My wife and I stopped into Farrell's this afternoon on our way home and decided to have some appetizers before crawling in a day. We ordered the Barada appetizer which was arugula and cooked baby tomatoes covered in Barada with a delicious balsamic glaze. We also had which we never had before was the steak egg rolls. They were the best steak eggrolls we have ever had. They didn't drip grease They were very tender and reminded both of us of a steak sub. The flavor was right on. Recommend those all the time atmosphere was quiet because it was before happy our usual time of 4 o'clock, but the service was very friendly and they took care of us and highly recommend a place. read more

Just attended the post funeral reception for Tony LaMalfa. The buffet was amazing. Caesar salad, chicken cordon bleu, stuffed shells and roasted potatoes were all delicious. Had a very nice glass of what I assume is a house red. Place is clean, warm and cozy with plenty of seating for those who wished to sit. read more

Came in on Wednesday for a quick lunch on the deck and realized it's the best day to go as they offer BOGO 50% off the menu items. Was a toss up to try the fish or shrimp tacos as it comes w saffron rice. With the recommendation from the waitress we went w the shrimp tacos. They are so filling and come with 5 shrimps in each tacos shell. They have to say you won't be disappointed as they were so good I went back the following week and ordered the same dish. The service on the covered deck was alittle slow since it was during lunch but still offered us good service. The restaurant is very clean and great place to dine. They have been around a long time and have a great reputation with great food. read more

Cute little local place. We usually sit in the bar - Jen is the best bartender in the area. Her drinks are great (and strong), and she does fun things around the holidays like 31 days of Christmas or Halloween drinks. Their food can be iffy, it's a lot of pub food but the current chef does mix it up a bit. Their French onion soup is fantastic. We often go just for that. Some of the apps and entrees are just unexciting bar food. On a recent trip, I enjoyed the special of the night which was a linguine with scallops and a sherry cream sauce. It was great and exactly what I needed that night. Don't be afraid to try the specials. I enjoy their seasonal salads as well. And don't forget to finish with a slice of their famous carrot cake! read more

I really hate leaving bad reviews, but this is one of the most disappointing meals I've had in a while. For food, I ordered the happy hour chicken dumplings, and chicken sliders. The sliders were borderline inedible. The chicken had a very off flavor, it tasted like burnt old chicken thighs on stale bread. I honestly couldn't even finish one and I am not picky normally with food. The dumplings were a bit better, but the only veg I saw was corn, and the filling had a sweet taste to it, almost like cinnamon, which was odd. Both of these dishes were on the happy hour menu for $7 each. My mom ordered the chicken quesadilla and said she bit into a bone at one point which put her off to the whole dish. I also tried one of the Philly egg rolls and those were pretty good. Definitely the best thing I tried. The service was good at first, but once it got busier our server didn't come to check on us. For a second drink, we had to go up to the bar. The other food looked good, but I can't speak on that since I didn't try it. Unfortunately I will not be returning here. read more

I base my rating mainly on the food. My husband and I were there for lunch last week. There's an option of sitting on a lovely shaded deck in the back, away from the traffic noise - but we sat indoors because it was so hot. The seating was comfortable indoors as well. Our server was friendly and attentive. The best thing we ordered was a crispy Sriracha cauliflower app special. It was only very slightly hot (spicy hot) and very tasty. We shared a Reuben sandwich and a spinach salad. The sandwich was OK, but far from the best I've had (I order them often at various restaurants). The spinach in the salad was fresh, but the tomatoes were only a pasty pale pink, there were way too many black olives, and the biggest disappointment was the croutons. I rarely buy croutons to have at home because i know I get tempted to eat the whole bagful as a snack! These croutons were so salty as to be unpleasant. I ate them anyway though. Sad. read more

Over the years we've driven Marlborough St in Portland and noted the packed parking lot at Farrell's. A couple of weeks ago my wife & I finally stopped in for dinner and we're favorably impressed. Last evening we returned with another couple. Our party ordered Prime Rib, Steak Tips Pizziola, Pub Steak, Fish & Chips, preceded by their Clam Chowder. The Chowder was thinner than last time (a good thing) but just as flavorful and clam intense. The entrees were generous, well executed, and very well received! The mixed drinks were generous. We were served on both occasions by Christine, a young college student with an excellent command of hospitality and efficient service. Dinner for four with drinks and generous gratuity came to less than $200. We now have a full understanding of the chronically congested parking lot. We'll definitely be back. My husband and I have been coming here for awhile now. We recently moved to CT and this restaurant is close to where we live so it's been a good go to place. We've had great service and the food is also great as well. Many options to choose from. Our favorite is the Philly cheesesteak rolls. They also have amazing seasonal drinks to choose from as well as many other drinks that you find at a bar. Every time we go in there they recognize us and make us feel at home. One waitress recommended her special margarita and I would say it's one of the best we both have ever had, I would say even better than Sayulita's read more

Farrell's is a mainstay in our town of Portland. I used to come to dinner and happy hours just after highschool. The friendly service comes to mind first. Sarah was our server and was attentive and cheery. Her friendliness and attention to detail is very pleasant to receive. Tonite mom and I split a plate of fish n chips! We had a hankerin'. So 5 years ago for Valentine's Day, my future husband and I checked Yelp for a recommendation on where we should go for dinner. Farrell's was the first recommendation to pop up and off we went. Fast forward to last night, when we remembered how good the food was that cold, snowy Valentine's night, and wanted some pulled pork Mac and cheese again. Upon our arrival, Jay stuck with the plan and ordered the delicious Mac and cheese again, but I went a little rogue. I ordered the pulled pork "Shepherds Pork Pie" and I don't think I even want traditional shepherds pie after last night. Omg, heaven in each bite taken. A nice sized burger, steamed with cheese and a lot of fresh garnishes. Now I know that when the longing for a steamed cheeseburger overcomes me, I can go to Farrell's. Since 1/2 stars aren't possible in a Yelp Review , I'm being generous in giving this 4 stars; it's definitely more of a 3.5. We stopped at Farrell's for lunch on a March Sunday after walking the new rail trail in Portland off Rt 66. Some in our group had been to Farrell's in the past and agreed it was a good choice for lunch. Dependable decent good but nothing to WOW. Overall I'd agree with that assessment with the one exception: the Carrot Cake Martini, which was absolutely fabulous. The ingredients are " secret" but you can bet I'm going to try to copy this!! Our party opted for cups of clam chowder and French Onion soup to start. The clam chowder was pretty good but honestly way too thick! It was seasoned well with a nice balance of potato to clam but really needed some added broth or milk to thin it. The French Onion soup had a nice melted cheese topping and looked good. We chose sandwiches or salad as entrees. The accompanying fries were crisp, hot and tasty . I had the prime rib sliders which were good but not great. Thinly sliced prime rib with melted cheese on 3 small round brioche buns was an ample serving. Another member of our party had the cheesesteak wrap and he thought it was better than average. The steak French dip on ciabatta looked good and got a better than average rating as well. Finally the Caesar salad looked about what you'd expect but all ingredients looked fresh and crisp but at $9.99 it was overpriced. Our waitress was very good and attentive. Decor is a little blah and some natural light and windows would be a nice touch but overall the food was good, fresh and where appropriate served hot. This place is the only noticeable restaurant in Portland CT. There are many Irish-Americans living around this area. When my husband & I went to this place for St Patrick's 08, it was soo fun! I've eaten at Farrell's 3 to 4 times and had only one decent meal. Yesterday I was there for lunch. I brought my own water with me as I don't drink water which may contain things I don't want in my body (e.g. fluoride, chlorine, etc.). The waitress immediately informed me I couldn't bring in my own water to which I replied I wasn't going to drink the restaurant's water; she let the matter drop. I ordered clam strips w/fries for $19.00. It turned out to be clam SHREDS which tasted only of the flour batter which encased them. Atmosphere=2/10, service=4/10, price=3/10, food quality/presentation=2/10. My advice is to go into Middletown where there are some decent places to eat. Skip Farrell's. read more

We passed this restaurant on the way to see my brother-in-law and my wife, who notes places she passes picked this as a place we should consider for our weekly date night. We did the drive from near Hartford. We arrived and noted that their sign out front is advertising for line cooks, bar back and wait staff. That should have been a warning. Their menu proudly proclaims that they have "the best prime rib in the area." So, we started off with the bruchetta, I ordered prime rib, the 12-ounce cut and my wife ordered the cobb salad with shrimp. My wife asked if the shrimp was grilled and our server answered in the affirmative. About our server: She was wonderful, responding positively to everything. Took a drink and appetizer order, checked back, was very friendly. No problems there. The front-of-the-house has issues. We walked into what I thought was their front door and walked well into their dining room before we got to a station where they have menus and will seat you. I think this restaurant is so casual that they just leave it to the locals to pick their favorite table. We were seated at a booth that had not been cleared -- there were several un-cleared tables. Add busboy to their list of needed personnel My wife ordered the strawberry-basil margarita. I tried it and found it overly sweet. Maybe this is a good idea, but poorly executed. This is a new drink on their menu. I had a beer. The bruchetta is slabs of Italian bread with chopped tomatoes and garlic with a little vinaigrette drizzle over some lettuce. The bread is not toasted which annoyed my wife. I noted that the tomato and garlic was extremely fresh. Then main dished arrived. I was looking forward to the "best prime rib in the area." I think the area has issues. The prime rib was bland and a bit tough. My wife's Cobb salad had shrimp that had been sautéed and not grilled. The shrimp was okay, the salad was not crisp. Rather, it was sodden tasteless leaves with dressing and shrimp around the sides. The decor is aged, it is dark inside. There are Christmas-type lights with garland that suggest that either they realize it's dark and dingy in the dining room and this is all they can do to improve things or that May is just a few short months before Christmas! They have a television set airing sports in the dining room. The busboy found that more interesting than the table he was clearing as he gave more attention to that than his work. TV belongs in the bar. This is a very casual place catering only to locals. Maybe you will have a better experience, but we will give it a skip. Well we finally tried this place after all these years passing it on Route 66. Delightfully surprised!! Lots of selection, food is great and not too salty. This place is always busy and now I know why. I started off with their steamed dumplings. They seemed fresh and the sweet chili sauce was very nice. I had the Italian Cod which comes with artichokes , kalamata olives, Zucchini, over brown rice & quinoa. This dish wasn't salty, as the olives added enough of it with each bite. The fish was cooked perfectly. My husband had the 16 oz prime rib which was nice and again, not too salty. Their carrot cake was a bit heavy but tasted very nice. There are a number of items we want to try so we will be back!!! read more

One of those typical ayerish bahs with nice atmosphere and decor. The guiness is fresh off the tap that has that almost hint of apple crisp flavor. The food is plentiful and delicious. I ordered the grilled smoke burger which has really good BBQ sauce. The fries are crispy. The bread is fresh from the oven. Really, really good. Good place for a drink, great place to eat. read more

So my husband and I have been here several times, as we live here. Today was one of the worst experiences we have had. My hubby ordered A Buffalo Chix wrap which was good. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich. TALK ABOUT DRY!!! It was terrible. The worst part was I asked for more sauce and the wait staff yes'ed me and then forgot the sauce. NOT COOL. Stopped here after a long drive with my dog. The only reason there's 2 stars instead of one is because they allowed her to sit outdoors. The food is horrendous, absolutely no flavor whatsoever. I had the salmon. Overcooked, not seasoned, the mango salsa tasted like it had been sitting out too long. The first waitress we had been greeted by was the most rude and unpleasant human I've ever had the displeasure of speaking with. She gave us attitude right off the bat about the fact that we went inside to ask about being served. She came out and rudely stated "Did you not read the sign that says you need to get someone to serve you?", which we obviously did, had we not, no one would've come out? Jesus. She then proceeded to tell us about how we needed to be "courteous" about the party coming in with a child and move our seats due to our dog. We moved, we were kind. Luckily, we had a nicer young woman come after to take our order. She deserved 5 stars alone, but my friend and I were appalled from the beginning. Cherry on the top: we asked the first woman for a refill on water and she grabbed the cup, filled it and slammed it on the table. As if we were a nuisance. I cannot believe the service from her. Shouldn't water be filled consistently? Maybe I'm spoiled with service standards from manhattan? The food was very tasty and the place was very clean. It was our first time eating inside during the pandemic and we were well spaced apart. The wait staff was very attentive and pleasant with all the proper PPE. We could hear the bartender in the other room arguing with someone and later when I asked to try a particular beer before I ordered it the bartender was complaining again. The food was full of flavor. We had the philly egg rolls - two thumbs up! I had the chicken tenders. They were very tiny pieces of chicken, not really tenders at all, but still flavor was good. We also ordered the NOLO shrimp. It really needs a new name since it had three little shrimp in the entire dish. The shrimp still had the shell on the tail which is hard to deal with when it's in a plate of sauce and noodles. The flavor was there but needs some work. Farrell's is another one of those places where everyone in town goes a dozen or so times when the family decides to have a night eating out. It's not particularly classy but they serve some classic Irish fare. This is not the kind of Irish place where you are likely to be served by anyone with an accent- I mean you're in Portland, CT for goodness sake! But you will get some service from nice Irish American girls who are in their first restaurant job or an old timer that's been there for 20 years. It's a family/townie spot. I recently used Farrell's to cater my sister's wedding shower and Art was great to work with. I ordered all cold foods, he arrived early with his wife and was almost done setting up when I got there. The food was excellent (wraps, salads, etc.) and he also set up the linens and provided silverware and china. The price was reasonable and I got many compliments on the food. His wife came back at the end of the event and helped clean up. I would def recommend Farrell's to anyone and will use them again to cater. read more
