I opted for water to drink but they had a nice coffee bar selection and a refrigerator case full of canned sodas, canned wine, and canned Bloody Mary, as well as a few beers. Counter service was friendly. It is a bus your own table kind of place where you bring your plates back to the end of the counter and clear your dishes/leave them on the counter. Place where everyone seems to know each other and you're stared at if it's clear you're just visiting/don't belong. It's quite loud and chaotic inside, and you will smell like fried foods after you leave. Its in fact so chaotic they have to give you a buzzer for when your food is ready. After staying at nearby The Tides Inn, we thought we couldn't find good coffee in the area until we were recommended The Local. Stopping in on a Sunday morning, we wish we had found it sooner! They have locally made food and a full coffee menu. My chai latte was delicious and my wife said her decaf americano was the best she's ever had, including any spot in NYC. The local is the most charming little cafe. It reminds me of a place you'd see in a TV show where everyone knows your name. They have cozy little nooks and lots of outdoor seating. It's a perfect place to have a nice lunch and taking in the sweet little beauty of your surroundings. My family and I ordered a few sandwiches. Turkey and cheese for the kids and Roast beef for the adults. My sandwich was pressed with melted cheese- it was delicious!! I also opted to try an iced Dirty Chai which was fantastic. The staff was friendly and really went out of their way to make something delicious for my two picky little eaters. I was staying at the Tides Inn and came here for breakfast on a Saturday morning. A quick bike ride but we saw lots of people walking to the Local from the Inn. It is a cute little breakfast shop in a very small and quaint part of town. I am so happy we got there right around 9 am because it sure got busy!!!! Plenty of seating outside and some cute little tables inside. Close quarters so there is not a lot of privacy. In fact the people next to us found out her friend was finally pregnant after many years of trying. She was so happy and I was happy for them. That's how close you are. We ordered to breakfast sandwiches and sat down. I loved the metal glasses for water....the water is self serve. The breakfast sandwich was on an everything bagel with bacon and egg and cheese. It was very good. I wanted to take more pics but the place was jamming when we left and it was awkward. I would definitely go back. There have been quite a few changes lately, and I'm not liking them. The number of sandwiches has been reduced by half. No more soup of the day. No more 1/2 sandwich and 1/2 soup combo. No more delivery of your order to your table. And none of the familiar faces are there. I was a regular for 10 years. Not as much during COVID, or since Front Porch opened in Kilmarnock, but have still been coming pretty often. But the recent changes are not going to draw me back. read more

Staying at The Tides Inn we were looking for a more affordable breakfast option. On a Saturday in August the Local was fairly busy, but no more so than your average Starbucks on a Saturday. We ordered breakfast sandwiches and coffee. The house coffee was good. We tried both the dark and the Brazilian. Both good. My bacon, egg and cheese croissant was quite good. My wife had the egg-white, Turkey sausage, cheddar and avocado croissant which was also quite good. We finished with an orange-cranberry muffin which we both really enjoyed. All of this under $20 with tip ( while the Inn wants over $20 for an omelette). They lost a possible fourth star because our order got lost in the shuffle and took too long to get served. Sitting outside to enjoy the morning watching everyone's food come out I assumed mine would too. Go back inside to find my food sitting on the counter waiting for me, cold. Maybe I don't tip enough? Don't know. If it wasn't a small business it would be 2 stars but it's covid and they are trying. Id go for the coffee but perhaps not the food.
