OMG!!!! Jimmy and Crew to the rescue! Played golf this afternoon, and didn't feel like cooking and cleaning dinner.....decided to stop by The River Market to see what they had... As I walked past the front window to enter, Jimmy and one of his amazing employees both waved at me..... I reminisced of my days living in Manhattan, when you knew your mongers....this place is as I remember the local delis and small stores I frequented... I walked in the door to an amazing aroma, and when asked if I could be helped, I asked what was on the plan for dinner. Pork loin, ancient grains, and baked apples. At first I hesitated, but the aroma......... OMG, this is the MOST AMAZING pork loin I have EVER had....and the ancient grains and apples? PERFECTION. GO here. Just ask for whatever is for dinner, don't question. Oh, and their steaks are amazing. As is EVERYTHING else in the fridge section. And the wine selection. And the desserts (NY cheesecake!) just go here. Order anything. ENJOY. And thank this beautiful, sweet man, who works his as* off every day to make you the superhero of dinner!!! read more

Stopping at The River Market was a great experience while staying at nearby The Tides Inn. It's a small market with all the frill you'd want in a small-town shop- decorations, a deli in the back, and great customer service. My wife and daughter enjoyed a box of mac and cheese that they warmed up in the microwave up front. My Philly cheesesteak was very fake looking, but tasted not bad. Before we left, a worker gave our five-year-old daughter a bag of fresh chocolate chip cookies that she loved! read more

Stopped here on our way out of town this Sunday and picked up a few items from the case. We brought home crab cakes, salmon dip, pork barbecue, and a cheese pizza. Everything was AMAZING - incredibly fresh and delicious. The crab cakes especially stood out. I know my way around a crab cake, and theirs were really special. The owner was warm and welcoming, and we enjoyed chatting with him for a few minutes. He was in the middle of making a huge tray of ham biscuits that looked absolutely mouth-watering. If we hadn't just come from breakfast, we would definitely have grabbed some of those for the road! We will be sure to stop by again any time we are in the area. read more

I love this place. The staff is fantastic and go out of their way to take care of you. They have all kinds of interesting things for sale. I have bought a lot of wine here - they have an eclectic selection of good, reasonably priced wine. The star of the show is their barbecue. I am a barbecue fanatic and am very particular about it. The great big barbecue sandwiches they sell at lunchtime are outstanding! It is worth going out of your way to get. I dinged them a star because they don't always time the fries to be ready when the sandwich is. A couple of times they were limp and soggy with cooking oil. On the other hand, their fries have a richer potato-ey taste than elsewhere and are absolutely delicious when you get them fresh from the fryer. At such times, no other place I've dined in the Northern Neck can touch their fries. It's worth going out of your way to go to The River Market. I don't mind driving about 25 miles from Reedville to reward myself with a barbecue sandwich and fries after doing something that deserves a treat. read more

Stopped in during a quick family visit in topping. The staff is very friendly. The selection is gourmet, not cheap but I had the best crab salad and 911 chips. They baked goods looked wonderful. We were told that the fried chicken on Sunday is the best around. Definitely check this out when visiting the area. We will definitely return. read more

When I worked near by this was one of the few places I enjoyed ordering food from when it was lunch time. Their sandwiches are amazing, the Serious Cheeseburger is the best around. They also have a great selection of wine, and the bakery sweets are like heaven in every bite. If you're just traveling through, I highly recommend ordering from this place. Again, Jim has delivered a fantistic short ribs dinner. Takes 2 hands on the bone, one to hold while chewing, the other to catch what falls off. Tasty is too understated a description. Fresh prepared mashed potatoes and string beans round out the meal. Too filling to go for dessert. One meal sufficed for both of us easily. And they cater! read more

What a treasure the River Market is! I had about given up on finding good barbecue in Virginia, but decided to give this place a shot. I told the cashier I am very particular about my barbecue. I said, "It's got to be really good, otherwise I don't want any." She just looked at me and smiled. She knew. She took my order back and called to the cook, "He says he wants barbecue, but it's got to be good," and they laughed. They knew. Soon enough, they brought me and my fiance a couple of fabulous barbecue sandwiches. My fiance is from France and I wanted to be sure she got a taste of excellent barbecue, so I was needlessly hesitant. She LOVED it. The French fries were the best in memory. They had a rich, potato-y taste and were expertly cooked so as not to be full of oil. The staff is just as nice as can be, too. Excellent prices, wonderful staff and outstanding food. My husband and I love this eclectic place. The food is outstanding from all their great soups to the daily specials to their wonderful bakery selection. We've never had a bad meal. They also do wine tastings on Friday afternoons and many Saturdays. They have some wonderful wines to choose from at great prices. I highly recommend the River Market. read more

This is a wonderful, eclectic find in the Northern Neck! Jim is the absolute best. If he recommends one of their awesome wines, pay attention! Originally, I stopped by for a good steak, which Jim cut for me. It was not cheap (not outrageous either), but it was TOP NOTCH. The wine he recommended was EXCELLENT (and a very good price), and has become my go-to wine. That kept me coming back, and I have to say, David's fried chicken on Sunday is 'da bomb' and any side I've bought there is fantastic. While I am a 'local', I'm not local enough to just stop in for a sandwich or meal, but I know they must be great. Give it a try! It's a gem of the Neck! read more

I ordered the cocktail menu for a dinner party I had two nights ago. It was the best hostessing decision I've ever made! I had high school friends visiting from out-of-state, and I wanted to spend my time taking them to see the sights rather than cooking. So even though The River Market is nearly an hour from where I live, it was great to combine the drive to pick up the food with a visit to Historic Christ Church and the attractive towns nearby. When we got back to my house, all we had to do was set the table. The cocktail menu was fantastic! The beef tenderloin was unbelievably good, and the other dishes measured up to its high standard of deliciousness. I've never before felt so relaxed when giving a dinner party, or felt so satisfied afterwards with the food. read more

On Friday, August 14, 2020 my husband and I stopped at the River Market in White Stone, VA for a late lunch. Having been there years before (we live 2 hours away) we remembered the good food and went out of our way to support their business. Inside was an elderly man who was waiting on a young couple and he was assisted by a young cashier. While we waited for them to finish assisting the couple, we shopped. As soon as the order for the couple had been taken, we asked for a menu and were told the kitchen was closed and they were not cooking lunch. I persisted by questioning why the other couple was being served, but we were unable to order. He repeated that lunch was over. We left. This simple interlude caused this store to lose a lunch sale, a grocery sale, and a repeat patron. We had hoped to support a locally owned business, especially during these difficult times but if they lack the drive to provide any service at all, they really should not expect to succeed. read more

This place has amazing take out food! Dinners typically run $22-$25, but you are't getting some frozen stuff they heated up. I got the Halibut that came with rabe, onions cooked in wine, and mashed potatoes. I'm a big dude, but this was just right. It isn't the cheapest place to get dinner, but this is the best dammed take out you will ever have! They use quality meats and make real sides, they aren't cutting corners. My family and I frequent the tides in several times a year. When we do not have a vehicle available we are usually catching a bicycle to this market to pick up some goods. I know this place is a local favorite but from my standpoint it is the most ridiculously priced market I have ever seen. I picked up 10 Polish sausages and 10 buns to cook one night and a six pack of beer and it ran me $60. They charged $1.50 per bun. I know things cost more when you're on vacation but since my last experience I will never spend any money here. It really has a very limited supply when you end up walking aroundand look at all the things that they have. Like I said I will never spend another dime here due to my last experience. read more

Stopped in to get a rack of ribs to take back for dinner. A full rack of baby back ribs was 16.99 so I bought one and took it with a small container of sauce. The ribs were probably cooked before the 4th and kept refrigerated over the long weekend so they were dry but I an live with that in this case. The ribs themselves were small and way past done. The rub used is paprika heavy and there was no discernible smoke ring. The sauce was unusual in that it was not either tomato sweet or vinegar tart but rather just bland. I probably should have gone for one of their many sandwiches as that is what was going out the door. read more
