We went for a little Galentine's dinner, and while the food was absolutely amazing (that oxtail mac and cheese is to die for ), the service was really disappointing. The restaurant was packed, which I get, but this has happened on multiple visits (July and September) the staff can be so rude and inattentive. During this visit, our waitress basically forgot about us. We never got water, had to track her down through the hostess, and watched her serve other tables while we waited. Eventually, she admitted, "omg I forgot about them," and they took 10% off our bill. A nice gesture, but it doesn't make up for feeling ignored. I really hate to rate this restaurant so low because it has so much potential inside, but potential doesn't fill stomachs nor pay bills. For starters parking is atrocious. There are two parking lots directly next to location which require you to scan shady QR codes to Zelle someone to park. So we ended up driving around looking for street parking. I made a same day reservation, with no issues online. I ended up getting a call from restaurant to ensure we were coming to reservation although I had just made it 5 minutes prior. Upon walking in we were the first patrons, so i was confused on what the call was for. The inside gives very TikTok grass wall chic. Service is extremely slow and answering questions about menus isn't their particular forte I guess. I had to waive waiter down for to to boxes, water, to order, and to ask for the check. Mind you we drove so far out of our way to come and support this establishment, tragic to say the least. We were immediately seated and given some sort skimp and overpriced menus. I had inquired on which would be best out of curry goat or oxtails and I was told goat because there's no bones, which she came back later to clarify she meant minimal bones. The restaurant has had some updates done. Gives a nice lounge feel. The bars & seating areas are the same places. I came in for the 4-6p happy hour & had the Jubba wings, side of oxtail Mac n Cheese (not HH), Strawberry Margarita, & Red Sangria. I arrived at 5p & it wasn't too busy since they opened at 4p. That soon changed. Thankfully, I put in my order pretty fast, & received the food promptly. As it became busier, I noticed there was a delay in food coming out. Especially if am entrée was ordered. The food itself was delicious. They didn't skimp on the amount of Oxtail & cheeses in my side order. The portion was also filling & I had leftovers (yeah!) It was hot, tender, & it had the cheese pull. The wings were tough, but the sauce was everything. So good, I didn't bother with the dipping sauce, that has a mayo consistency. I was so excited to try this place out since they are vegan friendly...My husband and I went for our anniversary and sadly we were disappointed. We waited quite some time for beverages and even longer for our entrees. My husband had an app as his meal and was supposed to come at the same time as my meal but that didn't happen. This place has lots of exposed brick, high ceilings, 2 bars on opposite ends of the restaurant, a VIP section and PLENTY of seating all over. The music is lively and the atmosphere is just full of energy. Service: Shacoia is our favorite server there! She's down-to-Earth, sweet, funny and just all-around amazing. Make sure you ask for her! Food: So at the old location I'd go STRAIGHT for the jerk wings because they were INCREDIBLE! The fish tacos were ok but the shells need some love, like they need to be grilled or warmed. The jerk chicken and rice were flavorful but the portions are bougy for the price. I got an opportunity to experience this restaurant while visiting the area for the lacrosse tournament. I wish I lived closer because I would definitely be back here more often. There is an abundance of parking next door it is also right near a train station so there is easy access. There was a variety of seating options. You could sit at the bar, there were quite a few hightops by the bar for groups. There were high tops for doubles. They were regular tables and then a comfy couch seating area. I appreciated that aspect of the layout. All of the food I got had a great flavor and beautiful presentation. I think that was the downtown area...anyways, it was for my friend's birthday brunch and it was a good time. It came with rice 2 plantains and cabbage or "mixed vegetables" it was not overpowering spicy. Chicken was pretty tender. I also sampled the jerk pork... SO SPICY. It blew my mind how the difference in the meat changed the spice level. I couldn't enjoy that but I really did enjoy the chicken. I really want to go back and try the red velvet cake. First Timer... The ambiance is amazing. Visiting in January of 2022, so it is VERY cold. We made reservations and they tried it... tried to sit us by the front door. Uhm NO. So seated in the middle dining area. We waited a good 15 minites for the waitress. I asked about the non-existent heat. She said it would be warmer soon. This is the first Jamaican restaurant I've been to that is an actual sit down with food presentation. The food is actually the best Jamaican food I've had in CT so far. Came to the Russell for a night time event and decided to return for brunch later in the weekend. My friend had left her jacket and the staff was really nice in looking for it and returning it. We felt well attended to, and the food came out fairly quickly. My friends who got the chicken and waffles really enjoyed them. I got the ox tails along with another friend, they were super flavorful and portion was good. The only thing I would say is that it needed more gravy. I asked for more on the side and they were happy to supply it however, it still seemed like I needed more but it's possible this is just a personal preference. First let me say, I've been a fan of the restaurant for years. I have eaten there many times, ordered out at the other location in West Hartford location and celebrated a few birthdays at the Hartford location. However I went to the downtown Hartford location twice in the past couple of weeks with a large group of ladies and something has changed in the QUALITY of the food and dishes. The chicken, fried and stewed was very bony with not much meat, my guest called it "chicken back" because it was so bony. The plantains were Hard!!! We could tap them with a fork, the rice was very dry and there were other issues with the food which is too much to text. Also one of the biggest concerns and an embarrassment for me, the one who suggested that we go here was the Bathroom!! The bathroom was dirty, floor was wet, mop was sitting at the door blocking the entrance somewhat. Manager was informed immediately by me due to the potential fall risk for your patrons. This all happened upon opening at 5pm on Saturday. My hope is that the owner will read this and make the necessary adjustments. Have to do better! Can't continue to do business this way. read more

Try this place out again since they recently remodeled. A place I used to frequent a lot about 14-15 years ago! I know it's hard to get good help these days came reservation 645 on a Saturday night. It was extremely slow. Our waitress didn't greet us asked us if we wanted drinks and wasn't very welcoming. Gave her the benefit of the doubt ordered appetizers. They came about 15 minutes later our salad had no dressing. The runner who brought it didn't know salads were supposed to have dressing or what dressing comes on the salad. It was the Russell salad we ordered. Five minutes later, he came back with the dressing and just sat down in front of my husband. The tomatoes in the salad literally disintegrated to the touch. They definitely are spoiled so we had to remove them. I proceeded to watch our server on a slow night, stand by the bar and talk to three other coworkers for about 15 minutes then she got a big party maybe 10 top. She stood over there taking the order for 20 minutes. Then she came back and took our order. I proceeded to wait another 40 minutes for our food at which point I saw her look at us many times and go to the kitchen and carry it out herself. My husband's oxtail was completely cold to the touch, including rice. My meal obviously was the one they were waiting for as my sandwich was hot, but the plantains on the plate were cold. I had to flag her down. She took his dish back and came back with it eventually later. A little while later we asked for hot sauce. My husband finish his whole meal. Ive been in the hospitality industry for 30 years now. What I experienced the other night is unfortunately what has become of many instances where money trumps over integrity. A reservation was made for the evening as we were a large group. I was excited to know that The Russell was black owned. I was eager to go and ready to support my people. Upon entering we were informed that there not only wasnt a reveration, but that it was never done ( the hostess....very caddy and uninterested....she showed this buy avoiding eye contact and walking from table to table instead of addressing the situation head on ) The manager was spoken to and arrangements were made over the phone days before ) we were seated but missing a chair. I asked Quasi (bartender/waiter/ I dont know) several times for a chair throughout the nite to the point my wife just told me to stop asking. Other cons - Quasi was the EXACT same as the hostess. Well over 30 minutes for drinks to arrive ( ALL JUICE AND ICE DO NOT DRINK HERE!!!) and was beyond unnattentive with us. At a few points I glanced over to where he was and he was standing at the end of the bar with a woman gawking and talking about us.....it was more than obvious After having to deal with the hostess telling us there were no reservations, about midway through the time we were there as I was talking to family..behind my younger sister I could see the host staring and talking about us to some women who she later seated with a large group. We were there 3 hours for a few appetizers, fake drinks and beyond rotten service. We had not even recieved certain food orders yet and Quasi came running over to our table and dropped take out containers and walked away?!?! My wife had to clear the table of dirty dishes and would leave them at the bar as we were ignored the entire night At one point one of my sisters asked Quasi for gravy "For what??....whats that???" ( the same Quasi that claimed at the beginning he prides himself with not forgetting anything but couldnt remember gravy for stewed chicken one of only main dishes we ordered At the end of this mess Quasi walks up and says "Okay its going to be 576.00 for everything including the bottle service" ( him walking from the bar with a bottle of wine in a plastic container of ice cost an extra 20.00 but couldnt produce an actual receipt. When I asked hom twice he says "okay I can do that for you. LOLOL!!! THEY ALSO ADD 18% GRATUITY + 20% ON TOP OF THAT!!! I was beyond angry. We've been going to The Russell for over a decade. As a staple of downtown Hartford, The Russell is like a piece of home that you can ALWAY rely on for comfort! They've implemented a Sunday brunch, and even better, an Express Lunch that's open on weekdays until 2pm. We were able to get in and grab some Ackee & Saltfish (it's been so long) and it definitely gave me the nostalgia of being back at home in Jamaica as children. We did have to send it back to be reheated, BUT the flavor, texture and were right on point and the second time around was perfection!!
