oof! got the falafel sandwich and unfortunately it was one of the worst sandwiches I've ever had. couldn't even finish it! the falafel was dry and had an off flavor. dry and flaky pita wrap. the tahini tasted sour and that's all the flavor it had. the hummus was ok. could stand to have a bit more garlic and lemon juice. my brother got the italian beef and enjoyed it more, but said the au jus could have had more salt. service was good enough, limited interaction. pretty disappointed by the food and won't return! read more

The Rock is a great Lebanese/Mediterranean place. They have good prices with almost every meal under $10. The Greek chicken salad is really good and so are the gyros. The location is near campus, so parking will be limited. It would be best to walk. read more

Not really a 4 but way better than a 3. Was glad to see some locals not just students. Minimalist decor but roomy and effecient use of space. Remembering Zorbas in Urbana 30 years ago...you always remember "your first" and it might not have been all that good...just something new at the time! So The Rock is pretty good...fairly priced...and better than all the usual fast food places...more like fast casual. I would eat here again for sure. read more

The Rock is one of my staples in Normal - every derivative of chickpea, you can get it here :) Try the falafel - especially if you've never had falafel before! Really though, their food is great. And, this may seem like an odd comment, but I'm serious because I really like french fries - the Rock has the best french fries anywhere. Super crispy. Coated? Food was quite good - got the Rock Salad which had Gyro meat and chicken. But, they serve this great food on super low end styrofoam plates with plastic forks. Seems shabby and not what I was expecting. Also their staff seems like they are annoyed with customers. The decor needs a facelift as well. Pretty cool location in Uptown normal, though. read more

One of the most authentic Mediterranean restaurants in the Midwest! Definitely always get the fries because they are crisp and an excellent side for any of their dishes. Burgers, falafel, and pita sandwiches are delicious staples on the menu. For an extreme garlic lover the garlic chicken packs an extreme flavor punch. Would go back just for this dish. TAKE YOUR MONEY SOMEWHERE ELSE. I had the absolute worst "philly cheese steak" imaginable. They threw a couple slices of Kraft cheese on terrible meat and called it a sandwich. I paid $6 for a sandwich that made me maybe 1/5 full. Please go to Jimmy John's next store and buy an amazing delicious sub. Not doing that when I went I currently the biggest regret of my entire life. I'm begging you not to come here. I wouldn't lie to you. read more

The Rock is one of the best places in Uptown Normal to grab lunch or dinner! On top of a huge menu, they have a great location that is easy for students to walk to and meet up with friends. Great place for a small group lunch. I get the falafel sandwich or salad every time...I know, way to branch out of my comfort zone, ha ha. Good falafel is hard to find, and I know that I'd be kicking myself a few hours later if I got something else. Not that the other items on the menu, aren't tasty, because I know from friends that they are, but the falafel is always perfectly cooked and, while it may not be that spicy, it's tasty and not dry and overdone like in a number of places. The falafel also go well with the fries, which are always golden brown and crisp. The only downside is that the falafel is served with tahini sauce and I'd much prefer tzatziki, so it would be great if they would offer a choice of sauces, or offered extra sauces as sides on the menu. Last time I came and grabbed a falafel sandwich for an early dinner. It wasn't very busy, but I think moreso because of the time, this does really seem like more of a lunch spot. I'm a fairly frequent patron because I work near uptown and The Rock is usually decent enough for price and speed. It's never been my favorite, but like I said...decent. Unfortunately, my boyfriend (a local sous chef) and I were incredibly disappointed with our food there today. We ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and a gyro. Both were substandard. The buffalo sandwich was poorly assembled, the bun was ice cold, the lettuce & tomato were sparse, and it was all-around...unappetizing. The meat on my gyro was cold and limp like it hadn't been cooked, the pita was stale-ish, and the sauce was...different(?). I don't know what was up, but it was just overall a really, really bad meal. Also, this was the only meal we ate today, and ever since, well, let's just say we've been suffering from gastrointestinal distress. Definitely wish we'd opted for Jimmy John's instead. Holy falafel. Seriously, eat here if you want the best falafel in central Illinois. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but the falafel, gyros burger and hummus will blow your mind. Great place, I'm from Chicago which if you ask anyone has so much culture so I'm always trying new and great foods. Middle Eastern and Greek happens to be one of my favorites. I always judge a restaurant by eating my favorite dishes first, so I had the falafel. I've mostly eaten at very generous restaurants because my Middle Eastern friends know the spots and have the hooks up but for a small place in NORMAL, Illinois it was a great taste which brought alive some of my taste buds, they also have a different take on the dish which was enjoyed by me. My next dish was of course the Gyro, the Super Gyro to be correct, which was a good portion, good taste, what more could I ask for? Nice people, heard great things about their previous establishment, only place around here that serves this type of food. I hope they enjoy continued service, because they will for sure get it from me and my friends. Oh yeah and the place is nice, so bring the family, bring the friends and hangout. read more

Heading home from Chicago, I jumped on Yelp to find somewhere for BF and I to eat lunch. Yelp wins for us again! I'm vegetarian (with the occasional fish) and LOVE that they tell you right off what's vegetarian, saving me from 15 minutes of looking through every menu item for non meat items. BF loves his gyros, so he went with the Super Gyro. I decided this was going to be my once every 2 months fish, so I got the salmon salad. Was very good. Both of us left happy. read more

I give it 5 because of the Gyros they are the best in town hands down. Been coming to the Rock since they opened years ago in the old location off Main St. The new location has been added on since I was here last and it is really nice with more seating. Even though I have heard the Chicken Challenger is awesome I come here for Gyros the Super Gyro in particular as it comes with feta cheese and more of the nice crispy lamb. Someday I will branch out and try some other stuff on the menu as the guys that run the place are always asking how it tastes. They really care about their products here. If you have room for dessert I have to recommend the Baklava it is really good. read more

We walked in for lunch while we were taking an impromptu college tour of Illinois State. This place is located on North St, which is the hub of the trendy Uptown area of Normal, located adjacent to ISU's campus. The place has nice, clean indoor seating and also a sidewalk eating area. They specialize in Mediterranean food as well as American classics such as burgers, cheesesteak and such. We had the falafel and the Philly cheesesteak. The falafel is chopped up into small pieces, wrapped in a double layer of a soft lavosh-style wrap with sliced tomato, iceberg lettuce leaves, tahini, and dill pickle spears. I have to say that the sandwich as a whole lacked seasoning and there was not enough falafel in it but whoever thought to put dill pickle spears in it was a genius! The falafel itself, being chopped into small pieces, was virtually flavorless but offered some nice crunch. Overall the sandwich was just ok but with a few tweaks could be really good. The cheesesteak was super hot so it was obvious it was just made but tastewise it was also just ok. The fries are thickish rectangles coated in something to make them really crispy - tasty. Overall this is a charming place with clean decor, friendly service and decent food. read more
