This is such a cool music venue and an Austin staple. We have never heard a bad show here. And the tickets are all reasonably priced. Even though they have lots of tables and seating, every show we have been to has been packed with many people standing. Get there early if you want to secure a seat! The bar staff is so nice and attentive. You can find them jamming with the music and just having a great time. It's the kind of vibe you want in a live music venue. There is a food truck outside and you can order from your table. They will even bring the food to you! Saxon Pub is definitely our go-to place for casual, live music. Pro Tip: For the shows we have attended, they have a tip jar they pass around for the bands. Bring cash because we have not seen a way to digitally pay. However, the day we were here we discovered there was a potluck where patrons bring all the food given the establishment lacks food service. I also had to note that happy hour is not posted but is from 4-6pm. Drafts are 6 bucks and then jump 50% to $9 after 6pm. Parking is somewhat limited so unless you're arriving early when they open at 4pm it may be appropriate to take an uber. read more

Perfect mix of dive-y bar, but with true charm. The real draw here is the music, and on a Thursday night, with the Patrice Pike Band, it certainly delivered. You can order food from the truck right outside with a QR code on your table. The food was surprisingly good - with hot dogs with fresh tomatoes, onions and jalapenos. We also enjoyed the frito pie, which was by no means healthy, but had fresh and quality ingredients (of course, not including the fritos :)). The server at Saxon Pub deserves a medal. One woman serves every table - and does a phenomenal job of getting people round after round. The standout is the music. The Patrice Pike band was impressive - music was really enjoyable and they worked to engage the crowd throughout. Come early to get your table! read more

My wife and I went to Saxon Pub for the first time and we definitely enjoyed our experience. We went to see Micah Edwards perform. Although we had not really listened to his music before, my wife saw some great TikTok videos of him performing and it drew us in. First, I'm a huge fan of small, intimate music venues. It's one of those places where there are no bad spots to watch a concert performance. I would recommend getting to the venue early though. There are limited seats so the earlier you arrive, the better your chances are of obtaining a seat. We weren't able to secure a seat, but we still had a great time and enjoyed the view. Secondly, the artist was phenomenal. Micah Edwards exceeded our expectations. We loved his storytelling and he provided details on when and why he wrote each song before performing each track. I felt like he let us into his life as he spoke about his wife, kids, and upbringing. He has an amazing voice and his band was fantastic. I always enjoying listening to live music. Third, my wife and I are taking some time off from drinking alcohol to live healthier lives. I was pleasantly surprised that Saxon Pub had some great non-alcoholic drink options available. I thought I was just going to have to drink soda or water during the show. But there were some great non-alcoholic options from breweries. Lastly, the staff were extremely friendly and responsive. They served you with a smile and danced as the artist played music. Just a great experience overall! After attending this concert, we will definitely return to Saxon Pub to see other shows and we are now fans of Micah Edwards so we plan to listen to more of his music as well. read more

Great music and drinks at this longstanding venue on South Lamar. I recommend a visit!

After a late dinner we were lulled into Saxon Pub by the sound a live music! We fell in love with this place. Great drinks and service from the sweet bartender including old fashioned, ginger beer, and an amazing cold cup for water. Prices are fair and the bartender was so attentive! I love when any place has purse hooks, because all purse holders know how much space hooks save, how much safer they are and in general the thought that went into adding them is heart warming. The band was amazing! I can't recall their name but they were performing Christmas music on the news the best day! I love the rustic decor, from the fair lights to the armored suits and the elephant bar sconces. There was a 5$ cover fee but it was worth it! What can I add to the many glowing reviews already in place for the legendary Saxon Pub, whose motto is "No Bad Days"? If you came to Austin to partake in what makes us the "Live Music Capital of the World," you probably need to see at least one show here. And if you're a local like me who loves music with a bit of twang, some country/blues/rock, more than one guitar, and an enthusiastic audience, you probably already know why Saxon is beloved by so many in this town. Heck, they even have their own documentary on Prime - that's something! The Saxon is a dark, cozy, intimate listening room, with space for only about 150 seats, ages 21+ only, and the door fee's usually around $10 depending on who is playing. Shows tend to be around 90 minutes with a mid-point break, and evenings may include up to 3 or 4 different acts, with the house cleared after each act. Snag a table near the stage, a stool at the bar, or one of those tall cocktail tables over by the wall. When the music starts, hush up! A cocktail waitress will visit periodically to see if you need anything. Otherwise, share a beer (they have 14 on tap, plus a full bar), talk up a storm, watch the big game on the TVs, or attend a private special event. They host everything from weddings to fundraisers to milestone parties to memorial celebrations of life. When you get up to use the restrooms in the back, be sure to take a look at all the years of autographed photos and other memorabilia collected since Saxon opened in 1990. This was my first time visiting Austin, TX and the Saxon Pub was highly recommended as the place to see "musician's musicians" type of musical groups. I was SO happy that they don't allow you to talk through the performance - such a WONDERFUL place to go to enjoy a concert and the band did not disappoint, which is saying a LOT for me. The band was both soulful and skilled. And most notably, this is a place where the audience really cares about music and has discerning taste. Everyone was there to listen! The Saxon Pub did a great job of holding up Austin's reputation as a town with real musicians. A surprise bonus was not only the kindness of the staff but evidently the honesty of the crowd there too: we accidentally left a cell phone behind at the pub when we left and...guess what? Our first time here. I was excited about coming here, one, I really wanted to see the band that was playing, two, I've heard about the Saxon Pub. All good things. Parking is very limited, we got lucky and got a spot. I don't know if there are any places to park. The place is pretty small, we had a reserved table at the front, which was cool. Our ticket purchase was just for this one band, if we had to stick around for the other bands, you had to purchase another ticket. Which to me is a bummer. Service is great, the staff are super friendly and polite. They move quickly also. They have a food truck outside, but we ate somewhere else. I really enjoyed the sound here. I thought I loved everything about this fabulous dive. However they have predatory tipping practices so I will not be returning. They automatically added 35% gratuity to my tab last weekend. Great venue! It's small and there is a mad dash to grab a chair at a table....kinda stressful but we made it work. Drinks are good...just wear your track shoes....our table actually got roughly taken over by 2 belligerent women. We were sitting at the table and this woman gets in front of our table and just took the chairs...no excuse me or are these chairs taken. If you can get past the table dash a wonderful waitress will take all your drink orders so you don't have to worry about somebody taking over your seats. Great venue really enjoyed listening to great local musicians. You do have to buy a ticket for the show you want ahead of time. If you get there early they will kindly check you in and ask you to sit at the patio or down 3 stairs in a waiting room area until your show is up. Was there for the first time Saturday evening and got to hear Johnny Nicholas. Amazing Blues Voice. The music in Austin is second to none. Doesn't much matter where you go and it's all good. We saw the most amazing thing at Saxon. The place was packed with 70 plus year old people, and they were having the time of their life at the show before ours. When they left, we asked who they were, and our server, Libby, laughed heartily and said, "South Austin Hippies, been comin' here every Friday for 30 years." And I do mean having time of their lives." Saxon is highly recommended. We WILL go back. If you drink, which we hardly ever do, drinks are priced very reasonably----12-14 dollars with reasonable priced beer as well! read more

The beer selection is solid, bartenders know how to make about any drink well - especially their coconut margarita! The sound quality is great no matter the type of artist.
