I have been coming to this clinic for a couple of years to avail myself of the sexual health clinic. The place was never a paragon for efficiency or excelled in any way, but I recognized its worth as a walk-in clinic in an underserved area and I put up with the odd nuisance. My visit a few months ago however was a disaster that forever swore me off this place and I would advise anyone but those folks who have no other options to chance it. Everything on my visit went to ***, starting with a young provider who admitted he was in training for just a couple of months (and still was not supervised or accompanied by his trainer) who had to pop out every few minutes to ask "if we can do that" and who almost swabbed my throat with the swab already used for another test (ewww). Things really went downhill when I went to the lab to get my blood tests; when I got there, I noticed two people already checked in ahead of me who were sitting and waiting. I signed myself in and waited for about 25 minutes myself - after already spending an hour and a half in this place even though I had an appointment I had arrived promptly for. After those 25 minutes had elapsed and the door to the lab remained closed with no one calling patients, I went to a gentleman who appeared to be some sort of concierge and asked him to check with the lab if they were aware that there were patients waiting there for over half an hour (including the people who were already there waiting before me). He obliged and did so, and when he emerged from the lab he said someone was coming. And sure enough, SHE DID. A person emerged from the lab and without drawing in a breath tore into the poor youth who had been waiting there the longest, confronting him why he had the temerity to complain and lie that he was waiting there for half an hour. I drew her attention away from the underserving victim and said it was me. She then fixated me with her gaze and yelled at me that I had not been waiting for half an hour since I had signed at XX:XX. I said yes, at this point it had been about 25 minutes, but people had been waiting before I got there, which made it half an hour FOR THEM. She then yelled me again to "not be telling no lies as that makes it look like they're not doing their jobs." At this point I walked away and asked the concierge for assistance in filing a complaint. He was very obliging and tried to help, but after half an hour spending going from floor to floor and room to room he said no one was availalbe to take my complaint and promised he would have the responsible person call me. At that point, I left because I was not about to have someone who was verbally abusive or her colleagues stick a needle in my arm. To summarize the next couple of weeks, it took a while to get a call from the liason in charge of complaints, who mouthed a lot of platitudes but had little to show for it. In the end, I did get a call from the lab director, but other than "reassuring" me and apologizing to me he could highlight no definitive actions taken against the person he employed or any meaningful corrective action. On top of that, he could not explain the final nail in the coffin - why two out of the four swab tests had not come back or resulted. In summary, I will NOT trust my health to a clinic where a) a swab already used for one test can be used to swab you again, b) unsupervised personnel in training is not accompanied by a - imagine that - a supervisor, c) the lab staff makes people wait inordinately long for no reason at all and then d) yells at and abuses the patients who dare raise questions, only to e) have the liason responsible for complaints not be found for days until he is and then he is ineffective, topping it all with f) the lab director neither being able to explain how 2 out of 4 swab test results never came back and then failed to outline any concrete steps to discipline an abusive employee or to implement a concrete plan to root out these serious and unsafe practices. read more

When I was infected with Covid-19 and during my hospitalizations last January 2021, even if I was admitted to a different hospital and was cared for by another team of doctors, DR. SHANKARAN was there all the time to answer my call. DR SHANKARAN was the one who facilitates my papers for my leave of absence from work when other doctors are hard to reach, hard to talk, and impossible or never answer my calls. DR. SHANKARAN answers my calls and voice messages right on time. One more beautiful thing about DR. SHANKARAN, when she calls back, and I could not answer her call, she will never stop calling all over again until she talks to me. Isn't that something how caring she is? She would saw to it that her patients are always on the right track. Recently, I have a few issues that I thought are symptoms or side effects from Coronavirus. DR SHANKARAN is the only doctor that I could talk to so easily about my worries. She would always find a way to make me feel or her patients better and develop a solution. The CORE center is God-send for the uninsured and under-insured among us. A few things ot keep in mind though. This isn't a private doctor's office. The waits are long so bring a book, ipod or some other way to entertain yourself. Some of the clerks can be a little abrupt, but understand they are well meaning and just want to get through each person quickly and thoroughly. Let smile be your umbrella. This is a public clinic so you're going to see a lot of people on some of the worst days of their lives. If you can't handle being around human suffering and despair for a couple hours, you're going to be seriously bummed out by the time your visit is over. Ask questions. Navigating the the river of paperwork can be rather daunting. There are people there to help you with it, but they can't answer your questions or address your concerns if you don't speak up. If you're having a fantastically crappy day, don't be afraid to ask for a social worker. They are there even if you just need someone to sit with you while you completely lose your shit and bawl your head off. Practice gratitude. I do not mean merely thanking people, but actually feeling it inside you. You would be surprised how much better you feel as you catalog all the things you should be grateful for instead of the suffering and injustices you feel you endure. read more

I was able to spend a day at the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center for my community health nursing class and I am absolutely floored by the professionalism, friendliness and candor of the entire staff here. What many people don't seem to know is that the center is NOT just for HIV/AIDS patients. They provide quick and comprehensive screenings for all sexually transmitted diseases as well -- chlamydia, gonorrhea, BV, hepatitis, you name it. You just walk right in, no appointments necessary. If you need to be treated for something, they give you the medications you need on the spot. If you don't have insurance, they'll work out something really affordable. I can't adequately emphasize how personable the staff is here -- you will be treated with dignity and respect, and come out with some free condoms, too. :) read more

It's Very difficult for me to go see my doctor. I have to practically be dying to go. I Literally have to psych myself up to go which is the reason I feel I must make this complaint. I came in to see my PCP and as I was waiting a therapist walked up & asked me a question the same time a Nurses assistant named "Carla" came out and called my name to take my vitals. As quick as I could answer the therapist & turn around to go in with " Carla" she walked away letting the door close & lock behind her. I knocked & knocked but she never came back to open the door for me until later. I'm sure she heard me because I'm Very Heavy handed. She made me feel Very Uncomfortable, Sad & Unwelcome. As I stated earlier It's Really difficult for me to get up the courage to go see my PCP. I'm still unable to let this poor treatment of me go in my mind so I felt I need to bring this to the Core Center's attention. read more

As a layperson, I would not be in this area for any reason. The people who typically come here are those who do not have insurance, as I was told. So many times, it is the unemployed, lower-income. The interesting part is that right out of the area and Stroger, the people seem to MAGICALLY change into students. I would be more wary in this area, but I listen to my Ipod after getting off the train and walking. I have not felt threatened, but I would not necessarily sleep with one eye open.... More like both. Environment: It is a clinic, it is not supposed to be fabulous. But the first thing that comes to my mind is cleanliness. You have no idea where these people are coming from, if they know proper sanitation or not. I always keep a towel when I open doors or touch things. I am aware as to where all the sanitizers are in the clinic. I cannot afford to be sick! Location: Whilst it is in the medical district. It is on the edge, but conveniently by the station. An easy 5-minute walk on the blue line. Love it! I am sure the people who go here enjoy the close proximity as well, to the station. However, it still in the Medical District and it can be kind of creepy, not Stroger-out-patient-status creepy, but still creepy. Although I say this, I still wear my Ipod listening to Japanese music. :D People: You would not certainly come here to pick people up. You will see those people with purses like LV, Guchi, True Religion, but I am used to that. Other times, you see people that makes you go O_O! But of course I never wear that face. Services: I don't know all of the services that are provided, but for our section there is a registered dietitian, nurses, case managers to assist people, doctors.
