It's been years since I have been in Sample House, walking into this store, it's exactly as I remember - but better! Beautifully decorated and arranged in such a pleasing way. You just never know. The last thing I expected to find here was my favorite mosquito repellent! That's right....but it fits right in with the spirit of the place. Candles,cards,windchimes,stuffed animals,crafts..they started with a single shop in an old house near downtown Dallas. They've grown and prospered over the years because of the broad appeal. Don't waste your money on overpriced and TOXIC candles here. I stopped in yesterday as I've lived in the neighborhood for 4+ years and had yet to visit this store. The two ladies behind the counter couldn't be bothered to pause their conversation to greet me. Was browsing for a few mins before another woman approached me and asked if I needed help. I told her I was just taking a look around. Her response? "Ok, we're closing at 6." I turned around and walked out. Do yourself a favor and make a trip downtown to the farmers market shops if you're looking for unique gift ideas. Authentic, local, and less expensive goods of the same nature with friendly folks to boot. Disappointing at best. I would've loved to support a local business like this in Casa Linda. read more

I have been a regular, devoted, and enthusiastic customer of this store since 2018. Today was my last day to shop here, my decision. Let me preface this by saying that I worked in retail and high end retail for app 10 years total. Even working a minimum wage retail job in college, I would have been FIRED, no warning, no job retraining, nothing, just fired on the spot, get your stuff and leave now fired if I had dared to treat any customer the way I was treated today, making a total purchase of approximately $525 in about an hour ( I am a very fast and efficient shopper). The head person (not manager because this woman said her manager instructed her to treat customers like this) treated me like I was a criminal and a shop lifter, like I was going to steal their shit to trade for meth. I finally felt so insulted that I said to this old skinny blonde Nazi, "I didn't realize I was in a police station." Very clearly; she heard me the first time and another employee overheard. This Aryan stork said that she had never seen me in this store before, when I have been in that very same store 5 to 6 times this very year, including today's visit where I dropped a wad of $525! There is a super nice lady named Connie who works here; I remember Connie from way back and she remembered me. What is even more baffling: all these small brick and mortar stores are not only competing against Amazon BUT they are also now competing against the many small boutique online stores through Shop. And prices of many items in Sample house are not competitive with Amazon pricing and not even competitive with small online boutique pricing on Shop. Also re some of their cute "nostalgia" cottage core items: just go on Ebay and get the real thing for a steal. The store was not busy when I was there at about 11:45; other customers were purchasing 2 or 3 items or just looking; I was clearly their jackpot customer of the day. When I worked in high end retail and we saw a customer was going all out, we made a little celebration out of it with all the employees pitching in to help the customer and to help each other with tasks. This blonde Nazi needs to get into another line of work altogether! Customer service in retail is NOT her bag and I suspect NOTHING in customer service is her bag. Also, I was wearing very expensive new workout/yoga matching jacket and pants from a very high end retailer: meth addicts trying to shoplift stuff don't dress like this because they can't afford it and it would call too much attention to them. I am not adding this detail to be a snob (I bought the outfit on clearance) but to demonstrate how terribly this woman is misreading cues: she was definitely annoyed that I kept going to the back of the store and boy did she keep her eye on me!!! She practically accused me of trying to steal stuff by hiding it in an inexpensive gift bag, which I planned to purchase, when I was just trying to keep some smaller items organized!!! Talk about the Nazi Institute of Retail Management! I explained to the entire staff that I like buying all my gifts at one time to cover multiple holidays and birthdays: I already have most of my Christmas shopping done at end of April! Also, I explained I was buying gifts for an aunt going through a tough time in physical rehab, for my cousin who has an ongoing physical illness and for my 94 year old mother. The ideal customer base for this sort of store, right? Not according to the Nazi. Never coming back: can get same or similar stuff on Amazon, through stores on Shop and on Ebay. read more

We went in and a very nice employee said we can put some items at the front till 3 to get 20% off (they do a sale from 3-6) and I thought that was really nice of her to mention that to us. When we got to the front to ask if they can keep the dresses till then the two old women up front looked at us like we committed a crime. You know that scene in Pretty Woman where those sales ladies were talking down to Julia Roberts? That's literally how we felt lol. Then they proceeded to help someone else. Honestly, the price tag wasn't a big deal but when the employee suggested we leave them we totally took her up on it. We asked again and they scoffed and said they don't have room (we only had two dresses) and told us to "just keep it in your hand" and their counter space was fairly free and it was 15 minutes till 3 and we had wanted to go next store real quick before then. We wouldn't have minded waiting the 15 minutes but their rudeness was a turn off and wholly unnecessary. It's unfortunate as the other employee was super sweet and kind. We've shopped here once before, and it was fine, but this left such a bad impression we won't come back. read more

HA! Stephen K. hit the nail on the head with his description. Imagine a store with every unnecessary decoration, embroiderer toilet cover or mug with the clever "over 50" cartoon on it, then you're in the right spot. Still not sure? Just look behind the counter at the 2-3 ladies yapping it up about the kids, the car, the husband or last night's episode of "Real Housewives of ...where ever". All kidding aside, there are some pretty interesting gifts in this place a classic "go to" for birthday gifts for mom, grandma or any other special woman in your life. The staff is friendly but again, are often so wrapped up in their own conversations, it can be hard to distract one of them long enough to answer a questions. Maybe start with "You know, I saw this on Oprah (Dr. Oz, Dr. Phil) today...." Cash, credit cards and maybe hormone replacements all taken here. Wow, what a disappointment. I've shopped at other Sample House locations for several years and was so excited after recently moving into the area and noticing this specific location. I popped in one rainy afternoon and there was nobody else in the store but I was looking forward to shopping since the Thanksgiving AND Christmas items were already out. I was in the store a good 15 minutes browsing without the two workers doing so much as acknowledging me, let alone asking if I needed help, wanted to leave my items at the counter or if I had any questions. After so much time went on, I was very annoyed but figured they were hard at work and would help me once I got to the counter, right? Wrong. I stood at the counter for several minutes while the two workers stood near the front display window talking about their cars and one of their kids recently getting their license, etc. etc. I'm so glad they have so much time to catch up and gab while their working...clearly, working too hard to bother actually helping customers. While they were talking one of the ladies locked eyes with me and still didn't rush over as I expected. I left everything that I had intended on purchasing at the counter and walked out without so much as a goodbye or thanks for coming in! Totally clueless ladies who probably got a job for "fun" with no intention of actually WORKING. I feel sorry for the owner of this Sample House. Because of their clueless staff, they lost easily $100+ worth of sales. read more

I was excited to get a Mother's Day gift from this place, I was not greeted like the non people of color were at the same time in the store. I said hello to the workers and they ignored me, they were not occupied with anything just simply pretended we were not there. The workers didn't even look or pay attention to us. I'm an avid fan of Tyler Candle Co., and this is one of the retailers in Dallas that carries a very wide and vast selection. I was happy to find everything from candle melts, air fresheners and gift sets from this line in stock. Perfect for the gift I needed! I even discovered a new line, Orleans, and bought a couple of items from them. The store itself is nice, and it has a lot to offer as far as gift ideas. Lots of candles, knick knacks, etc. Price points vary, and you have so many candle brands and lines, you can't not find something you'll like. So, if I could give it 3 1/2 stars, I would. Tim H. may be onto something regarding his experience with customer service. As a new customer to the shop, I was hoping for a friendly greeting or a have you been here before, can I help you find something? The Sample House has a vast array of items and it can be a bit overwhelming where to start, in a good way because hey, choices! However,there was a rather chatty customer talking to both sales reps, so I didn't get a hello or acknowledged as I walked in. Okay cool, maybe someone will come find me and say hello. Nope, I had to reach out for assistance, which I was given, so I do appreciate that. I can understand if the sales reps aren't trying to be pushy, but my opinion is that customer service in a home goods/gift store should be more on the homey side, especially when you're a new customer. With so much to see, it would have been nice to be given some direction by a friendly employee. I might've bought more items! read more

This Sample House has been around for years. My ex worked here at one time, and some of the same people are still there. Very friendly...homey type of place. The candles are great...plenty of different choices. They make buying gifts for mother's day types of holidays pretty easy. Fairly big selection of cards, wind chimes, knick knacks. Some kid's books and toys, cookbooks, miscellany. I bought a nice picture frame one time. Got a wicker basket type thing just now as I was picking up a few greeting cards that I needed. There's a Starbuck's next door in one direction and the Maddox Shop in the other in case you're in the mood for a custom-fitted super-bra. I have shopped at other Sample House stores and really enjoyed doing so. I popped in the Casa Linda store for a quick gift for a friend and was sadly disappointed in the customer service. This store is very cute with many gift options (only reason I am giving it 2 stars) but will be purchasing my gifts elsewhere. read more
