorrect. One burger came without cheese and the 4 kids chicken fingers came out as fish and chips. The kids waited another 40 minutes for chicken fingers... The view was nice, the bus boy was very polite, but the food was sub par. Update : the manager did contact us almost immediately following our review.
