This place takes advantage of their community. The prices are really high for what they offer. I saw a 20gal fish tank being sold for the same price as if you were to buy brand new at Petco (which ships to you too). You also can't tell if the aquarium is damaged until you fill it up. By then, you're screwed. A busted old canvas cost $40 when you could buy one at Target for less. I'm not trying to punch them by saying corporations sell for cheaper, but if you're a thrift store or you're supposedly non-profit and want to help your community, I think the prices should be relative towards that. I came here the first time last summer to donate an entire SUV worth of stuff. I felt unappreciated. No one guided me on what to do here. I had to ask workers and they just told me to leave my stuff in the back room. While I unloaded my cart full of new with tags branded clothing and really nice furniture and home decor, one of the workers was already digging my stuff calling dibs on whatever she wanted. Overall, it's a nice place with a decent selection but they really have to lower their prices. A lot of the stuff they have are 20+ years old and not in a good way, but they sell as-if it's new and retail. I was hoping some families could benefit from the clothes and home goods I donated, but sadly, I think most of the workers will pick out the nice stuff. I'm not against the employees having nice things, it just doesn't seem fair for the shoppers. I continue to donate only because I don't want to toss this stuff in the landfill when they're perfectly fine but I'm a bit upset they're profiting so much off my stuff. The store is an absolute mess, and everything is extremely poor quality and way overpriced. There is so much stained clothes, cheap brand names, and just plain garbage. It seems like most of the stuff should have just been put in the garbage, rather than on the shelf. It's a shame that these free donations are being priced at the retail price or higher. I come here whenever i want something and want to thrift it. Since many items can be thrifted i try to always look for the item before having to make the decision to order a brand new item. This place has basically everything if you are willing to take the time to look. The staff here is willing to help you if you ask them which they did. The prices here vary but are almost all worth it. Its a shame you can't negotiate the prices but its worth it. read more

Twice I called for information on how to donate goods and to ask what the Salvation Army would take. And twice I got the same man on the phone who was extremely rude to me! He interrupted me several times as I was trying to ask questions and then abruptly hung up on me at one point. After speaking with this man, I have little desire to donate here. Books are well presented and orderly but ***way*** to expensive. Paperbacks for $1.99? Hardbacks for $2.99? Individual comics for .99? Prices are double what they should be. I came here for the first time in a long time to drop stuff off because I didn't have time to donate elsewhere. I took a look around and the prices remain frustratingly high for secondhand vintage and non-vintage items. A food processor from the 1980s or prior -- WITH MISSING PARTS -- for $29.99. A chair from the 1990s or prior for $39.99. I could get a new mini food processor from TJ Maxx, or a set of 4 newer chairs on Craigslist for those prices. The store was almost empty and packed to the gills with stuff on a Friday morning. I suspect they are moving less inventory at these prices -- I know that I for one have stopped shopping here. I understand that this store now wants to get top dollar for all of its items. But the average customer is a working class person just looking to get more value on every day items and this store isn't offering that anymore. Sometimes you really have to know what you are looking for. For a thrift store that gets stuff for free they are REALLY expensive. Most items should be at most $20, & almost all big items start around there. I've seen them deny homeless people clothing and help and coats. Like you get this junk for free. Why are they being so ungrateful. The clothing, be sure to look over it everywhere inside & out. There's been many times that id bring it home and find stations, holes, broken zippers. Sometimes they don't even punch the tag correctly, so the tag will leave a hole when taken out. This place is so packed and dirty feeling. read more

Great finds and reasonable prices! The only bad thing is that there two dressing rooms in the whole place so don't be surprised if you find yourself waiting awhile to try on clothes. Besides that, would def go back. read more

I brought stuff in tonight to make a donation and was completely surprised at how wonderful this location is!! It was bright and busy -- everything was displayed so nicely!! I have to say, I hate giving donations to places that treat your items like yesterday's garbage -- especially when you're donating great items. I felt really good about bringing my items to this location and everyone was so nice. It's obviously changed hands because I don't remember this store ever being this nice. They overprice most items. That downstairs music is so annoying and it usually smells like funky microwaved popcorn. Maybe play some music your customers will like? I've also witnessed them making back door sales (which is when you sell an item on a sort of private reserve, rather then selling to the public). read more

Ok I don't usually do this but they forced my hand. Quick version, the manager is the worst, she changes prices on the spot, anything nice is labeled like antique store prices now, an all-and-all terrible shopping experience. If you are thinking about trying this place out, try somewhere else. Now the detailed version... My beef is with this location (Sheepshead bay) specifically. While a good sized place, it is always a mess and covered in dust. I've never once been offered help when I bring in donations. The place is priced like an antique store. Wedding dresses can be $500, the nicer shoes can be $40 and up, I saw some lamps there with $200 price tags. I am POSITIVE that most of the good stuff people donate never makes it back to the stores (pinched by warehouse staff?) which is a way bigger problem with the Salvation army business practices in general. The staff range from somewhat friendly to downright rude, but my biggest problem is with the manager. She is one of the most reprehensible people I know. The most heinous offense she is guilty of is the act of repricing. Here is how it goes. If you, by chance, find something nice at a reasonable price, the manager will come to the register, and she will claim that the price is incorrect and change it on the spot to whatever she wants, all while saying things like "we don't have to sell it," or sometimes "it's been tampered with, and should be more $$$" That sort of thing I just can not forgive. She simply has no shame, treating all customers equally badly, with that suspicious look on her face. THIS IS A DONATION BASED USED ITEM STORE. It is my impression from other customers and even her staff that no one else likes her either. The only reason I can see why she has not been fired is that her up-pricing probably just makes the store too much money or maybe she is of relation to the boss. Things have gotten so bad, that I have a smooth buying experience maybe one out of every 5 times. It's sad, not just because the place I love doesn't exist anymore, but that this place has so much wasted potential. Unless something major changes, shop somewhere else. I watched three elderly drivers nearly collide with each other because the rear exit from the parking lot is never open. So cars have to get really close to each other to maneuver out of the lot. In fact, there is a wall in the parking lot that is torn apart simply because the cars can't maneuver in the tight lot and this piece of wall is visibly destroyed from cars bumping into it ... imagine what it is doing to their cars .... and again, they don't give you the use of the back exit which would alleviate all this. I sent an e mail to Salvation Arm's headquarters, they never responded. Maybe they need a few legal suits against them to get the ideal ... OPEN the back exit to the lot so drivers don't have to have a difficult time exiting. read more

Whomever the manager was that they are talking about in the older posts, she is gone. The manager here is wonderful. Some of the furniture pieces are wildly over-priced and it's true they could use some help in that area, but remember the money goes to charity. I think recently they've seen a surge in antique stores shopping around to see what's there, and that's the reason the prices have gone up. I'm hoping this doesn't last because real people from the neighborhood also shop here. I still find bargains here though. You have to look around at least once a week. Can I give negative stars? This place keeps getting worse and worse. They've decided to up their prices to the point that you might as well buy things new. Seriously. Red price tags on most everything, with some ridiculously high prices, and which are never half off. Those tags now cover the store, so if the item has previous store tags on it, or is just something that the manager likes, be prepared to see top dollar price tags. Some items cost even more than they did when they were new! You might still find something stained or torn for a decent price, so I mean... as long as you don't mind wearing food stains or ripped fabrics... Their "half off" Wednesdays are a joke. Only some things are half off (whatever they decide that week,) and rarely worth buying. The vast majority of the items are garbage that people didn't want to throw away and donated instead. However, a lot of the stuff I've seen people donate is much nicer than anything that gets put out for sale. Probably stolen, and I'm sure the staff gets their first choice of everything for whatever price they want. Plenty of stuff hidden behind the counter that you'll never get to see. Even with all that said, the biggest problem is the manager. The act of re-pricing items is the reason I am boycotting this store. The rest of the staff is also unfriendly, but she takes the cake. This manager comes up with prices on the spot, whatever she thinks you can afford. Sometimes 5 times the marked price! One day I was shopping with my wife, and I asked the manager how long an item was in the store. She then casually told me "oh by the way, it's $100." I flipped it over to reveal the ticket said $40. She then shrugged and walked away. I mean $100? $40? What's the difference anyway right? Of course it wasn't half off either, even on their "half off Wednesday." They have forgotten the reason the Salvation Army exists. These items are USED, and as another reviewer pointed out, it's not an antique store. This is not the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and soon no one in the neighborhood will be able to afford what they sell. Why is it that this place is the only used clothing store in the area? If another opened, and had half way decent merchandise and even somewhat nice staff, they'd make a killing! If there was any justice in this world, the manager would be fired, and this store would be run properly or run out of business. Probably won't happen, but I can dream. William and Catherine Booth (the founders of the Salvation Army) would be ashamed. If you choose to shop here, be prepared for many bad experiences. I'm not going to anymore though, and I advise my friends not to either. Choose another location. read more

My best friend and I have been coming to this Salvation Army location for probably a year to two years. We come pretty often and we tend to always leave satisfied with a bag full of goodies. I can't really say much for the first floor that's full of furniture as I don't really check that floor out. The floor under is where all the clothing, bags, and shoes are (where my friend and I head straight to). They also have two changing room in the corner near the men's clothing section. They have a pretty good variety for women's clothing. The clothing is also organized as they are placed in their respective sizes. So far I haven't had any bad experiences at the shop with any of the employees. They are all pretty chill, just mind their own business, and do their work. The workers I've seen downstairs in the clothing section seem very friendly and they are helpful when you need assistance or have any questions. I always look forward to my little shopping trip here with my friend knowing I'm most likely going to find something I like. I'm actually going to this location again tomorrow with my friend. I would definitely recommend this location to anyone that's looking for some good casual clothing. read more

I just stopped by this Salvation Army store to drop off 5 large and heavy contractor bags of clothes, shoes and household items. The store attendent was extremely rude and disrespectful. I asked if there was someone who can help me bring the bags inside the store and she responded and said "No..no one here can help"...all while rolling her eyes at me. So I had to literally drag all 5 bags out of my car and into the store myself with no assistance. She didn't even offer to hold the door open for me while I lugged each bag one by one inside the store. I must say that I am extremly disappointed in the customer service at this location.
