I went there with a Groupon voucher. The description mentioned that the service would be tailored by senior students under expert supervision at TSPA Howell. However, that wasn't the case when I arrived. The teacher stopped by briefly, spending between 2 to 5 minutes showing the student what to do and left. She seemed quite rude to the student, creating a tense atmosphere. I was the only customer in that large room. I told them I needed to leave in 2 hours for dental surgery, pointing to my swollen face and explaining that I was in pain. The girl working on my hair was inexperienced--it was her first time doing this type of work. She was very nervous and almost shaking--poor girl. Meanwhile, three other students were sitting around, bored and doing nothing. I assume this school isn't free. What a scam! There was no "expert supervision," and as a result, my scalp was burning, and my hair looked awful and burned. It took over an hour to put partial color on my hair, and then I was told to wait 30 minutes before washing it out. After waiting, Ive asked the student to wash my hair. The teacher finally stooped by and noticed the mess on my head and instructing me to wait at least 15 more minutes. Well, I couldn't wait as I had to leave for my surgery, and my scalp was burning from sitting with chemicals for 1 hour and 40 minutes. She refused to let the student wash my hair mentioning that I had signed some paperwork and would leave when she said so. At this point, I went to the washer to wash my hair myself. The teacher was yelling, instructing me to leave immediately if I wouldn't allow them to complete the work and wait, and even shut off the water over my head. "I'll see you in court," I told them as I headed to the first bathroom to rinse the nasty chemicals from my hair with water before my surgery. At this point, three people were yelling and pushing me, accusing me of things I hadn't done. I was crying, shouting that I was in pain, just needed my hair being washed and leave. Unfortunately, no one listened or cared. Worse still, they called the police, accusing me of hitting someone. It was surreal--a nightmare. On my way to my car, they were excitedly taking my car plate numbers while talking to the police. I couldn't wait for the police as I had to leave for my surgery. After the surgery, still in pain , I contacted the police in person, planning to file a formal complaint. read more

Ok, went for a follow up senior cut. Completely different experience than the first. This cutter was completely new to cutting hair and the 'senior' cutter nearby seemed annoyed being asked for help. Spent a lot of time on the sides, little on the top, almost looked like a military cut. When I asked the 'junior' cutter to please trim my eyebrows, they stated they never did that before and again asked for help. Way too inconsistent for me. read more

I've been to the school 3 times getting my hair done. Alyssa was very professional and friendly. Telling me what she was doing every step of the way. Please teach your students how to do curly hair. I went to get my hair dyed and the two people that did my color did a great job, but when I asked the person who was drying my hair to dry it to my natural curly texture it was obvious she had never been taught how to do curly hair. She pulled out a round brush after I had asked for my hair to be dried curly and I had to ask her to get a diffuser and curl cream. After my hair was mostly dried, she spent over half an hour going through my hair and twirling each piece around a brush. My hair was a brushed out frizzy mess by the end. Please put curly hair into your curriculum, I should not have to fix my hair when I get home. read more

I know this is a learning school... my one daughter Gianna went to one girl who did an amazing job I would give that girl 5 stars !!!! ....but my poor other daughter Giuliana went to another girl who literally butchered her hair. I told her a couple inches ... and even showed her. She must of kept messing up and had to go shorter and shorter. They need to really have someone by them if they are learning. This girl didn't know what she was doing at all. There should be a teacher standing there to watch a girl like this. This is not ok. My poor daughter hates her hair and doesn't even want to go out. The worst facial I've ever received. The girl was totally unprepared with what she would need for the facial. As I lay on the table waiting for her to gather her supplies, I asked for a pillow. What she gave me was an inch thick, so I asked her for a towel to put under my neck, she brings a washcloth. when she finally started, she was very fast and not relaxing with her massaging the cleansers or what ever she was putting on my face. Her steamer didn't work, took a good 5 minutes for her to come back with another one, then proceeded to put on the mask, then put the steam right close to my face. everything was not correct and done very unprofessional. I told her I had one blackhead taken care of. She didn't even address that, not magnifying light, nothing! I could go on but when I left I told her I was not pleased so her supervisor came out, some bimbo with a big mouth who felt it was better to sarcastically talk over me than to listen to possible constructive criticism. I couldn't deal with her stupidity, so I left. I understand these are students but I specifically asked the student how long she was doing this and she said 3 months, hopefully she won't graduate because she needs more training. read more

Got a cut and keratin treatment with Jenna. I am thrilled with how my hair looks. What really stood out is how thorough and meticulous she is. She's pleasant to talk to, but she is also very focused and careful when it came to my hair. Wasted over $200 for brassy streaky and completely uneven "balayage." Save your money and go to a regular salon. This picture is after 2 processes. I had old black box dye and have previously had balayage. My hair has never looked like this even after processing once and breaking through the black dye. Very disappointed and the manager throws their hands and up and says it's a school. If they cannot do verifiable balayage then it shouldn't be available as a service to the public. Their only solution was to have me come back and try to fix it, which I made clear in the beginning of the phone call I would not return and let anyone do anything further to my hair. read more

My daughter and I went here with a Groupon and regretted it. This is a school and I knew that going in. I have gone to schools in the past without any problems. I had a facial and the gal did essentially nothing but nlow the steam in my face and wash it. My daughter 's appointment was for highlights and cut and the instructor was there, but the guy took 8 hours to fry her hair and butcher it! When my daughter burst into tears when we were leaving and told them she hated it, they told her to use purple shampoo and condition it and call back if she wanted them to fix it! All this school does is teaches them how to pass the test, not how to do anything with hair or facials. Very sad and quite a learning experience for us! read more

Save your time and your money. DON'T GO HERE. I came here for basic highlights and when I met with the "professional" I was extremely specific about what I wanted. I showed pictures and described the exact color, style, and look that I was going for. Instead of getting blond highlights, they gave me caramel orange streaks. I called up right away and scheduled another appointment. When I came in they said that they were only able to fix the color blotching/unevenness, not the color. Now I paid $120 plus tip and got NOTHING that I wanted. My hair is exactly the same way that it was when I came in. Make an appointment with real professionals and skip this salon. read more

I am about to graduate from this school on Friday, and from the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful for this school and everyone there. I previously went to a votech school in high school for cosmetology in NY, I never got my license because I knew I'd never pass the state boards because I never actually learned anything there. It had been so long since I did that so my hours didn't count anymore. I moved to NJ and found this school, and decided to give cosmetology another try. Very skeptical because I was afraid i wouldn't learn anything again. But that was so far from the truth. Not only did they help teach me what I needed to know in order to pass the state boards (which I passed the written exam on the first try) but I learned how to work with clients and the right communication skills that are needed to be successful in my career as a cosmetologist. I had such a great experience with Anisa at TSPA! She was very professional and did an amazing job on my hair. I've already got many compliments on it! I had a blonde balayage done and she trimmed up my layers, and I like my hair more than I did when I got it "professionally" done a few months ago. Anisa really listens to what you want and takes her time to make sure she's giving you the best cut and color possible. I recently went to this school to get my hair colored and the service from the student was fabulous. Although my hair came out great I was highly uncomfortable and witnessed their "educator" ridicule another student openly in front of another woman next to me getting her hair done as well. I think the hairstylists teacher was highly unprofessional and as a past educator at an middle school, she seemed to be lacking in the areas of respect and how to properly teach her students and speak to them. She was outwardly negative and I noticed her making comments under her breath as well after loudly ridiculing one of her poor students. Unfortunately from feeling uncomfortable I won't be going back and made it known to multiple people to not go to this place to get any services but I do wish the best of luck to all of the lovely students I met there. read more

Best experience! I am a frequent customer usually getting a color, cut and blowout, have to say they are awesome!! Some of the students might take a little longer, but they are senior students who are supervised. They use Redken products. The pricing is also amazing considering what I use to pay elsewhere. This is a gem in Howell, a must try!! Keep in mind they are student and learning for their license, but they are better than some of the other places that I have gone to! read more

This school is doing something really great for the students pursuing cosmetology as their careers! One of my friend recently graduated from the school can never stop raving about the methodologies, teachers, as well as the owners!! I have even heard a lot of praise about the fun educational games organized time to time!! While she is waiting on her license to work, she keeps giving me a lot of interesting insight into certain aspects of skincare.
